I just walked into town and tanked 3 shocker brutes to the face at : stamina and 47 pain, took too long to kill a screecher, and had to slowly whittle away at the ensuing zombie horde with my 3 melee and 3 unarmed while wading through acidic zombies. The closest thing to damage I took was a few rips and tears on my leg pouches. And you lot still think Survivor gear and Rivtech is unbalanced.

I still fear bullets and explosions tho.

Well, let's take DCSS as an example

DCSS can be hard or easy, this depends on what class/race combo you pick and what kind of run are you trying to do.

For example, for your first run, let's say you do a three rune run with a MiBe, that shouldn't take too long to beat for the first time, it might take some time but not too long, then you try other easy classes like GrFi (which might be a bit too similar to MiBe) or SpEn, it shouldn't take too long to win a three rune run with those, and if you keep playing eventually you will be able to win consistently, but it's gonna take some time.

Now, if you decided to take another race/class combo, one that's harder, or try to do run with more runes other than three, or both, it's gonna be hard, and it's gonna take a long time to get a consistent winrate.

If we take something else, like nethack, it's similar, depends on what race/class combo you pick and if you decide to read all the spoilers or not. If you want to win you have to read them

I'm no Mummy/MuMo expert, but that doesn't seem too bad. The centaur is right next to you, so it won't shoot you. If the orc wizard doesn't have Slow, they'll mostly be a non-issue (except for Throw Flame).

The giant frog will be the most dangerous thing, pound for pound.

The orc had a trident of flaming, the wizard had puff of flame and the priest started smiting.
I used the frog as a meatshield while running away to save myself from the barrage of arrows but I had to resort to read-id'ing scrolls. After wasting a blink I got a fear, then went upstairs next to a double headed ogre I had parked there
I re-read blink without shame.
Died to hasted wizard and regular priest spamming magic dart and smite while I was trying to run away later on.
Still, losing a doubleclever mumo is a good thing.

About midway through Lair. TeFe.
I only have three means to kill anything:

fly, sticky flame, and dance around hoping I don't get whacked until the thing dies

retreat to choke point, conjure flame, and spam flame tongue until the thing dies

animate skeleton, inner flame, ta then retreat and hope it blows the thing up

Only other attack spells I have memorized are bolt of draining and magic dart. What does one do at this point? Sticky flame and dodge through the entire dungeon? Is it really the only way? It usually starts to become mana inefficient to kill things from this point.

Is there a typical progression route in CDDA? Playing for the first time, I notice there are bunkers and labs and stuff, but I've been mostly running around in an RV going from small town to small town, accumulating a horde of random crap. How energy works for Poschengband is that:
1. On action, energy-need is rolled. The amount of energy needed is determined via normal distribution ( the curves in image are probability densities of old sd vs. new sd. The new curve is the blue one ). Some actions have set energy-need ( ex. double attack of monks )
2. Creatures substract a value from energy-need determined by speed-to-energy-table. More speed, more energy is substracted.
3. When energy-need reaches 0 or less, creature gets a turn.

Basically it makes double/triple-turns less likely. That applies to players, too.
However, it is still random. Just bit more predictable.

Ok, let's talk about Elona, about the difficulty of the game, to be specific.

Elona has several difficulty levels, and the only one with forced permadeath is Inferno mode, I guess this means that Elona isn't really a roguelike unless you play Inferno, now, I'm not saying we shouldn't discuss Elona here, what I want to ask is, is there any point in actually playing on Inferno, or is it just a really frustrating experience?

From what I've heard, you could a lot of progress because of something you simply couldn't have prepared or known about, I have played *bands before so losing quite a bit of progress isn't something I'm unfamiliar with, but in Elona it seems really, really frustrating and unbalanced.

So, if I want to enjoy Elona, should I just play on one of the difficulty settings other than inferno?

Why not? Drive car to city, make trunk-on-wheels and go loot. Also you don't have to worry about zombies trashing your car.

That said, I have no idea if driving around cities is still viable to get your giant base across without having to navigate through the wrecks.

Not really. You can either scavenge gear speedrunning through towns dashing into shops and driving off or go the slow and steady route with craft chaining farming, sewing, and forging. Morale books and the occasional tussle without pulping so you can grind on them will make you a decent all-rounder. Either way you'll learn to nail wood boxes on for storage of anything you can get running or just make a cloth bike to hold essentials on the go.

Keep your eye open in fields for map extras to fish up mil and lab id's. Raid to hit libraries/mansions/schools for a full book set, strip gun stores, scavenge drugs, check tool drops for a full set. Salvage vehicle modules and solar panels as you go. You'll have to craft the forge, welding rig, and foodco buddy

Once you have computer's 6 - from books, solid armor, and some lab id's, go to a science lab. Open it up and root around, Extra bundle up and you can grenade or shoot a couple turrets until you get a surviving console to download the surface map. Then just bum from mansion to lab to hospital to fema camp to bank to gun store to lab to download more surface maps sucking up all the bits and bobs you want. Bunkers, you'll use 1 id to open the bunker then electrohack/smash the console, jackhammer the wall, or torch the metal door. If you don't mind dealing with them, an NPC to live in your vehicle as your crafting assistant helps once you have unlimited food.

Endgame is building your penismobile if you like to take everything with you, fish up a better armor list, hoard fur and wool for your ice lab diver set, install bionics, soft-max your combat skills with the memory banks, mutation roulette (if you want) until you get a decent set you can live with the bad ones in it, finish your armory spreadsheet or have solidified on what you're disassembling ammo into.

* A jackhammer lets you collapse roofs for oodles of nails for nailboard traps though sometimes you can get lucky with window smashing.

* Always have strong stimulants, strong painkillers, use them BEFORE it goes to shit, and always have at least 6 zombie pheramones to get away

* Later you'll make a foodco and just dehydrate whatever
* Can sealer and crafting empty canisters lets take stomachs of water and cans of soup on your loot run without an ~4 day cutoff to make it back.

Also, you can use throwing weapons like lawn darts to keep doing 30dmg way out to 25+ range with good str, throwing skill, and perception. Between that, holsters, and wearing shoulder strapped guns like a 9mm rifle or pneumatic bolt driver you can clear pretty far out then just drop them in time to scabbard your weapon of choice or draw one from your backpack if you have the time for it.

The five elemental ones are the strongest numerically, so are probably the best outside of crusade and death realms (which they can't take) or breath (where you want sound or at least shard breath).

This mostly matters for the mediocre realms like domination and craft where you get nothing early on, strong ones like armor can pick the wacky dragons.

Backtracking constantly is annoying to me. It's not too much fuss to setup a ways away, unfold a lootmobile, slap the solars and batteries on it then go use it for 2 weeks as I strip the place.

As a result, I have 5 or so spaces of patches, full toolset with spares for the scavenging, full set of guns with a couple replacements, spare ammo up the wingwang, full library and spare morale books, summer armor, winter armor, anti-gunfire armor, weapons with a couple replacements, spare weapon and armor sets for npc's, electronics gizmos, all the chems I need, plenty of charcoal, bough, 2x4's sticks, rocks, string, thread, rope and other bits, batteries and alternators awaiting disassembly, the folded lootmobile and its bits, spare tires, lots of spare metal, spare parts to patch, stash for drinks, permafood, mre/canned, couple container spots for holding and lugging, floor trunk of containers, couple stow/floor trunks for traps.

With maps I don't have to go into forests much either so it's not really a problem.

My Human Software Engineer is going pretty well now.
I managed to find two floppy disks of hacking, and I used a can of antimatter to secretly murder a shopkeeper in Robot Town so I could steal his coffee and canned brains for even more temporary programming skill.

With my sky-high programming ability I successfully removed the copy protection on floppy disks of identify, debugging, enhance armor, enhance weapon, and teleportation, and I still have 1 of my 2 hacking disks left.

Unfortunately I pissed off all of robot town by accidentally walking out of a different shop without paying for a $5 can of coffee or something. But since I now have infinite controlled teleports forever, that's not a huge issue...

Their description hints that there is SOME way to shoplift without them noticing/caring. Teleporting out sort of works but it still angers the shopkeeper bot. Stairscumming is the safest and less tedious scumming since just have to press < whenever you see a dangerous son of a h*ck and you can even evoke feet 7 (seven) tiles away. If there's a stairspawn sent beside you then press < and just look for another downstairs to scum.

This is why scrolls of noise, shouting and noisy spells are too good for this game. Just make noise at all 3 downstairs and its vicinity then press 5 to wait for the wandering freexps to pass by.

Yeah, I collect them. I use the simplified NPC needs mod. I have 5 right now. Cargo carriers are boardable already, I'm more considering whether or not to ditch my normal seats so I can add more cargo carriers. Maybe I'll keep one reclining seat for maximum comfort when I sleep? I'm just wondering whether it's a bad idea for any reason.

On the subject of NPCs, is there any way to control which limb they wear a splint on? 4 of my posse have at least one disabled limb, but last game I tried to fix that with splints the asshole just wore them both on the same arm, and I couldn't get him to take them off after it healed.

Classes dictate characters' playstyle, mostly.
While lot of them are really fun and have unique mechanics, they have to stick to their niche, so they cannot really branch out like in DCSS.
Races are like in DCSS, influencing gameplay, but not really dictating it. Tonberries get damage bonus at cost of having low amount of attacks / confusion vulnerability, androids level is determined by equipment etc.
Personality is just rather minor adjustment.

Bouncy ball is for stuff you don't want to be next to or want to kill fast. Once you can cast it for 1 mana, you can use it on everything.

Don't rush into enemies until you have that armor skill. Until then, 1v1 everything you aren't AoE-ing. And when you get the skill, you want to attack the strongest enemy so that once others die, you won't have a full hp giga nigga to finish off.

Torch generally on until you grind up stealth, but later on when you have huge mana just use shadowsight.

I didn't use plate much. Chain when torch on, leather when torch off. Plate when dying but unexhausted (this shouldn't happen much).

Stat distribution depends on luck. If you get nearest-10 regen (from spirit) early on, you can afford to go more melee. If you nab an early bouncyball, go high mana.
Do not go high stealth or spirit - those are pure support. You want spirit for the great abilities rather than resistance and stealth for midgame to endgame.
You don't need much defense unless you actually melee a lot. Get enough for abilities, then depending on your hp.

I usually play like this:

Any XP that you earn from killing monsters is applied to skill training and your XL equally. So, if you get 20 XP from killing a rat, 20 goes towards boosting your character's level and 20 is set for your skills. If you have multiple skills on, then that 20 gets divided up based on what you've selected.

And yes, killing monsters is the only way to get base XP, besides potions of experience.

Well, in terms of training multiple skills at the same time, it depends. It's usually best to train your main offensive skill (weapon skill for melee characters; either magic school or weapon skill depending on a mage character's setup) first and then try to train other skills.

For those other skills (Fighting, Armor, Dodging, maybe Shields, maybe Stealth, frequently Invocations), some people think it's OK to train them all at the same time; others think you should just do one at a time.

In terms of spreading skills out (as in, training multiple weapon types and multiple spell schools), it's rarely a good idea. Unless you're near the late game and can afford to change things up, it's best to train as few skills as possible. The times when you can afford switches are:

1) when you've reached min-delay with the best weapon of a given weapon class; thus, you don't need to train that skill anymore.
2) if you're wielding a shield, when you've trained Shields to the point where you have no shield penalty (you can technically train more for higher SH, but it's a lot of waste for little benefit)
3) when your spellpower/range/failure rate for your spells are at the points where you want them to be.
4) when you've maxed or nearly maxed out (skill level 27) your miscellaneous skills like Fighting.

Elven Cats give +Dex for units with Devouring. Level 1 Druids can summon Elven Cats once a day, for free, every day. Orcs have Devouring. So do the dragonkin lizards.

Librams of Hidden Secrets are normally pretty lame. However, if you give yourself see-invisible and nature-sight, temporary or not, reading a Libram will give you an extra feat instead of the two afore-mentioned qualities.

Did some more testing and I changed my mind. Ignoring everything but damage-per-turn:

Mage-Druids can pull out an extra, inherent +12-16 to-hit and damage whenever they want to, then cast Controlled Polymorph Self until achieving a form that can cast Skeletal Spikes on itself, or a form that has excellent natural attacks of its own. This can easily result something like "2d8+20" per attack. If you picked up Power Attack (and you do have an extra feat) this can get even higher; with an attack bonus of ~30, you can easily add 10 damage to most attacks.

For pure damage, Warriors and Barbarians, supposedly the premier melee combatants of the game, literally cannot compete. This doesn't even prevent the player from picking up Spirit Armor, Mage Armor, and Barkskin for ridiculous natural armor; in a game where ~14 protection is the max for unenchanted plate armor, Mage-Druids can easily reach 30.

And of course, there are a lot of non-damage buff spells that Mage-Druids can cast which only make the gap wider. I can see that Incursion's developer tried to stay as true to D&D as possible.

I'll answer these two questions at the same time, because they're very similar.
I
t depends. You have to decide why you're multiclassing, and then pick which abilities you want first. For example, one might start off as a melee-based Priest, but take a single level in Mage for Shield, Mage Armor, and False Life; most of his scaling abilities only upgrade on even Priest levels, so he's not losing out on much by doing this. You don't multiclass for funsies, you do it because you have a specific goal in mind, and multiclassing is the most effective way of accomplishing it. Some builds do want to spread out the levels somewhat equally. For example, a buff-based Mage-Druid will want a minimum of Druid 4, Mage 5, and the last two levels could be spent in Druid for better Wildshape. Meanwhile, a Monk could happily take Druid (or Ranger) 2, Mage 3 for buffs and put the rest in Monk. Again, it depends mainly on your intended build.

Spellcasting classes (Druid, Mage, Priest) go well together, except Druid/Priest, because Druids can only worship certain gods. A non-spellcasting class and a little bit of one or two spellcasting classes go well together. Barbarians don't multiclass well at all. Hybrids don't multiclass well in general, but there are exceptions. It boils down to asking the question, "what does this class not have that it could really use," then finding the class that best meets that need. For example, Mages have poor offense, but lots of utilities and even more defenses. Druids have lots of offense, but poor defense and okay utilities. Combine them, and you get good offense, great defense, and absurd utility while retaining 11 casting levels.

You see, food should have had more gameplay value in Crawl but CrawlDevsâ„¢ removed inventory weight and the PC even has 52 inventory slots. Not to mention that food chunks are literally everywhere in a 3 rune game despite the necessary nerf for it being so obvious: remove food chunks.

Those dumb devs may have destroyed the value of inventory management and most of food's relevance but that doesn't mean that food completely lost its value. It's still there to cuck one of the greatest no brainers of Crawl: Spells. Food would become generally relevant again when someone manages to remove those devs and bring back the value of inventory management, decrease the total inventory slots and remove stashing.

Anyway I feel extended will eat you alive unless you find a good enough replacement for the axe, plus trog is a tiny bit sucky for new players in 5+ runs because berserk generally runs out too fast if you don't know exactly when to let it go and last thing you want to find yourself is slowed down when there's multiple torment/damnation sources on screen and you haven't got shit to block LoS. Trog's hand still good tho. If you get any better exec axe you might wanna switch to TSO if you aim to go above 5 runes, since I doubt you could survive trog's wrath in the power spike that's abyss/crypt/slime

Generally 2 next easiest runes are Abyss and Slime. Abyss might be faster but is a bit RNG-reliant, Slime you need rCorr for. Prepare to get the shit mutated out of you. You have a ranged option, right?

Why? Stairs are the safest for everyone. The only reason Slimes got easier than Tomb is because it's less tedious to clear but Slimes could easily out-DPS Tomb. If you erase the tedium in clearing Tomb, it is a 3 rune branch. In fact, it is ALREADY a 3 rune branch.
