What do you guys think about my idea:
We bundle up and make a game together, it could be just a few programmers and the rest makes art and whatnot and it could be in a simple engine like unity.
The idea would be to make it a pretty big game, like 60gb, and then release it as a torrent called GTA VI when the new gta comes out (or some other game).
It doesn't need to be complex, it could be just a collection of a bunch of shitty oc made by the community. As to why do it, no reason really, just to take a piss.
>>
>>169863090
>a simple engine like unity
Unity is a bloated mess no thanks
>>
>>169863202
who gives? It's a joke project. In any case, it can be any engine, as long it's simple enough for people to add things to it.
>>
>>169863090

>>
>>169862442
that game is just awful, why would you want to make anything like it?
>>
>>169863202
but that 20MB baseline will get us .03% of the way there!
>>
>>169862442
You know, I really appreciate what you're doing from a programming and gamedev standpoint, it's impressive and really cool.

But Jesus Christ, it doesn't matter how old, I don't think there is a game in the history of games with sound design as painful as this. It's like an audible version of the chinese water drop torture. I truly want to fucking kill myself after watching 5 minutes of this video.

But great fucking work for the rest, it's pretty cool.
>>
>>169863386
That's the spirit.

>>169863560
what do you suggest? I'm thinking Unity because it's easy to do things in it.

If we get enough people I'll make a discord.

I can't stop thinking about it because it seems to be using a system I had in mind for some time now, which is really nothing special anyway. But I need to have some visual creative output or I will die and i've chosen a damn long school path and for some reason that all means I desire to make a low-fi atmospheric first person action game and watching all the game dev has made me want to take a true wack at it.

>>
>>169863090
That does sound pretty fun! But I'd hope that we could get someone to convert 3DSMax/Maya/Blender files to the desired Unity asset files to make it easy for artists to spam the programmers with assets.

I realized why I had the physics friction turned off. When I started the project, before I had the pins in, I was launching the ball with a force between 10~30 and friction greater than .001 would stop the ball before it reached the end of the lane. So I set the lane to 0 and left it.

Of course, now that I have the pins in with proper mass, I launch the ball in a range of about 3000~8000.

I still need to do a lot of cleanup, but it already looks better, so thanks for the suggestion!

In the editor you can see mixels/rixels for a few effects but in the actual game there are none because I render at a fixed resolution. I also use custom collision detection in order to ensure collisions are per pixel rather than anywhere between.

The physics are pretty much fine now. Thank you for the criticism on their floatiness. They rotate in this webm but I might make them unable to do that, I'm not much of a fan of that.

>>169867289
No, the controls are generic 2d minecraft game controls, but I can see why you would think that. The reason I paused before moving in that webm is because the player couldn't fit into 1x1 gaps because they were like 2 px bigger than blocks, but that's fixed now.
>>
>>169867561
Thank you.
>>
>>169867579
Gotcha. The other thing is that your effects seem displeasing. Blocks don't really pop and instead just silently shrink down and slowly float towards the block beneath. You should maybe liven it up and have the itemized version either launch in a random direction (with low velocity so as to quickly be intercepted by gravity) or spawn in a random position within the tile.

I'd also remove the bounce effect and either have them come to rest or maybe have some sort of idling animation where they just spin in place or emit some smaller particles/glow.

As it is it is unsatisfying and a bit uncanny and discomforting. It seems so slow, which could be fine if you design it as such, but it does not pair well with the visual effects you have. If you can stomach it as is, more power to you, but I'd put it high on the priority list of things to polish when you get to that point.
>>
Give me realistic schoolgirl weapons for beating up people, anon. I'm running out of ideas.
>>
>>169868038
I sort of did that (see the webm in the post you're replying to) but I'll tweak it more. Currently the angle they are given force from is randomized in a genearl upward direction, but I can tighten the cone even more. I could deactivate the physics when they come to rest and then change it to floating animation as well, that might help.

What games compete with your game /agdg/?

What is your strategy to get the niche buyers to recommend your game to their friends that have been disenchanted by indie games?

How will you make sure the players have fun for long enough that they feel your game is a steal for its price?
>>
>>169868268
Yeah didn't catch the most recent .webm. Looks better. Still seems like a slow process in general. Is dig speed something that can be upgraded at the game goes on?

Could also maybe animate the blocks as they're breaking but that isn't really important right now either.

If you just try to make the best game you can, you sort of already solve the first two problems, don't you think?

The 3rd one can be solved by the side effect of just having a fun game. Alternatively you can add a lot of replayability which can come in many different forms depending on your game. Probably the most common is "New Game +"

>>

Yes, the player will have tools and be able to upgrade them. I don't know how yet, I'd rather not do the standard "iron -> diamond" thing all these games do but if I can't think of anything better that's what I'll stick with. I also plan on adding a "cracking block" animation at some point, yeah. I appreciate the prodding anyway, it's all stuff I need to think about.

I agree that making a good game solves all of those problems. Its more about just thinking about these topics. For example if your making a dark souls or elder scrolls clone (besides being horribly out of scope for small teams let alone indie devs) if you WERE making a game where you are trying to compete, high quality 3D graphics isn't one of the points that I'd try and take them on.

>1 man scope, this can be a bonus because it means the art, gameplay, worldbuilding, story etc is all coming from the same place so it should be able to remain consistent in theme.
>You can take thematic risks that they can't
>You can take mechanical risks that they can't
>People are more willing to let shittier graphics just be a trade off point for your game, expectations aren't as high
>Lower price point

Like these things are pretty obvious but its worth reminding yourself what the player expects you to do as an indie dev and why they are even taking the risk in buying your game. If you direct development towards your strengths instead of trying to cover up weaknesses that the consumer is willing to gloss over anyways then you can end up with a better game.

You implying I would ever share my secret sauce?
>How will you make sure the players have fun for long enough that they feel your game is a steal for its price?
The key to customer satisfaction is to have genuine fans who like you and will be pleased with whatever they play. If they have issues they will bring them up but spare you the dagger they otherwise pull on devs they are indifferent to.

In other words because I have done my legwork with gathering enough followers who are hyped for the game I don't need to worry about providing a AAA experience or anything close to it.

Explore our inner psyche, get the same kind of discomfort you get while reading Antigone or Crime and Punishment etc., face your inner demons while you also get something which helps you living and makes you look on the world in a different way.

But no. Fuck that. Fat shaming and other SJW bullcrap is where it is.

At times like this, I wish we would rather go back to the times where games were mindless entertainment and didn't act like a little kid who plays pretend as an artist before his parents, who know this is the biggest shit they have ever seen and the kid is on a long way to get to some level, but they still smile because they don't want to break him.

Even if you have shit code, have an overscoped idea for a first game, work on it for years without any results, BUT, you can manage to build up a fanbase around the idea and have some prototype to make more people interested, then there's a chance that you'll be able to make it.

So I guess idea guys do have a future.

Oh shit when did this happen? Just a week ago he was on the brink of snapping because he knew his code was shit but couldn't fix it without killing the hype and he wasn't willing to sign a deal that would involve an entire company of people getting half of the profit of his game
>>
>>169871473
So the idea of "making it" to you guys is just making money, whether or not you're even making games. As long as you're making money, you've "made it".

In that case, I made it bros. I still don't have a game but I got a job.

be fun and pander to furries

Speedrunner mode - time trials of all levels in a row with the menu navigation taken out
>>
>>169871605
It's been happening under the blanket since midway through February apparently. Also the deal is supposed to leave him with the full intellectual ownership of the game, which is pretty cool.
>>
>>169871693
So why the fuck did he make a video whining about how he'll have to hire programmers one week ago, which was AFTER he hired programmers? Why the fuck did he make that video at all when he had already solved the problem?
>>
>>169871758
I dunno, maybe I got the date wrong, or that might be a part of his 4D crowd-control strategies.
>>
>>169871649
I've said nothing like that.

By "make it" I meant to make your game a reality. He clearly admitted that he on his own is not capable of finishing Yandere Simulator. His prototype attracted a studio, which can make it for him, while he calls the game design shots. Thus: he will be able to see his game come to life. And not only that, but whit a studio behind him, he'll be able to gain more shilling powers to present his game to broader audiences.

Summary:
- have a finished game
- have people who actually play the game

This is what I've meant.

>What is your strategy to get the niche buyers to recommend your game to their friends that have been disenchanted by indie games?
I've already defeated Firefall, that's one less competitor I have to worry about.

>How will you make sure the players have fun for long enough that they feel your game is a steal for its price?
I will cut content from the game, release the game, then add the cut content slowly back in as free DLC. I just need to learn some C++ and watch some

sorry for the late response
most resource oversimplify the problems so are not usually very get
i use a complicated system with 5 cameras but it can be done with 2

first you have one camera that renders the game which you set to orthographic and set the size to your vertical height
you must set it to render to a render texture which is the native resolution for your game
with the second camera, you render a quad with that render texture on it
resize the quad in order to scale the pixels
set the final camera to only draw to a portion of the screen

here is some code for that last portion with the final camera and the quad

I gave my player hitbox sprite a blush to make it cuter while everything is still programmer art. Also, there are wood blocks and leaf blocks now which the player can walk in front of, destroy, and place solid versions of. This is noteworthy because it's the most complex behavior I've done yet and even though it's not much at all I'm still proud of it.
>>
>>169872502
oops i also need to mention that you should keep your camera and ideally all your sprites snapped to the pixel grid

if possible do not use built in physics for gameplay if your game is low resolution and instead use casting functionality to step colliders yourself while maintaining your own between-pixel buffer

parallax background movement should be done relative to the camera instead of the world in order to reduce jitter

I'm not sure what he's up to but Yanderedev is always scheming.

For example his entire series of videos complaining about the workload and how he couldn't afford and didn't want to start hiring help was all just a lead up to his poll where he asked the fans if they would be okay with him having a kickstarter. The options were like
>no don't start a kickstarter yet I don't care when or if the game is ever finished
>no don't start a kickstarter ever that is stupid you are already getting $5,000 a month
>yes start a kickstarter and make the game we want you to make
Then the video after that is

Well, he obviously can't let a large, stupid group of people take important decisions concerning his games. He also shouldn't cut them out of the process entirely, since his livelihood on his fanbase.

Tricking them into choosing the right option is the only logical, intelligent way to handle this situation.

I don't know what are the living conditions where he lives, but if he does not have to support a family, does not have any other hobbies, lives in a small place, then he should live as a king. Where I live I know I could gather at least 2-3 other people to work on the game with that cash.

Patreon is just a bigger money grab of a system than KickStarter.
>>
>>169872884
Here you go. My next goal is to make the player able to turn the logs into wood which will require a crafting table object or something. That'll be fun.

On a serious note, it's a different game. Dungetris looks like a single avatar game where you interact with things after you place the blocks. In this game the only interaction with the level is placement of blocks, everything else is automatic.
Combat is deterministic in this game.
Also the goal might be different? Not sure about that yet, but your goal might be to kill all the heroes.

I assume they're referring to the fact that the described template does not match the current "average American", thus is unsuitable to be used as the generic standard protagonist for most games as it has been till now. Even if they have a fair point, I still don't get them. They want to eradicate fascism from games, yet they also want to tell how a developer should express his idea? It makes no sense.

Aside from that, if it is an important part of the story, then he will be a white dude with working legs. I mean, look at Katawa Shojo. Disabilities are the main focus, thus having characters with disabilities makes sense. A game where it serves no purpose, I don't see the point to butcher a character just for the sake of it. If it's not the focus, like in an RPG where you can customize your character, then you probably have the option to make him look like however you want to. So they request also makes no sense from this regard.

I also wish there would be some old dudes. One of the banes of this industry is how young everyone is. There's no one to really learn from, there's no torch to pick up. We learn on our own and from each others, but it's like blind people leading each other.

So we'll see but maybe it will be good now.

so I set BCLK to 130

I'm a nodev, and I'm sick of it.
But I don't know what to use, I'm bad at art and scared of 3d.
I'm somewhat experienced in programming, have a few years of experience, mainy in Java and C/C++ and a bit of Caml, the best language of them all though not in gamedev. Could adapt easily to new languages, especially if they're OO.
Should I just go with some engine like Godot/Unity or try a framework like SDL or SFML, I don't hear much about those lately ?

This or just make a fucking game. Don't look at gamedev like you need to start with a 3 year project that's going to be a sell-able product.

This is probably one of the only creative fields where for some reason people expect to be able to become a professional (support themselves through the craft) with their first completed work. That's fucking insane.

>publishing your first creative writing project
>selling your first finished painting
>signing your first song

But for some reason people expect to jump into gamedev with a professional high quality product that people will want to buy. Go make a lot of shit until at some point people start wanting to play your shit.

There is an engine called Twine that does this, probably less cumbersome to use.
Also, you should add some text formatting, like underlining key words, or coloring them differently.
Maybe "Cozy Steve's Inn" is underlined/colored, and its a valid input, and inputting it gives a short description of it.

>>169881839
Thanks, I'll try and finish this game within some sort of reasonable time frame.

I don't like the universal parsing in most text adventure engines. The [A] or "A" for assets and Stats simply displays the modifiers this adds to this choice during character creation. I'd rather figure out how to write and format the window/input so that its not confusing to use, than add text formatting to make up for those things.

I'd rather just add [K] for keywords that brings you to a screen that lists all the keywords with a description textblock.

They're doing a major update right now that will break compatibility with old versions, so no. It isn't stable enough.
>>
>>169882660
It's in a weird place right now, like the other anon said they're in the middle of a big update, which is still probably 2 month away. So it might be better to wait for that before starting a major project.

If you want you can still use Godot 2.1 to learn the engine. Scripting isn't going to be changing much at all, it's mostly just names that are changing. And Godot does have good performance, better than GM in most cases. Godot 3.0 does have better performance than 2.1 as well.

Alright, don't play it then. I don't like text adventures either, I'm trying to make a game I'd like playing, and experimenting with what I think roleplaying games should do, and what is actually the important draw of the genre.

I can't compete graphically with high budget RPG's, and I'm not confident in my ability to create a 2D RPG that looks distinct enough and consistent enough to not look like shit. Aside from that I have serious missgivings on whether visual art is actually necessary or helpful within a roleplaying game.

Any asset that takes reasonable time to make, should be re-used, preferably programmatically. However re-using assets and scenarios is something you only see in video game RPG's, which is a genre that extends beyond video games.

Since RPG's extend beyond video games we can assume the reason to play them, is not directly related to something that provided by a computer. I want to try making RPG's that utilize the assets of a computer in a way that aligns with the needs of the genre (math, tables, generation), while sticking to a format of input, display, and content creation that allows me to try and deliver what I think the genre should deliver.

I can't reasonably create an immersive open world of hand made content. However I can create a plot for a specific cast of characters and scenes, that can play out in a non-linear order, with a semi-"open-world" that fits within the concrete scope of the adventure.

I can create adventures, specific to characters and locations, like old D&D adventures, that can be played in a single setting that have a lot of variance and choice, and that use a familiar yet specifically designed roleplaying ruleset that I can alter for the adventure.

But this is all prototype and theory until I actually finish a game with these requirements. I've only made shitty newgrounds tier games before.

As soon as you gain one, people will start shitting on you. Whether that identity is because you namefag, trip, or just because you're recognised some place else other than here - as soon as people can put a personality to the posts you make and you're not just another anon it's all over.

AGDG and 4chan are great for getting genuine criticism of your game because people aren't afraid to shit on the negative aspects - you won't get that anywhere else. Everywhere else people are too civil, nice, and friendly.

True, but there are a lot of people in more "civil" places who mistake constructive criticism for being an asshole.
>>
>>169887787
its the most civil and well constructed criticism that hits home the hardest anyway

someone saying "its shit" is easy to ignore

someone writing an essay skillfully pointing out exactly why you're shit in a multitude of ways isnt
>>
>>169864701
>the instant request is invalid or has expired
>>
>>169887787
Its entirely possible to give genuine criticism of something while being entirely civil, sure. However, in my experience, being civil about the problems with someone's work usually results in that criticism being filtered out. Being direct and harsh sticks with most people more than wrapping it up in pretty words.

I'm using standard .txt output for storing level information, but it's become verbose with a check for class type on each line read: if the first character is D: write the following to a new d class, rather than an A one.

Does xml alleviate this or is it just inherent? I know one bool expression, even two hundred times isn't much per level load, but still.

i dont know which is faster in your specific case but xml is generally slow
if you have a yaml library you can quickly grab then use that but otherwise xml is probably better than a custom format
you can always process the files before building and convert them into a binary format anyway

Worked for the last week and a half on a little project for school that tries to find the most efficient wing given specific conditions and a few limited parameters to tweak and some 1.5k different airfoils. This usually means having to deconstruct an empty compliment sandwich or having to dive through layers of kind but misguided wording. People on the nicer sides of the internet have become terrified of any kind of negativity. It's frustrating and draining.

4chan is sometimes a bit ornery for my tastes but there's a reason I come here rather than go elsewhere. The feedback is just better when you get it because whatever it says it comes from a place of honesty, even if they're just trying to honestly be an arsehole. It is then up to me to decide what I can take onboard and what I can dismiss, rather than a moderator or babysitter. I don't mind how something is phrased if the criticism has merit.

That being said I do wish /agdg/ was a bit more like other creative communities on 4chan. There's one too many pretentious asshole who thinks he can talk down to people for being 'nodevs' because he finished a tutorial on unity.

well, there is. Individually, you can focus more on progress posts to provide a minimal tendency for that preference. I like to think that it works.

I was afraid of that. Are there any fonts in particular you find easy on the eyes? Or is there a part of the current font that you can say you dislike/is off putting? I am hoping to get some time before the demo drops to modify the font more but there is probably a 50% chance it might go out like this but in all caps form unless I do snag a free one.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply! It helps a lot!
>>
>>169893617
Not really. It's easy to respond to a shitpost, it's easy to produce a shitpost. It's more time consuming to post feedback, it's more time consuming to post progress. Just because there are a lot of shitposts flying around doesn't mean progress isn't getting feedback when relevant. A shitposter can still post feedback in another post.

Not only that but this thread simply couldn't survive if people only ever posted when progress was made, get real.

more rather, the requirements of a 3d engine will always be more intense, regardless what you do with it.
With 2D games, I expect them to run on a toaster. I understand that won't always be the case, but I can't break my expectation. If I'm running it on a toaster and it barely functions because it's using a 3d engine for a 2d game, OF COURSE it's that the toaster isn't powerful enough. I just can't gett it out of my head that, "but it's just 2d. why won't it run well?""

This. You can get constructive feedback everywhere. Keyword is constructive.

If you want anons on 4chan to tell you that your game is shit because rixels engine of choice theme of choice art style, your game being too similar to another game etc. It's all bullshit feedback worth nothing coming from an anonymous source.

Usually the feedback here is from a miserable nodev for whom giving feedback to gamedevs is how he justifies all his time spent here and justifies calling himself a "gamedev" even though he doesn't make games.

it keeps your data stored and backed up on a remote location.

it makes working with other people easier - be it an artist, programmer, musicbro or an ideaguy. With it, they can always access the hot code any other previous version.

version control lets one develop new features without having to fear fucking something major up in code and having to redo everything - one can just roll back to a previous version.

the branching system lets a whole team work on many different things at the same time. you can usually post bugs and postulate issues. Some version controls also feature a private wiki and/or forum for each project.

It automates all the above as much as it can.

--------

why you should learn this? You should learn it if you ever want to work with more people than yourself. If you don't ever plan on stop being a one-man-army then you can accomplish everything else without a dedicated version control program aswell.

>>169907583

Any way to fix this issue with my brain?
Like, I always see performance and memory usage as the most important thing to manage in a game, even if the game has low poly graphics,
So i tend to make overly complicated shit to handle the assets, (or anything else) perfectly, even if loading every assets doesn't not take much space.

I want to make games ffs,
why do I have to be like this ?
>>
>>169910578
Believe that perfection can be achieved through iteration. You can optimize performance and memory use once they become a problem.

for people like you, jams are the jazz
-make a game with limited deadline.
-often times not enough time to optimize everything.
-forces you to plan a schedule and stick to it ("hmm, I was supposed to implement X by this event evening, better stop optimizing this now and get onto it)
-not commited overly long to it so very little commitment stress
-its a jam so no one or almost no one will play it so its alright if it turns out shit

This isn't about video games directly, but I think it has a good take away for yesdevs, maybe some of you will find it interesting.

Basically, force your players to think while playing your game. Although, one thing to keep in mind that the video doesn't cover (because it's not about video games) is that people relax while playing games, so making them really difficult cognitively or difficult for reation times, may not be a good choice. So consider if you want some people to play your game after working a long ass shift at a dead end job. Even if you take that into account, I still think there's a lot of things indie devs (hopefully AAA devs, too) can do to keep games chill while keeping players focused and thinking.

GMS image_index is returning floats instead of integers for me, anyone ever encounter a problem like this? I have no idea what's going on.
>>
>>169910578
I do it this way:

Perfection can not be achieved, because it does not exist. However a given goal can be met. Set yourself a goal: make a game. Make your game loop run smoothly in that fraction of a second on a given set of hardware. No one will brag if it won't run on +2k FPS, and also no one will care if it won't run on Windows XP with 512 MB ram.

Make yourself a list like this. If your game meet these standards, then your code fulfills its purpose.
>>
>>169911467
>I HAVE to work on it because anyway, i'll work on it sooner or later
Will you? In my experience, writing extra code to support some far-future plan is a waste of time. By the time the future rolls around, I've usually changed the plan enough that the code I wrote in anticipation is no longer useful.

just know that you can do that stuff later
remember that you're deving a game. what thing can you do that will make the most progress in your game, what step can you take that will be the most productive? at the start, the answer to this kind of question will usually be some kind of big, unoptimized, placeholder. like putting in a menu and fail state or something. doesn't really matter if the feature is good, just matters that it's there. it's much more efficient to establish all the elements of your game in a crappy way, then iterate and improve everything in passes later.
the optimization that matters the most, in my opinion, is easiness of work. sometimes you need to spend time to reorganize and plan some things, cut out pointless stuff, etc. i just recently deleted a bunch of placeholders i still had but wasn't using anymore, and reorganized all my project folders. and god DAMN my project's easier to work on now

Instead of arbitrarily saying "no you can't take that", let them take it but have a potential penalty for weight then.
>>
>>169912762
You're thinking about it wrong. Instead of making the player incapable of picking it up because the character doesn't know, and it would burden them, make the player not want to pick it up because they don't know that they need to, and it would burden them.

i've wondered about this sort of thing myself. but i don't think it would work well.
instead i think the puzzles/levels should be designed so that the player will more likely encounter the puzzle items after they've encountered the puzzle itself.
i actually experienced this last night, playing the thief mission "return to the cathedral". if anyone knows this mission, i didn't get the eye at first and went around back and completely explored the cloister. i ended up getting all of the items brother murus' ghost would ask me to, before i even knew i needed them. well, actually, while exploring i found some hammerite writings about the consecration ritual and realized that the items i found could be used for that. i thought i would be doing it for the corpses i found in the cathedral though, which i suppose isn't too far from the truth. but then when i did get the eye and meet brother murus, i only had to get the candle. i had even put the other corpses in their graves by then.

I don't know how to really make a videogame, but I did take a class learning Python and C++. Here are some videogame ideas, please tell me if they are good or not:
1. Party based classic RPG in which your party members age instead of gaining levels. The older they get, the worse they are at acquiring stats, and when they get too old they die, forcing you to acquire younger party members.
2. A 3D action game in which you play as a skeleton. Getting hurt makes you lose bones, and killing enemies lets you take their bones. If you acquire enough bones you become a horrible bone beast.
3. Cold war era VN/Dating sim in which you play as a femme fatale spy, and must seduce and murder people around you in order to acquire government secrets.
Are any of these ideas good, or even feasible to make as one person over the course of a couple of years?

I was coming here to post about my game, but now I'm so angry I can't do anything than finding a way to shit on all those SJWs who infest the video game industry.
In those threads I can even see the names of people I hate who were complete SJW retards a few years ago when I met them, and who are still complete SJW retards but now they have "power" and "influence" on other devs.

I should calm down and go back working on my game but it's too late.

Core gameplay is 3rd person gtalike. But you can slot literally anything into that. Even a 2d game could be included, since unity can load arbitrary scenes, or render them on a quad.

The first leaves looked too detailed but they are superior to the second because those flowers are dicots as opposed to monocots.

Dicot flowers have petals in fours or fices, monocots in threes, monocots have paralel veins in their leaves, dicots have netlike veins.

sorry for the autism this is in my field of study.

I have a question.

Imagine an RTS. You watch the world from birds eye view. The world is 3D, yet there's the mouse cursor. How should it be displayed and handled? Is it also an element of the 3D world, floating above the terrain? Or is it in its own orthogonal space (the window's coordinate system)? Or is the mix of the two is the best? So you have the 2D mouse, but you also have a tiny dot or something following it in game space? What do you say?

First bit of progress to report for today has to do with guns.

First, I've reimplemented the ML xCal aiming reticle as "the main reticle" for this game. Because it's procedural and supports any arbitrary amount of ammunition, it'll probably be used for most weapons that use ammo, though I can conceive of allowing a per-gun texture mask to change the shape of the ammo ring somewhat.

Also, I've got a new asset relevant to level 1, which is the Bullseye Bridge; shoot the target and the bridge drops, opening a path. This is a state saved in the game when the level is reloaded; the point of the bridge is mostly to act as a progress gate which you need to unlock gun use to pass. Well, the first bridge will be a little bit different (it will start in a partially-dropped state and Dixie will have to pull a stuck sword out of the lever; this one is a really simple progress gate for collecting weapons in general). But the rest of them are just there as move-unlock checkpoints and really minor aiming challenges.

Also some updates to gun mechanics; the 2D aiming is now way less squirrely, the gun has a lerp'd kickback on the reticle when you shoot, and aiming now progresses outward FROM the reticle which means you won't shoot bullets backward into objects behind Dixie if the cursor falls on them.
>>
>>169921728
I wouldn't call it "unwrapping the sculpting", but essentially yes. Also if you poly paint a subdivided obj you can export a texture that will work on the lowres model. That's different than normals though.

So I decided I got nothing else to do with all my free time, I've never really developed before but I'm willing to take time to learn. I plan to do a top down RPG very similiar to the original Zeldas with 3D enviroments (probably going for low-poly look since it seems easier) and 2D sprites for characters. So I just started and I never used a developing engine before. Which would be easier to start off with and better in the long run, Unity or UE4? If you have any other suggestions on what to use I'll be listening.

>>
>>169927869
I assume you're using a transparent .png with a few dozen particles as the background?

However, if you can afford the additional computational cost, I would have each star/rock as its own object. Randomise the speed, and reduce the size of the texture inversely proportional to the speed, (or just randomise the speed)
>>
I just downloaded Unreal 4. Where do I start on the journy to making game?
>>
>>169928736
Yes, it is harder, even if you understand the math.

And it's not only that, but it has some pretty tedious parts.

And 3D real time collision detection…

And your own animation and model handling methods…

It's fun, nevertheless.
>>
>>169928995
That's the reason I was leaning more towards Unity rather than UE4, it just seemed easier to start out on. I might start leaning more towards UE4 if I could learn it if I put the time and effort into it though.

What? No, there's little difference when it comes to doing the optimization itself between 2D and 3D. In 3D you are generally pushing the hardware a lot harder and thus need more optimization overall that you can get away without in 2D, especially when it comes to rendering since 3D rendering is much more involved.

Which would be the most optimal way to do it?
A: All walls are separate pieces of different lengths
B: The whole building is split into equally sized squares that can be used as a puzzle.
C: Each 'floor' is it's own separate piece, there'd be 45 of these.
