For the fag having trouble with VC when playing as empire.
Right so I usually fight the undead around the early mid game. I'll take a couple of mortars and a cannon. Halbrediers, swordsmen, crossbows and some knights preferably reiksguard. Also a couple units of flagellants.

Chances are you'll be doing this bit with Franz or your LL so even better. Especially if it's Franz on his flying rapebird.

First things first. Shoot the fuck out of them. Target whatever you don't want to fight and shoot it until it dies.

Try to anticipate which of their units is going where. Get rid of dogs and bats first at all costs. Then I try to weaken their lord with crossbow fire before the armies meet.

Let them charge you (you have the skill that negates charge bonuses right?) Try to pair up good matches.

Use Franz + reiksguard to charge one unit on one flank in the arse and cycle until it dies. Meanwhile as their dogs and bats are all dead (right?) Move your ranged round behind them and start shooting. Remember you can target large models in melee and not worry about FF so much.

If their lord isn't legendary then use Franz to snipe him. If it's a skilled up Vlad, shoot him first.

The crumbling mechanic is useful but think of it like wavering on a normal unit. If you see something is crumbling do exactly what you would do to break a unit (I.e. cavalry charge it).

If you have a wizard with the lore of light (why don't you?) Use it. Laugh.

Like I said, my army comps suck - exclusively swordsmen, spearmen, a few crossbows and free militia company.

Granted, they're all buffed up with Honest Steel and the charge negation bonus, etc, but it seems I fucked up by not upgrading.

I have no idea how you could field "a couple of mortars and a canon", along with cavalry in the early mid game. I'm turn 60ish and I barely finally got a gunsmith going.

Guess I focused too much on economy / expansion?

Also, how to use Franz to snipe enemy LL's? I see lots of people talk about this, but Franz seems to suck to be honest. For example I put him on Manfred during the battle and he was clearly losing the fight. I've even had him fall in battle against Beastmen before, he seems pretty squishy and weak to be honest.

No wizard of light either. I suck.

to add on to this, I do something similar to this anon - shooting shit like crypt horrors/varghulfs/vargheists w/ xbows to kill them quickly and using cannons to damage whatever cav they have. A good way to assist your infantry vs large amounts of zombies/skeletons is to have a mortar far enough behind you line so that the minimum range is just in front of your troops - this will allow you to target large enemy blobs with alt + right click, and since you are firing at such short range the mortars will be pinpoint accurate (so accurate that if you don't change their target they will be hitting the empty "craters" in enemy formations caused by previous volleys). Light wizard is a must have for netting stray fliers/doggos and the leadership debuff

Yes I took Marienburg recently, I'm making 5k a turn now so I have finally gotten around to putting up buildings like gunsmith, reiksfort, etc. Empire buildings are staggeringly expensive.

Here is my Empire, Franz for some reason is leveling really slowly through battles - he is currently only lvl 10 or 11. I have him on the pegasus currently, he has a few points in blue, maxed out the armor in yellow, and am currently working on red stuff.

Taking Marienburg should be the first thing you do after conquering Reikland. If you have a Castellan in Altdorf and deploy a wizard with the first blue upgrade you can save tremendous amounts of money on construction. I have no idea how you're at turn 60 with a level 10 Franz, you must be barely fighting battles.

I'd beg to differ but make sure when he's fighting an enemy general that you watch him and make sure he's thumping the enemy general. He will (if left to his own devices) Try to kill everyone near him, spreading his damage out. Keep clicking attack on that bloodsucker. If it seems he's losing bad don't be shy to run him away. Sometimes tying Vlad up with a unit of flagellants and killing everything else is the best thing.

You have regiments of renown I assume because you've got FC. Get that cannon and that rocket launcher. I usually also manage to pinch some mortars by the time I've gotten over to the undead but don't worry if you don't. Building them I try to do from Nuln and spec reikland for cavalry. If you're starting with Franz then you must by now already have one incredibly experienced unit of reiksguard. I try to build a reiksfort in helmgart as well as a wall in case the French get any funny ideas. Anyway just use Zintlers if you're having trouble.

Key points vs VC
1. Kill the fast shit
2. Tie up and if possible kill their lord fast and anything that buffs shit like corpse carts.
3. With your hammer stuff try to concentrate on one unit at a time until it crumbles and dies then keep folding your line around them.

If you ever find a potion of healing make sure Franz gets it. It makes him a bit silly.

You should get a free wizard as well from quests and stuff no?

Also make sure if you've found any cool swords and what have you that they are equipped.

Be aware also that characters (priests etc) have a flat -2 chaos/undead corruption thing. You'll probably need two armies one in east and west sylvanniafor a good while until they stop rebelling every few turns. I'd recommend building sigmar temples in those provinces ASAP.

Alright so if you start a new game you should have conquered the Reikland by turn 5 and have a full or almost full army.

Then see if the Marienburg army is away or moves away in like 2 turns. If they don't, start over.
If their army turns around and attacks you after you've sieged their empty city then you'll have a decent fight but you should win this. Use your reiksguard or whatever cavalry you have and kill their mortar. Use your 4 or so crossbowmen to focus fire their Free Company Militia and use your own Free Company Militia (have 2) on the edges of your infantry line to murder thier pistoleirs.

During all of this you should be upgrading the cities as soon as you can with your population surplus. Build weaving houses or whatever the first level money building is called.
Make sure to build guardhouses in every, EVERY town, even your cities, just because you have walls already doesn't mean it has a good garrison. It's pretty bad, actually.

Sometimes the beastmen siege a city when they come. So the safe route is to have Franz turn around after taking Marienburg and not worrying about the other province yet. Kill beasties, do the quest, then take the last settlement. Then it's up to you. You can turtle and confederate, or war and confederate

Since I hit the Imperium goal for the campaign, I'm ending it here - seeing as how this is a fitting battle and I'm getting tired of micro-ing horse archers every battle.

The AI has absolutely no idea how to deal with horse archers in age of charlemagne

Tribesmen are fun to use, one of my favorite units in attila since they are hybrid infantry that can actually do well in both of their roles, unlike hybrid skirmishers in the base game which can only survive in melee, not thrive. I didn't use the noble archers/horse masters since most of the enemy cav I was up against was light/very light cav that would have been able to catch them

Just did my first siege in Shogun 2; killed their general with my bow ashigaru before I even assaulted it. Did not realise your warriors actually scale the walls or that breaching the gates was equivalent to putting them on fire. I think I'll really enjoy this game.

Mannfred's only that expensive because he gets a dragon and he's the only lord in the game who can get two lores of magic at once, take that off and he's not that much more expensive. Still dies like a chump in melee to a lot of the dedicated melee lords.

How does armor value work? Is it just a straight up damage reduction or does armor grant vulnerabilities against certain types of attack? Is there a point where armor is no longer needed? My steam tanks sit at 185 armor and sat in the middle of a greenskin horde for some 10 minutes only to lose 10% of their total HP. I know there's a limit to the amount of AP greenskins, but hot damn these things feel beastly.

Armor is a set reduction to physical damage

Presumably it has diminishing returns, for sure there is no way to get 100% immunity to physical damage.

The other stat, melee defense, is the chance to completely block physical damage.

A problem I keep running into in the Bretonnian campaign is that, even when I have the proper buildings and enough money, sometimes I can't recruit units - or more correctly, I can't recruit units that at one point I was allowed to recruit. Usually it's flavors of Knights, but in a recent campaign I've lost archers.

What am I doing wrong? Am I just making some retarded mistake and not realizing it? It's not as if it's an across the board problem - if I lose the ability to recruit Knights Errant in one province, somehow I can upgrade a stable in another province and recruit a few from there. But sometimes it just seems random.

I haven't played with mods yet, though I've been looking at a regiments of renown addon. So far it's just the base game, and obviously some of the free DLCs.

I don't think it really happens how you say it does with mods, though - peasant archers are tied to farms, so they shouldn't be affected by upgrades. Knights Errant, as far as I've tried, work fine for a few units, and suddenly I can't recruit more. And at one point I built whatever building you needed for a trebuchet, but the unit never showed up as being recruitable. I'll probably just send a report.

9 out of 10 campaigns they will control half the map and maintain military superiority through the entire first half of the game

That's why you have to keep an eye on state of affairs in the badlands and see if they roll over the orcs early or late, you have to establish diplomacy with orcs and send them funds since early to curb the dwarf swarms coming down from the mountains.

I'm in a 200 turn empire campaign and i'm enjoying watching the orcs and dwarves tear eachother apart while I fund whoever is losing.

Skaven were just an infinite, numberless hoard of rats with a little 5% of technological weapons and monsters (ogre-rats, savage rats, etc)

the main reason the Skaven asswhooped the dwarves many times was their chemical globadiers, they filled the corridors of dwarven cities with chemical weapons and grenades and strangled them easily.

All in all I hope Skaven get implemented like the real ones and like how they should, numbers reliant. an infinite, chittering tide of cowardly rats using numbers to win. instead of a symmetric army to the rest of the current ones (OP as shit with apeshit rosters)

There's no big wonder to it, just learn the rock-paper-scissors of the unit types and try to get as many individual favorable situations in a battle as you can. The "hammer" (i.e. big monstrous units or cavalry) essentially exists to turn unfavorable situations around, either by speeding up the opponent's defeat in otherwise favorable fights, thus freeing up the "anvil" units to help out in less favorable ones, or by slamming into unfavorable fights repeatedly to change the flow.

You could think of artillery, archers and skirmish troops as a "hammer" of their own, just that it has less of a shock factor than a devastating cavalry charge in exchange for being ranged and creating a factor of attrition on the battlefield for the enemy instead.
It's about equally unpleasant to have the entirety of a hellblaster volley gun ammo reserve emptied into your squads as it is to have them charged by demigryphs several times.

tl;dr create favorable situation with and for your anvil, exploit enemy weaknesses with the hammer

God I hate the late game. As far as I'm concerned I won the campaign two days ago, spending the rest of time grinding down fucking vampires, vikings and elves - the only surviving factions. Why do orcs even have to take those shitty fucking dwarfholds on the border of Chaos Wastes to achieve victory?
I hope in the future CA reworks campaign victory conditions to be more like Brettonians and beastmen - you do things, eliminate needed factions, do the final quest battle and then you win. At least it ends the campaign on a high note instead of just requiring you to run around and capture fucking dwarfholds for two goddamn days while everyone around you declares war for no reason and razes your shit while completely ignoring you sieging down their fucking capital. I even gave money to the fucking elves, big piles of dosh to keep them from annoying me, but they still went at it.

I just want the legendary achievement with Wurrzag. It is rare that I get a good start with him and the campaign was very fun up until the Chaos died and I was left with Vampires, Tilea, Elves and Vikings sending waves of stacks at me, none of them wanting to make peace, even when they are down to last town. Tilea was eliminated yesterday, today I just killed the Vampires, Elves and Vikings are on the chopping block (as soon as I build up my army back again, Viking fuckers swooped in with 6 stacks right after I killed Vampires and took down 2 of my main stacks).
Another thing I hate is overabundance of attrition (that AI all but ignores).

Yes, kinda. Just take two gorebulls and spec both into different specs. As far as gors are concerned it's more about how much you value vanguard deployment. If you are relying on minotaurs then vanguard deployment becomes less meaningful, since those guys don't have it. Ambushes make vanguard deployment irrelevant too.

first army had 1 unit heavy cav, 1 unit african elephants, they pushed into me but I made the elephants run amok into their own lines, their left flank smashed into my right but I pushed through on the left and routed them then swung back to finish off the leftovers of the first army

2nd army came in from the east and luckily my men weren't engaged long enough to be tired, re-formed a long line with 2 in reserve
2nd carthaginian army had a unit of artillery and 8 skirmishers, all my pila were depleted and my skirmishers non-existant so I had to drive through their skirms with my general, kill the arty and return, then in a holding fashion I pushed up like a flight of stairs on the right to drive off the right side skirms, peeled off 2 units on the right and to the middle to push in

I may be wrong, but I much prefer people who play Total War to post campaigns and write stories around those campaigns. There was a dude who did that here around Portugal, another around the Iberians, one with Celts and so on. It's much better than just watching someone go through the motions in a stream and it doesn't allow you to build a narrative.

Watching a campaign is pretty dull. Unless you're an amazing storyteller and can do that shit on the fly nonstop in a stream, it doesnt make for good viewing.
If you wanted to really put the effort in and record highlights and build a narrative that'd be something worth making, but it'd take a lot of work and who knows how many would watch.
I think the video space for total war is pretty full up, It's either lore guys, PVP guys or autists who think their voice should be heard for some reason (legendoftotalwar).

Milkandcookies is my favourite to watch, provides a bit of lore, tries to show off battle scenes. Sometimes it doesn't quite work but his hearts in the right place.

What worked extremely well for me was having Vladdy boy with a stack of grave guard, skellies and zombies + corpse carts, these would vanguard deploy and get up in their face fast. Vlad + his Wight King friend - Fred, were both specced for combat and Vlad also for raising zombies.

Izzy would reinforce with Vhargheists, knights and dogs - later Vhargulfs and dragons. Oh and vamps, lots of vamps.

I was essentially using Vlad as an anvil and Izzy's entire army as a hammer.

It also meant I had huge raise dead piles to draw on.

This set up would eat anything thrown at me and wasn't bad on upkeep either.

Exhausted units fight mess efficiently than fresh ones.

You can raise a half stack of zombies and skellies anywhere and just send them as the first wave.

Losing them all and quickly is fine as the enemy uses vigor and ammo to do it.

In fact you want to lose a ton of fodder because the turn after the battle you'll have access to much better Raise Dead options.

Personally I don't like twitch as a platform for let's plays that much. Chat interaction and all that is fun, but watching gigantic uncut twitch VODs full of chat interaction that I can't relate to was never my cup of tea. I think twitch is better for multiplayer battles than for single player stuff. With youtube you control exactly when you start and finish recording, you can edit, you aren't getting side tracked by the chat so you can properly focus on the game and provide commentary.
But maybe I'm wrong, it could be fun watching a stream of a local memer taking on a campaign. What mods/difficulty are you planning to use?

Pretty much this, yes.

In some places you can replace the tent with a recruitment (squig)or support building to get better units (iron and wood for better infantry, pastures and furs for better cav)

Black Crag is good for infantry, Barak Varr and Eight Peaks are good for Cav.

I'm finishing up a legendary Wurrzag campaign right now.
I don't know if that is only Wurrzag's bonus or a savage orc trait in general, but savage orc units replenish ridiculously fast in their own territory. So I'd advice using savage orc units as a majority, even in non-wurrzag armies, this way it will be a lot easier for you to restore your forces comapared to others and carry on with attacks. The only non-savage orc units I use are gobbo archers, a chariot, boar biguns (they have proper anti-large), doom diver and an arachnorok. Most of my armies look like this, even though there is some small variation - I use a core of Black Orcs for Grimgor and Skarsnik has a full gobbo force.
Also yeah, pile of shinies/walls/boss camp is what you build in the majority of your towns. In bigger provinces you can replace one of the boss camps with a savage orc recruitment thingy, since it only goes to level 3 it's kinda meaningless to build in the capitals.

As of right now, every other remaining faction is at war with the Greenskin menace. The shrewd profiteers of Tilea, the cultured dandies of Estalia, the brave knights of Bretonnia, the inventive soldiers of The Empire, and the remaining armies of the once mighty Dwarf empire, and Durthu McLeafensraum
Azhag and his Waagh came for me, but luckily they decided to pincer me on the campaign map, which meant on the battle map they deployed on opposite ends. I smashed his Waagh first and ran to meet him as he jogged on over. The big fat red clump is all night goblins, victims of Tree Kin and a few well timed spells.

When you play the full game sometime in the far future, all endgame events will happen at the same time and ignore all surviving AIs to focus on you because fuck you.

To the north, Morghur and Khazrak popped out of the fog and attacked my outpost on Talabheim (aka Treelabheim), both with fairly pitiful armies of Gors and Ungors, nothing more. They would have overwhelmed me with the numbers easily, but luckily Grombrindal was there within reinforcement range, and he gladly helped me smash the Beastmen army. I think we're even now, Orion helped him take a valuable settlement, and he saved Treelabheim. Here's Aldin the Scarred, one of Grombrindal's 3 heroes, on a walk.

Last thread someone asked about the most treacherous factions in each tw games. I only played Rome 1&2, medieval 2 and Warhammer (also got fots but never was interested in it enough to play). Rome 1 was so long ago I barely remember anything about it. In Rome 2 and warhammer, the AI manage to be consistent and honor every pacts I made with them so I can't really call any of them treachery. Now back to Medieval 2, as Milan I couldn't put up with the bullshits the Holy Roman Empire pulled on me: They constantly sent spy to cause unrest in my settlements (while I wasn't at war or hadn't done anything to them); they seiged trading assets that I had for at least 40 turns; they were responsible for the assassination of one of my Kings who had several good traits and was chivalrous as fuck; they always ask for money in every trade pacts and yet never one honor the deal for more than 10 turns; they bribed one of my general to their side; they started war on Poland, whose princess I married because she had like maxed out charm in exchange for alliance between 2 me and Poland, and as the result I got dragged into the war I always avoided, and they actually prepared for that war because just 1 turn later they already knock the door of my capital. Those fucking spineless, backstabbing, shit flinging, higher caliber of maggots, fucking imbeciles. my blood actually boils as I remember everything and type this down.

Too bad they remove infantry animations. Rarely see lords killing monsters animations too, and from what ive seen, lords killing each other (or heroes) only result of either they get decapitated (from a non-descript attack or charges) or they just fall to the ground.

Picked up Attila again recently and gave Burgundy a try on legendary. Been a pretty hectic campaign so far, having fought off Rugians, Danes, Geats and Varinians for my little slice of Europe.

Pic is a 14~k man battle early on when i declared war on the Rugians, which ended up becoming a total clusterfuck. Lost the melee pretty badly but ended up routing them with missile fire. As it stands now i'm either going to expand into Frisia and check the Langobards before they become too strong, or go south towards the splintered and weaker tribes and build up there.

Also the franks are in scandinavia for some reason.

Matched combat animation was bad from a gameplay perspective though. Nothing more annoying than watching peasants line up to go 1v1 with the last unbreakable samurai in the castle until one managed to beat him, not to mention the unit-stickiness it caused.

Fugg, these guys are fun, that was the most adrenaline filled early game I've had in a while. Unlike Skarsnik's campaign, where you are just bashing your head against dwarven walls here you get some hard hitting units and it's up to you to utilise them well. I've even dipped into bankruptcy once, but in the end it all worked out, on Legendary too.
It's too bad that I had to choose between keeping Manny alive for possible confederation and fully capturing Sylvania. I believe I chose correctly. Vlad and Isabella only need each other.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but I'm using SFO mod and that mod seems to change my gameplay for the better. Vladdy starts with a blood knight, but I started as Isabella and hired 3 Vargheists on the first turn. This put my finances in deep red, but allowed me to smash through anything Templehof tried to throw at me. Then I waited until Manny declared war on Ostermark, sniped Drakenhof from him while violating our NAP and finished him off and smashed through 3 of his stacks with my glorious Vargheists. I also got very lucky at one point - as soon as I sniped Drakenhof he came down with 2 stacks and started sieging it with Isabella still inside of it and Vlad standing near it with a skeleton force. I sent Vlad to the north and Manny took the bait, sending one of his stacks off to kill Vlad, thus allowing Isabella to break siege and finish that war off. That's almost romantic - Vlad sacrificing himself so his waifu could win.

My first time going through campaign with SFO, so I won't know if its unbalanced or anything, and I do not play multiplayer.

It might be overpowered, but I think this can be balanced. Just because its strong, I do not feel like it becomes a move that will win you the game if you have this unit. The upkeep is expensive, and unit like terrorgheist will still lose when ganged against anti monster units in a prolonged fight. I think it is fair.

I just think it gives weight to what the units are supposed to be instead of just being cannon fodder like skeleton and zombies are supposed to be.

at this point most of your Knight units should be at lest silver rank of of veterancy, meaning that they won't route and hit harder than the truck did in Niece.

Chaos will come from only one direction and they won't break like Orc's and recover so they can attack you from behind and get the bonus for rear attacking a unit.

A lack of shielded infantry will hurt you in the early game when facing AI missile units, late game you will get shitstomped by some of the stronger AI armies. You really do need a certain amount of heavy infantry when playing as the empire to hold the line at the very least.

Tried to hold em at the first wall, with all of my archers crowded onto two sections of wall. They sent one ram up, and it AMAZINGLY managed to get through. The idea was to hold em at the wall and just burn all their shit down, but SOMEHOW that didn't work, and as soon as they got to the wall I left some sacrificial mercs and BOOKED it to the citadel, threw up my archers on the walls, and waited.

They took their ladders toward one flank and brought up the other 3(!) rams, and got in again. Big ol scrum in the courtyard, my boys getting battered on the fucking walls, and one after another their generals hit the deck, before finally having to send in my general and my heavy cav to break it up and run em out of town. In the scrum I literally just focused on the weak/wavering units until I had a chainrout going. The timer you see there is because I spent literally the entire rest of the hour I had set running down the remainders.

The only real thing is that Estalia and Tilea are smaller ingame than they are usually depicted (Bretonnia is a bit smaller as well but it's not as pronounced), since they're not major factions and so there's no point in making them big landmasses aside from padding

No, because there was no "canon" Old World map for them to work on. It has been depicted inconsistently for literal decades. The TWW iteration is the most current and, thus, as the sole remaining piece of WHFB content, is canon.

I fucking hate chariots, not only did they buff them too much, they also screwed up the AI army composition even more for nosrcans, because now they only ever use chariots, at least in the past they also used doggos and marauder cav

Not just expand the map (Though that's nice too) I mean that they need more detail. Make Tilea/Estalia more than three settlements a piece, make the Empire actually THE EMPIRE, make Kislev an actual speed bump for Chaos rather than a slight detour.

I don't have a lot of problems with it, though a larger scale (especially for Ather Loren somehow) would have been nice.

Bretonnia should have been larger though, half of the dukedoms being portrayed as villages is awful.

Alright, here's a state of the world. We have 65 provinces, but Pau is about to revolt away in the very south there. We are so close to finishing this campaign, I just need to make sure my other French provinces don't revolt and make it a game of whack-a-rebel.

HRE destroyed Flanders a while ago, and France managed to get Burgundy to be their vassal, so I only have Castile left in my struggle here.

Alright this is what worked for me. It's subjective. I found it fun as fuck.

You have two hordes. Morghur and Dave.
Each now has a focus. Notice that Morghur gets huge upkeep reductions to spawn? Well knock down the ungor building and give everything in his army to Dave that isn't dogs harpies or spawn.

Daves army you spec for front line troops such as gors. Get the gor building. Upgrade it and your horde building.


Your aim is to have Daves army get better beast men and only beast men.

Morghur you fill his army with poison dogs and harpies then spawn. Lots of spawn.

Get every and I mean every blue skill or building that gives growth or reduces upkeep ASAP.

Whatever battle resolve gets you Khazrak, start doing that.

Keep going until you have Khazrak. There should be loads of spare growth in what was Daves horde to get the minotaur building. Swap Lords dave for Khazrak (go into the equipment screen it's there). Fill Dave's old army - now Khazraks with minotaurs. Morghurs is full of spawn and other beasties. Dave (in his new horde and he has all the growth skills) can start on getting the beast man building up again.

Never split your hordes up. Always work together. Then when you have a 4th horde work in pairs. My 4th horde is usually cygors and centaurs.
Ambush ambush ambush.
Shit on everything.

If you aren't using it Steel Faith Overhaul makes hordes a lot more fun. Also I don't think in the base game you get manticores as beast men? You do in SFO.
Always have as many gorebulls as you can.
Remember you'll be playing guerilla for at least 40 odd turns.
Growth is everything.
Upkeep reduction is everything.
It's not rape if it's an elf.

I'm playing a campaign with them. I got a minor victory, primarily through cheesing night attacks. I like the thought of upending history to such a great degree but I feel a little underwhelmed by their roster. Am I just playing them wrong?

no - the problem with the picts/caledonians is that they specialize in areas of attila that are not key factors of battles. Night battles are a fantastic faction trait, but melee infantry is not a big factor in battles in attila outside of anviling, and the pict's units are all hammers
