Been playing D3 in hardcore mode exclusively, someone recommended me PoE a while back, but I never really downloaded it until now.

D3 is fairly straighforward with builds, you pick a class, pick abilities that seem useful and in the endgame, you just make builds around the legendaries + sets you get.

However, I'm at the character creation screen in PoE and I have no fucking clue what to pick, and where to go from there.

It's base ES. The only thing a lot of people get stuck on is the mana as ES thing, which just adds % mana and % ES together at the end. There's no source of flat ES in the game that isn't scaled.

Make a strong map farmer and run maps fast, or sell boss kills, or run labs, or farm low tier maps for essences, talismans, etc. There are as many ways of making money as you can imagine, so long as you're efficient. IIR/IIQ is not worth it unless you can't stack a lot of them and be really fast in Dried Lake.

You can either make a dedicated farmer and fund a stronger build or respec down the road, depends on your base class and ascendancy. Witch and Templar got pretty versatile ascendancies for example, you can easily start as Necro and respec to Occultist later when you make the CI switch.

Working on a Viper Strike Assassin. Tree will be revised once the new info is released, but I figure it will only get better due to improvements in sword nodes and life nodes in the ranger/shadow area.

Rough draft assumes average rolls across the board. Uniques are Edge of Madness, Cherrubim's Maleficence, Ming's Heart, and Growing Agony. Also assumed are a rustic sash and typical flat physical damage rolls on the neck and ring #2 (totally 18 - 35). Other slots and gear mods are not accounted for.

Links are Viper Strike, Added Chaos Damge, Void Manipulation, Melee Physical Damage, and Multistrike. All level 18, 0 quality.

Basic DPS (not counting critical hits, accuracy, and degeneration damage) assuming we have proced the Unholy Might from Growing Agony and the similar effect from Toxic Delivery is approximately 58600 at level 70, 65500 at level 80, and 72700 at level 90. Those lower level numbers will be a bit lower due to some damage nodes arriving late in the process, but for the sake of theorycrafting, you get the idea.

If I simulate the shift to two-handed weapons (+0.1 attacks per second, decrease in base damage assumed to retain the 1.2/1.3 proportion) the basic DPS at level 90 increases to 77600, and attacks per second increase to 4.186 from 3.864.

With a base poison duration of 8.4 seconds (or 10.8 if Noxious Strike procs) we can stack 35 (or 45) instances of VS poison on a target. Not counting crits, the poison should be doing upwards of 8200 per second per stack.

Bleed will be doing a paltry 630 per second. Double that once the target is maimed (about half a second into the fight).

As the last hurrah of poison/chaos double dipping, you could do a whole lot worse. We haven't factored in enemy defenses, but we also haven't accounted for Vulnerability yet. Bosses will melt.

This damage is single target, but there is still a 6th link free for Melee Splash. Or you could use your choice of Cyclone, Lacerate, or what have you for AOE'ing.

There used to be some builds that were better as Scion but when the leech got gutted it basically killed that.

I like the idea of the Scion borrowing from other ascendencies, but they need to do a better job balancing them. They just gave her the nerf hammer then gave up.

Let's hope she gets some love in 3.0.
