I've been replaying 4U over the past few days and having lots of fun doing so. The thought of going back to Gen makes me sick though. I'll give XX a chance but I'm not going to keep going if I'm not having any fun. Lately I haven't played MonHun exclusively.

Back in the days of FU/Tri, I'd play nothing but MonHun, and sink hundreds of hours in over the course of the games life.

I don't play long enough to get burned out, honestly. I reach X HR, grind out the highest tier quests, and seem to fizz out and quit.

I put Gen down months ago, and only just picked it back up. I have to say though, XX looks enticing, mostly because of G rank and two new styles.

I do want MH 5 though, I don't think spin-offs are healthy for a franchise if they take control.

Depends on the quest, some may be more generous but yes it gets annoying. Especially when you need something like four pieces, the first three runs end up giving you one piece each and then the fourth rewards you three.

"Monsters"

With the Bow of Memes and Dreams I have the following:

Normal/Rapid Up
Load Up
Trueshot Up
Weakness Exploit

Now I can fit either bombardier or attack up S in addition. Which would be better? Attack up S raises the raw from 245 to 255 and would be good with the crits from weakness exploit plus overall damage from hitting anywhere really. Bombardier raises the blast from 30 to 36. I don't know how much more often that would get detonations but it seems to do it pretty often already and more true damage is always good, plus my aim isn't absolutely perfect so I'm going to miss the weak spot sometimes and bombardier will be working at all times no matter where I hit, but so will attack up S. I can't decide.

The problem with styles isn't that it's too 'flashy' or 'anime' for monster hunter but rather makes the game hard to balance.

Aerial and Adept makes the game so incredibly easy. If you tune up the monsters to make them harder with Aerial and Adept, Guild and Striker playstyles suddenly become impossible to use as the monsters are tuned for players with abundant mobility and i-frame abuse.

No, that is exactly the issue, it misses the slow and calculated combat of older MH.

That's not an issue, MH isn't meant to be balanced. If one style is meant to be easier than the other that's completely fine, that's the point of styles, to play differently.

I don't really find aerial to be overpowered. In my experience it's just a really shitty style that isn't very strong and the aerial attacks generally aren't all that strong except for the hammer's double smash and charge blade AEDs. It allows any weapon to mount anywhere but mount thresholds are much higher so it's not anywhere near as bad as 4U insect glaive and the very low mount thresholds. I just really can't take aerial style seriously, I look at it in about the same way as I look at prowlers. Adept as it is now is yeah, really forgiving. You have a lot of time to dodge and most weapons get a pretty good attack out of it. I have heard people say that adept's base window has been shortened by a lot in XX but that the SP art buff brings it back to original level. I don't know how long SP buffs last though.

Every attack art is slow as shit, way slower than your normal attacks. Plus besides a few cases like energy blade, shoryugeki, and bug blow they're not overly flashy animation wise. Just got a lot of fancy particle effects added onto them. Like greatsword's ground slash animation is believable, he just runs forward and does a backward slash pretty similar to the one in the normal moveset, it just has the particle shockwave effects on it that makes it look over the top. Lion's maw, that's just a round swing that sheathes. That dragon blast gunlance art is just a big wyvern's fire with too large of a visual radius. Most others are buffs. The only ones that are really bad are the evades which are get out of jail free cards that charge up so fast they're pretty much always available any time you could need them.

By the end of the day everyone agrees that styles and HAs need to go.

Gotta be honest, I like having adept as a gunner. I didn't use gunner weapons super often in G rank in past games because there's no room for even one mistake. Blademasters can afford to fuck up here and there, they can take a hit unless it's something really strong. As a gunner if you get hit once it's probably going to one shot you. So you trade all of this defense for a ranged weapon that isn't really all that long ranged without trajectory and generally isn't doing far and away more damage than blademaster weapons unless you're damage stacked and sieging pierce or something. MH ranged weapons are pretty close up compared to what other games would consider ranged combat. It just never felt like a fair trade to have paper armor and all the extra and sometimes bothersome maintenance for ammo stocks. You can however have access to multiple ailments at once while blademasters are stuck with one at a time and that can be useful if your team can take good advantage of it. I still used them sometimes but it could be really stressful against some monsters. Having adept really cuts down on the worry that you'll get clipped in the toe and one hit killed.
