Let us establish how this community and market actually exist in the first place. Piracy and fan translating, they are both mutually exclusive to each other and they are the foundations of what we consider as the “western visual novel community”.

After some years where piracy slowly started to decrease and official releases started to be a thing I can safely assume that there are three types of people now, one who will support every single game localization and buy the Visual Novels instead of pirating them, one who will pirate everything and anything, or one that will mix between these two because either there is no other access to the game in Japanese to apply the English patch (in other words, you can’t buy the game legally because the Japanese market is already a very difficult place to access with Western VPN’s, mostly because Japanese publishers block them to not let people outside Japan buy these games online, which is usually the only way to get them in the first place) or the individual simply doesn’t support some releases or companies that release VN’s in particular (I’ll set people that want to buy legally a game with a fan-translated patch but can’t do it, so they have to pirate the VN even if they don’t want to as an example).

This last example leads to another concerning issue, the relationship between translation groups and the community itself. It’s partly human nature; when a group establishes itself and releases a patch (no matter whether it’s full or partial) we automatically create what is called a “power level” between these two types of people, the users that translate and work on translating games in one way or another (editing, QC’ing, etc…) and the users that simply play the releases made by the first ones.

And, well, it just depends on how much Sekai spent on the license. 2000 sales for a game is actually fine in this genre, but that's only if you didn't overpay on licensing and royalties, which Sekai is known to do.

So we just don't know. We can only determine a "bomb" based on how much of an investment the company provided. So this is really mostly just speculation. In some cases, there are clear "bombs", like, say, Karakara; which SP invested quite a bit into, and they expected Nekopara sales figures. But did it sell poorly overall? Well, it doesn't look like it. Still probably a bomb since they hired a writer, an artist, and a few pretty expensive VAs, not to mention all the technical and TL work.

Pretty sure some time ago Good Haro came out and said it can get pretty close even with the lower numbers, though it can wobble around a bit. It should still be only taken as guide post, but since there isn't any other way to check sales it is the best we have.

Pygmalion should've been a kinetic novel. Only one choice is already enough to scare away most people who like choices. And having to read 2 bad ends and an ending that they were too lazy to finish before being able to resume the story is just annoying. It doesn't help that Yang's and Riko's endings had events that really should've been part of the main story, not as bad ends/non ends. The bad ends also retreaded a certain sequence with slight variations, which just started to feel repetitive by the third time I read it.

Italicizing english words does not convey that those words are spoken in a foreign language, but it does convey the meaning.

So logically Jap words is the better solution of the two because it conveys more than the alternative.

Yep, italics are used for showing DIFFERENT LANGUAGES in text. That is, if those words are written in a foreign language then it is appropriate to use italics. Translating a foreign word into English and then italicising to mean it was spoken in a foreign language is not done, and if you want I can provide you an example to demonstrate. This may sound blunt but you're wrong with your interpretation.

Also if you're just listening to the tone and reading the script, English words are quite easy to mix.
