The amount wasn't the issue at all. The issue was that you have a consumable that gives effect 1+has a separate spawn rate AND another separate feature+separate spawn rate that gives the same effect 1. That's stupid and unnecessary given how much ?teles you already get per game. Spawn rate of ?teles were buffed as compensation but the point here is that the screenshot had an unbuffed spawn rate and yet he already has 33 (thirty-three). Even getting a surplus of 20 is already too much, this means that the ?tele spawn rate buff was completely unnecessary.

There are important differences in how they function though. Reading tele is affected by one mutation, and zapping tele is affected by a different one. Zapping tele also cannot be silenced. So removing wand of tele would not just be bloat removal, but a significant addition to danger.

Also they have already removed the most plentiful source of tele, the evocable ring. As much teleporting as you can eat for. If you were undead or know lich form, then infinite teleporting. So, they have already moved the number of teleports you can have from infinite to finite. That means they have already infinitely nerfed teleport. That means leave tele alone!

Can't say I disagree with most of their cuts.

Mountain Dwarf - redundant
Sludge Elf - redundant
High Elf - questionable

Stalker - was shitty thematically, now they just need to remove potions of draining and excise the last dregs
All them Zealots - good riddance. Should get rid of Berserkers and Chaos Knights as well.

Replace Fireball with Iceblast - non change
Remove wand of magic dart - redundant with flame
Remove cold/fire/draining - why do we need every elemental damage type for bolt wands?
Remove invis/haste/hw/tp - good, they were unnecessary crutches.
Remove slowing - redundant with confusion, they serve the same purpose

Revamp evocables - Rods were stupid strong if you found them early. New evocables are much more balanced and less spammy.

Remove badpots - they just need to get rid of the last one. badpots were a bad idea and they only stuck around as long as they did because of Stalker

Almalgamated enchant weapon scrolls, removed curse item scrolls - enchant failure was stupid, curse item scrolls were largely meaningless. They should get rid of random uselessness as well.

remove racial weapons - again mostly meaningless flavour that rarely affected weapon choice.

removed spiked flails, ankus, and a couple redundant weapons. replaced random weapon names with slightly different numbers with genuine weapon type variation. sound good to me

What great sin have the devs actually committed? The game is more challenging, takes less, time, is more streamlined, has more real variation in weapons/spells, and is no less fair than it was in the past.

I'd say that the older game was tougher. Although, speaking of item destruction, I think that was one a thing that made wands of hw/tele/haste very valuable, that they were indestructable. Now that there's no item destruction, there is less reason for them to exist.

Another thought is that if they thought haste was too powerful (which it was) and they took out the spell, then they should just take out the charms school. What charms spell would someone want past XL10?

the ones that I play with that are different from the defaults you show there are:
easy_id, easy_lore, ironman_quests, half_fixedarts, and turn off enable_virtues

However, half_fixedarts is more for when you've already seen and gotten sick of the standard artifacts. Virtues are flavorful and cute but really message spammy, which is why most turn them off. No_wilderness is good for a pure dungeon divey game but personally I like multiple dungeons and having an overworld, even if in the long run the game takes longer.

Using your brains = cheesy scummy playing. Scummy playing is not the same as no-brain playing, often it is the opposite. Teleporting in a bad situation is a no-brainer choice, but keeping a pet shadow imp from D5 to the end of Lair in order to grind animated corpses for TSO piety is not a no-brainer choice. Sadly, the devs took that away, shadow imps don't know animate corpse anymore. Keeping a pet adder through lair so that you can bottleneck a hydra behind it and keep the hydra raging in conjured flame while that poop adder bites at you was fun too, but the devs took that away when they made non-similar monsters able to swap places. Lots of summons shenanigans went out the window too.

Now the only way to play is brainlessly. Less and less shenanigans, just straight fights where your stats either match up or they don't.

Why can't my gameplay choices in some instances be very largely affected by equipment drops? Why can't a MuNe of Kiku have a piss easy time in Tomb, why did they have to add so much holy shit? Why can't some parts of the game be really easy for certain combos and other parts be really hard?

What exactly is the vision that the devs are trying to exact into reality?

eh the pet shadow imp piety farming specifically is definitely a no brainer once you figure it out or hear about it, in that it's just easier and better than not doing it. Cute trick that's neat to learn about? Absolutely. But once you know about it, there's no reason to not use it for every character able to benefit from it which in turn warps game play and balance.

It's pretty dangerous, yeah. Maybe less so since it's the only(?) extended branch where you can stairdance, but it still has dangerous moments.

If you can't quickly deal out a ton of damage to a wide range of enemies (via summons, AoE spells, invocations, or otherwise) then the difficulty ramps up pretty considerably. But, again, you can stairdance the most dangerous areas -- the first entrance to Tomb:2, the second entrance to Tomb:1, and the entrance to Tomb:3.

Maces crosstrain with Axes, so Axes are still good to use as main weapons. And Axes are great for dealing with popcorn.

But with 0 aptitude for both Axes and M&F, you might be better off with Maces, since they require less skill to get to mindelay.

not really. Mechanically it's about the same as *bands but has much more content. IF you've ever played any *bands it's not complex at all and you'll be able to clear stronghold within your first few characters.

Regeneration is always increasing your health gained over time BUT the effect only kicks in some turns after equipping the amulet, so you can't juggle amulets midfight for regeneration. Same effect for the mana regeneration and gourmand amulets.

From my experience you're better off dumping everything on STR to mitigate armor encumbrance on a tabber and relying on skills and echantment levels for accuracy and evasion.

Raising Str on levelups is only useful (arguably) if you somehow happen to find early gold dragon scales or crystal plate armor - you know, the heaviest stuff. Minotaurs and other melee-oriented races should generally go for Dex on levelups.

Item destruction vs. the vastly reduced exp and much more difficult mid game(7 levels lopped off depths/dungeon, 2 off Lair, 3 off Orc, 3 off Vaults).

Plus the Lair rune branches are harder than ever with the addition of Shock Serpents to Snake and the addition of Shoals and Spider.

Tomb being easier isn't really a big deal, people still skip Elf 3 in most 3 rune games, and while Gehenna and Cocytus are probably easier(though Shard Shrikes in Cocytus are murder), Tartarus is now probably harder than ever with Shadow Fiends being buffed and the addition of Doom Hounds.

But personally I think the extended game is still pretty sucky. Hells are interesting but ultimately most of the challenge is just Torment. Pan is mostly boredom outside dealing with Cerebov/Gloorx(I suppose Mnoleg isn't boring so much as completely fucking infuriating).

I've had strings of faults due to weird Dungeon encounters in those later floors. There's just a huge variety of things that can appear there that it's difficult to prepare.

That was kind of the problem though. The entire playstyle was based around randomly finding one of three rods(cloud/swarm/shadow) that could carry you through the game. You couldn't plan for it, but if you ended up getting one you basically won.

The only remaining "you win the game" item you can find early on is boots of running.

Replacing Rod of Clouds with Wand of Clouds was a great design decision. It still kicks ass. But now its a strategic resource instead of a "start every big fight with an Acid Cloud lol"

My point is, how is the current system better than the previous one. With the old one, you weren't able to use 2 teleports and cTele to get all 3 runes, and you certainly couldn't use it to get most of the extended game runes.

With the new system, you still can't, but you can still cblink onto the rune and random tele out. In the hell branches, you can just cblink through the bottom floor right on top of the rune and random tele out.

In either case, you're still screwed in Zot. So not much really changed, other than the removal of a fun utility evocation.

Just do things that please them (kill demons/undead, explore, etc.) and you'll get access to your high piety invocations again.

Immolation is addictive as hell.

I don't think it's too risky. If you have at least rF++ and have hasted yourself, you'll barely take damage between the guards and the flame. Wardens are usually 4-5 turns out of your LOS, so there's hardly any danger of getting trapped in the first rounds of explosions; if you see one sooner than that, just leave before they lock the stairs.

Shoals has wider range of deep threats, along with the ability for all those threats to come at you in a single instance.

Swamp is basically just strong melee monsters (assuming you have rPois or get swamp dragon scales from the first swamp dragon you see) and ghost crabs. These aren't non-threats, but they're a lot more predictable in nature.

Shoals, conversely, has:
1) Ranged melee threats in javelineers and satyr groups
2) Merfolk who, especially in the latter floors, exclusively use reaching weapons
3) Genuine magic threats from hard-hitting ice and water magic, due to aquamancers and uniquely Ilsuiw.
4) Its own heavy hitters, in the form of Cyclopses, occasionally Polyphemus, occasionally Krakens, and frequently alligator snapping turtles.
5) Merfolk sirens and dream sheep who, in a single turn, can make all of the above problems *significantly* worse.

To me, the key thing is that it's possible to do (and die in) Swamp as the first Lair branch, but all of the threats in Shoals pretty much necessitates that you do it after Snake/Spider. There's just no way you're going to have all the necessary defenses for Shoals by the time you first see it.

You can use it without entering the dungeon.
Only use I can really think of is if you recall out of a dangerous quest or dungeon boss level. You can read reset recall in town and change your recall level from dragonlair:72 to 71, etc

They also add random wild buffs whenever you hit shit with them. Every melee attack you have a chance to temporarily get short-duration invincibility, telepathy, lightspeed, resistance, etc etc.
But perhaps more importantly: there are items that boost your damage dice. That 1d30 weapon combined with the robe of the kamikaze warrior is 3d30. Throw Vilya on too and it's now 6d30. Hell of a lot more impressive than turning a 5d6 into a 10d6, right?

A rule of thumb:
1) Base damage is more important than almost every other number or brand associated with a weapon.

2) Multiplicative brands (which add around 33-50% more damage per attack) are basically meaningless on low damage weapons. These brands are flaming, freezing, vorpal, and holy wrath. Flat-based damage brands are better for weak weapons, since they add 8-to-20 damage for Electrocution or 1-to-Necromancy skill for Pain.

3) For slicing weapons, it's useful to carry a flaming version so that you can chop of Hydra heads with a weapon you're skilled with.

The hand axe might be too weak for even hydra-killing, though. But I'd still keep it in my inventory. I'd still definitely use the war axe over it for non-Hydra encounters.

Enchantment (the + signs associated with weapons and armor) is not great indicators of strength as it applies to weapons. A +3 hand axe doesn't actually deal 3 more damage -- it's more like it has a chance of dealing 0 to 3 more damage, which is basically nothing compared to your war axe.

The toughest lesson to learn is that artefacts (things that have more than one brand type) are frequently not worth the trouble. Some are absolutely great, but a lot of the randarts you find will be garbage. That hand axe is one such randart.

The thing about dazzling gaze is that I'm not sure it fits my theme. Madness glare would be more ideal, but that's waaaaay deeper into the tower. It doesn't even show up on mods until you get the tier 2s. Debuff cries last long enough that I don't think they even synergize with ego theft.

It appears that Gil-Galad doesn't *actually* have light resistance, but it displays as if the player "thinks" it has it because its base item (mirror shield) does.
If you sell it to a shop (or generate artifact spoilers), you can see its "true" stats, which don't mention light resistance at all.

Always remember that only casters are justified to use shit weapons like staves because of enhancer staves or you are playing a conduct run. Staves are the Slings of melee weapons while Maces/Flails is a veeeery close second if it weren't for some notable races like Gargoyles with good apts on it and a guaranteed holy brand on a random Sacred Scourge drop. low investment = low returns = low testosterone.

You don't really need spells for extended.

If you're playing 0.19 or newer, Lesser Beckoning is god-tier, but ultimately, it's not necessary. Same goes for Regen/Apportation/sButterflies. Admittedly, having some sort of Regen (via spell or amulet or whatever) is nice for Hell, but even with Zin's 50% blocking of Hell effects, you're going to be limited more so by the crap Hell throws at you than by needing 1-2 extra HP per turn.

You might be better off with a good randart plate armour.

Actually, if you're still here, what's your Strength at? Because the GDA might also be acceptable if your Strength is high enough.

But when you add multiple characters to control, it obviously crosses genres into something closer to turn based strategy.

IVAN and DDA are examples of occasional multiple actions per turn (due to time system), but even they do not allow turn-based-rpg style movement (5 squares per turn or something like that). If Invisible has that, that would make it obviously not a roguelike.

It only really violates permadeath when you can rely on being saved.

It's a problem when it means that death is no longer "real", not when it is a HP bar extension.
A HP bar extension or a "saving from death" state would be fine here. For example, Darkest Dungeon essentially has permadeath for characters, even if no permadeath for player (because dead team doesn't mean end of game).

For comparison, this is the best I could do with a weaponsmith (and it took literally all game to get enough essences to slay evil a stack of 99 arrows), though I think I was missing some of the rare archery gear like sniper gloves.

Looks like you only have +1.00 to extra shots, which is probably a big part of the damage difference. The real Archer class gets +2.00 just for being alive, and Ranger and Skillmaster get +1.50. Plus I have a ring with another +.75 on it, and +1.25 from my bow.

Although when you have to grind that much to get ammo and you don't even get a breakage chance reduction, I can see why you'd prefer going for extra might instead...

Pressing ? in-game will hopefully answer the many questions you might have. ?? gives the most commonly used keyboard commands, and ?/ gives a simple look-up menu.

1. Main websites:

2. /rlg/ pasta. See Individual Game Pastas > DCSS for the main tips. Even now, the game hasn't changed all too much and most of the info is correct.

3. Videos. The major ones on YouTube would be zxc (currently has one of the longest webtile winning streaks, although he hasn't played online in a while) and Demise (a speedrunner of the game and overall pretty decent).

As Demise says in some of his videos, while it's nice to hear their commentary, it's probably best to watch their gameplay with the speed at 50% so you can pay close attention to every decision they're making.
