So what's your canon about Chara's real personality? Demon or Misunderstood?

Mine
Hated their village. Their time with Gotes was the first time they felt loved and they truly reciprocated. The stories they heard about the imprisonment inspired them to kill two birds with one stone, but ultimately their hatred of the village won out over their love for monsters. This was primarily about revenge rather than liberation, and it wouldn't stop at six souls. Asriel sensed this hatred when the humans found him and this spurred him to assume direct control.

What Chara is after death depends entirely on what Frisk does. Either the bonds they forged help Chara realise the problem with their plan and outlook, or they feel increasingly justified in punishing this world, especially that little weed that betrayed them.

Sounds fair. Possibly the only thing I'd change is that I think that due to whatever the hell turned them against their village, left Chara naturally predisposed towards violence. Alive, this manifested in being harsh towards Asriel (probably still loved him like a sibling but that's not the point here), and during the game as a subtle approval of being violent in general.

Your best friend forces you to basically kill them, they steal your body and the first thing they do when any human gets near is want to kill them? It's easy to draw an overbroad conclusion from that, even if Chara was only ever going to attack the village.

I never really understood how that idea came to be. If Asriel's line was just "Chara hated humanity", I may have bought it as well, if it weren't for him also saying that not only did they feel very strongly about it, but also that they never talked about the reason. This always suggested to me that they may have had minor outbursts regarding the topic, but never went into detail.

I like it when people try to look at this as well, along with the idea that Chara may have been very self-serving with their decision. After all, nobody asked them for a sacrifice, nobody even suggested it, they just up and decided to do this. Like a lot of ideas, I think there's lotsa ways to make it complex, people just rarely manage to exploit it right.
