Anyone know why the second script would be copying the same screen as the first script?

Does application_surface not update view coordinates until the end of events or something?

Basically what you said. Redrawing the application surface only happens once per frame, during the Draw events.

>>
>>169940230
>>169940829
Expanding on this, if you're essentially trying to copy different viewports to surfaces, you might have more luck with view_surface_id? I don't use this function, but I think it may accomplish what you're wanting

Oh my fuck I didn't realize there was a larger application_surface reference than the global variable.

are the any unityfags doing pixel art textures?
Is there any way to make the textures retain their hard edges (point filter on the texture) rather than blurring when it's blown up, but also still have antialias applied to the edges so it's not a rough pixel edge?

>"But anon, you forget that you're not a Dev, you haven't released a game since I know you, you told me you'll try to make small games already"

Fucking hell. He haven't created a single game related thing. I'm fully aware how dropping projects and blowing the scope up are my flaws, but he acts like I should drop gamedev altogether. He can't understand I like making games even if I don't finish them. I despise mentioning gamedev to him, he's always smug and points out how much of a failure I am.

So.. any tips of working within a small scope? How to make small games quickly? How to guarantee I'll stay in it to the finish and not jump ship ?
>>
>>169941047
yes to all

Some people try to deflect by pointing out that it's decompiled code which might excuse the use of 'this.' but decompiling doesn't magically create chained ifelse statements and strcmps
>>
>>169941238
Here's an even better deflection: He has a game and you're hatejerking over his code.
>>
>>169941047
No, he does not. He's even said himself he doesn't know how to code. All of that is from javascript which is then compiled to C# and then run in-engine. Also, it's just a giant Update() function. Which even Mike Z told him not to do but he does it anyway because he's a dumb fuck.
>>
>>169940991
>>169940829

I'm trying to create a zelda/megaman style screenscrolling effect when you enter a new room/reach the edge of the screen, etc.

I'm actually just messing with surfaces for the first time so this is new to me.
>>
>>169941093
Don't have a ton of experience with pixel art in Unity, but the best solution to that would probably be to use larger art assets and apply the effect you want to the texture itself, rather than trying to do it from within Unity.

If you really want to do it in-engine, then maybe it would be achievable with mipmaps? That's a wild guess on my part

>>169941503
On second thought, maybe there's a shader you could use to use one of those smoothing algorithms emulators sometimes use -- 2xsai, etc. I think those might give you the effect you want, which seems to be a smoothing of hard pixel edges, without adding the blurring caused by bilinear filtering.
>>

it's where you make a game about demo
>>
>>169941503
That's my guess too, and it's what I'm doing at the moment

It's just really weird having antialiased polygon edges while the mesh textures have zero aliasing, and turning off aliasing altogether doesn't seem like the right thing to do

>>169941685

>>
>>169941489
Yeah that's what I figured from reading your code. Surfaces are super handy, but also super volatile. Make sure that you have code to be sure that surfaces exist before you try to use them. You can do this per-use or one blanket code at the beginning of each step that checks to be sure all of the surfaces exist. If a player alt-tabs or switches to/from fullscreen (or if the GPU hates you in particular) the surfaces will get cleared from the video memory and have to be re-created, otherwise the game with crash.

view_surface_id basically assigns a view to a surface, so that view draws to the surface you specified, rather than the application surface, and since you can draw to surfaces from outside the Draw Event, this might help you out.

Exactly right. Even if you did have a game and even if you showed it and said who you are nobody would know or care. Yanderedev's old code which is about to be rewritten by a professional team and forgotten forever anyway while he makes millions of dollars is the last thing you should be concerned with.

You also shouldn't be concerned with "anime fetish" fags being "taken advantage of". Unless you're some kind of faggot SJW.
>>

>shaders are the one main area of gamedev I've never touched before though
Just go for it, you can do all kinds of cool shit with shaders.
>>
>>169941931
Love it.

Likelihood of it happening is slim to none but make it so if you let the thrusters get to mid screen before you blow them up they fire off covering that entire section of the screen and insta killing you (of course I don't know how your lives/continues system works so doing this might actually catch the player in a ridiculous situation they cannot recover from. Just throwing that out there regardless).

How is the physics of the movement done?

So the legs are connected at the knee via a hinge, and there's the weight of the body trying to bend them, but you have a force trying to straighten the legs.

How do you make the character walk? Just a series of forces / angular momentum applied to each joint?

I want to simulate real plane aerodynamics in a game world.

The plane can be completely customised, basically made of blocks kind of like minecraft, so having predetermined behaviour wouldn't work.

The only thing I can think of is to have the plane in a box of particles that it can fly through to simulate the air. The box moves with the plane, constantly being re positioned as the plane moves.

Could this be simpler / more efficient?
>>
>>169946570
No.
>>
>>169946570
It does not.
The variable int x will be given a location on the RAM with a hexadecimal value to locate it. Eg. CD6889
If you renamed this variable to personWithTheBigHatAndGlassesPositionInTheGameWorldx, it would still have the same hexadecimal value.

Use a naming convention that allows the code to be read easily. The game performance will not be effected.
Keep it as 1-3 words, 4 at a push.
>>
>>169946570
>game size

>performance
I don't think so

>>169946981
this seems wrong but I don't have the physics knowledge to be sure. seems to me that you should be able to approximate it well enough by calculating the general effect of air resistance/etc. on the wings rather than simulating all of the particles individually
>>
>>169946570
Technically: each char you type costs space to store so it does inflate game size. This only matters to you if you're worrying about the footprint of singular chars though which nearly nobody is.

The compiler does have to read each char before it attempts to locate the instruction/variable/etc you've labeled - but it does so with ridiculous speed. So, again, technically yes. Realistically nobody should care.

>>169954146
No, all you have to do is pay MS for a developer's account and publish the game to Xbox store, just like on Google Play. You can use a retail Xbox to test your game, and then just publish it to the store, no NDAs, negotiations, or dev kits required. The downside is no multiplayer, no achievements, and it has to be a UWP app. Also, there will be a separate section in the store for such games, so indie games will be separate from AAA titles.

then come the replies to the replies, if any, which usually smell like shitposting

No songs yet, I'm going to make it possible first to parse Stepmania maps and play them (without music). Adding music and music-based timing shouldn't be too hard since I have done a proof of concept of that before, there's just no point in adding it until there is something to match the music up with. I don't have or make music I could use for the game so I will make it possible to create your own maps, including import from existing formats.

>yeah spend the next couple of years making shitty little games you have no interest in
That sure is a tryhard attempt at dismissing hard work and experience.

Making a number of games is the only way to gain experience. If you want your dream game to be your first game you're just being impatient and setting yourself up to fail and even if by some miracle you do finish the game will be shit. You're better off making your dream game after reaching a certain threshold of skill and reputation.
>>
>>169963786
Except if you do small games which feature aspects of the larger game you want to make, it WILL take less time to make the game you want to make because you'll already have learned how to do each aspect individually from practice

I don't know, anon. In some ways, you guys are right, in some, you are not.

You can not just sit down saying, damn, I'll draw the Sistine Chapel because I feel like that's my artistic destiny, even though I haven't hold a pencil in my life. It doesn't work that way. With a small scoped yet fully finished game, you should learn: basic game loop, menu, settings, controls, camera etc. So on your next project, you already have this knowledge or tools, and you can expand them. Not to mention that if you commit yourself to a project so big that you'll only get results 2-3 years later, you are more likely to get demotivated in the process. However if you shit out something every 2-3 months, then it can give you the feeling of achievement and progression, which is good.

However I give you that that game dev is not like other art forms or creative hobbies. Game dev is software development. A project. You don't go to your workplace, saying, today I'm gonna do this small project so I can be prepared for a big one years later. No. The client wants something to be made, so you work your ass off until it's done. So if you have a project plan, a design document etc., you should be able to deliver the product if you have the skills to manufacture it.

>Making a number of games is the only way to gain experience

if somebody wants to make a RTS game, making Pong or Snake first isn't going help them one damn bit. Learning how to set up a camera in an engine for pong isn't any different than learning how to do it the very first time for the game you actually want to make.

finishing something doesn't magically level you up. you learn by doing, and you might as well be doing something you want to do.

usually the game you want to make has huge scope because the whole idea is "this game i like + something"
1)you will get demotivated by how far is your goal and how tiny is your progress i(complete the game)
2)team members will lose more and more interest in the game as the time pass by
3)you will find new obstacles you never faced before(no prior experience with engine for example) and slow things even more(go back to point 1)

basically you can argue jam/small games are useless because you have no interest in them well the secret is pick 3 different genres you like but with small scope so if you ever make it you already know what to develop after so you dont lose interest in devving

Not gonna convince either of you, but for anyone walking past this conversation:

The value in doing small games is two things:
1. To FINISH something, including all the little things that you don't really think about when starting a project: menus, settings, publishing.

2. If you're new to gamedev, it also teaches you about all the things that can go wrong in making a game. You COULD learn all that while making a big game too. But here's the thing: over the course of your big game's development, you'll end up rewriting your systems anyway, since you'll discover new and better ways to code during that time. Why not actually RELEASE games while you're learning?

3. It also gets your name out there. Getting a following is exponential growth, but you have to actually be doing things to get people's attention.

No need to make a ahitty puzzle game you're not into. But if your dream game is a big genre thing (RTS, RPG, ETC) think about making small scope games that explore one aspect of your genre, instead of fullsize games.

Nodev shitpost.

Yesterday night I said, after deving for an hour or two and going to bed. That tomorrow I'd dev for longer and make steady progress. Hours slipped away and all I did was play, living life frivolously, attending to my friends and family, and the immediate tempers of the day. Yet it's night again, and I'm alone looking at another wasted day, wasted hours before sleep, watching kitchen nightmares UK, watching people go hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt in order to run a restaurant. I'm sitting here watching a show, staring at my table in the dark, and its painful.

I got rid of swapping between left and right hand attacks manually, and just made it automatically pick which weapon does more damage. If you've got two weapons with different ranges then the ranges will be displayed using different shades of red.

This might seem like an obvious change, considering how clunky pressing a button before you attack to determine which weapon you use is, but there are reasons not to use the most damaging weapon. You might want to use a weapon with less damage but more stagger to break a spellcaster's concentration, for example. I guess that will just become part of the strategy of weapon picks.

Also added spears, the second weapon, to the game. They have different attack animations depending on whether the target is 1 or 2 tiles away, and they do 20% more damage if the target is 2 tiles away.

QUESTION

Would it be a good addition if I make the runestone (gameplay modifier) the player is currently using 'level up' with each playthrough, like a slight stat boost/starting with a certain item?
That way I think the player is more tempted to try out other runestones, and make the underpowered ones less horrible once the player levels it?
Adds a bit more replay value as well, but balancing issues as well since the standard mode would become a bit more obsolete.

Question for you guys

So, I've been exploring some options for how to do doors that are on the south-oriented walls, since with this perspective, you can't see the walls.

There's a couple ways I've seen it done in games with similar perspectives - one being indented areas representing doors, the other being semi-transparent doors.

However, I think the semi-transparent doors sort of kill the environment, and the indents I think would be easily passed over by some players.

My thought would be to do Option A - Similar to how Earthbound handles this perspective, you just sacrifice a bit of realism in the environments by having some awkward placement of doors. This way you always have visible, obvious doors, even if the placement doesn't quite make sense.

Any other suggestions as to how to accomplish this? Otherwise I think I'll just do A

If the walls are 2 tiles high, shouldn't more of the door be visible in B?

With this perspective, the bottom-border is implied to be the top of the wall, and there's the face of the wall that extends downwards that you can't see, as opposed to games like Earthbound where it's a cutaway.

I don't think I want to do flashing arrows, like Jurassic Park 2, since there's no HUD or anything, I think that'd look out of place

I want to tell you to read a book cover-to-cover, but people don't seem interested in doing that these days. That is honestly the best way to start, because you want a good baseline, but let's assume that you're uninterested and/or incapable of doing that.
Get a subscription to Lynda.com (if you're in college see if there's free access given) and do the essential training courses, or just torrent them. DO THE WORK; don't just watch or copy/paste. Typing is important. There are other educational course websites too. The reason why I DO NOT recommend youtube first, is because everyone can make youtube videos. You never know what you're getting. After you get a structured course by someone who actually knows what they're talking about, then go to youtube. Sebastian Lague's channel provides a lot of good little nuggets. Quil18 is okay too.
The problem is information overload - there's tons of ways to do things and tons of people who are going to tell you different things. Also you may run into problems where code from one project doesn't exactly work with code from another; this is especially a problem if you use multiple educational sources.
It won't be enough to make full games, but you really need to get a baseline for what acceptable game code looks like.

Also, you may want to learn all the important keybinds for your IDE (the thing you write code in), because it can really speed things up. If you use visual studio, get productivity power tools and configure it. Pinning tabs is really important if you have lots of source files.
Theres tons of tips and stuff I could convey to you, but not enough time.

I mean, there was a hotkey to swap between weapons, but it was still clunky. You had to look at a button to see if you were going to use your left hand or right hand weapon before you attacked.

As for why it's there at all - it just feels like a fantasy game should have dual wielding. It's a staple and it adds variety, otherwise the player just has to choose between twohanded weapons and sword-and-board.

Loli jam is still a retarded jam idea. The majority of this thread either doesn't want it or is just ignoring it so the arguments about it will stop shitting up the thread. Half of this thread doesn't even particularly like anime weeb shit. Fucking pick your audience/battles.

It's basically trying to make furry jam. Yes, you can probably scrape together a few furfags from /agdg/ here. But it's at best a limited niche theme that has nothing to do with gameplay or gamedev. Only nerds fucking obsessed and defined by their fringe interests and fetishes would be excited or inspired by such a theme.

You could've made your retarded loli games for any number of jam themes. On the off chance you actually fucking do anything besides shitpost and whine, nobody would give a shit if you just quietly made all your games with loli protagonists doing loli whatever.

The problem is, you not only want to be tolerated or politely ignored, you want all the attention on you and how much you like to jerk off to anime children, and you want everyone in the fucking thread to celebrate jerking off to anime children with you. Fucking stop.

Basically, pixel purists mistakenly believe the hardware limitations of the past is what made games in the past good, and view such limitations as desirable and necessary. They'd do well to heed the advice in this video on recreating what games felt like rather than their actual hardware limitations, and dropping things we've long since created solutions for, such as archaic death systems designed to eat non-existent quarters, and forcing all sprites to be 32x32 for no real reason but convention.

Me and Kada's game is a multiplayer FPS for the 3DS (plus PC port, and possibly Switch later down the line).
Basic networking is now in place, and you can move around and see other players.
Kada has to write some custom shader to make vertex colours work and stuff, so it still looks pretty ugly, though.

Personally, the game is a huge 9/10 for me. It's only not a 10/10 because of the poor technical optimization and the fact that the combat isn't as deep as DMC, but otherwise, Yoko Taro slam dunks it again and Platinum makes a three pointer on the gameplay. Pretty likely gonna be my game of the year, this year.

How does Unity compare to Unreal Engine these days?

The thing that has always dissuaded me from checking out Unreal is the fact that you need to know C++. Javascript is the only programming language I know, and it's obviously not nearly as low-level as C++. I have no idea about memory management, true OO-paradigms for programming, pointers, data-structures that aren't just part of the standard library, etc.

Which is why Unity seems more appealing with C#, a higher-level language, with greater abstraction. How does the performance between Unreal and Unity compare in this sense? Should any indie dev care about how close the language is running to the metal in this scenario anyway? Are these types of language-performance concerns more of an issue for triple-A devs that are trying to wring as much performance as they can out of the home consoles?

>>
>>169994274
Yeah, the story is actually quite good, but since you're likely unfamiliar with Taro or his games, the one thing you'll have to remember is to play the game multiple times(About 3, the games are usually short per playthrough so it's easy.) and upgrade all the weapons.

You don't need the first Nier to enjoy this one, but it'd help, however I'd simply recommend reading up, or watching an LP, or breakdown of the first title just to help you along since the gameplay in that ain't great.

Less performance though, by a pretty large factor.

It will be trivially easy to report the jam page as long as you continue calling it loli jam. Which you will. Because you don't care about videogames, you don't care about "little girls", you just want attention and controversy.

That's a lot of shit to say for an anonymous.

Why the fuck do you idiots need to brand loli jam as part of /agdg/ and discuss it here? Fuck off and make your own /lgg/ loli games general. Oh wait, it's because you know you'll get banned from 4chan and need to hide your garbage in another thread in order to shitpost about it for attention despite there being plenty of imgboards and communities that would happily accept you.

Pardon the shit quality of the .gif, not sure how else to record it. So, I'm using GameMaker and trying to do collisions between characters, but as in the .gif moving things get stuck on each other.

I just have a collision event for the taller sprite saying "if colliding with smaller sprite, set taller sprite speed to 0" which I'm not sure how to do otherwise. Tried adding larger collision masks and they just get stuck further out.

Any good resources for a more general collision system, or methods for doing this type of collision easier?

At least a generic weeb jam could have a lot of fun ideas. Like a joke DBZ powerup simulator where you just mash a button and try to power up faster than your opponents in a parody of fighting games. Or a joke about transformation sequences where enemies will just punch your shit in if you don't complete the animation in time before they reach you.

Anime is a broad concept and would be fun for non-weebs to parody while weebs can go nuts and make dumb JRPGs idk.

Loli at best will just be a bunch of moeblob protag random ganes that could go into any other jam easily. I think the only real loli-ish game content i've seen in this thread is that one witch modeler who just posts his one generic witch sprite with minor changes over and over and over. And at least he actually fucking does something instead of just shitpost with generic anime art stolen off boorus.

Question about Unity. How do I make frame perfect stuff in it? I want something to happen for exactly 1 frame in a 30fps game, I used targetframerate, but it is still updating in like 120 fps.

that's not what i meant. i don't care if you use unity or not. it's the stupid notion of fixed framerates and frame based logic that i'm talking about
>>
>>170000975
But how would I do that? I can't simply keep counting deltaTimes and update only when it reaches 1/30 seconds. I imagine this would eat a lot of processing power.

>>170001012
I want soething to happen for exactly 1 frame. And I don't want people with different computers experience different things, so I decided to fix a frame rate, but targetframerate is not doing it.

Variable frame rate and thus variable delta time can introduce a lot of non-determinism.

Unity has FixedUpdate for this but presumably anon can't get it to match his desired rate.

because it actually equals
child body = general attribute prevalent in children, therefore associated with children
sexual attraction to body type associated with children = sexual attraction to children's body
sexual attraction to children's body = rape

you have literally NO legs to stand on, because your women aren't just petite, they are actual kids too
>>
>>170001461

I have an idea for you all.

Why not make it a cute jam instead?

That way you can make your loli games but the theme is easier to swallow for everyone.
>>
>>170001843
By your logic
sexual attraction to drawings of womens = rape, too, y'know?
>>
>>170001589
Well, if you really want to know, it is for counters that moves exactly 1 pixel, so I need a way to make it so that the counters will always move at the same speed in different computers. If I use deltaTime, it would consume a lot of processing just checking if the time is right to update.

I know that there isn't a magical way to do that, but I imagined Unity would have an already optimized and native way to do that.
