And then my brain went to the Human World arc. And then my brain went to Earth Defense Force. And then my brain went to EDF 2017. And then my brain went to fighting vicious giant insects. Aaaand it's back to xcom.
>>
>>170343683
Considering I haven't played those EDF games - when I played the Human World arc, and the invasion of the Human World scenario in Disgaea 1, I kind of likened the EDF to X-com.

So Disgaea 1, technically, became X-com vs. The Army of Darkness

So.

>>
So whats going on
>>
>>170355834
No, it'd be more like we were committing genocide. The aliens rely on a mostly mindless clone army. Which is great when you're in control, no risk of insubordination or defection, etc. However that also means without the top leadership their forces are practically helpless.
>>
>>170356696
Were mutons clones in ew i thought they weren't?
>>
>>170357065
They almost certainly were unless they were genetically engineered while they were embryos. The autopsy reports that they are practically 100% muscle with no real fat. That can't possibly exist in nature. But they seem to retain some of their base societal instincts, given their proclivity for tribal tattoos and war cries.

>>
>>170368478

I have very little free time but Im doing what I can.

But for now Im stuck with trying to find out, where game stores skills descriptions, so I can make new ones based on existing ones.

Even if I dont have ideas for new ones yet, except for obligatory resist crossfire and underbarrel grenade launcher/flamethrowers.
>>
>>170368814

XComGame.int, you should see stuff like "[Suppression X2AbilityTemplate]" that should show you how to set up an ability description.
>>
>>170367464

Okay, it indeed fixed issue.

Game run, froze when trying to generate map for testing purposes but at least when trying to modify squad, I could setup my class.

For some reason tho, when I tried to select it in character pool, it showed empty space instead.
>>
>>170369057

Yeah, thats for description, but I was thinking about where the abilities are defined in first place.

You know, for example how in classdata.ini, you have defined tree with, for example "AbilityName="RapidFire" - but somewhere the ability must be defined first - what animations it use, what exactly it does and so on.
>>
>>170371113

Presuming you didn't delete the example XComGame code modbuddy adds in by default, look for classes named something like X2Ability_RangerAbilitySet

It's simple, bring gernades or a MEC, someone with sprinter, and someone with a rocket launcher. At least one squadsight sniper recommended but not necessary.

Destroy every hanging shark on your way.

The rocket will make short work of the chryssalid pod activated halfway.

Position everone on overwatch on the top port just before entering the ship.

Make the sprinter dash on the top part of the ship and run to the controls, then make him go behind the console so chryssalids that jump up won't get them.

Next turn mad dash everyone to the pickup point.

Like all special missions, it's when you go in blind that it fucks you up.

So guys, first time playing any xcom game, got enemy unknow for free thanks to one of you, i only have to say, that was quite a fun ride but i was dissapointed at the lack of main missions, and that silly ending.

was he a hero?

>>
>>170382068
>At least one squadsight sniper recommended
snipers are the worst class for that mission in LW and I'm pretty sure in EW too

the lines of sight are shit and kiting is unreliable, plus unnecessary if you bring enough firepower to wipe a pod to start with
>>
>>170384791
Basically what I did was, after I activated the airstrike, was wipe out the two pods that spawn when you're moving the guy that triggered the strike and then haul ass to the extraction point.
Unmodded, vanilla, normal difficulty.

just redownloaded Xcom2
Xcom2 was pretty damn trash on release and I pretty much stopped playing it after 120 hours ish but I redownloaded it for longwar2 and I have to say long war fixed a lot of issues. but now I can't stand basic shit that has been in in since the series began.

I can't stand flanking one alien with two people close enough to headbutt him and then having them both miss

I can't stand snake bitches pulling me from texas to north dakota

I can't stand the stupid fucking random maps with objectives over in china only to have a guy accidently get spotted because of how bad fog of war can be combine with the concealment system.

I can't stand the fact that concealment is such an under utilized mechanic and that they never thought to have stealth take downs or a hide system that allows you to conceal yourself again.

instead of people thinking what would make this game more fun they thought what will make this game harder.

transfering from x-com EW to X-com2 is fucking trash. even without mechs EW is a lot morre fun and a lot less bullshit.

whats worse is while long war is a straight upgrade from the base game, it add more pointless randomness to the game such as random grenade damage, cars don't have hp but basicly set on fire randomly when you toss grenades at it it seems and having a guy with pathetic movement speed get the shinobi class is annoying as fuck.

theres no point to this comment.
everytime I open this game within an 1 or 2 of playing I alt-f4 out. why make a long as fuck mod if it's going to be bullshit from battle one and then the bullshit effecting you early basicly makes it impossible to beat later.

I know it's not all what I think needs to improve. I just saying I don't really enjoy that shit.

I'm not saying make point blank shots 100% chance to hit at all times or or that running past an aliens shouldn't be able to spot you just because you didn't see them when you dashed half way across the map.

I'm just saying that shit doesn't make me smile, it just makes me sigh and roll my eyes and then I think great time to spend half an hour losing. seeing as theres very little room for comebacks in xcom which is funny seeing as it's about the galaxies best comeback.

it's stupid that advent are better than a rookie yet you you're out numbered and out resorced. advent should panic too, that alone would fix the game a ton in my opinion, to make it make sense plot wise the advent could panic and then they could be sent a shock to the helmet to keep them focused when they come out of it.

also for long war, did they really think that not being able to crit the flying drones was a good thing? they fill a great purpose and they are fun to have to work around but the fact that they eat up reaction shots forces you to focus fire them some when you flank you can use reaction shots to finish a person off but that eats up 2-3 turns or worse just to take out a shitty fucking drone. if you could crit them it would at least be better. machines have critical components too.
>>
>>170400036
>it's stupid that advent are better than a rookie
Just not true. The fact that your rookies can have nades already disproves that.
> did they really think that not being able to crit the flying drones was a good thing
>shooting drones
nades

But anyway, if you want a real comeback simulator, play x-com.
>>
>>170400306
the play style I was using mostly used grenades for taking people out of overwatch so I could flank.
but the nades point works well both times. throwing grenades at drones usually works for me, shame about concealment attacks getting ruinined when my small but sneaky squad ambushes and wastes half their attacks on one drone.

>>170399101
A cool mechanic would be if concealed and you spot a pod of say, 3 Advent troopers, you can have three XCOM agents "prepare" to strike and all three get hit at once. If they're killed, you remain concealed.

Would be hard to balance but it would be a cool way to progress the map. Real Spinter Cell stuff.
>>
>>170401461

There's a couple of mods with something like that, one with a class that has that ability(Spec Ops class) and one that gives the ability to supressors, don't remember the name of that mod but it's by the same guy that made the Spec Ops class, Musashi.
>>
>>170401461
I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the intent and scope behind concealment. XCOM is not and never has been a stealth game.

Concealment was implemented in response to fan complaints that the aliens always had the drop on you in an engagement, at least unless they patrolled into you. Concealment works to rectify this and allow you to set up an ambush.
>>
>>170401650
even if they only wanted it to be this the time makes ambushing the only bone they ever throw you mechanic wise and it's shit. the shinobi class get it right but even if stealth killing isn't an option they should have at least made it so that advent only spot people that are close to the person who was spotted. not everyone.
>>
>>170402293
Your complaints boil down to "I don't like the enemy having an advantage over me."

Tough shit. Without what little they have, the enemy would get steamrolled worse than they are already.

Well I'm playing on a DS4 controller and holding the X button will make the unit teleport to the highlighted location. Pressing the X button is normal and the unit runs to the location just fine.

I also have weird options on the main menu. Instead of new game, load game, etc.. I get options like strategy and tactical and demo. When I start a new game I get options like new game, new game (controlled) and IRONMAN. it's weird.
>>
>>170421823
Sounds like you have the console mod. Once you load of the game, are you starting your campaign after hitting the "Final Shell Menus" or whatever that button is? Pretty sure you are playing the game from the dev pre-release mode.
>>
>>170421990

That sounds about right. My brother probably installed it then because he played it after me. He was complaing about how his Valkyrie didn't get lit em up because he highlighted to the left of the icon when he selected it. Maybe he fixed it.

So what can I do with this mod? Should I uninstall it?
>>

Don't uninstall it. Having the dev console enabled can have it's uses. Just be sure to always start games after going to the Final Shell menu button, so that you don't get any hinkiness. I used this mod as well, and I didn't have any weird stuff happen to me.

LW2 on the other hand was a catastrophe and it ruined everything, even Beagle quit.

I think X2 is overall a worthy successor to EW but its flaws are rather stark, most notably in performance. I think EW just is more memorable too; all the enemies are aliens and that just helps it stick in your mind. ADVENT, while verisimilitudinous, are more or less human enemies and are thus kind of boring.

I think LW caught a lot of attention for how utterly brutal it was and continued to get. My experience with LW2 is that it's a bit harder, but mostly is just a different and expanded game experience. Which is less attention-grabbing but actually is kind of what I wished LW1 was.

In X2, aliens are something you see fairly rarely and only as you progress the game. They're there, sure, but it doesn't feel quite like you're fighting alien overlords when you're fighting Generic Advent Troopers. I mean yeah you find out they're not human and all that but still.

>>
>>170464285
I think you just have to avoid making a mod that lasts over 100 hours, EW never felt really repetitive.

Despite the common complaints, I actually found the various LZ's made the way each map played different enough I could have fun with LW. The only problem is when you got maps that are really shitty, I'm talking that landed medium in the dark forest map with its vast lines of sight, STREET HURRICANE, that fucking graveyard they just HAD to bring back, it's just awful sometimes.

Has anyone figured out a foolproof way to tell if meld is expiring? I'm aware of the audio/video comparisons between fresh and nearly expired meld, but I can only tell the difference when they're side by side - no telltale marks to look for in an isolated canister.

>>170467036
That's the only indicator.

>>170466416
LW? They aren't that uncommon on landed missions.
>>
>>170467036
Sound. The pulsing sound of a Meld canister gets faster the closer it gets to expiration. If your canister is going bwoom, bwoom, bwoom, you've got a little time. If it's going bwoombwoombwoom, you have MAYBE two turns, but I wouldn't bet on that.

Meld's always a trap, anyway.
>>
>>170467306
Way back when I played EW on release I used a mod that added small quantities of Meld in the drop tables.
It was less then what you got from a canister, but gave another option other than risking your soldiers.

LW has that inbuilt, but meld is way more important there because you can sell it.

How big of a tech tree is too big?
>>
>>170472312
I feel that if the tech tree makes meaningful additions to the tactical game size shouldn't be an issue
>>
>>170472312
Technically can't be too big. However, as the tech tree expands, certain safety measures must be put in place. For example, if you need to capture one particular enemy or get on particular tech when there are tons of factions and some enemies are rare, or items are rare, you can get stuck in the tech tree waiting to find that one rare enemy or item. To resolve this, there needs to be ways for the player to pro-actively go after the tech they are missing, or for their to be multiple routes through the tech tree. So your tech tree can be as big as you want it, but as it grows larger, more issues tend to crop up which require intentional effort to resolve.

How? With the Mimic beacon, and the basic game mechanic of producing sound by grenade or window breaking allows for you to get the drop in on aliens when they come to investigate.

He's talking about EU, where noise wasn't a thing. A very common complaint was that aliens get a "free turn" when activated. This really screws normal players when they activate a pod on a yellow move. There were plenty of players looking for a mod to disable the mechanic, presumably so they can rush through every mission killing every alien on the map with a first-turn flank.

I yellow moved when I was first starting, yea. After a few missions I learned that was a very stupid thing to do.

If people can go entire XCOM campaigns without learning to work with a basic mechanic, I don't know what to say.
>>
>>
>>170487813
It has more to do with that people wanted to have the opportunity to ambush enemies at least once.

The trouble is I never properly "ambush" past gatecrasher. I just open up with an AOE attack and then make my moves. In vanilla I would have my specialist use aid protocol on themselves later in the game, in conjunction with guardian and threat assessment. That way I could exploit the lack of an overwatch penalty without losing out on a unit's full turn.

what's op? are snipers and psi as good as they were in vanilla? what class do i train to reliably mindbreak slutty sectopod sexbot, and in which ways? what do i research and build? should i rush psionics?

>>170502252
Snipers are still good but gunslingers have all but been removed unless you like putting someone in the AWC for two months. Psions are also good but take longer to get off the ground and are skills are not unlimited. With NCE enabled you can get crazy OP hacker specialists, which may help secure your dreams of hacking sectopods (there is even a MSGT specialist ability that allows permanent control of robots.) I would build GTS ASAP to get officers as soon as possible, you can make any class an officer but I like using specialists.

Basic research and engineering research are abilities that reduce the scientist and engineer requirements for projects, respectively.

Are you kidding me? Gunslingers with bluescreen rounds were ridiculously broken. With some shred from another unit they could quasi solo a sectopod.

You get a lot of loot in general provided you don't blow their corpses sky high, so I don't think vulture is strictly necessary. However in my current campaign I had just bought it and got 5 elerium cores my next mission.

Officers provide several passive bonuses to a squad as well as many useful active ones. Command alone makes them worth training.

or you could instead keep your specialist safe and take "hack workstation" missions every time, take hack reward, rig rng with shooting, and get a 150+ specialist by the time decent robots show up and have some fun with them. it also nets you shitloads of intel and other goodies from mindfuck and lamps.
of, i also never used bluescreen and have no idea what it does to this day.
> I don't think vulture is strictly necessary
well in vanilla it's super op because it gives you more better upgrades. superior expanded mags are essential for endgame snipers. do ayys still drop upgrades?

yea, i read up on officers, they have a good potential for minimaxing with nce
>>
>>170504393
Bluescreen rounds confer +3 bonus damage on mechanical targets. This for some reason includes codices and gatekeepers, which is amusing.

Aliens do still drop upgrades, and it seems to occur more frequently on missions that do not allow for full salvage of corpses (e.g. VIP extract missions).

Oh you mean HAVENS. Yeah, the first month you want everyone on intel to get the most missions that are doable.
>>
>>170507107
MECs are broken. Rush rush rush mecs. 50 meld per dude, chop up your snipers, play with Not Created Equally and Hidden Potential.

You'll endgame want 5 MECs and 1 psion (because volunteer lol).

First research is meld recombination. Rush satellites over Asia to get engineers and sats rolling, and just win. Since snipers have the best aim progression, if you get them as rewards from council missions (cough cough van doorne rescue op) they make very good candidates.

You'll want a North America start, then sat up Asia, and then South America. Why SA? We Have Ways. Your MECs are ALL gonna take Vital Point Targeting, upgrading their chainguns to 6-8 damage. Take powerfists on all your MECs besides the first one, who will want a flamethrower to reliably deal with shitty situations.

Ideally your volunteer soldier is a Heavy. Why? Heavies can take Grenadier, which gives them 4 damage on grenades, exactly enough to reliably kill Sectoids. After you have a few MECs (probably 1 or 2), you'll want to get Mimetic Skin on your non-mec soldier to make the game easy mode.
>>
>>170507204
Resistance haven rebels are best for gathering intel, especially early game. I personally like to set all but one to intel and the last one to recruit. Supply is a useful job but is more effective once the region has been liberated, and having more guys on intel will help that occur faster by virtue of discovering missions earlier; thus giving you more time to infiltrate prior to their expiry.

The avenger also gives a bonus to intel gathering to the region it scans in. That bonus is equivalent to four rebels on intel duty, so it pays to "park" in a region you have particular interest in.
>>
>>170507528
Sounds solid. Props to you.
>>
>>170507528
Cont'd random shit

Build a Foundry pretty early on. This'll set you up to do the Heavy Infantry Vehicle project and subsequent MEC Close Combat project, which gives you a fist weapon that does 18 damage. That will one-shot virtually anything you encounter with a tiny bit of damage from other sources.

Elaborating on Vital Point Targeting: you need to autopsy enemies to get your damage bonuses, and We Have Ways makes autopsies instant so you can't get screwed and have to do missions without damage bonuses. This is super useful because Friends in Low Places gives you a free Muton to autopsy way before they usually show up, so you can be prepped.

Does Tactical Co-op for XCOM 2 actually work or should I not bother?
>>
>>170508159
Which game?
>>
>>170508159
It stuns for a turn if it connects. Basically just a ranged utility item. With perks it's actually pretty decent, but honestly you should probably be investing elsewhere.

>>170508168
I'd be curious as well, but since I never heard much past the initial announcement, I don't think much really happened with it.
>>
>>170508159
The arc thrower just stuns a target for two action points (1 turn) initially. Later, more advanced arc throwers can stun units for 3 or 4 action points (1.5 to 2 turns, respectively).

Reportedly speccing one or two assaults into the arc thrower tree can be beneficial, but I have not tried it myself. YMMV

So what other challenge runs exist for xcom EW besides like, one man army runs and ballistic runs?
>>
>>170508386
Snipers are super weak early game. Techincals start strong, but fall off. Rangers and gunners are good from the get go and ramp up. Assaults are strong early, and can deal big damage later. Specialsits are specialists. They have utility you need, so make them officers to go along with their utility theme. Since concealment is super strong, naturally Shinobi are as well. Gunners can actually take the role of primary damage dealers over rangers depending on the perks you take, and because rangers are actually usually not as mobile due to how light em up and timed missions interact.

>>170508541
One guy wanted to do a pure rookie run.
>>
>>170508386
Oh and I forgot grenadiers. Early game they are strong, then damage grenadiers kind of fall off, but then you get special nades and plasma nades and they are back to blowing everything up.
Support naders start kind of weak until they hit sting nades, at which point they become excellent. Usually you hit sting nades before special and plasma nades.
>>

>>
>>170509024
They show up on ADVENT retaliation missions. Pretty helpful actually, but no, you can't take them on tactical missions.

>if i take needle grenades am i basically locked out of the option to destroy cover?
I'm not sure. I want to say that with Plasma nades you would get some cover destruciton, but I don't actually have knowledge ot that. Early game, you certainly would as even sapper nades have trouble destroying most cover.
>>
>>170508386
Grenadiers were split into Grenadiers (duh) and Gunners

Rangers were split into Assaults and Shinobis

The new Rangers (in name only) serve a role similar to that of the infantry class from the original long war mod (if you played that).

Snipers are a lot weaker in the early game, mostly because you do a lot of timed missions. they really shine on supply raids and other timerless missions.

Grenades and other explosives are a lot weaker than the base game, and serve more of an AOE damage role.

>>170508719
>One guy wanted to do a pure rookie run.
I know that one guy made a pretty entertaining solo sniper run, I hope he does the same regarding the pure rookie run.

>>170509024
Compromised ADVENT MECs serve as defensive units for resistance havens in the region they are hacked in, and can be used to defend against retaliations.

Sapper is very very weak compared to the original long war rendition, and some players pass it up entirely in lieu of spamming flashbangs and smoke.

Being able to eliminate enemy cover on command from the very beginning is just a little bit broken. That is not to say that grenades are useless, but they don't completely level buildings anymore without perks.

Depends on the mission, supply raids and ambush troop columns you just do 0%. Other missions you can't afford to be bogged down due to turn timers and the ayys will start dropping reinforcements almost immediately if the infiltration is too low and it will take 5 turns to call the skyranger in.

In my playthroughs cheyenne is always immediately useful though, whereas most of the OTS cash kicks in in the lategame. On the other hand, cheyenne starts you off without enough power to build an uplink.

I agree that XCOM 2's weapons were too big. For a mobile guerrilla force you'd think they'd look for lighter and tighter weapons. Then there's that awful design for the gunner weapons. A kind of half LMG half minigun that looks terrible ergonomically. Imagine having to keep switching from its carry state to its fire state as you duck around a battlefield.

I still hope for a weapon model replacer that takes the original designs and just reduces the bulk. The modern gun imports are nice but they don't fit thematically with XCOM.

I prefer Cheyenne because it helps make a beeline for a steam vent. I build a thermal generator straight away and then the second after I get my allowance from the Council. This for me makes it so I don't have to worry about power requirements and can just start throwing up Labs and Uplinks.

Thermals are not a good earlygame investment. There's very little difference in the the price/power ratio for thermals and normal reactors. It's better to sink 120 on a reactor in march and then again in april, instead of paying all of it upfront in march, because early money is always more valuable.

The advantage of thermals is that they don't take as much space, so you kinda need them and eleriums when your base matures. And if you don't want to demolish stuff, there's a case to be made for building a thermal as your second or third reactor. But the first should always be a regular one.

58 shitter rookies are part of the game balance. You don't need good aim to throw grenades or pop smoke. Hell they might get good will and end up being useful psions later in the game. The solution to bad soldiers is not to buff everyone across the board.

Yeah sometimes you get an abysmal roster with 11 mob rookies a plenty, but you can just start another campaign.
>>
>>170547839
Would it make sense for Carter to be the founder/leader of EXALT? He wasn't particularly happy about being puppeted by an Ethereal.

Fuck
>>
>>
>>170555549

That's quite a funny bug.
>>
>>170558728
The shotgun pellets option has some more oddities too. It can be combined with high explosive or incendiary ammo, but instead of all the shots exploding only the main shot explodes and the rest of the pellets behave like bullets that don't explode and do the HE or incendiary damage type.

If an openxcom dev is reading this pls no fix unless it's possible to make it an option for all the shots to behave normally and explode individually, my mod needs a way to have upgraded incendiary ammo that does actual damage
>>
>>170555549
forgive me but why would you do that?
>>
>>170561804
I have no idea why it works like that. An another bug it atleast used to have and I haven't tested yet is that if you have a weapon that fires in an arc and you give it auto shot, and you target it at a roof and the tile that was targeted is destroyed by the shots it'll stop shooting even if there's still autoshots left. It's also hardcoded so only some damage types can be set to explode in an aoe and incendiary explosion damage can't be changed.

All the fucked up stuff are things that weren't in the original game like shotguns are a modding option added in OXC only, so they might be spaghetti code they don't bother fixing.

After being rooted out, the members either disappeared or joined local resistance movements.

I think the concept that the rogue ethereal is attached to the Commander and he doesn't know it (hence why he's so good, hence why he can survive being a tactical computer for 20 years, hence why he can control the AVATAR) makes perfect sense and is consistent with muh lore. 0% infiltration gets pretty crazy. If only LW2 had more of this and less of 8 turn sneak to objective. Though I guess this took more time than all the missions before it put together, in that way it evens out I suppose.

Mistakes included breaking shinobi concealment too soon, I underestimated how many pods the map would have. Broke it to clean up the fourth pod while there were two more on the map.
In the same mindset, I used my one rocket way too early. Was kicking myself on about three different occasions. Got good flamethrower uses though, my tactical was most damage dealt.
Really regretted not having death from above and a stock on my sharpshooter, holo is just not good this early, the extra hit rate would have given me some really clutch shots. Lesson learned, gonna hire a German sharpshooter for the next one, German sharpshooters never let me down in LW1, looking forward to it.
Having only one medkit was a mistake as well. My technical somehow set herself on fire when using her flamethrower and I had to use it on that. Then the last viper pod poisoned my shinobi. Yikes. Vipers should be my wake up call to get some medic specialists trained up, all of mine are hackers right now.

I actually do know about how Iran handles it, but my main issue was how they were portrayed as having an extreme version of an Indian style caste system, to the point where most just went by the title of their role in the society, like Sten in the original. There was basically no way to change caste other than being branded a mage, and they were autistic about their honor and role. So the idea that their society in general would somehow be ok with someone changing what's basically their role in society was stupid. Plus what >>170652625 said about it feeling super shoehorned. But that's just my opinion, and this is XCOM general, so w/e I guess.
>>170652078

I've never played a DA game, so I'm out of my depth here. But the Iran tidbit is just something I've always found fascinating, and seemed to fit based on what anon was saying about Qunari in >>170651874. I could theoretically see gender be a non-issue in a rigid caste system by the way, as long as castes aren't influenced by gendered constructs and switching genders/fluidity/sexuality whatever doesn't change your role in the society. But as you said, this is XCG, so feel free to break off this discussion if you want
