Im sorry to not follow the OP, but I wanna settle this now

baby-opressing tyrant here

so, I went some minutes to look up some stuff and when I come back, the thread is completely filled with discussion and people pissed about stuff

I have tried to give back some fun to this general several other times now
If the majority of this general believes that every post that doesnt have 'Toady' 'Dwarf Fortress' or any other code word doesnt belong here, I must acept it, and I will stop posting about it
I dont like people asking me to tell a story and then getting assblasted because they are listening to a story
If you wanna behave like the children of my story, that's up to you
but the next time that you complain at the 123th 'hey guys, what music do you listen DF to?' (we had those of that in the previous thread, btw. two) or any other unoriginal and tiresome post, remember that the reason no-one posts amusing or instructive things is because of you and only you

Jesus christ, find some middle ground between joining a discord or being fucking content nazis /dfg/, I actually beg you to do it or we will die as a general

Now I will fuck off to make some needed stuff irl, see you in the next thread

I fear that we'd return only to find a new /dfg/ general that exists only to troll, say, the minecraft general or something.

/dfg/ has lived through rougher weather and longer release intervals before. The problem is that we've got some bad hombres here at the moment, and they've been here for the last two months, using every excuse to stir up a shitstorm.
>>
>>170815951
It definitely would be. The discussion here has gotten to be shit tier, and the posters have gotten to be aggressive autists. I'm going to guess it's the content drought and /rwg/ taking a big fat shit on this general, but the quality of discussion here has gotten to be so terrible.

Just leave it. If you want to keep arguing about whether off topic discussion belongs in /dfg/, the last thread is still up. Dragging it into another thread isn't helpful no matter which side you were on.

>>170816018
/dfg/ has been alive for years, during content feast and famine. It may need a bump once in a while during the lean times, but that's no reason to let it die. We're always slow anyway, and that's fine.

You're sure you've requested the trader? The merchants are actually trading and not just stuck? Green jobs are supposed to be interruptible any time, and I've never seen one that didn't interrupt immediately when job came available. Trading is very high priority, only eat/drink/sleep and purple needs jobs take precedence.

>Dragging it into another thread isn't helpful no matter which side you were on.

take note everybody, from a shitposting connoisseur, this is the end result every time some retarded sperglord crashes a discussion people are interested in even slightly. If you care about thread quality even one bit, you learn to let it go. Take this as a learning experience /dfg/, and don't make the same mistake again. You must let off topic shitposting take its natural course, or risk dire consequences in interfering.

he should move his ass over there soon, if you really want to make sure you could delete the location he's socialising at
as the teleology discussion, some guy brought up that it's scientifically proven that the purpose of human life is creation of offspring, several people told him that science doesn't deal with things like purpose, he didn't get it and the whole thing just spiraled out of control with like 100 posts

Yes, I'm sure I've requested the trader, and the merchants are still trading. The only wild animals are on the other side of my fort, it's the 4th of Sandstone and there have been no messages about them leaving. I guess if building walls nearby (but not blocking their way at all) causes problems that might be it, since I'm trying to block off everything but a wagon path to the depot while they're trading. I guess I'll wait one more dorf day or so and then delete the tavern room. I need to do that at some point anyway, since one of the musical instruments seems to have gotten stuck and I want to see if that unsticks it.

Firefox is objectively superior.

it's faster than IE, and doesn't spy on you like Chrome.
>>
>>170817742
nah, it's because "TRANS_NAME" is how the name of a character is defined in the speech files. when a character uses the line without having a name (i.e. due to being a nameless animal person out in the bush), they just use the variable instead.

Well, simply waiting did the trick, though it took until the 6th of Sandstone. I wonder if this might be due to the fact that he had to drink water instead of booze last time he drank. I'm not sure why that happened, but I'll be rectifying that particular issue soon.

I'm gonna need proofs for this, anon.

As far as I know, the only way an animal (as well as a "wild" animal person) can get a name is by killing a hist fig.

Talking to animals in adv mode creates nameless hist figs.

If the entire site was supposed to be used to discuss anime, then why are there special boards for it as well?

We keep /a/ in /a/ for the same reason that we keep /pol/ in /pol/, that is, not because we're offended by it, but because different boards have different purposes, and we want to preserve the diversity by not having the exact same discussions over several boards.
>>
>>170821097
replaying earlier versions can be a ton of fun. I started playing on the version with musical instruments, taverns and playable animal men, and every once in a while I like to play a fortress in the old 2d boatmurdered era version.
It's especially good because the wiki has separate sections for the older versions too.
>>
>>170820425
They were never really necessary if you knew the workaround for the bug that prevented proper sparring in .34.11. They were more effective than normal training then, and even after the nerf in .40 they were still more effective for brand new recruits. Not a good argument for using them, any more than any other exploit, but still true.

As ridiculous as it was, I really enjoyed the design of the movie. Stuff like the dwarven architecture, Smaug's character (not counting his dumb death), and the soundtrack were all great.

The dumb romance subplot, downright retarded combat, and horrible side characters ruined what could have been a really fun, if silly, adventure film. Also I wish they didn't pussy out on Thorin, Fili, and Kili and made them look proper dwarfy, instead of just short humans.

He's just a normal, fairly smart, dude who makes a game. This "anyone who does anything is autistic" meme is dumb. Listen to literally any of the podcasts featuring/interviewing Toady and you'll find out anyway.

Anyway the guys interviewing toady in this most recent one are retarded.
>>
>>170843907
there are different ways to be autistic (buzzword) anon, in this case toady being extremely meticulous and in depth is his autism.

Chris-chan is Gods joke on humanity and is actually autistic, not to mention one of the most well known spergs on the internet at this point
>>
>>170843907
of course not, he's obviously able to talk to people, go out in public etc. as made evident by his interviews
if he does have autism it's very mild
>>
>>170844492
I can talk to people, go in public, but it's mostly because I discovered people are very interesting animals, and I love animals.

Not as interesting as spiders or cats or parrots, but interesting nonetheless.
>>
>>170844701
Believe me anon, you most likely don't have autism. Even if you do, it's definitly of the light kind.

The autism meme that we use to label anyone who is even slightly interested in something that isn't mainstream enough is just that: a meme.

Here's a n example of actual serious autism:

I'm just a sperg, which is pretty fucking light end, and usually use it because I don't want to make it seem like I'm anywhere near as bad off as some. Toady acts like a sperg sometimes but not consistently enough.
>>
>>170846827
Was actually dxed years and years ago, but worth noting that pretty fucking light end means "sitting here with one glove because the clicking for my mousekeys setup gets on my nerves sometimes, but using a mouse annoys me more, and my qjoypad setup broke down so this is my solution so I can enjoy looking at my monitors which I shimmed and tweaked and constantly retweak until they're lined up juuuuust right, so I can read /dfg/ and epubs and dorf in comfort but I swear if that fan doesn't stop with the whirr-whirrr-wrreeeenn-whirr shit I'm gonna burn it on a pyre in the back yard soon" type of light.

I see things like the Toad rocking and being kawaii-desu-uguu and it's like "awww, he's a sperger too" but other stuff he does makes it seem like he's just been living more or less alone coding for decades and forgot how to human.
>>
>>170826036
It's kind of irritating to hear the interviewers talk about like what ebin internet memes they're aware of and try to one up each other. This seems to happen a lot with podcasts Toady is a guest on.

lol no. Sorry kid, you've been assigned as a hauler/planter for life. It turns out it's way more efficient to hire immigrant skilled armorsmiths than it is to train them from scrach. Please keep your filthy little peasant hands out of precious fortress steel or you'll be sent to the dungeons.

Artifact mechanisms are good. Valuable lever to make dwarves happy, weapon trap that never jams, or a super valuable well.

This is what a useless artifact looks like.
>>
>>170866202
This makes me think moods are a bit too gamey for how realistic DF tries to be. I mean, the concept of this weird mental obcession hitting anyone periodically and it being inevitably deadly for everyone involved if the dwarf fails at obtaining what they want is too weird. It's too traumatizing a constant for a civilization to bear.

Moods should be more flexible, especially fey moods. Maybe if the dwarf can't find a specific resource, he'd just cancel the mood and have a happiness hit for a while.
>>
>>170868083
It's really not hard to get what a dwarf needs. Way too easy. Now if they wanted dragon bone or dragon leather that's another story.

honestly i feel there just needs a little leeway.

>Urist McMood: Guys look I really need alligator leather for this sweet ass boot Im gonna make.
>Quartermaster: Yeah okay but we're on a glacier, that shit ain't gonna happen.
>Urist McMood: *grumble* I guess I'll settle.

McMood then takes a hit to his happiness and gets a negative thought cause it will never be as 'perfect' as he wants, and as such he doesnt get as large a boost in the skill.

However the question then becomes how much leeway is too much? Obviously substituting cloth for candy would be too far, but even going straight one-to-one (eg. stone for stone, metal for metal, etc) doesn't quite feel right either.
>>
>>170870036

>>
>>170870331
>>170869987
>However the question then becomes how much leeway is too much?
I just think deadly moods should be rarer. The kind of mood that makes a single dwarf take the entire fortress hostage should be a once in a fort thing, not a once in a season thing.

I'm seeing this from a civilization perspective. Think about it: imagine living in a society where every few months one random person inevitably gets in a crazy mood where he demands specific objects from the site he's living in or else he'll go on a suicidal rage. It's a depressive death cult. Everyone would be paranoid and manic-depressive about losing their kids or loved ones to insanity.
>>
>>170870884
You already live under constant threat from sieges, funny shit lurking in the caverns, random megabeasts deciding to pay you a visit and you have to do everything according to the will of some god (the player) whose antics may very well get everyone killed for his personal amusement. Some joker stripping off and running around in circles because he got emo over not having some specific item is nothing.

You are thinking small time, add a new option to the justice screen that deal with the mood of dwarfs, you can order your Hammerer to try to persuade the dwarf based on Speaker, Persuader, Consoler and/or Intimidator skill, you have two option: force the dwarf to change the material he need, which results in complete the artifact with a temporal or (dependent in goals) permanently hit to happiness or immediate enrage, and the second option is to force the dwarf to give up the artifact that results in a permanently hit to happiness and prove to melancholy or the dwarf committing suicide or becoming catatonic.
>>
>>170871562
Aside from sadistic player decisions, all the problems you listed are perfectly rational and straightfoward. I mean, that's why you make a fortress in the first place: you build defenses so goblins and megabeasts won't be able to destroy your society and you get to keep your family safe.

However, the fact that your species have a weird genetic desease that makes every member of the community, like clockwork, contract a periodic condition where they need to perform specific actions where they require specific items or they'll go nuts and literally die is fucking bizarre though. They would think of nothing else. Maybe that's why dwarves are so willing to live in gulag conditions and are so industrious in the first place - to make sure they always have a large number of useless materials stockpiled because they know they may need it when they inevitably get a mood one day.

At least my broker leveled up his negotiation skill, but somehow his need to argue and his need to cause trouble didn't get filled. Also, I had already gotten most of what I wanted out of them, so I'm not too upset. It still seems kind of bitchy on the merchant's part though.

I sort of started out ruined by DF before I knew it existed. I remember playing ADOM and thinking that it sucks how, despite the fact that you're questing to save the world there's nothing worth dying for. Because no matter how much of a pathetic nobody you are, there's never another adventurer in the same timeline who can build on what you did in your life; if you die all your progress is lost and it's like you never existed.

Fuck this also is a thing. DF's system where every character save is part of the same world is so fucking cool.

No. If you're asking because of the grown wooden goods, what I did was:
1>In fall of year 5 the dwarven liason asks for splints and figurines for the next year
2>In the spring of year 6 the elves bring some grown wooden splints and figurines, which I buy
3>In the spring/summer of year 6 I decorate the elven trade goods with bones, which causes them to show up as domestically produced
4>In the fall of year 6 I sell them to the dwarven merchants for a significant profit, or at least I would
>>
>>170892065
>Not much pisses me off more than traders getting pissy when they get huge profits and still demand more.
the dangerous journey creates surplus value.

in the future, when Toady lets us send our own caravans, they'll be the ones jewing the other settlements, rightfully, because of the great risk you took by sending your best merchants there.

the trade in DF uses a bartering system.

the prices you see on both sides are the asessments your broker makes. they aren't any final "price tags" or anything like that. the actual prices are determined through the actual bartering taking place after both sides put forward their offers.

>forego huge profits
if you take into the consideration all the preparations they did for the journey, as well as the salaries and equipment for the caravan guards, the profits won't be so large after all. like I said, their trip to you creates surplus value.

lastly, it's not like they leave your fort after one failed bartering attempt. you get many chances at making new offers. after a while, when it becomes obvious to them that you're trying to jew them out of their goods, they get tired and leave.
>>
>>170895330
this
in the olden days trading was a high-risk, high-profit profession. if traders put up with the risk of bandits and all the costs of a long journey, they did so because they could make a huge profit
>>
>>170895330
>they aren't any final "price tags" or anything like that.
One problem with this is that they are. The numbers you see may be the assessment your broker makes, but they're ALSO the item's inherent value as defined by its base type, its materials and the quality of worksdwarfship.
>get tired and leave
Which means they suffer all the costs of their trading venture, with nothing to show for it. It's not even remotely reasonable.
>>
>>170895806
they can probably sell that stuff off elsewhere, and that way you'll probably give them better deals in the future
>>
>>170895806
it's funny that you failed to address what I wrote about surplus value. do you honestly think that all merchants and their bodyguards do their long journey for free? do you honestly think that the price tags on all items you see in IRL stores correspond to the items' "inherent value"?

please take economics 101. also, kindly stay away from all positions of power.
>>
>>170895330
>their trip to you creates surplus value.
And them taking my stuff back makes my stuff even more valuable.
>>
>>170896027
>do you honestly think that the price tags on all items you see in IRL stores correspond to the items' "inherent value"?
No. I'm talking about the game. There's no reason to get pissy about it. In dwarf fortress, each item type has a base value, which is multiplied by its material value and the quality multiplier. Supply and demand don't come into it.

I'm not. you're the one throwing a fit because the merchants were mean to you.

and like I said, bartering is never as simple as "trade goods for other goods with the same value". if it was like that, their dangerous journey would be for free. the merchants need to be compensated for their trip to you. otherwise, they might just take their goods to a nearby settlement which isn't as cheap as you.

it makes sense.

That'd be all well and good if it was actually based on factors that exist in the game, and not just an arbitrary punishment for failing to bribe the merchants enough.
You might be the only other site in the world, and the traders will still rather go home than deal with more than five offers from you.

it all depends on your taste in fun.

there are plenty of details to obsess over in adv mode.

as of 0.40, everyone in the towns have daily schedules and spend their days actually doing shit and visiting places, and 0.42 gave them actual places to visit (libraries, taverns).

we have a pretty living world now. the artifact release will make it even moreso.

>>
>>170941678
That sounds more fun as a TV show but I don't think so.
People want to escape lives and become monsters or demigods and kick ass. Or tiny dwarves and get their asses kicked like in dwarf fortress.
I think not only is the idea too mundane for most, but it's probably pretty depressing to pretend to have a mental illness considering most of us here sure act like it

Fuck off, we have the rimworld shits to deal with and want no more.

>>170941678

I can see why you say that
the tone of the game will be a lot more acid than slice of life, and a lot more dramatic, as there's a lot of stuff to make people worry about their game, like circus-like roulettes denoting the consequences. Oh and russian roulette too
If you see anime, it could be explained as not like Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei, but more like deadman wonderland, without the edgyness, and with more action from the players

The game is also designed from the beggining to be made very personalizable if the players want, adding fake or new illnesses based on a tag system, or adding costum areas

Burrows will help, but not completely. Do this:
>make a 5x5 room
>line the walls with beds
>make each bed a child's room
>make it a burrow and assign all children
>build a bridge in the middle
>as children fill the room lock the door

The old bodyswap still needs to be incorporated properly into the system, I think it's still there under advtools but that's annoying cause you gotta go over and cycle through options to use it instead of point+hotkey, and the first time I wrote up an assumecontrol script there was a problem with how it cleaned things up, this one works right but make sure you save before you travel so you don't get giant-bat'D

Well the easiest is bring banned trade goods to the trade depot but seeing as children can't do that they're going to have to destroy something through a tantrum. Just use the burrow area to keep them within it, or block them off and drop down supplies to them.

I just had my first ever goblin siege.
I thought my fancy walls would help me but everything seemed to work against me.
controlling squads was a joke, there was no control at all.

some goblins got in through a crack in the wall somehow and just started shooting on my guys in the middle of the tiny little square you see there behind the bridge.

i decided to open the bridge thinking it would be easier to fight the goblins that way.
it was like the intro to saving private ryan with dwarves.

there was zero control after that point.

I expect the roc is probably too big to be killed by one snakewoman bite, but I don't know much about how venom works in DF so don't take my word for it. Stuff can die while you're contemplating the meaning of death though, if that's what you mean. I tested it a while ago, and spending time as a corpse definitely can make the difference between something getting murderized or living as though it were never in danger, for example: my crippled, unconscious companions on the floor of the lair of the night creature who just bit my head off after breaking their hands and making them give in to pain.

Tons of items with no use, and an excessively detailed crafting system. He's not wrong that it's bloat, but it's good bloat. It's like asking for a wrench and being given a whole machine shop that probably has a wrench in somewhere. You're bombarded by choices and options pretty much instantly. Most of it is superfluous to the business of surviving and killing zombies.
If DF had the same thing he would defend it as substance and flavor if someone called it bloat.

The adventure arc under delivered and has been largely untouched unless you really, really like reciting poetry. People have been born and reached puberty since Toady touched some of the core content of adv mode and it's the only thing that is jankier than Fortress mode.

I don't know I've gotten increasingly jaded with the development of DF over the years. It's harder to excuse things when the updates we get are so small compared to the time it took for them to come out.

Adventure mode is shallow, anon is right.
There are only a handful of things to do, and none of them are very satisfying. "Quests" are all samey "go to place and kill thing" jobs. They have no reward beyond a reputation bump if you can manage to navigate 30 pages of being "attacked" by ravens to find the right entry. Reputation doesn't do much of anything when it works right, but it's really more bug than feature at this point.
NPCs are nearly all nameless and faceless literally whos. They all share the same ~30 lines of dialogue that they will repeat mindlessly to you and one another whenever you're unfortunate enough to be in earshot of them.
You can dance and sing because why the fuck not.
You can build a settlement that serves no purpose and has no connection to the rest of the world. It's basically a tedious version of fort mode with none of the management, world interaction, or threats, and limited to wood.
The most interesting things you can do in adv mode is play tavern keeper, which is only interesting for about 5 minutes, and throwing corpses into husking clouds and trying to escape.
It will be good someday, but not today.
>>
>>171008617
While I agree there isn't much to do, you are more than capable of making up your own fun. I've spent many hours in adventure mode, either just wandering around the countryside and mountains, Fighting off roving bands of marauders, or just going on mad killing sprees with cute, fluffy animal people.

>>171008617
ay fuk u m8 u tak thet shiz bak
>>
>>171009164
I'd rather just play a better game than frustrate myself in the name of making my own fun.

And this was one of those times where I gave adv mode another honest attempt and was reminded why it's so awful. And because I'm apparently a masochist I chose to voice this here where I full well knew I'd get shit for it on principle.
>>
>>171007237
>You're bombarded by choices and options pretty much instantly
never found that to be a problem, its pretty easy to cut out a lot of the choices.
only looking at the highest tier you can craft leaves not much to go through.
>>
>>171009829
>I full well knew I'd get shit for it on principle

No one's seriously condemning you anon, don't be a little bitch. Adventure mode is definitely not the easiest thing to get into, but it has it's strong points. Hell, I even know that there are people who exclusively play df adventure mode, and never even touch fort mode. You can either think creatively or something, or simply find another thing to play, as you like.
>>
>>171008617
the problem is that you see adventure mode as a "game" in the traditional sense.

personally, I see it more as a platform through which I can explore and interact with the the persistant worlds that the game creates and simulates. I don't give a shit about my character getting x amount of reputation. I'm more for seeking out all those people I read about in legends mode, and being reassured that they actually exist in physical form in the game world. I like exploring catacombs and reading the slabs of the buried hist figs, knowing that what I read on them is real information about real people, and that the cause of death is something that actually happened.

that's the kinda thing that no other games have offered me so far. that's the fix that ONLY df adv mode can give to me.
>>
>>171009164
I don't disagree, I've done it. I'm not criticizing from a place of ignorance. And I have made my own fun, and lot's of it. Combat can be a blast, but mechanically that's the deep end unless you want to piece together the world's history through story telling, which isn't a kind of fun many people are prepared to have.
I don't hate adv mode, but I like what it's going to be a whole lot more than what it is now. And I think we, as a general, can be honest about its shortcomings instead of beating that old "muh depth and complexity" horse whenever someone comes to the very reasonable conclusion that they don't enjoy it.
>>
>>171010328
I'm not shirking away to a safe space about it.

I do completely disagree though. DF fans are so adjusted to the game that making the best of what we have is considered normal. I've been trying to get into adventure mode for 6 years and hit the highlights people bring up.

And you get shit like >>171010339 where frankly, it's being an apologist. This is a video game. It isn't a work of art. It isn't an abstract story telling device. And that manner of dismissal has led to the glacial speed actual game content has been added over the last 4 years while we have gotten loads and loads of "lore" that can more accurately be conveyed as fluff.

It's inarguable that I have watched this general become harder and harder to maintain and the people who remain are the ones that have bought into the dev blogs hard.

Stories come from gameplay. Games aren't interactive stories.
>>
>>170897038

>>
Just encountered someone who has Loli as their first name.

I feel so sorry for them.
>>
>>171011048
I don't appreciate how you completely dismissed my entire post as being apologetic.

I was honest when I said that DF was one of the few games that I can throughly enjoy. And judging by the dev log, it's gonna stay an enjoyable game for me indefinitely.

I'm not saying that everyone has to find DF in their own taste. You must, however, understand that there are people who genuinely enjoy it. This enjoyment isn't, as you suggest, the result of ignorance of how shallow the game "really" is. We simply have different taste.

Personally, I just love exploring the worlds in all three modes. I love using shit like gm-editor to figure out new things about the dynamics of the game and the worlds it creates.

And to be honest, I find your tone a bit condescending. It's as if you imply that anyone who actually enjoys the game is too "new" or "inexperienced" to reach the same conclusions that you did, namely that it's shallow and full of bloat.
>>
>>171010339
I'm not, though. I think you missed the point of my post. The persistent world is simulated really well at a higher level of abstraction, but from the adventurer's perspective the world is static. All those people are just standing around talking at each other. They don't want anything, they don't do anything. They're all the same brainless happy faces, only some of them can be coaxed to spit out a string of text that resembles what it says about them in legends. Nothing about them is "real" until you stop looking.
If you want to play geographer and fill out your map that's all well and good. It's fun once in a while. But the people aren't peopley, they're all essentially similar in every way that is meaningful for interacting with them in adventure mode.
