Holy fucking shit, I said its brand is FROM 1927, not that it was only made in 1927.

Fucking kill yourself you stupid unity using nodev, I can dev circles around you like it was fucking nothing, I'd open up codeblocks and made several quake clones before you even drag your first drop. I'm sick of copy-paste kiddies like you shitting up indie game development, thinking your hot shit when all you ever did was download model and code assets.
>>
>>171352829
Most games don't need it. I do because most of my game is text and the reason to play a lot of the game is for a well-structured and thought out experience.

When you've got something like 3-5 hours of gameplay/narrative to construct, you really need to have a well-worked out structure. Unless you're just a natural at writing, I guess.

I'm not, so I use Dramatica to help me ensure everything knits well together. Or, well, as well-knitted as I can get it to be.

I think it's time for you to use Panda3D instead of Unity/UE4.
>>

It's one too many layers. You've negated the point of having an elemental damage and resistance system in the first place: attack it with a different element.

Don't make a boss that resists all elements?

Think about why you're adding the systems in the first place. If everything has super high resistances, you just force the player to get weapons with resistance piercing. It's a retarded meta, with extra lines of text and abilities and stats to comprehend, all for net zero change.

>>
>>171366293
Adding piercing is actually because of such considerations, because you have to give up something else that could potentially be more useful like int boosts or mp regen. Choices and all that.

>>171366513
>>171366584
But piercing is a tool to deal with that. Plenty of RPGs have bosses that magic does fuck all to. I'm not sure I'll wind up ever doing that, but that was again, just an example.
>>
>>171366804
>Plenty of RPGs have bosses that magic does fuck all to.

>>171367387
Honestly, I'd say that's rather shitty, because you're suddenly making 2 games in one, and have to do two. Players are bound to like one or the other instead of both, as well. So basically, don't chase two rabbits, pick one or the other to catch.

Is it harder to make a videogame in 2d, 2.5(diablo/poe) or 3d?

Depends on how many animations the game has. If it has many of them, then 2d is very difficult and time consuming, I'd say, but without many animations, 3d is harder.

For fighting games for example 2d would be definitely harder, because tend to pay so much attention to very detailed animations.

Surprisingly, not an easy task to get this dropdown box working properly. The default Unity dropdown box code insisted on showing the choices upwards, without any scrollbar. It also created a new copy of the choices each time you opened the dropdown box (instead of reusing the existing one), which slowed down the game each time you opened it. Thankfully, it's in C# so I made changes, I also started making use of Text Mesh Pro since it became free in the asset store.

Your head proportions are atrocious but the legs look fine. Elongate the torso. Drop the waist back a bit. Give more room between the tits and the pussy and add a bit more vertices to the torso in general. Also I wouldn't apply smoothing shading to everything. Just work in flat shading and then apply it later to check progress.

It's like 60% of the way to a good beginner model. Keep at it.

But if you do decide to scrap it and start over, start over fresh and follow a tutorial like >>171373738 said.
>>
>>171369383
Themes are not for restriction, but for cohesion.
>>
>>171374265
But in a jam the goal of the themes is to place restrictions on devs to encourage creativity. Then again, thats something that would work way better if the theme was a surprise for the devs, or we had shorter jams.
>>
>>171368363
The B, mostly because there's the word "teenager"
>>
>>171374514
Except it's not. Just look at the past AGDG jams. I can't point a single one that even attempted to impose restrictions because that's not the point of jams. The themes are intended as a form of aggregating the jam games together. When you saw a space game during space jam you cold instantly recognize it as a space jam game. This is what makes it a good theme. The same applies to halloween, winter, dino. And this is what makes loli a good theme.
>>
>>171368363
>hard black on internal outlines
NOT VOTING
>>
>>171374678
And that's why in my opinion most agdg jams are shit. If you can make arcanoid or tetris clone and put a loli on it and call it a proper game for loli jam. there is no creativity there, much less a challenge.

what do you guys think about stencil shadowing in FPS games like FEAR?

When I've played Witcher 3, I came to a dreadful realization that I'm almost completely ignoring the fidelity of the game world, unless something goes wrong.
They've put insane amount of work into making it look and act the way it is and I feel that it ironically goes completely underappreciated because of it.

players don't recognize the hours of work put into it, but the "world feel" is something they do appreciate, and while witcher is described as "open world" players are always directed in their path of travel, so it's more like an ant farm, players will most explore everywhere and are not able to go where content hasn't been placed. so everything put into the world is seen by the player at somepoint, so no work is wasted. and that's reflected atleast in metacritic if not sales

Game dev is incredibly time demanding. The bare minimum would be 3 hours/day with 4 - 5 being the ideal amount to make good progress. this is such a fucking joke

is this adobe astroturfing or something?

how about you actually go get a law degree and learn what you are talking about, retard.

First of all, it is not illegal to use cracked adobe software.

Secondly, the files that you create are yours alone unless they are derivative or contain a substantial copyright work, for example if adobe put a large peom into the file format and claimed that this means that if you share the .psd then you need their permission for copyright on their poem which is embedded in part of the .psd file layout.

Except something retarded like that wouldn't actually hold up in court and adobe would be shit out of luck.

The only way you can be persecuted is if you redistribute to other people copies of adobe software, or if you share cracking tools as that would be a DMCA violation.

but if someone gives you a copy of cracked adobe software you can use that and proudly admit it and you have 0 legal liability

But at the same time, Adobe, and autodesk probably dont give a shit enough to come after everyone making a shitty game.

I guarantee 3/4 people on patreon are probably still using their pirates

To be honest it's not hard to get a job there so long as you're not a straight white male.

>Name one unexpected thing that helped you land your job at BioWare.

>Janice: I took a shot, and they were thankfully willing to take a chance on me. I didn’t think I was qualified at all. I hadn’t written code in three to four years. But I took a shot. I think a lot of us suffer from being self-conscious, or not having as much confidence as we should, so be confident.

>Claire: I refused to do something, actually. The interviewer asked what I wanted to do, and I was like, “I would like to do dragons.” They replied, “We don’t do dragons, we do spaceships.” “I don’t want to do the spaceships,” I said. “Well, we do spaceships.” [laughs] They decided they wanted someone who knew what they wanted to do and I said alright, I’ll take the job.

You can google the sentences or just some keywords and the article will come up. I'm not linking it cause I don't want to indirectly give them any more hits.

>Karin: The interview question I never expected to get was, “If you had 24 hours on a holodeck, what would you do?” I stopped, paused and then responded with, “I don’t think I can actually tell you what I would do in a job interview.” The reply was, “That’s the right answer.”

>Jo: Hearing about people who have been inspired or helped by our games. There’s been so many cases of that, with people saying, “Playing as this character helped me realize more about myself or my sexuality or about who I am.” A lot of people say our games helped them get through something really difficult and that’s humbling.

>If you could give one piece of advice to women looking to enter the industry, what would it be?

>Claire: Start on your project instead of learning. You learn more by doing. And do something you like. If you don’t like making it, people won’t like playing it.

>Janice: Keep learning. That might mean staying in school, reading a lot, or picking up a free game engine.

>If you could go back in time before you got into games and tell yourself one thing, what would that be?

>Karin: You don’t have to wear gaming t-shirts and jeans for the first three years of your career. You don’t need to force yourself to fit in. It’s okay to keep on being you.

can i use an array to check for a single variable? and can that array update "dynamically"? i did some reading and all the array examples seem to check specific slots in the array instead of the entire thing.

what i'm trying to do would look like

babiesfirstarray = pepe;

if (babiesfirstarray = pepe) {
babaiesfirstarray += wojak;
}
if (babiesfirstarray = wojak) {
do thing;
}

but sometimes the array would be empty, other times it might have 5 different values. also i'm sure my syntax is wrong.

You mean you want to check if a particular value is present in the array? Like your array is [1, 2, 4, 8] and you want to check "is 4 in the array" (= true) or "is 5 in the array" (= false)?

I don't know GML but usually there is a "contains" method, or an "in" operator ("if (the_value in the_array) ..."). In some languages there is only an "indexOf" method, which gives you the index where it found the thing if it's present, or returns a special value such as -1 if it didn't find the thing.
>>
>>171381752
Are you trying to check for an == value between a var and an element of the array?

like:
int x = 5
if array[0] == x) thing;

?

So you want a dynamic array.

typically youd use a for/each statement

Not sure on the appending syntax of GM, but typically you just iterate through and then append at the beginning or end.
[0] or [0..$-1] being the length - 1 or end of the array.

I think it's okay. It's still got plenty of problems, but I think you'd learn and develop faster by working on other images and animations instead of polishing this one for too long. Of course the mc's walk cycle is pretty important so you'll probably want to redo it when you have more experience.

For those making 3D, is it generally a better idea to texture paint directly onto the model than using a program like photoshop to paint the map? Unwrapping a complex character model seems like it would take a long fucking time and it seems more intuitive to just paint directly onto the model and use nodes to tweak it.

If so, what's the best texture painting software? Substance Painter 2?

In my case yes, I tried to do pixel art but it never worked out. I'm pretty sure this kind of art is harder in general, and definitely more time consuming.
I'm taking shortcuts to get things done faster though, namely less frames at the cost of not smooth animations. I don't really care though, it doesn't affect the gameplay and I'm not really good at animating.

>>171388424
A lot of googling.... jokes aside (not really) it's basically A* pathfinding. Start of the level it does a loop and checks which parts of the grid (in 32x32 tiles) are empty and which has obstacles. Then it calculates the cost of moving to a goal point (which is the player).

I then use bolean values to seperate which enemies are triggered or not. Hope that made sense, i barely know myself what i did.

That sprite res is pretty big, bud. Either way, your best bet is to just google "character sprite" and look at some different styles of hair. Your character design lends itself to anime styles like early final fantasy or 'chibi' so start there, I guess.

Here's how it works:
You make a game or assets outside of Autodesk TOS and sell them.
In doing that, you comply with your country's tax laws, there are now numerous records linking you 100% to the stuff you made while infringing TOS.
Eventually, you either make it big or try to enter the industry officially. Suddenly, you're under scrutiny, either from a prospective employer who desperately doesn't want to get audited by one of the most audit-happy companies around, a publisher or just in general. Someone actually takes a look at your game or your career history and either determines (very easily, because of the trail you're leaving) that it's suspicious or finds evidence directly linking you to TOS infringement. Suddenly, you're under legal scrutiny and probably in the process of getting audited, sued or both. At this point you're probably thinking back to how you fucked up your chances of ever being truly successful by setting yourself up for failure the moment you get anywhere near a legitimate job instead of being a big boy and installing Blender or entering the industry in one of the thousand possible 100% legal ways..
Finally you're put on an industry blacklist, or, in extreme cases, in federal prison and, as a result, I never have to work with you. So really what I'm saying is I think you should do it. Everyone in /agdg/ should do it. Right now.

Game is a small party RPG which has cursed items like in roguelikes which can't be taken off unless you use a special spell. There's stuff like a sword that turns you berserk whenever you kill an unit, armor that applies bleed every combat turn but also gives you increased health regen and the such. Another item is a Slave Collar that sets the initiative stat to 0 and the party member has to be "commanded" by other party members to do their actions instead of acting on their own. (On the plus side they gain more stamina, because "slaves are pushed harder" or shit. )

Hey /agdg/, I could use some advice. I'm planning to make an engine that deals mostly with old school graphics and effects, such as mode 7, palette cycling, and all that. This is all mostly for experience. So I thought I'd start by using SDL for window and controls and using OpenGL for the rendering stuff.

After some digging around, people say to learn and use OpenGL 3.3 and above. But those versions are not that widespread compared to 2.1, so I thought of just sticking to the old version. Are there any things I should watch out with it?

This thing was my most "successful" tweet. If you wanna call 25 likes successful. For me it is a lot of feedback.

It's a model I made in early 2015, two months after starting out with 3D modelling, while listening to the sleepycabin podcast (so an effort of about 1-2 hours).

No matter what I do, I could never again get the kind of resonance I got out of this.
No matter how good I get. No matter how many new concepts I learn.
No matter what I show to people, they are uninterested. They wanna see the low poly "retro" graphics, they don't wanna see what I work on if it isn't stylized that way.

If I just did this for the feedback I'd have stopped long ago. Today I checked the time I've been on this project and I don't even wanna go into that, because the amount of feedback it is getting after such a long time is embarrasing to me.

You think not having an insanely large fanbase is depressing?
Well put yourself into my shoes then anon.

I literally do not have a single social media account, be it twitter, facebook, tumblr or whatever.

And I really don't care because I've never gotten "close enough" to release my game. When I do I'll just put it on steam and hope for the best. I don't need a huge fanbase, I'd prefer a cult following, and Steam is actually a pretty good source of exposure for your game.

If 100 people buy my game I'll be happy, if 1000 do it I'll be ecstatic.

Yes.
It's a very simple dynamic actually.

People prefer styles they can connect with in a certain way. Mostly on the basis of something they already know, like a popular TV show or a game they already played.

It's one of the reasons why undertale got quite a following, or why as >>171395580 put it the vector drawn taco gets a thousand likes. Because people know that style from earthbound or that flat shaded simplistic and colorful style from the current generation of TV cartoons.

Let me put it like this:
If you are really just out for followers, look at Stevens Universe, look at Adventure Time, look at Bee and Puppycat, look at Bravest Warriors.
By now you should realize that all of these share a very specific, simplistic style, that can easily be mapped onto low poly 3D modelling. You don't even need to texture that shit. And even if you have to it's maybe a gradient or a very simple shape, It's really simple all around.

Then post that into some fan community.
If you are clever you already got it running on Unity with some really simple mechanics.

That produces followers.
The shit I do? It doesn't. I'm making a fucking King's Field clone. The best I can hope for is to ride the Dark Souls train, cause - to be honest - even the more advanced mechanics I took from thief won't create any resonance. That's all WAAAAAY to complex (I'm not being sarcastic by the way. If all the time you got to impress someone is a 3 second gif, you shouldn't try it by showing a lockpicking or a stealth mechanic).

Appealing to the mainstream is not the only way to get attention, if you are doing something niche then you need to make that niche's audience aware that you even exist, Tumblr is a good blog but not a marketing platform.

if it's a base model for high poly then make it a quad for proper subdividing. if it's the final model then make it into triangles so it won't triangulate in a shitty way once it's rendered and/or animated

n-gons can be time savers in certain situations, but on deforming and finished models they're usually just an unnecessary hassle to deal with.

It seemed to be almost an issue with my Intel HD 4000, which only supports 3.3 core. Anything older than that would probably have problems. And lots of games still support directx 9 as a minimum.

The goal would be one size fits all, since I'm not planning to do anything graphically intensive. And I'm not sure what else I'd use from OGL 3.0+ other than FBOs, and there is an extension for that.

Hi, just a heads up - you don't have to use OpenGL in your case. At all. if you don't want to, SDL 1 or 2 can handle the rendering using SDL_Surfaces without the need of OpenGL. With SDL, you would be transforming the pixels of a surface onto another surface.

For example, here is (paletted!) sprite scaling done purely in software with SDL (well technically the SNES isn't capable of without the use of the FX2 chip but)

Despite my animation skillz (or lack thereof), progress is progress! The enemy can now jab. The animation needing more frames is something I can work on later. I also went and made the player dodging animation more dramatic because they previously didn't actually move far enough to make it look like they were dodging punches. Hitboxes not activated yet because it's easier to test this shit with them off (and also I haven't made the player or enemy have HP variables yet so it wouldn't do too much good at this point)

The thing that tumblr won't tell you is how long that blog has been running. Also being in the sidebar helps a lot; Even if a tumblr's only about stupid food gradients, if it's an 8 year old blog that's gotten featured so it's showing up in the sidebar it's going to get a number of notes.

There's been a ton of Toriel porn months before the game even released.
Of course it's not just that. But it is a nice accelerant.

>Also, what do you think about my goblin king tho
Face is a little hard to read.
You need to clean up some pixels.
The left ear has some green outline.
You should look into shading. Currently the red provides some pillow shading, but you can get more expressive on that.
I recommend you take a modular approach for practice. Draw only the head. Maybe even a couple of times. Once you are done do the same with the arms, the body the legs, etc.

I've actually considered getting my content out in smaller communities like maybe RPG Codex or various other pages.

I should probably not bitch too much about feedback, since currently there is a lot of stuff wrong with this project. The only name that is connected to it is a twitter and a tumblr account. Not really maximum effort on the side of getting it out there.

>>171398753
>get off your high horse, faggot. your models are "generic medieval gritty RPG #935235803514"

I am making a medieval gritty RPG but that's a mighty big assumption you're making right there anon.

Also there is one thing you don't realize. The dynamic we are talking about is already determining whether people will even bother downloading a demo or not.
Marketing is all about style and zero substance, even if I had the biggest kings field fan in front of me. If all I can do is really quickly showing that guy screenshots (which is pretty much the same as scrolling through steam releases or a tumblr or a twitter account) you need style, style, style and nothing else.
Maybe really short burst of gameplay gifs. Funny, silly stuff.
Capture them with story and the bigger interaction of several mechanics? Forget about it anon. We are living in a world oversaturated with information. The target audience doesn't have that time.

my point was to not be a bitter faggot and pull the "the audience is too stoopid and that's why no one appreciates my genius!!!" shit. the fact is all you've been posting is screenshots of the environment and characters, which aren't that interesting, when you should be focused more on what makes your game different in terms of mechanics, gameplay, storyline, etc etc. just posting "pretty pictures" is a dead end. you think people on tumblr who reblog shitty low-poly-flat-shading garbage you were talking about, actually PLAY or BUY those games? no, they just repost shit to repost shit.

I never said or implied that. I said that people connect with things they already know. Ideally popular things because those already have a big community.

>you think people on tumblr who reblog shitty low-poly-flat-shading garbage you were talking about, actually PLAY or BUY those games?

That is irrelevant to the marketing aspect though. Even if only 10 out of a thousand actually play the game it will still be more successful than if I only have 5 mentions from 5 loyal fans that will certainly buy and play it.
I mean that's nice and everything, but who's to say that the experience of 5 loyal fans is more genuine than that of the other guys?
I'm not making a big difference there to be honest.

>your modelling and texturing is top-notch but your sense of design is poor and you really need to use more references to get a feel for how architecture works

Well I think it's the details pass. Because that's actually the thing that's missing. But I suppose you have something very specific in mind. Post a reference of what you think it should look like. From my perspective it's hard to see what's wrong with pillars and archs.

there's nothing wrong with the arches and pillars, its the way you assemble a bunch of props in a very generic way. is it a church? a great hall? a castle? why are there banners? why is there a bathroom tile floor? why are the windows so tiny?

Actually all the level parts aren't represent by polygons (at least not solid shapes), just points.
Mapping the floor graphics is really simple and is done programmatically.

You take every set of 2 points on the ground (which is just an array of points), generate the 4 vertices needed for the quad. You have the top 2 vertices already, the bottom two are the top two + height (you choose).

These vertices are all in a vertex buffer for drawing the ground in one call.

For mapping walls and floating platforms I do it in the editor by placing images where those things are.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but you know you're literally the only person that has been going on with this for a good couple of weeks now, right?

The reason I have not changed this yet is because it hasn't offended my eyes so badly that I'd have taken the time to change it.
And I didn't want to make a clean checkerboard pattern, ironically because I thought it was too generic.
And I'm still of that opinion.
I'd rather take rough rocks over the whole marble thing, however that room is mostly there for testing gameplay elements.
And I want to make marble an actual gameplay element when it comes to stealth.

I've looked and it does look like the kind of floor you wouldn't let people walk on in boots covered in mud and horseshit.
Important rooms and halls with fancy floors in castles I've visited tended to look fancy overall, not just the floors. There was a good deal of detail on the walls and pylons

Linking together Health, Currency, and Magic into 1 thing for my adventure game, good idea or bad idea?

Lets call this thing gems. So you can find gems all over the world of varying value, you buy items with gems, you sell items and get gems, you get hurt and you lose gems, you use magic and you lose gems, you have zero gems you die.

All you have is assets. They're really damn good assets for 1ma but that's not going to grab anyone. And it's just realism; there is no style. A thousand other games can look like that. Heck you might as well be making an asset pack. Even games with realistic art styles like that usually incorporate memorable visual elements in the character designs and set pieces. The gameplay you've shown so far is rudimentary at best and nothing you've said (that I know of) has indicated that you're attempting anything that stands apart as unique from other games that already exist.

I'm not telling you anything you don't know so far. But it's not about memepoly or Adventure Time graphics. People latch onto anything that's unique or stimulating. Trying to copy your way into a fad is usually a quick way to failure because they burn out too fast and people can tell. You're better off forgetting everything you think people want and relying on genuine creativity instead.

Give people ANY reason to consider your work a positive contribution to the medium and they will start to pay attention to those pretty, pretty graphics.

Testing rooms can also be used to "test" asset packs and create focal points. But if it collides with gameplay testing obviously visual design is gonna get the short end of the deal over gameplay relevant environments.

It depends on the language, afaik.

Some variables are references to objects. They hold NULL, not as zero, but to state that their reference hasn't been set. Some languages, when you declare an int, for example, will declare its initial value to be 0 if you do not declare one for it.

It all depends, but no, null and 0 are not the same thing

I disagree with you, because they are. And I agree with you, because if you are who I think you are, then you should not lewd them, because they are pure.

Thing is, social media is it's own angle.

You have to really be social. I've just started, I have 26 followers but you get more by posting shit on your twitter regularly, and getting yourself out there and commenting!

There has been only a bunch of games where animated sex scenes looked really decent and most of them were Visual Novels illustrated by god tier artists, like Mochizuki Nozomu, Sano Toshihide and Happoubi Jin, who are absolute top heavy weights in the whole fucking industry.
Most people can't even hope to get anywhere near their level.

It's a good technique that I learned from some art series. It forces you to use your imagination. From one of this guys videos: https://www.ctrlpaint.com/

Thank you, kind anon! I hope, however, that one day Glasses moth will also catch the attention of an artist, or your game will be big enough to have a wallpaper section on its home page, with pictures for all the characters, so I could make her sit in the corner of my monitor to help me dev.
