Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Reading the manual and watching videos

and 800 hours of single player. have fun :^)
>>
>>171030162
Don't waste much time in sp. Learn the controls, the basics and test some nations there, then go play mp. You can even host a game as a newb because it's really not hard. Just make sure score graphs are off
>>
>>171030162
do this >>171032131

then do a quick read of the manual, start trying out expansion phase(upto first 15 turns) of some nations you like; then either make a multiplayer game or wait in the thread for someone to create it.

before joining a multiplayer game ask what is a good pretender design for the nation you've chosen. you can always learn more abou the nation day by day, but pretender creation will stick to you until the end of the game
>>
>>171030162
Make a lot of friends in communities. You'll learn a lot from fighting them then asking them ho they beat you. I've probably doubled my steam friends by adding everyone I played with on steam.

Doing a bad job of explaining this. Basically:

Pantheon Wars
Every pantheon on a disciple team so it's a thematic disciple game. Maybe give each Pantheon an underwater nation. It would be horribly imbalanced, but probably a lot of fun
>>
>>171046717
so basically a disciples game with all three ages of a nation on teams?
>>171029142
that's fine, so long as Yomi doesn't expand into it as well.
>>
>>171046898
That sounds pretty cool too actually. Only nations that have survived all 3 ages get to duke it out? My money would be on Pan

But no I was referring to the map Archea where every EA nation has a designated starting capital and are grouped by their pantheon. So essentially Nordic nations vs. EAstern nations vs. Greco Roman nations vs. South American vs. etc.
>>
>>171047986
>But no I was referring to the map Archea where every EA nation has a designated starting capital and are grouped by their pantheon. So essentially Nordic nations vs. EAstern nations vs. Greco Roman nations vs. South American vs. etc.
Let's figure out how we'd divide the nations into teams
>>
>>171048235
Hmm I think it would be good to start with team sizes, on paper 2 per team sounds like a good number.
>Kailasa & Lanka
>Helheim & Vanheim
>Bats & Aztecs
>Fomoria & TNN

Seem fairly obvious but there are others that make it hard to pair
>>
>>171047986
All Tomorrows was actually suggested as a 10 teams of 3 on Archaea - but teams were going to be drafted.

Yes this did mean people would be seperated. For actually pre-drafting teams you'd need to be *very* careful to keep scales/bless desire etc in mind.

I'll give a rough draft in an hour or so though, if people are interested.
>>
>>171052280
>Helheim and Vanheim

This is untenable, due to Niefel's location. IMO teams of 3 work just as well, you'd simply have Niefel/Van/Hel.

Lanka/TC/Yomi are close enough (Ports!) to work too, though Kailasa may fit better in the long run. I can verify the Lanka/TC/Yomi is a good team comp to have though.
>>
>>171052584
RIP Kailasa
>>
>>171052584
>>171053078
I was actually thinking that maybe it should be TC/Lanka/Kailasa and have Yomi/Agartha/?? as a cave team
>>
>>171053078
Helheim/Niefelheim/Vanheim is an obvious first

This means that unless we want to make multiple UW nations on the same team (which I think is boring) R'lyeh needs to either be linked to Agartha, Yomi, or the Fomoria/TNN set up. While Agartha might be more flavorful in some sense, a team of R'lyeh/TNN/Fomoria is more reasonable given the map and scale/bless consideration.

Teams of Ulm/Marverni/Sauro and Pan/Arco/Ermor can round up the rest of Europe, though dividing the teams up as Ulm/Marverni/Ermor and Pan/Arco/Sauro is likely better for not condemning people to an instant war with the Heims (the latter set up gives options).

I'm much less sure about Asia in general, though the last member of the Mictlan/Xibalba team would reasonably either be Oceania or Atlantis.
>>
>>171055071
Yomi/Agartha/R'lyeh might work well if the squids had a cave entrance added to their capital - say to 10 (while also making that into a water province)

Doing so does force a team of TC/Caelum/Kailasa though. TC is honestly the problem child of the bunch, since what they want from a bless ideally no one else around them is interested in.

Break siege. If the enemy is good, they'll screw you over for sitting inside.

Unless you're running headfirst into EQ or RoS, or have reinforcements on the way.
>>
You can also take advantage of the fact that you have two chances to fight, and break siege with a dude to burn gems and then potentially have the enemy army not have all of its spells when it storms

Like all things in dominions it depends. As
>>171072829
>>171078968
said you should probably break if you have a chance of winning, but honestly sometimes that isn't always the best case.

A personal favorite of mine is if you're a fire heavy nation with F2 lab rats [spolier]Mari[/spoiler] you can stay behind your walls and force your enemy to go through the narrow gate and deal with fire elementals.

Also sometimes by just stalling your enemy by having the fort stuffed your army plays its role. Just remember don't break if you can't win.

Read the manual. Join a blitz after playing for a few (dozen) hours in SP. Ask for advice. Also, pick a few nations and stick to them when you're starting out. Try and learn them fairly well first before branching out. I'd suggest any of the primarily human nations.

Oh, and if you're not recruiting mages as often as you can, you're doing it wrong.

erf snek
>>
>>171087382

Early, anything with an N9Ex, because Burning Ones are ridiculous.

Mid and Late, expander or imprisoned scales, maybe with a couple variety minors to break you into less burny paths.
>>
>>171087545
Erf snek is good, that's a given. I think there was a blitz where everyone was a variation of snakes.
>>
>>171087556
Danke. I actually haven't spent much time with early age, how ridiculous are we talking about?
>>
>>171086984
>Oh, and if you're not recruiting mages as often as you can, you're doing it wrong.
Generally good advice, but it's important to remember that it's not always true.

Missing out on mage recruitment for a better expansion is worth it early on.

Later on, most nations need a decent mix of troops and mages. If your net income isn't high enough to max out mage production and still get a decent number of troops, you'll need to put at least some gold on things that aren't mages.
>>
>>171087761

They're Prot 18 base with Berserker 3, four attacks per square with built in Fire Shield. That means they can waltz through pretty much any EA indie without being blessed. With N9Ex, they're one of the very few sacreds that can put up a decent fight against their gold cost in N9E9 Niefel Giants.
>>
>>171088105
Sadly taking such a bless means that unless you end the game by early year 3, you pretty much garunteed lose.

EA Abysia requires a magic diversity pretender to work well into late, generally speaking a soul contract build.
>>
>>171089206

Are you dumb? NE are both diversity for EA Abysia since you only get E1. N opens up DA later on.

B that Abysia natively has opens up DS and later on NAE too up to a high level.

With some site searching on your mobile pretender you can get the diversity you need.
>>
>>171089206

Oh yeah. I'd never say "GO TRIBLESS!" or anything, but a single major on an imprisoned isn't going to break the bank.

tldr version: Bats are on their deathbed, Vanheim is about to have game winning 6 thrones.

Dear nations of the world, this is a public service announcement.

I just got elfed by Vanheim this turn, which puts me on the wrong side of a 1v3. I lost 16 provinces this turn, 10 of them to Vanheim. I lost 2/3 of my army the turn before this. 2 of the nations I am fighting were bigger and stronger then me even before this started. I don't think I have any reasonable plan of defence which will work at this point.

I know, I know, now you are thinking: that is great! REMOVE BATS!

However, in 2-3 turns when the bat house of cards folds on itself, Vanheim will be in control of a GAME WINNING 6 thrones.

Thus if you plan on seeing another day without bowing to Nick as the supreme god (again) this is the last chance to act.

Your friendly neighbourhood bats
>>

>>
>>171095709
t. Bats
>>
>>171095709
Lol, you act like I'm getting all 4 of the thrones you own. I'll be lucky to get one.

Throne of knowledge is something Arco wants, and Therados said they're attacking soon (tm).
Throne of Fire I'll ideally take, but it is close to Oceania so might not happen.
Throne of Gaia Ur plans to grab - and they're much closer to it than I am. With them also seiging Agartha's throne that puts them as close to 6 thrones as me.
If you think I'm ever getting even sort of close to the throne of water in friggin mid Africa you need to share what you're smoking.
>>
>>171097340

I am very salty about this situation:

you snowball out of control unopposed, yet I am somehow painted as the world's main villain and dog piled, despite being like #5-6 in size/income.

yeye I know... fuck bats.
>>
And yeah... that throne in the middle of Africa? You need 2 turns to get there.

Not me, pretty sure I haven't posted in this thread at all yet.

Scouts in summod are easy to get, just take an UW province or recruit them as units in your cap. Unless you're Marverni. In which case, you can't, and I doubt anyone will bother fixing it anytime soon.

Also, Sauro - I'm not sure if that message was meant for me, you seem to mention some provinces that I don't even border. Sorry about the bump though.

So whats the meta behind trash scales? Is the general idea that if you capture a second capitol early enough it will sufficiently compensate for generally bad scales? How practical is this? Especially if all you can afford is sacreds, you will be hemmoraging money for the upkeep towards the chaff to have the strength to finally storm the cap, unless you can mass ogres or something to that effect. I imagine there would be an awkward stage in a rush strategy where you have destroyed your victims army, but are stuck with a small army, overexpanded front, and only have half of a second capitol under your control.
>>
>>171125115
If you are Mictlan, you can choose when and where to spread your dom, so you can safely run a tribless with somewhat garbage scales, and blood-sac selectively to not get killed.

Most other trash-scales build either have some way of getting units outside of gold, like freespawn, and they often also have popkill that forces them to switch off of a gold economy.
>>
>>171125115
Popkill/freespawn/SKELETONS nations aren't blowing any gold on units, they can take trash scales

Nations that need a big bless sometime have to cut scales to afford it
>>
>>171125378
Yeah freespawn/popkill nations are a bit more intuitive in this regard. Blood sac nations can also yes comfortably run around with sub6 dom.

I was thinking in terms of Niefelhiem. Super expensive sacreds who really like E9N9, but it hurts the scales. The cost of the sacreds offsets their earlygame advantage, so hurting longterm income doesn't play to an immediate weakness for them. However the problem appears where you are left with a small army and no immediate means to storm capitols, even with giants strength, the "armies" are really small and unique.

So maybe you get Hurlers, but now you have this blob of suboptimal units eating up your upkeep. This upkeep, using up resources, and the prinincpal cost of them + your scales, I don't imagine this is worth the extra cap you eventually get.

It seems I won the game. I guess I should write something.

The game was actually pretty funny. Gath was running a tribless *and* an awake expander. Xib had three blesses as well. R'lyeh went full scales. 4 nations were AI on turn 12 already.

I expanded with Garms, it was alright. Ate Jomon, who decided to attack Gath for some reason, and I accidentally killed his awake dragon. He went AI soon after. I was bordering Ulm as well and obviously wanted to attack them ASAP, but the player went AI too (because of health issues, IIRC). That's how I ended up with 3 capitals on turn 20 or so.

Man and Xib fought each other pretty much for the entire game. R'lyeh joined the fun near the end, but was mostly losing a couple hundred chaff each turn to Man's crossbows. Gath killed Abysia in year1 and made a move against AI Ragha (failed to expand, was running an E9 cold memebuild). They tried to rush thrones but were unable to deal with my mage support skeletons.
>>
>>171126137
Yeah, so basically you put some stuff on their cap that they can't kill, then you take their other provinces. Then you're twice the usual size. You breach eventually or not
>>
>>171126137

It depends. Niefel is kinda a special case, because that bless allows them a very strong early game, and ALSO a fairly strong lategame built on Gygja running on shrouded Skratti turbocommunions. It also works well with their summoned sacreds, makes Shrouds serious business, and is generally good stuff.

Niefel is very much a thug nation.
>>
>>171126589
ah so you just have to roll with having to slow down anyways.

So in terms of being a 3rd party neighbour to Niefel, does this mean they are particularly vulnerable during this siege stage? They have their army split flagging provinces and sitting on the 2nd cap, if you could shut down niefels cap in time knowing they are sieging someone else, man this third party could end up with 3 capitols.
>>
>>171126748
>Niefel is kinda a special case, because that bless allows them a very strong early game
Not seeing it, just slightly beyond expansion phase. You have so few troops on the field that you aren't able to cover much of an area and you need to chose earlygame between infrastructure, mages and more giants.
Their mid and lagegame is smooth again though.
>>
>>171126748
Yeah that sounds like a lot of fun. You mention early game and lategame, does this mean they are most vulnerable midgame?

For early game sieges you wouldn't suggest hurlers?

Midgame they're still pretty solid, but other nations will have answers to thugging coming online. And your sacreds are basically thugs, in that one Niefel Giant and a Jarl can kill arbitrary amounts of PD. You can bring the Gygja turbocommunions on by midgame as well, but you're likely to have

>>171127708

It's worth noting that Jotun Hurlers are Str20 with +5 siege bonus. This gives them 9 siege power for 30 gold, which means they're about three times more cost efficient than human troops for sieging stuff. The problem is that they're absolutely fucking useless for anything else, to the point where they'll die to their weight in Indie Light Infantry.
>>
>>171127734
Makes sense considering in dominions archers who would get amputated are unlikely in the first place, and wouldnt be likely to survive long enough to investigate the issue. Its way more likely to see squads of melee units have amputees, and the archers all die or rout and nothing as much in between. Not exactly a game breaking bug, but a bit USELESS
>>
>>171127976

Whups. Got distracted and posted before I was finishing writing the first bit there.

You can bring the Gygja turbocommunions on by midgame as well, but you're likely to have fewer high level spells than most of your opponents, which makes it less useful until you're catching up in research.
>>
>>171128102
I think it has to do with them having a melee attack as well. Dudes with a shield and a crossbow for example wouldnt be able to work if the ranged weapon took arms.

Here's my god. He's not a tree. Which means he can move (very important) and has air magic (also vital in the age of crossbows). Scales suffered a bit, but with Seithkonas being super cheap, Growth isn't needed as much as early gold from Order to spam Garmhirdings.

Garms are really bad, by the way, and somehow still manage to be the best recruitables Utgard gets. I recruited some Hurlers to crack Jomon's and Ulm's capital forts and suicided most of them storming the latter. But generally, Utgard's troops are crap.

Mages are great though. Seithkonas are among the best mages in game, IMHO, with 85g getting you 3 sorcery paths and 11 research. Skrattis in LA are as good as ever for thugging and Utgard is even better at spamming skeletons in turbocomms than Niefel and Jotun. Nornas are useful for bigger spells like Darkness and Rigor Mortis; moving them around before you get const6 is super slow though.

Anyway, GG and thanks to everyone who kept on playing until the end.

>>171127953
>>171127658
Huh. I'm certain I saw one get fatigued to death once.
>>
>>171127953
Encumbrance 0 is symbolic meaning yes, that you can only gain fatigue through spellcasting. This game is neat in that some numbers are symbolic.

for example: 30 Morale means that the unit will only route when the entire army routs, 50 means the unit cannot route, 99 I think specificies the unit is berserked and is not mindless and yet will never route.

>>171127976
yeah thats the gamble you gotta make, have "efficient" siegers, or have inefficient upkeep sitting around

>>171127856
Is the gimick of this that you divine name this guy and you SC him in order to siege all by himself?

The generic siege supplement to an army can be solved from construction with a gate cleaver that doesnt require late game research.
>>
>>171127953
>>171127658

I waited for it since I supposed he was the one interested in joining back.

Since yesterday the time of the host he had not talked to me yet, I looked for him in steam and added him to ask for his email so I could change it.

But it has been 24 hours since then and he still didn't accept my invitation. I don't really want to delay the turn more, as the game suffered a lot of extensions already and the 16+ players don't deserve waiting one more day because a player can't tell me his email adress.

Undead can be fatigued by spells, and I assume also heat auras. Heat scales should do nothing to them, except maybe increase spellcasting encumbrance.

Spells which primarily cause stun damage won't target things with zero encumbrance, so don't try use Cascades against undead.

Welcome to /domg/, where most people give bad advice.

As for EA Abysia, you definitely have an advantage, but you can't just walk in everywhere. Same with EQ. It's effective at leveling the playing field but you need a specialized army to weather it and use it on an army worth the cost. About the only "safe" auto-win you'll really get is Abysia with flamestorm (or whatever the one is where it deals damage to 50% of all units on the field each turn). And even then, I've had it cast and STILL lost the battle. Granted, it was a complete phyrric victory for them in terms of mages and units lost, but it still happened. And if you run up against sacreds with a major blood bless, well, you're losing your mage and that's that.

But generally, take everything /domg/ says with a big ass heap of salt, because everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is situational. You've got tools for everything, no one thing is best.
>>
>>171176768
Fog warriors, then RoS

or

Mass flight, then EQ

Remember to check mage order pressing T just in case your stuff gets RoS'd as well before you can cast Fog Warriors.

Alternatively use them with 1 or 2 mages against an enemy army (those are called mage traps). Remember to give your EQ guy a ring of levitation and your RoS caster a good armor.

It's best against large groups of high-hp or elite troops, but it works just fine against SCs for me. Killed this thing pretty easily, and he needed two hits.

How many mages do you have casting it, and how are you using it?

>>171176768
How to EQ:
>get 2-3 mages who can cast earthquake, preferably turn 1
>find large enemy stack with lots of low-defense low-protection units (mages, basically)
>move mages into province enemy is about to attack
>cast earthquake round 1 before the enemy can put up defensive buffs
>half of the enemy army's mages are now dead, and probably your own 2-3 mages (obviously don't do this if that isn't a worthwhile trade)
You can add a bunch of chaff to try delay the enemy army long enough for your EQ casters to escape, but that generally expensive. Far better to use mages you can afford to lose.

RoS is much better, really. You only need one caster, and it's basically a 100% death rate on unarmored humans.

If it's DRN+2 then it heals from 4 to manylots.

oh rip. i've just made a complete failure of myself in the two games i've been in
>>
>>171180027
You at least learnt how not to fail in those ways again, right?

Don't worry, 3 of my first 4 games I failed horribly by doing stupid shit and I've yet to stop making stupid mistakes.
>>
>>171180027
In a 10 player game there will be 9 losers, so don't feel too bad.

The games I've learned most from have been those where I was BTFO. I both learned what not to do again, and by seeing what my enemies did I picked up some new tricks.

Immobiles can't compete in the death match.

That's a nice pretender you have there. Won the game so quickly I didn't even suspect it until it was done. If nothing else this game taught me that having the best-equipped humanoid troops doesn't really mean shit when your enemies can summon giant blood-vengeancing and regenerating monsters. I only seemed to survive this game by virtue of being in the minority of players that didn't have youtube-LP tier expansion.

Map link is dead and that map version seems to be outdated anyway. Can you change it to Peliwyr 1.3 with additional #nostart provinces? I think it's already on llama.
>>
>>171172793
Thank you so much. Why would you say that TNN has a poor lategame?
>>
Alright, I'm around. Whoever it was who was threatening to go AI, you wanna talk?
>>
>>171190338
It could be Helheim.
I haven't heard anything from him and it looks like he failed his expansion hard as fuck
>>
>>171190842
He's not near Xibalba though. Also, from what I can see he did ok on expansion near me.

10/10 game

Best nation to have literally the best turf available?
As in, the nation whose land has the best yelds assuming max scales.
>>
>>171193274
Berytos and MA ctis are the only nations with gold bonuses beyond those granted by scales.
>>
>>171193409
And Bery only has them on coastal while Ctis gets bonus for all the candles.
>>
>>171179791
It's an opposed roll

Can't believe we're on page 8 already. Don't you guys have off from work, or school due to snow?

Yes, but Bery gets a bigger bonus. (15% instead of 1% per candle, iirc)

Is it me or is Teaching Feeling going faster?

New admin, who actually wants the game to end before 2020.
>>
>>171199584
Who's the new admin
>>
>>171199630
Carlix
>>
Admins of FrogAndToad and Autism Wars, I'm out in the bush all weekend until Monday evening. Agartha and Arcoscephale respectively.
>>
>>171200490
Oh, in addition to this, I'm postponing JobbingToXibalba, DSDS2 and YIAMAG by...106 hours

Fuck's sake, I'm so sorry
>>
>>171200690
Or rather by 92, I cannot math it seems.
>>
>>171200690
>>171200816
...also I have turned Quickhost off because I won't have internet after I post this message ok thank you bye see you all on monday
>>
>>171200690
Why bother hosting if you know you're going to be postponing them? Give someone else admin and extend hosting intervals. Either set yourself AI or find a sub. Your collective hosting postponement is Lukas-tier.
>>
>>171200490
My friend, Asphodel killed the admin of Autism Wars long ago. First in game, then . . . perhaps . . .

>>
>>171201003
Well, tbf in this game we're closing in on turn 60, pulling out Tarts and Juggernauts and Army of Golds, and its still a 24h timer.

Could probably use an extension to 48h anyway desu.
>>
>>171177864
TNN here. I don't have a fucking idea what happend with that gold increase.
>>
>>171194620
I was hoping to do some diplomacy and prevent someone from going AI. But it seems he's not around.
>>
I've tried to use (advanced)crossbreeding so many times because of how fun it is but it doesn't seem that good
How can I get the most use out of it?
>>
>>171202612
Luck, like literally items that give the commander luck, and crossbreeding skill which some commanders have and gitgud :^). Why bother doing crossbreeding in the first place? I think it might be a viable strategy for bloodnations to pump out fast castle defenders otherwise I don't see other reasons.
>>
>>171200490
Would you be okay with finding a temporary sub?
>>
>>171201994
FastHelheim is almost certainly not the person that threatened to go AI. I know who the player is, and they're pretty good about playing things out
>>
can a size 5 unit be trampled by a size 6 one

can a unit shurnk down from size 6 to 5 be shrinked again?
>>
>>171207439
Yes.
I don't think so.
