Cooking Up Trouble Edition
Previous jej: >>171074784

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Garry's Mod
>GearBlocks
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade
>Starwanderer

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

Nice meme. Also that ship has so much stuff that can be smelted into new refineries it's a wonder you don't play on creative mode.

Skywankers still doesn't have physics like spengies, where you can chunk ships and watch parts fly off. No space graveyards.
>>
>>171310436
If you grind down the entire ship besides the assembler and 1 solar panel, then yeah, I suppose you could make a refinery if you dissassemble all the interior plates. Cause it doesnt have enough steel for a refinery in it.

The SS autism is coming along well. Battery is down to 35% (thanks for broken batteries KEEN) which should be enough to get a refinery up. Up to 36 Tons of raw ship goodness now.

Hydrogen thrusters are a life saver. The platinum for ion thrusters are still out of reach but a single omni thruster is enough to park near an asteroid. Ever try towing a big ship with a small ship? It's rough on flight stability.

You still have to build the damn thing, and if you're the dull barely-pass type of guy who rolls over when your team lead proclaims "it'llsavenvironment" without doing any research yourself, you'll be pretty fucking disappointed when it barely makes enough power to charge your phone. Worse, it might make too many or too few volts to do even that. The Guy who roped you into it googles "power conversion", sees a squiggly integral symbol and shouts "fuck it, it's too complicated". You're stuck poring over the Chinese multimeter he bought at Radio Shack because a senior told him he'd need it, watching ghostly numbers flicker by as he pedals the bike like a maniac.

1.08 V. 0.98 V. These digits mean nothing to you, and only intensity your wonder at where you're going in life. Student loans. The job hunt. 2.50 V.

"I wanna fuck her pussy," the Guy grunts at the sight of a business major, pedalling faster.

Not really a thing unity will support. There's a whole fucktonne of shit unity does to export and I'm mostly sure dicking with it after the fact without dedicated support in the game's files is a big bad. And by that I mean a few hundred hours dedicated to adding mod support, which we don't have.

I don't think REM should have tanks, tanks do not fit within the original vision of a tank free game about non-tank spaceships shooting each other. In light of this tank menace, I am starting the NTTFREMBWDLT, the No Tank Tank-Free REM Because We Don't Like Tanks. Our brotherhood will soon purge REM of the tank menace. Amen and be tank free my brothers.

On the day of the science fair, you've all but mastered your role. You know what the 'V' and 'A' settings on the multimeter do, and you know what to say after turning the knobs to those positions. The snooty rich kid making a maglev train said to try the symbol that looks like a nose piercing, said something about 'connectivity' and 'resistance', but all that did was make a scary noise when you measured the bike dynamo. You make a mental note to avoid that setting forever.

The fair commences and drags on. You're tired of telling white girls in fishtail parkas and jeggings that 'V' is for 'Voltage' while the Guy puts the moves on them. Yes, we get it: it's a fitness AND an eco-friend, do you have time this weekend? Meanwhile, your professor struts around with a clipboard and looks at every fucking project but yours. In particular he stays with the maglev kid for years before lowering himself to see your creation. Yes, there he is. There's that Indian handlebar moustache motherfucker. You smile at him, not because you want to be polite but because you remembered a meme about shitting streets.

"Yes sir. We've made the math. We've calculated the formulas. We've engineered the theory and researched the high-quality design you see before you." You kiss your clipboard against his-- yours full with 3.07 V, 5.19 V and 0.01 A, and his with PASS PASS PASS FAIL.

Shit, he's got an iPhone? That wasn't the plan. How many Voltages do they use? Was it 5 like your Samsung? Everything now depends on the Guy being able to pedal hard enough to make that thing go 'BZZT' and show a green battery that goes to the right.

He straddles the bike, bites his lower lip and thinks about yoga pants. The Power Cycle whinges and shrieks as he pedals at an inhuman pace. "Almost there," you assure him of the Voltage rising steadily in the corner of your vision. 4.1, 4.5, 4.9...

The professor's iPhone buzzes and for a moment, he looks happy to pass you. Then smoke pours from the screen.

>coal in plastics
You only need one belt of coal to produce two belts worth of plastic.

>A single yellow belt will suffice up to around 100 steam engines and 144 furnaces
A single yellow belt carrying coal will transport roughly 106 MW worth of fuel.
144 smelters will consume 25.92 MW, while the 140 boilers associated with the steam engines will consume 109.2 MW by themselves.
Did you forget to account for the power loss in boilers? (A boiler produces heat worth 390 kW, but consumes fuel worth 780 kW)

The bike would output a wildly variable voltage so there has to be a way to stabilize it (i'm thinking about the way a capacitors help with turning the pulsed voltage into a continuous one when used in a rectifier bridge)

Going off the top of my head: It depends if the dynamo output is AC or DC (latter if it's brushed, or you're running a brushed motor in reverse). If it's AC it will first need rectifying with a bridge, either way it will need to be smoothed with an LC or RC filter. Either way you'll wind up with a DC signal that slowly varies in magnitude depending on how hard you're pedaling.

Changing that into 5V again depends on whether it was AC or DC. If it's DC then you're stuck making a buck-boost converter, which uses closed-loop control to maintain the right voltage. Basically you turn the input to the circuit on and off at a high frequency, varying the duty cycle depending on how much buck or boost you need.

If it was AC then you could get away with a thyristor bridge. You replace the diodes in the bridge with thyristors, which are like controllable diodes. By applying high-current pulses to the bases you can change the time or 'firing angle' at which the thyristors start to conduct. Effectively you get a bridge with variable duty cycle and hence average voltage, which you try to make 5V. This then gets smoothed by the LC or RC filter.

Most small-scale systems which provide usable power from highly-variable energy sources (solar, wind) use a switching regulator to convert what you have to what you need.

Larger systems are more likely to perform matching mechanically (e.g. large wind turbines vary the blade pitch so that the generator rotates at a constant speed regardless of wind speed).

For charging a phone, you'd want to have the generator charge a battery then charge the phone from that. You can charge a battery with whatever power is available, whereas a phone charger will want a fixed voltage and will dictate its own current draw.

I don't think he actually did his math right.
In particular 2+2 physics should be essentially symmetric under swapping the two space dimensions with the two time dimensions.
>>
>>171393965
How would 2 spatial and 2 time dimensions even work, anyway? Wouldn't they be flatlanders experiencing two directions of causality?
>>
>>171394463
Causality is there exactly because in a single time dimension you cannot evade what is to come.

A spatial dimension implies controllable motion within that dimension, while "time" implies a constant mostly unchanging motion. I'm not going to pretend I can imagine how a second causality would function, or how two time dimensions could be distinctly noticeable, but I do know that two spatial dimensions means that the beings in this poorly constructed fantasy land can only exist as amorphous blobs of geometry.

>I’ve spoken before about how Freejam occasionally conducts AB tests to help us gather information about how to improve the game. The way this works is that you separate two groups of users (normally at random) into groups A and B. You change the game so it’s different between group A and B and you measure their behaviour in game to see if it creates a positive effect in one group.

>Recently we’ve been conducting an AB test based on the question “If a new users gets a few kills and wins a few games in their first days play, are they more likely to come back the next day and play again?”

>So, we thought of the quickest way we could test this idea:

>New users in sample A: Received a damage and health buff which faded away over their first 20 battles, 5% at a time. This buff was enough to ensure it was more likely they’d get a kill in their first few games and more likely to be on a winning side (often this simply counters the fact that having a new users on your team of 5 can often result in your team being weakened), so the aim is a 50:50 win:loss rate and a 0.5 KDR

>New users in sample B: Received no buff at all

>Whilst this test is clearly unfair, it was a really quick way to test how much this makes a difference and didn’t prevent us doing lots of other cool developments like Custom Games, Reconnect, etc. that we’re also working on bringing you as soon as we can. We’d love to be more transparent about tests like this but clearly if we communicated the test it would affect the results.

>In this test we were looking at the % of users in A and B who came back and played again next day. We expected the test to result in the users in group A being more likely to come back, but we wanted to know how much ‘getting kills and winning’ affected the users chances of coming back. The results were a surprise. Those in A where almost 30% more likely to come back the next day than those in B.
>>
>>171425260

Also, Im just gonna point out that Freejam does these "AB" tests all the time. So if you've been playing and something feels "off", like you seem to be taking way more damage than usual, or your vehicle is handling like shit one day and fine a few days later, its because they are doing AB tests and not telling anyone they are secretly altering things to see how players react.

You poor, sad bastard. You have no idea what's coming.

Spoilers: most of the ships are designed by minmaxing autists on the forums. Even the "easy" ones are CPU-killing monstrosities with some kind of fucking gimmick you need to cheese to beat.

Also, easiest shipbuilding is to build a fucking box out of metal, put hydrofoils all over the bottom sides, use an ACB to set hydrofoils to 10 degrees and slap some jets on the back. Instant 40+ m/s speed, absolutely no need for any further design or configuration. When you need more room, add more boxes.

Sure they are. The issue is that "easy" for a minmaxer isn't easy for anyone else. Minmaxed easy boils down to "how many different ways can you cheese the gimmick," not the effectiveness of the gimmick itself.

Consider the OW age of sail ships. Slow, explodey, useless against anything above or below the water, outside of cram range or agile enough to avoid a broadside. But if you don't have any of those, they are so FUCKING ENORMOUS that even one will put the whole game in degraded mode just by existing, and even though their combat rating per block is poor, they will rape whatever gets in firing range.

When the weaknesses and ensuing exploits are deliberate and dramatic, that is literally the same thing.

"Easy" in almost any other game is a general description of capability. If you set the ayys in Factorio to easy, they'll take a lot longer to build up and be generally weaker. They *won't* pick a single subtype of ayy to develop normally and call that "easy" because it makes them easier to cheese.

>>171443969

>When the weaknesses and ensuing exploits are deliberate and dramatic, that is literally the same thing

The weaknesses are different for each faction, though. What works against the Onyx Watch probably doesn't work as well against the White Flayers or Lightning Hoods. You have to make different machines or modify your existing ones to counter them

The game is better for it. A pc from 2014 can have quite a few ships over 5k and still record in 1080p so whatever.

The plea for sub-5k ships was probably to shift the emphasis from having one or two killer units to a more fleet oriented style of play, which you can still do anyway.
>>
>>171445228
Sure, although I think they go overboard with the specialization. A single ship type shouldn't be able to beat any faction all by itself.

The point remains that FtD "easy" designs aren't easy as it's typically understood. They're just easier to cheese.

>>171445317
>The dev himself said "Hey guys, keep everything under 5k blocks for performance reasons", and then the people who do the ships said "FUCK YOU 13K WITH EXTRA CANNONS SO WE GET EXTRA FCS LAG!".

I figured out how to move around, use the jetpack, etc., and I found the menu to build stuff out of your inventory, but when I actually try to place things I just get one massive size where the blocks stick together and another tiny size where the blocks don't stick together, and I need a size in between to build anything useful. I'm watching this tutorial on youtube where a guy explains how to build your first car for gathering resources but it hardly even looks like the same game.

There is no inbetween. Only large ship blocks and small ship blocks. They don't stick to the opposite type. So small sticks to small only.

See what you've done, /egg/

This is the sort of shit you have to put up with when you autistically screech MAIN BUS every thread ever. You get noobs like this guy thinking he needs 9/10ths of his base as a MAIN BUS comprising literally dozens of yellow belts, in most cases fed from single yellow belts.

This isn't organic, like natural newb spaghetti, and it isn't good planning, from understanding what needs bussed and what doesn't. this is "DA BIG BOYS GOT DA BIG BUS SO ME NEEDS DAT TOO"

And your "iron bottleneck", OP, is because you have 4 iron belts fed from a single half-full red belt that isn't balanced across the 4 iron belts when what you need is about 8x the number of smelters for that number of belts, which you can't feed from your puny ore supply, because you don't have trains up and running because you're BUILDING DAT BUS

The ss autism is slowly but surely growing. 78T plus enough rare metals to finally build THINGS now.

Battery power is totally gone but I got just enough of a uranium seed to get everything going. I can now process all the other metals. Yield modules help take some of the burden off of all the autism mining.

I'm really scared of detatching the rotor to fly around in the starter pod. It's possible that once I separate I won't be able to re attach it again, and if I bumped the station and sent it flying off I'll be totally screwed. I took some precautions, but there's just no way to build huge block thrusters right now and I barely have enough platinum for 6 baby ions. The safest solution is to build a new ship.

I build an arbitrarily large number of 1-block vessels.
Said vessels are placed in a fleet with one arbitrarily large combat vessel, which is highest in the spawn priority.
Because each side in a battle are given at least one ship (regardless of block limits), the combat vessel is the only spawn.
Seeing as there's no upper limit to the combat vessel's size, it is effectively guaranteed a victory in the ensuing 1v1 fight.
Meanwhile, the 1-block vessels stay alive because they never spawn in.

I win. Next challenge.

I'm thinking the ship would look like a subsonic, twin-engined F-35B. Twin high-bypass turbofans with 360 thrust vectoring, shaft-driving a pair of front-facing ducted fans with similar vectoring and common intake with its own turbine. All four thrusters would face downwards for hovering. With careful thrust vectoring it could pitch/roll/yaw freely and fly in all six directions.

By default, the ship is specced for indefinite hovering and travelling efficiently at """low""" speed (~500 km/h) and to tank huge amounts of damage. The body doesn't make much lift without the front thrusters, but you can afford to lose them if you fly at a retarded AoA and try for a crash landing. There's no afterburners by default, but it's the easiest thing to add although it will stress the cooling system massively.

>>171479705
Six Degrees of Failure?
>>
>>171485993
Also the entire control loop would be open to tinkering. I wouldn't torture the player to design it from scratch, but you'll start off with a mushy self-leveling type. If you want it to have orientation lock when you let go of the controls, you'll have to implement that yourself or find a pre-programmed control chip that might have bugs or a virus.

I meant with a hemispherical range of motion, sorry. Something like the F-35's nozzle with an extra ring bearing for the roll axis.

I don't think it's an inappropriate label, because if the nozzle is pitched straight down and rolled all the way, it will have technically rolled 360 degrees.

>>171488396

I'm trying to figure out how you'd make that work without being slow as molasses to pivot or just rip itself apart at the seams.

I think the best option is really just to take F-35 style 1d vectoring, slap cascade cancelers on the end, and use a pair of engines with AV-8B style secondary outlets. That oughta give you full attitude control and hovering.

The issue is when you stall, or reach a nearby status.
>>
>>171503387
Having intakes on the bottom-front would be the way to go then.

Going by this pic >>171501520 the air would have to make a pretty extreme turn in the driven fan's intake, but given that it has to make two consecutive 90-degree turns in the F-35B's roll nozzles, this shouldn't pose much of a problem.
>>
>>171503387
Yeah, it goes without saying that stalling fucks that over, I was thinking about ideal conditions.
>>
>>171504264
For the front one isnt that much of an issue since it will only push down, same as the f35, and turn off when going normal, but you will have an asymetrical pressure on the sides when flying since one of the intakes is closed.

I'dd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as /egg/, is in fact, /egg/ formerly /svgg/, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, autistic space legos general. /egg/ is not a general unto itself, but rather a fuision of a fully fledged community of Marek's anal coquest victims, kerbnigger shitposters, and that one guy who might as well be Nick, for he's the only one still playing FtD. Many anons come here expecting engineering discussion, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, this general managed to avoid the ded, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically a shitposting platform, dedicated to space and voxels. There really is an /egg/, and these people are posting in it, but it is just a part of the /svgg/.
>>
>>171551182
We are following the same historic creation process that turned Titanfall General ( /tfg/ ) into The Fast General, where Tribes, Quake and other 'fast' FPS found a home and helped stave off the imminent death of Titanfall General proper. Spongos General ( /seg/ ) merged into the prior /svgg/, and when we picked up more games that weren't space, but still voxel and making things and clang, it became /egg/. Only, other than /tfg/, we're Schroedinger's general. Dead and alive at the same time. A quantum general.

I think it's a god damn 408 cheytac, or something similar. Width matches up, I estimated the length of a bullet by subtracting total length by case length and getting 38.29mm. Used my pixel method to calculate that bullets length as 31.6. Take into account some calculation errors and the fact that different styles of bullet will have different lengths, and I think it's just about a perfect match.

Flak has better penetration on heat resistant armor because it's like lots of tiny boolitz, and it's a lot cheaper. Nukes are better for taking out large groups of stuff with little to no armor, IE micro missiles and drones.

1.5x as expensive, and much less dense. The density is important for laser armored missiles because the smaller it is the less material it takes to armor it. Platinum seems like a nice material for maximum density and cheapness, but it sacrifices a lot of strength for that.

Question:
Will REM have legs?

Also, on a scale from Keen to Fun:

Game where you have to salvage scrap and perform maintenance on verious pieces to keep everything from breaking.
Worse yet, there is little standardization between parts so A LOT of jury rigging is required to make stuff play together in a semi-functional way
Player made components (even very complex ones) can be made but are a big investiment (unless is something very simple and unsophisticated)
Objective: survive and escape a spaceship graveyard the size of a small galaxy left after a massive universal war, threats range from automated weapon systems, rogue war machines, shambling hulks of various scrap around a ancient ship held together by the onboard AI, techno organical creatures feeding on the scrap, various pieces of techs playing havoc on the surroundings (from gravity wells generators to EMP fields, plus the odd "fuck with reality" device here and there), other scavengers trying to escape, other players, etc. etc.

Switch that graphite to nitrile rubber, for expendable stuff I recommend flak. It isn't very good against small stuff surprisingly enough, but no practical armor can stop it for long whereas nukes can be stopped quite effectively by the usual anti-laser armor. Pic related is my standard anti-ship missile, 20 kg warhead.

Just take a stock ship that already has a thick layer of armor like the gunship, then cut the armor down to one layer, change it to nitrile rubber/aramid fiber and up the thickness until it goes back to its original Delta V.

No no, I mean building itself. there's no build mode. Just clunky fps placement where you click and drag to determine placement

that's already miles better than starmade. starmade doesn't have click and drag - you have to manually input the dimensions of the block groups you want to place down. not to mention that the starmade build mode is for all intents and purposes also a "first person shooter" placement mode.

really now, how exactly is skywanderers less intuitive than starmade?

Not the 50% efficiency I wanted.
My autism doesn't permit me to use boosted fission nukes most of the time, I can't stand these numbers.

i-is this a good nuke /egg/-chan

Generally it's smarter to use an absurdly high-density reflector like osmium or platinum and always pick U-233 as core.

It also makes nukes much more expensive than they need to be.
>>
quick now someone build the biggest nuke
>>
>>171615458
Your detonator settings are all sorts of shit.

Don't ever set a hard range. I figure maybe it's useful for flak, but definitely not for nukes.

>Don't ever set a hard range.
And that's how you turn your nuclear missiles into KKVs
>>
>>171619550
Mine generally detonate on impact. I'm not sure what the problem with yours is.

How the hell do you use 760 rockets at once without crashing?
>>
>>171620139
That's nothing, I can - with some lag - launch 1000 micro-missiles and get them all on-target.
>>
>>171620214
What CPU do you have? Also, how many drones can you use at once?
>>
>>171620417
i5 6600K.
Haven't tested drones yet.

CHODE is the real engineering game.
>>
>>171621452
I want CHODE module design and science shit with Mexican (FAR) atmospherics and Spengos FPS/building.

Then we have real engineering.
>>
>>171621612
But Spengis has crappy building, FtD system is much better even with the crappy UI
>>
>>171621774
Yes, but FtD doesn't have block deformation and its scale/proportions suck.

Right, we should probably also have to build our own life support like in Empyrion.

Finnished, and low profile as i could.
Now to think how the fuck ill make a Shilka, i love that shit.
>>
>>171621923
I meant the system of building, not the parts themselves. SE system is bad because you're placing blocks 'in person', stuck with the floaty-as-heck FPS system and constrained by physical limitations
The FtD keyboard-based building is a dozen times better and more convenient, especially for large ships, because it lets you place and re-place things from anywhere without having to walk or tunnel your way through the damn thing yourself. You even get a special view to help you look at the insides of your machine and find the thing you're looking for
