Regarding Kof it is too soon to see variation in teams in tournaments. Being a team game it takes more time for the tech beyond the "easy and effective day1 top tier" to be developed.
Eg, for the first half a year when KOF02 dropped all you would see was Athena Billy Choi (team ABC), and while they stayed good throughout the game it took a while for people to unlock the really retarded characters like Angel and May Lee.
With KOF13 it was even slower, on console release King was thought to be trash, Kim mid tier, Robert top tier, Chin and Duolon were considered below average until evo, Shen Woo was everywhere because he was good and easy, etc. It took one year for people to caught on how good was Mr. Karate and for counter teams to develop around him, and at least one and a half for people to wise up on how stupid EX Iori is (which at first was considered good but the weakest DLC character and turned out to be the best character in the game).
I don't follow much marvel but you can see a similar development in teams. This shit just takes time, I'd wager only this evo or after is when you'll see some different characters.

So me and my friends have been talking of getting into fighting games (again) and the talk has come down to Blazblue versus Guilty Gear and MVC3 versus Skullgirls (the focus being on the former). I'm playing BB:CPEX right now because another circle of friends plays it so it was a buy case anyway so I know a bit about it.

But we're all totally clueless on Guilty Gear. Is there a hard and fast like point for point on this of what each offers versus the other and in general? GG seems mighty expensive for us to go in on a whim and it'd be never talked about in my fighting game circles. Is it worth my friends picking up BB:CPEX or is it an idea to wait for a PC CF?

We've no real interest in SF if it's gonna be brought up, it was out in first round elims.

KI is more about covering your matchups with you mains.
The characters that can do well standalone aka no other character picks to back them up is more accurate to be honest of who's good. I would never bring Kim Wu as my only main to a tourney let alone as my secondary or my third...or my nth to be honest she's clearly outdone by many characters.
