So I've been experimenting with making goblins playable, and it's been pretty interesting. Now that it's stable and all the initial weirdness is fixed I've been thinking about how to add in mechanics for other things they do in worldgen.

Sending snatchers and thieves who might succeed, fail, or even be killed are a must. Maybe raiding as well if I can figure out how to involve multiple goblins in it. I might also add reactions to trigger a migrant wave or just spawn in some extra gobs, which have a smaller but still nonzero chance of killing the one doing it. From the Threetoe stories with goblins in them there's a lot of murders going on so I've thought of making invisible castes that have higher average stats but'll sometimes attack loners or sleeping people. Good ideas?

Around the time when 31.xx hit, we were ata point where you all these fantastic promises, but they were still so far off. So people just accepted that. But now we're actually talking about implementing the foundation of some of the most awaited features in the near future (~5 years): sending out armies, boats, magic & more planes of existence. There's no resort, it's fixing behavior which is one of the chief causes of the horrible and unfun lag in dark fortresses, plus any site with a library, every goblin civilian has the absurd compulsion to rush to their death against your blades and fists.

It literally adds nothing of value to the game for goblins to behave normally through all of world-gen and the instant you step on screen they "remember" they're supposed to start biting people to death.

Adding [ALL_MAIN_POPS_CONTROLLABLE] should let you play as a gob from a goblin site, adding [LOCAL_POPS_PRODUCE_HEROES] to the gob creature lets you play them from other civs.

Nah, they suggested a problem (remove a civ link), I went for the first fix which is just grabbing gm-editor to find > delete the link. If it's' the general goblin civ playable stuff you can make them playable, but I seriously suggest anyone who adventures to just drop the required kill neutral behavior because it is the laggiest "non-bug" problem in the game.

Even with full populations of trolls and beak dogs in a dark fortress it's bearable if you don't have 10,000 goblin civilians get this insane urge to fight the bloodsoaked warrior that wandered in.

As it also fixes the "every libraray is a box of murder" problem since goblin scholars keep the "RAWR I GOTTA KILL YOU STRANGERS" nonsense and every town turns into a lagfuck of shittiness.

It isn't responsible for doing things like encouraging wars in world-gen, it does lead to absurd behavior like a goblin scholar visiting your fort and trying to pick a fight with your military, and it only seems like an earlier sort of stopgap behavior from the older versions to make goblin sites hostile.

The second is actually a creature token and makes the creature able to join a civilization in worldgen, though I'm pretty sure it's meant for civ-less creatures (gorlaks) since goblins are already capable of joining other civs in worldgen.

Looking at the screenshots, I can tell that it's a clusterfuck of conflicting art styles

Apart from that, the individual tiles don't sit well with me either. The dorfs are shown in a really weird and awqward way.

The walls are shown in the absolutely worst thinkable way, namely "pseudo-diagonal", which means that they won't look good on any type of fort layout.

The trees just look strange, not very treelike at all.

The return of pulping was an indirect upgrade to maces. Their larger contact area lets them damage tissue faster than warhammers, which can be important in an extended battle against zombies where every exploded limb counts. It also makes them a little better than warhammers against very large creatures, though neither is really optimal in that role.
I do wonder where the contact area sweet spot is for blunt weapons. Mauls obviously are way outside it, but I would guess if they were somewhere larger than maces but still below 1k they would be a lot more viable. A larger material size and velocity modifier would probably help too, and aren't unreasonable for a giant hammer. Maybe I'll test it tomorrow.

I always generate smaller worlds with this configuration of civs

2 elv civs
2 dorf civ
2 kobold civ

Humans end up the most numerous of the mortal races, dorf and elv end up evenly matched, and kobolds are weakest. Goblins remain on top, but not in such numbers that they can take over the whole world with ease. I find it to be the best distribution of population.

Guys, im stuck an need some help if you would be so kind. I finally got steel being produced at a decent rate but have no idea what i should be using it for first. The graphics yes/no setting has nothing to do with that. It only decides whether or not creatures use sprites. Right now you're telling the game to use creature sprites, and it's using the only ones it has access to, the example graphics. If you set graohics to no, nothing changes except that. Your dwareves will use the square tiles in the square tileset you have installed, and so will everything else.

A very big impact. That pop will probably only support a few good sized sieges or a whole bunch of small ones.
Have they been losing some wars recently? Maybe before you embark you can make an adventurer or three to wreak havoc on their enemies and give them an advantage. Maybe even try to retire some strong adventurers in goblin sites (without murdering your way there) to help out. You can use the gui/gm-editor calendar advancement trick to give them more time to recover between characters.
That probably sounds like a lot of work, but a perfect world is worth the investment, and worth getting to know more intimately.

Any given glyph of a certain color means the same thing in every tileset while creature and dwarf graphics vary from graphics set to graphics set and there isn't always enough information displayed in the tiny 16x16 or so graphics to discern what any given graphic tile is trying to represent.

Fort mode dwarves have weird hangups about butchering sapients even if you edit their values, so you'll probably have to do it in adventure mode.
First, add a custom adventurer reaction to tan skin into leather. There's a couple mods that do this already, you can copy one of them. Just search for adventure mode reaction mods.
Then, add a reaction to carpenter's workshop to make a leather chair, using leather and wood and taking the resulting item material from the leather.
Then, optionally, you can see if you can make leather chairs call themselves armchairs. It's "chair" for wood and "throne" for stone, so the framework exists, but I'm not sure if mods can access it.
Now, you can go around killing humans, butchering them, and turning them into chairs in a workshop you can construct. To use the chairs in fort mode, you'll have to retire the fort, walk over there with your adventurer carrying the chairs, and unretire the fort.

The ability to play as a forgotten beast. Some anon months ago had this idea for "forgotten beast mode." Basically you spawn in the caverns and you walk around killing fortresses that breach them. I always thought it would be cool if you got points to put toward features of the beast like toxic blood, claws, multiple limbs, flying, materials etc.

More realistically I want better animal husbandry, and more robust farming/fishing techniques. Nothing makes me REE more than the fact that an animal can't gain the domestic tag and be embarked with in later fortresses in the same world, and that it's a pain in the ass to train/breed aquatic animals at all.

Really, the whole alcohol brewing system should have been a lot more robust from the beginning. Making booze shouldn't be exactly as simple as making cat tallow and prickle berry biscuits, which shouldn't be quite so simple either. If nothing else, it should take TIME and water. You shouldn't be able to go from having nothing but plump helmets to having plenty of booze with one quick job; it should take at least a few weeks to ferment. That by itself would make the game more interesting in my opinion, and I'd think it'd be fairly simple to implement. It would also open up opportunities for other intricacies in both the production of booze and other things, like drugs. I think it'd be neat to have, say, forgotten beast dust rot be curable with a concoction made from certain herbs or whatnot, prepared the right way, by a dwarf with the right skills and materials, and setup. Like, you might have to take sliver barb, let it sit underground in a blood thorn barrel with sunshine for one month, and then mix that with, I don't know, powdered talc and royal jelly. It could all be procedurally generated too, though if the needed ingredients are too hard to find it might be useless without a slightly improved trading system, but we'd all like that too anyway.

I don't know, it's just something that's been sitting in the back of my head for years.

Your problem is more likely that your food stockpile is too small. They can only haul as many items as there are empty tiles in the stockpile.

the game is amazing as it is, is the most complex, most satisfactory, and one of the most autistic games I know, its fucking great.
But there are great games almost a dime a dozen for games to play, it only takes a couple hours max. to find a genuinely amazing/different game with the technology we have (internet).
Those games are cool and all, you might even play them a lot and become your favourite game and so. But eventually, you'll get tired of it/the dev. will sell out/the dev will fuck the game up, etc.
Learning about Toady, however, made me realize that he is not really gonna do any of that.
He has been developing the game with a vision, a very clear dream, for more time than any person I know (inb4 finland sim), and he is doing it alone, and he is doing it great.
He is also cautious when coding, has integrity, and is autistic enough to code the combat system, but normie enough to code a lust parameter to all sentient beings
I could be saying good things about him all day, but the thing is that's the truth

Check the archives for toweranon's posts. As far as I can recall, you should increase civs and let the history run for more towers. It helps to reduce the number of human/dwarf killers (i.e. savagery, megabeasts and so).

For population, there's setting in adv world gen in regards to that, and you can set the caps as you wish. I don't know how to specifically get more goblins, but you usually get lots of goblins anyway.

When the topic turns to a kindergarten art class the thread has de facto been reduced in quality. Pointing out that it is off topic is just damage control.
