There was an old hill titan skeleton in the moat of my fort that I abandoned. I came in as a necromancer and resurrected the skeleton and it became it's own named historical figure. I eventually lost track of it and apparently it settled in a town somewhere.

The place listed as its 'home' is this hamlet.

Those dingo men, dragon, and roc 'outcasts' are actually also my undead thralls who got separated from me and apparently settled somewhere.

I'm curious what they will do in the background once I play fort mode again.

I currently just broke through the ice layer in a glacier.
Designating a down stairs in the rock salt layer transforms it into a red sand stair while doing it an a dolomite layer transforms it into sandy clay loam down stairs.
And apparently a dolomite Cavern floor tile transformed into a sandy clay loam Cavern floor without me doing anything (maybe some ice melted?).
Is this supposed to happen?
Anyone know anything about this?

Still the minstrel sings enchantment,
Sings his sword with golden handle,
Sings it into gleam of lightning,
Hangs it in the sky above him;
Sings his cross-bow, gaily painted,
To a rainbow o'er the ocean;
Sings his quick and feathered arrows
Into hawks and screaming eagles;
Sings his dog with bended muzzle,
Into block of stone beside him;
Sings his cap from off his forehead,
Sings it into wreaths of vapor;
From his hands he sings his gauntlets
Into rushes on the waters;
Sings his vesture, purple-colored,
Into white clouds in the heavens;
Sings his girdle, set with jewels,
Into twinkling stars around him;
And alas! for Youkahainen,
Sings him into deeps of quick-sand;
Ever deeper, deeper, deeper,
In his torture, sinks the wizard,
To his belt in mud and water.

I know that economy can be a touchy subject, especially to people who remember it back in the day.
BUT, what if it's reintroduced as an option that can be turned later on into a forts life, for example:
>Get a steady fort
>You can assign a dwarf as treasurer
>Once you do that it opens new options to the fort
>Dwarves are payed for the amount of active duties they have as a seasonal paycheck
>But they also earn a bit for everyone work they finish (Mining, crafting ect. ect)
>You could have a bank, with a proper vault and workers whos job is to stand there and give out the pay to dwarves who come and pick it up
>Money could be Gold-Silver-Copper as these are all common ores
>If you lack these maybe you can assign some other ore as a substitute (Or maybe cloth/paper money)
Once you got this economy working you could start setting in a proper economy.
>Taverns would actually sell food and booze
>Shops for other things like clothes
>Dwarves would buy expensive things and get good thoughts
This would also establish a rich middle class that does fuck all but buy from stock producers and sell at high prices.
How does it sound?
Would such a thing even be possible?
>>
>>171286420

You mean IRL, right? Because you can see every settlement in a medium DF world in an afternoon if you don't get sidetracked or eaten by bogeys.
>>
>>171308136
If you actually limited yourself to travelling in real time, and actually explored the settlements thoroughly, rather than just run to the keep or temple and then never visiting the town again, it would actually take quite a while to see all the towns.

Plus you can't cross a medium df world on foot or in travel mode at that pace, not even with one of my hypertime Spd 10.0 modventurers.

Either you were questporting around from site to site, which will only get you enough time to see all the buildings in hamlets/hillocks in a few dozen sites before day change, or you were fucking around doing shit like using launch to ride some poor fucker across the world at half the speed of light, which will still eat up time in game.

An afternoon in real life can be a few seconds in an old ass FPS:Hahahahahaha, Nope fort, or it can be weeks in adventurer mode, or millenia in world-gen.

I know you meant "without fast travel" and not really "in real time", but I'm a pedantic kind of guy so I'm pointing it out anyway.
>and actually explored the settlements thoroughly
I think that's moving the goalposts a bit, and not really reasonable. Not because it would be difficult, mind. Settlements in DF are, despite all the variety in its guts, astoundingly similar to one another. Exploring a settlement thoroughly will amount to walking down mostly-empty streets to see rows of mostly-empty buildings, which will look a whole lot like the mostly-empty streets and mostly-empty buildings in the last settlement you explored. The people you encounter will be doing very little and and will tell you very similar things to the people you encountered in the previous settlement. If you start diving into sewers or worldgen forts you're going to at least find somewhat more interesting layouts and residents, but at that point you're more dungeon crawler than settlement explorer.
But anyway, you said "seeing all the towns", not thoroughly exploring them. Walking through a town in DF and seeing the market, mead hall, keep and temple (if it even has those) will show you everything worth exploring there if you aren't interested in a dungeon dive or poking NPCs long enough to a snatch of unique text out of them. Something similar could probably be said about most towns in Belarus.

No, but I get what you mean. The locations update was certainly a step in the right direction for making settlements busier places, but there's still a long way to go. Even there the activities you get to see and participate in will be confined to a lot of shallow and repetitive conversation or contextless violence.
I don't mean to oversell the dearth of content I'm talking about; there's definitely a lot to do in any world, especially when you start playing around with combat mechanics or uncovering history. But unless you're doing those things specifically settlement exploration is a samey and (for me, at least) pretty unsatisfying.

>>171314120

"To start a "Human Town" (or, alternately, an Elven Forest Retreat, Goblin Tower or Kobold Cave) one need only add the tag [SITE_CONTROLLABLE] to the entity_default.txt file in the /raw/objects folder, under whichever race you wish to play. You should only do this after having already generated a world, otherwise you may encounter bugs. It's also advisable to only have one race playable at a time by removing the [SITE_CONTROLLABLE] tag from all but the race you wish to play, for similar reasons. Gameplay adapts remarkably well, as if Toady intended us to do this, although there are a few bugs mostly relating to traders from certain races not arriving at your fort. The Elves can carry with them many different pets upon embarking, and the races will start with the appropriate food and plants (for example, humans have prickle berries instead of plump helmets by default)."

From the wiki, my good sir.

Dig a drain for the pond, channelling the last tile from above on the bank, you can try to make something big enough to save the filthy stagnant water too if you're desperate.

It's a bit tricky to judge the size you want, so count the tiles out, go one or two extra and make sure the water always has a z-level drop to persuade it to go where you want.

That's the fortress that got me going towards these designs, I'm always trying to limit my dwarf's walking space for the ol' FPS and Minemassive wasn't really very good for that.

It's also a bit of a mess really, I'm still trying to get modular industry worked out in my head, so I don't build workshops so much as paper or cloth making facilities, with attendant stockpiles and so on. Still trying to work out the right balance between using job manager and DFHack in healthy conjunction, job manager seems to get choked up when I try to use it how I want.

>>171372778
We're all gonna make it Anon.

Work out what shapes you really NEED in the fortress, and see if you can fit them together nicely, and if not squish the bastards and see how much space you really needed. These days I like trying to find extra space to waste, because the eye likes dark spots, and I think it makes my tiny, single floor 3x3 embarks, look a little more relaxed to have unrevealed tiles around the place.

But always use squares, they're dorfy. Turn them diagonal if you're feeling a bit fancy.

>>171372820

It's not really a title, I must confess I googled it too just to check... I'm just known for my fortresses, I just rather like laying them out in a distinctive manner for the map extractions.

I've posted most of my best layers at this point, still working on this nice airgap design at the moment. The shaft in >>171363495 is designed to go right through each cavern layer, so you'll get a safe tame section of the upper layers of the caves while giving beasties access to places that aren't your fortress via a ramp up the outside of the hole.

The last embark I went to was rather deep in terms of caverns, so when my militia captain dodged off the top and down the unfinished shaft there wasn't much for the medical staff to do, because I don't let them do cleaning for hygiene purposes.

"Tileset" as a colloquialism for "graphical tileset" isn't established among the community. You are one of very few people who use it.

The use of colloquialisms outside of your own social circle or family is also generally advised against, since it will be a likely cause of misunderstandings.

Basically, you're just using erroneous and misleading terms to describe things that the community already has a working terminology for. Don't try to sell it as "colloquialisms".

Often true, but also ANSI-like tilesets are more alike than graphics packs, so they're easier for you specifically to read in general.

There are still times when it doesn't really matter what the symbols are because it's the colours giving you trouble.

Im not talking about making the game necesarilly easier, it was closer to the opposite actually
I was actually thinking about the actual farming system as an example

Fantasy worlds, if well done, are coherent
This doesnt mean there cant be a overpowered demon who will actually rule the world because he cant be defeteated, it means that he will exist for thousands of years in world gen. and not get smacked to the ground by a stray snail-man
Having a broken game is really uninmersive, and it has nothing to do with the difficulty or the fantasy/realism of the game, is about making the game feel real, what Toady wants

using your own example, real life is balanced as fuck, the problem is that certain people make other people bad stuff (in a very simplistic view).
This means war, slavery, countries having fewer oportunities than the other, etc.
But this world is perfectly tied to complex rules about everything
Phisics, economy, sociology, all extremely complex yet coherent systems of variables working in its own way. Real life couldnt be more balanced, we just follow a extremely complex game
That's balancing, having a world were economy is tied to the peoples' opinions and desires, a place were strong stuff remains strong, and a long etc.

>>171390729
>I was actually thinking about the actual farming system as an example
For farming, the major problem isn't that it's "unbalanced", but rather that it's absurdly unrealistic. If it was made more realistic, for example by taking nutrients in the soil into account (we already have mechanics in place for fallowing and fertilising, bu they don't do very much), or actually requiring periodic irrigation, then the game would also become more challenging, and thus more enjoyable.

I also suspect that your definition of "balence" differ from that of most other people. When people talk about balance, they don't talk about game features being conencted in a coherent system (they generally aren't), but rather, that all aspect of the game contribute to a perfect difficulty level. In PvP contexts, for example, balance means that all players, regardless of factors like "class" and "faction", are equal in efficiency in PvP combat. In this respect, real life certainly ISN'T balanced, since some people are born as billionaires, while others are born impoverished, or even stillborn.
>>
>>171391535
>other places
Which other places? The only ones I know of are the main forums and the subreddit, and both of those are places where inexperienced players go to tell and listen to stories (most of which never actually happened). In fact, the bay12 forums and reddit are the two main sources of misinfo about the game.

Generally, it goes like this:
>hey guys, [thing that can't happen in the game] just happened to me, what does that mean lol
>hmm, it must be [in-depth explanation of a game mechanic that doesn't even exist]
>wow, I never heard about that! we should add it to the wiki!

In any case, anyone who has ever worked with tilesets, or even installed one manually (for any roguelike), is well aware that cp437 is also a tileset, and gets confused when someone talks about ASCII as if it was contrary to a tileset.

The Toad works in mysterious ways.

By the way, is it just me, or has the "select x until all x are gone" captcha become slower lately? It takes several seconds for a new image to appear in the old one's place. The select street signs has also become more tedious. Earlier, you just had to go through one or two "pages", but lately, there has been five or more pages of street signs I had to select. Is this Hiro's fault?

Mainly other chans or boards, I've seen it in bay12 and the subreddit too though. For example, I've seen discussions about ASCII vs graphical tileset in other boards, mainly /v/, and they were calling graphical tilesets, tilesets. I've also seen this happen in other chans and in threads about roguelikes too. In /rlg/, whenever there's an ASCII vs graphical tileset, people do the same, they called graphical tilesets, tilesets.

This is the only place where I've seen a person say that ASCII uses a tileset too.

>I also suspect that your definition of "balence" differ from that of most other people
that's the thing. when you talk about normal games, you use balance in a more normal sense
>are equal in efficiency in PvP combat
That's great for a game whose main concern is hitting each-other and make it so evrerybody has a chance to win, but in DF, hitting each other is actually having a whole coherent world, because everything is conected and affects everything, so everything must be somewhat coherent too
In a fighting game, for example, you couldnt give two shits about your equipment, because it doesnt make you aby better, you'll hit equally stronger naked than clothed, and that's ok
Rpgs in the other way, are a level of detail above. You fight, but your equipment, abilities and experience, and those of the enemy, make a fight different from each other. This is still balanced, because leveling up and becoming better is still a fair mechanic to players, rewarding effort without being dumbingly hard
Now you have DF, who is pretty fucking far away from your normal rpg.
This game does not only care for your equipment/abilities/atributes, etc. at a fight (with a combat system exponentially more precise than any other, btw), it takes in consideration that for you to wield a sword, a smith with thoughts and desires must exist to have created it, and so need metals and smithery, or metal extraction/commerce, or parenting to create the smith, or a set of mechanics to make a person decide to be a smith or a gardener, etc.
When you make a game as complex as this , you need to re-evaluate your definition of ''balance''
>>

>>
>>171394050
dont get me wrong, its funny, but when the game will have more info to the player in regard of the worlds lore, the myth generator is an example of this, then we will get atacchhed to the protagonists of this world from the start, we will get interested in the kings, queens, etc. combine this with a more complexity in the actions of sentients as the game progresses, and you'll become a fan of certain figures
When that happens, meeting a powerful god that created your race in person, that personally killed and devoured with his bare hands his brothers, and that has enslaved the world, etc.
In definitive, the amazing centre of the whole lore of your world, suddenly have him have a heart atack as you enter the room he is in because some technical shit like diseases calculations in adv. mode are only made when the people are at a certain radius of the player, that thing is pretty fucking underwhelming. You're misinterpreting some old research. For one, the way item indexes are handled is only conjecture. We can only figure from inference what happens to item tables when an item is no longer on the map, but research suggested that destroyed items, whether by magma or atomsmashing or being consumed in reactions, no longer contribute to fps loss. Items removed from the map by other means, i.e. theft or sale, might still count against it, but no research has ever been able to say that conclusively.
That doesn't lead to the conclusion that pathfinding isn't impactful, or that item count is more impactful. On the contrary, if you want to see how impactful it really is try embarking on a 16x16 and enjoy nofps from the very first unpause before you've produced a single item. There's a good reason that small embarks with low popcaps and few animals has been the consistent and enduring advice for saving fps for many years. It works.

That's wrong, it's neither. Rollers are either powered or not. If yes, they set a minecart's speed to 1 of 5 presets, and no amount of extra rollers or extra power going to the rollers will make a minecart go faster than the speed set by the fastest one. Notably, a roller doesn't accelerate a minecart, it just sets its speed to a fixed value as long as it's already slower than that value. If you want one to go faster than that you need either gravity or to exploit impulse ramps.

>>171400239
It's fast enough for some applications. If you were to replace a classic ballista batter/shooting gallery with fastest rollered minecarts you can get a pretty respectable shotgun out of it. If you're using really heavy ammo or you need a lot of distance, or if you're up against hell or something like that you might want to get faster. You can add impulse ramps to a roller setup without much effort, it only needs one more tile of track per ramp than you had before. And they DO accelerate the carts, so their boost is gravy on top of the roller's speed.

It would be hell to calculate map projections for a 2d game, and the actual translation of ingame tiles into this 3d globe would be almost impossible.

It's a 2x4 and it slowed down quite a bit when the pumps and pistons were used, but I did most of the digging with a 30 pop cap and made use of every trick I knew for fps whoring, cleaning dead unit and item links, deforested the entire surface, still kept pop limited to 100 I think, had the entire map painted and tuned with pathing costs and burrows and such.

The worst part was when I dropped the onacloV because it goes from being a big block suspended over a cistern... to a big block of magma that remembers it should be falling down.

Some of the tips use info which has been found to be a little or a lot incorrect, like kinesthetic sense being "sorta important" was wrong, after the stuff testanon did and my own tests it looks like kinesthetic isn't QUITE as critical as str/agi/end but it's pretty close, and intuition/focus seems detrimental for pure combat, though it has noncombat uses.

Wins with higher attribute vs 1000 base attribute opponents, no gear/etc:
str: 29 40 25 35 38
agi: 46 42 56 48 45
tou: 59 53 38 51 48
end: 53 43 44 45 46
foc: 55
wil: 52
int: 59
spa: 47
kin: 44

Str > End = Kin > Agi = Spa > Tou = Wil > Foc > Int was roughly what I got I think, not sure if I cleaned out the various testing scratchtext files I was using but I can't remember where they were if not.

You can totally change the keybindings and I really recommend several changes, since using numpad is usually preferred you'll want to look into remapping some of the keys over there for things you do a lot, I switched the enter there to an esc, numpad 5 to an enter/confirm attack button, and the left hand keys would be annoying if I was hitting l and k and i and o and shit all the time so I moved stuff over to the qwert/asdfg/zxcvb keys with various ctrl/alt/shift combos to fix them all in as needed but it's a weird ass setup at first.

Don't use ballistas, or if you do put them down at the bottom. They aren't especially effective and the crossfire will probably be as dangerous to your dwarves than to the enemy. Otherwise yeah that's pretty decent.

>>171422373
Also be sure to smooth the bottom of the pit as well as filling it with spikes. smoothed natural stone walls can't be climbed but rough-hewn stone and constructed walls can. Last thing you need is zombies climbing out of the pit and into the marksdwarves' nests or the wrong side of the bridge.

The truth is that dwarves can climb during combat, but not outside of it, to prevent pathfinding lag. So when dorfs get spooked by some critter, they seek cover in the trees, and then they can't get back down because the critter went away and the combat ended.

That, or they simply become bugged while standing on their stepladders while collecting fruits.
>>
>>171432234
Oh really? I actually thought they could climb up but no down.

Well now that I think about it your explanation makes much more sense.
>>
>>171431670
Oh fuck I think I just figured out what is happening with them being stranded.

______ <- dorf climbs up here
[]
[]_______ <- later wants to be here
Path here^ involves
^Pathing back there first to climb down
So they sit there wishing they could just go over and down one.

What happens if you build an up/down stair under them I wonder, or if you try setting the path costs back along the tree to the trunk lower?
>>
>>171432234
they can climb out of combat sometimes.

/dfg/ I'm only on my second for so please excuse my ignorance.

Does this game ever hit a plateau? Right now I'm juggling these different mechanics to keep my dwarves alive. I don't mind that so much, but as a fort progresses I'd rather get it to where the necessities are largely automated and I'm instead juggling stuff like training and equipping a military, messing with lava, etc. Is that something I can look forward to once I figure out how to be self-sustaining?
>>
>>171432234
Over the past year I've documented for /dfg/'s entertainment numerous incidents of dwarves climbing in situations that didn't involve combat at all. The many I've posted only covered a fraction of the climbs I've experienced over the course of digging my fort to its current state.
>>
>>171441257
set up profiles at workshops and assign a dwarf as the manager.
>>
>>171441257

Yeah. The manager's standing order system will let you automate pretty much anything as long as you have tolerance for cancellation spam. Otherwise there's not really much you can do.
>>
>>171441257
Once you learn how to use the manager well you can arrange your fort such that it can sustain itself with almost no intervention on your part. That will mostly amount to setting standing production orders for booze and clothes. Optionally prepared meals as well. Your farms can manage themselves without even that much after you set them up initially.
>>
>>171441672

Holy fuck the cancellation spam tho. I can't tell if I'm doing it wrong or if that's just how it is, but I have to set my jobs to check as infrequently as possible so I don't get drowned under a constant stream of "Urist McFarmer cancels Mill Plant: Needs unrotten millable plant." It hides messages that're actually important like "interrupted by troll."
>>
>>171441968
putting a condition on resources helps, though not that well when multiple jobs use the same resource unfortunately.
>>
>>171442397

I do. It checks that there's at least 1 bag and at least 10 cave wheat. It still fires and just immediately cancels instead of not being issued at all like it's supposed(?) to.
>>
>>171441968
Yeah, it takes some tuning and playing with conditions. You might find that your production can't keep up with your manager in some cases and that it's less of headache to just queue the jobs up manually every once in a while.

Well, what kind of embark do you have? Any cool natural formations or deep chasms?

You could always do a giant ice tower with a "dungeon" inside it, full of steel traps and horrifying beasts. No military, just rely on your tower of doom. Maybe link an aboveground bridge from the top of your tower to a secondary formation, either housing your fort or being the passageway to it, and is only accessible via the ice dungeon.

>>
>>171470903
All I want are ambushers back and sieges to come regularly. I'm happy that goblins can climb now. I'd be happy if building destroyers could destroy bridges, and if cage traps were fixed so things could break out. I'd be happy if weapon traps weren't so ungodly overpowered.

But all I want is to get hit every spring/summer/or fall with ambushers and every winter with sieges. I do not enjoy Dwarf Fortress because of its plethora of randomly generated text. That is a nice bonus. I enjoy it because it is a video game. It's not too much to ask for Toady to lower his sights and focus on making the game more game like again instead of having every fortress die of boredom.
>>
>>171471080
>It's not too much to ask for Toady to lower his sights and focus on making the game more game like
it kinda is too much to ask, since it completely contradicts his own vision.

it's also obvious by now that you're the guy who complained even before the tavern release that all we'd get would be "text generators"
>>
>>171471282
>his own vision
Half of it is from bugs anon. The other half is from lack of implementation.

I'm not and it's sad how if you ever point out a flaw in the game in this thread you're dismissed as a troll. If I wanted to read Reddit tier discussion I would go there directly.
>>
>>171471080
Ambushers are still a thing, and sieges will come regularly but you can't embark on an island completely across the world from said siegers, there were a lot of bugs in 40.24 which really fucked with siege frequency unless you literally embarked in the middle of a dozen towers and sandwiched between two dark fortresses while being at war with one or both.

Now that ain't the case, and really if you want more violence, or want it more gamelike, [NATURAL_SKILL:DISCIPLINE:8] or even higher on goblins (and various other races) will end up with you wondering if perhaps you should lower the siege size caps some.

Toady wants to make a fantasy world generator which produces interesting stories, you want a game, one of those is why I personally got hooked on df, and one of them sounds like a recipe for disappointment.

>>171468984
The specific addition of rescue/fucking shit up missions is fantastic news because it opens up a whole fuckload of crazy shit.
>>
>>171471463
I never called you a troll.

however, you said that you wanted forced 100% guaranteed sieges every year. in reality, this would mean completely dismantling the world activation that Toady spent over two years working on.

it would make the world static again. and THAT is not in accordance with Toady's vision.
>>
>>171471625
In any given world there are tens of thousands of goblins.

Having one always in route to your fort would be a trivial change. It isn't something we can mod however.

Furthermore, it takes less than a month to cross a medium world. The truth is it isn't world activation that is the problem. It's that goblins just don't give a shit about you and it hurts gameplay. This is compounded by multiple bugs that get them stuck on things but don't uncheck your forts flag so you're never assaulted by a new raiding band or siege that is not stuck.

>>171471541
The only ambushers I have seen in the last THREE YEARS have come from elves or humans. Never goblins. Compare that to it being a common occurrence for every fortress pre-activation.

How will changing the base discipline help with army movement and such? I'm interested in this discussion.
>>
>>171471831
the thing is, just throwing every single goblin in the world at your fort wouldn't make sense.

why would a gobbo civ siege you if they didn't have any beef with your civ in the first place? ther needs to be an actual war between to civs before there can be sieges. otherwise, the sieges would just be empty backdrops.

why would a gobbo civ on the opposite end of the world, which is already waging war on its neighbours, waste military power on sending squads to some random remote fortress that they don't have any strategic interest in conquering in the first place?

also, the NOSIEGES thing has mostly been a meme lately. I have had plenty of sieges in all of my recent forts. they usually begin just a few months after I reach the magical 80 dorf treshold.
>>
>>171471831
Natural skill discipline makes the world go crazy apparently.

Much more bandits, much larger armies, hordes of weapon lords, world-gen battles involving thousands of combatants, and a ruthless culling of the weaker civs so the survivors wind up with literally thousands of soldiers to throw around at nearby targets.
>>
>>171472087
You're cooking the scenario to make it seem more likely.

I can embark adjacent to a pit or tower and until I hit that 80 dwarf level not get sieged because of bad design, once I get that magic number only get sieges occasionally and frequently stopped by bugs, and generally just have a braindead time with every fort feeling like the last.

NOSIEGES isn't a recent meme. It's a recurring thing where people who have played and supported this game for a decade come back and say "Wait why the fuck isn't this fixed yet?". Now we have people who have grown up with DF post brutality and don't understand the meaning of losing is fun anymore.

It's not hard to have a successful fort when you aren't pushed by danger.

>>171472241
Damn that sounds fun just to sim and play around with even if that seems like it'd cause some serious issues with stability and having ghost worlds.
>>
What's the least impactful way of genning all three cavern layers but not having to pay for it in lag?
>>
FPS death will always be the most important problem DF has to face. The reason no one experiences any sieges anymore is because most people tank to .5 frames before they meet the requirements for them. Guess we'll see that changed in Slaves to Armok III.
>>
>>171469847
I started following the instructions and was doing great, made it to the bottom level of the aquifier.
Then... the game crashed, second time this happened so far.

Is the current version of the game really that unstable?
>>
>>171472461
>NOSIEGES isn't a recent meme
It's a 0.40 phenomenom.

As of 0.42, the bug that prevented the sieges is fixed. They are much more frequent now, but they still require that the enemy actually sends a siegeing force.

"Losing is Fun" is irrelevant. There are countless shitty tower defense games that claim to be "le hardest games EVAARRR". DF doesn't need to be another one of them.
>>
>>171472683
I haven't had a game crash in a very long time.
>>
>>171472695

Also you may want to get off whatever high horse you just rode up your ass if you think !!FUN!! isn't an intrinsic part of DF and inseparable.
>>
>>171472772
It only applies to new players who don't know what they're doing and fuck up every single thing. Once you know how to farm, make a wall gate, and realize a full squad of legendary dwarves is enough to take care of any siege all that's left is your imagination.

have you ever listened to the talks/interviews toady gives? his vision for the game isn't some kind of mystery.

he has said it again and again for the last few years: what he's developing is a fantasy world simulator. its primary purpose is to create an interesting fantasy world with its own lore. the three game modes (adv, fort and legends) are simply "windows" through which we can explore the world.

this isn't my personal opinion, but rather what Toady has said himself plenty of times.

lastly, the biggest difference between the two of us is that you still live in the delusion that Toady is making the game for you, and gives a fuck about what you think. on the contrary, experience has shown that Toady is always running his own race, and developing the game in directions which he himself thinks seem cool.

your opinions don't matter, and neither do mine. however, I'm pretty thrilled with the direction that the development has taken, so I'm all in for the ride.

>>
I always get sucked into these arguments about what DF ought to be vs what it's becoming. I don't have the energy for it today and don't care to dig into every post that I disagree with to argue them point by point. I'll just leave my opinion on the doorstep and get back to business.

I understand the feelings of those who want DF to be an ultraviolent war game. That was never its goal, but that's effectively what it was for years, and a lot of people who play now were brought to the table for that. But it's growing up, and it will never again be JUST the edgy goblin slaughter simulator that it was in its youth. That's fine for people who have played consistently for many years; we've played that game and frankly it gets boring. Sieges have always been easy to defeat once you learn the game, a five minute minigame before the seasons-long body part hauling main event. They aren't a real source of difficulty. Someday that might change. Someday we might get that horror slider Toady talked about, and people who want to romanticize 34.11 or 23a as superhard procedural death engines can play the game that they think DF should try to be. Until then you're just shouting at the wind, the same as dozens of anons before you, and those of here to play the game DF actually is, and the game Toady is promising us, are going to read your complaints and roll our eyes. It's not because you're wrong about what DF is, it's because it's not a problem.
I don't mean this dismissively, I'm being earnest based on your airing of grievances. I think you want to play another game.

Urist Aquifier noob here, So i managed to dig past the aquifier and everything was great.
Then this happened.
As i was digging beneath the aquifier everything flooded. Am i dealing with a multilayer aquifier? What the hell do i do now? My only way down is now flooded. Do i need to make multiple level pumpstacks to empty this out?
>>
>>171480224
What stone types are you digging in? You could dug into a stone cluster within a layer stone that supports aquifers. The cluster itself wouldn't have an aquifer, but as soon as you dug outside of it the layer stone would start dropping water on you. Could also be that your initial stone layer doesn't support aquifer but the one beneath it does. It's rare, but as long as you're still in sedimentary stone it can happen.
>>
>>171480678
It's Diorite, the levels directly beneath where i breached the aquifier were fine for the first 2 Z-levels i dug out. But when i moved outside my
4x4 square water started pouring out. I only managed to make one wall in time before it flooded.

Im now in the process of making a pumpstack for the first time.

The problem is that those windows in their current state are obviously flawed, and the only people who defend them seem to be conveniently ignore all their criticism and point to the fact that Toady is creating his own artistic vision. Improving Fortress mode so that it makes sense and is actually fun is not mutually exclusive with creating a fantasy world simulator, in fact it's arguably in Toady's interest to do so.

It's not like Toady is immune to criticism just because he's doing his thing. You can still complain, and you can still be justified in your complaints. They probably won't matter in the long run, but that doesn't mean you can't have them, and disregarding legitimate complaints because "TOADY IS ONE MAN PURSUING HIS ARTISTIC VISION" is frankly stupid and is genuinely the kind of thing I would expect from literal braindead redditors, not upstanding participants in this once great general.
>>
>>171484508
if I remember correctly, your particular complaint was that sieges didn't appear every winter.

I answered this complaint. it simply doesn't make sense for the enemy to show up at regular intervals, always right on schedule. who the fuck would fight a war like that in real life? how would that interact with the other world mechanics.

instead of actually answering that argument, you choose to obsess over semantics, avoiding the matter at hand.

this guy has killed my two followers and all I can do is dodge his charges and stab him with an iron spear. is this pointless or will he go down eventually?
>>
>>171497681
An iron spear will do it eventually, but something with a larger contact area would be better. Concentrate your attacks on the head or neck, you'll cleave it asunder eventually. There's a definite risk that you'll overexert yourself before you succeed, which is certain to be fatal.

What did the embark menu say about the area you settled in? Basically, there are three levels of savagery: benign, neutral and savage. The embark screen will say something like "Wilderness" if it's moderately savage, and this is where you'd see regular animals. In an "Untamed Wilds" you'd find giant animals and more dangerous beasts. The different grades of evil (Sinister, Haunted, Terrifying) are based on savagery as well. Turning up the savagery in a world will result in more wilds but civilizations can only build in calm areas in worldgen, goblins excepted I think. But the main key is where you embark

>>
>We were thinking of having, say you have a more standard world with a regular old afterlife, and you were playing adventure mode, and then when you died it doesn't just say quit and start again. You're actually sitting in the Elysian fields all of a sudden, and you can move around, and you're like, what just happened?

>'Ohhh, damnit.' It wouldn't be a long game, because it would probably be boring, but you could chat with some godlike figures and decide if you wanted to go into the pool and reincarnate or go do something, or if you just want to retire and hang out and be dead. And when your other characters die they can talk with you about how you both died stupidly.

>>171515207
The game aspects of the fortress mode were always intended to be a vague sort of high scores list to come and check with an adventurer.

He had the gamey aspects in there and people started playing it more so he started paying more attention to fort mode and seeing what all was going on, moving it towards the "this is a place you make where stuff happens" direction while trying to keep the "and later when it falls you can come check out what happened with an adventurer and/or go see other stuff going on" goal.

Or... maybe.... if you're doing massive digging projects. I've got 36 legendary miners. They didn't become legendary sitting on their asses with nothing to do. They all still have work to do. All the time. The very first room I dug in my fort was 24z deep. The central open space in >>171511184 is 67z deep, and gets bigger at the bottom. I've got a lot happening underground, too.
So, 20 miners might be more than enough for what you're doing. ~40 miners is what I have now, and they still have a whole lot to do, which would take twice as long if I only had 20 miners.

To extend that a little bit, I think that's why I find the "he should make fort mode more gamey" stuff so strange.

When I was just playing fort mode I never really cared what was going on outside the embark, never really knew shit about it besides a vague "there's some neighbors of these types that like/trade with/hate/attack me" sense.

Then I grabbed one of my dorfs and headed off-site and started looking around, exploring, it was always neat hearing about stuff from my fort but I soon realized I had put it in a bad spot because it was just one of many sites, and it was way over across the map from all sorts of crazy shit taking place elsewhere.

Later I learned how to avoid that, how to pick spots where my fort was an active part of the world, where shit happened whether I was there or not, and am currently annoyed that adventurer camps require dfhackery to get shit happening at them like it should. Though Toady said he'd look at having adventurer entities keep a link to their parent civ which would fix all of the weirdness with sites you claim and allow shit like setting up a franchises of taverns and libraries and coming back to see that they've been busy.
