Fucking humans edition.

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

How the fuck do you play Shinuyama?
Most of your summons need Turmoil, but your main mage is so expensive that it's probably not an option.
Most of your troops fucking suck and make you want to take Sloth, but then there are Dai Bakemono who is resource intensive.
>>
>>169779025
Learn a bunch of the hotkeys. Formation and troop order hotkey make scripting battles much faster (and learn how to copy/paste mage scripts if you somehow haven't already).

Hotkeys can make your life easier in other areas too. Blood hunting got much less of a chore once I found out about the hotkeys, and I wouldn't be surprised if you could get similar gains in other areas.

>>
>>169779589
Dai Bakemono are your best troops, and actually do pretty decent in combat.. I'd definitely take production for them, otherwise you're stuck fighting your battles with low protection chaff.

For mages you get kind of fucked, either go with Sorcerers and pay tons for guys who are super old age or you can go with Uba and end up with the majority being pretty useless. I think I'd recruit mostly Uba and try to make them useful however I can, because I don't think Sorcerers are good enough to beat out 3 Uba.

Ignore your national death summons. Dai Oni don't need Turmoil and the rest are terrible.

>>169779684
I wanted to tell you why it was shit, desu.

I've had my fill of playing Kailasa for a long while. Their troops are too terrible early, and the nation isn't good enough lategame to make up for it.

Advice on pretender design?
I think I'd take A4 since those buffs are important lategame and other than that full scales? I mean they can craft most other boosers themself and summon shit that cast those spells for them.
Maybe A4E1 so you can get late game mobile Dai Tengu buff support? Or can that be covered by Fairy Queens?
Magic scales for Ubas?

Jesus Christ, their pretender choices suck.
>>
>>169781106
You can have them if host delets me.
I enjoy innovative strategies
>>
>>169781189
You need to ask yourself a question: can I expand with Shinu?

You probably can't, so take an erf snek. If you can, A4E4S4-6 diversity titan might be a good choice.
>>

Sorry guys, life got busy.
>>
>>169781189
Dai Tengu are available much earlier in research than Faery Queens, use a different gem type, and come with a retinue of decent flying soldiers. They're very worth grabbing paths for on your pretender.

I'd also like to grab enough death for eventual tarts, but I can't seem to make something affordable which does so.

I wouldn't bother with magic scales for Uba unless you have excess points - 13RP each is already pretty high.

My current ideas are:

F3D5 Bakemono Kunshu, dormant. Great scales, tarts late, can SC. Doesn't get Dai Tengu, though.

F2A2E1D5 Bakemono Kunshu, dormant. Everything the above does, with slightly worse scales (points come out of magic scales, which aren't super important for the nation anyway). Can get Dai Tengu too, but you'd need to empower a Dai Tengu for air booster access (or buy it).

A4E2S5 Celestial General, dormant. Gets you air boosters and Dai Tengu with eventual access to rings (for great magical diversity) if you get some astral income. I think I like this one the most, but it'd have a harder time getting into tarts lategame than either of the above.

Do any of those look interesting to you?

>>169782313
This is a good point. All of the above designs take prod 3, but even that might not be enough to get a decent expansion.

>>
>>169783609
>I'd still love to have more pretender choices on Shinuyama.
Yeah, me too. Japanese nations really get the short stick in pretender choices. Few options, and many of them are worse than comparable options on other nations.
>>
>>169783969
>Japanese nations really get the short stick in pretender choices.
All Asian nations are like that, actually. What hurts them the most is lack of monster pretenders (other than erf snek, I guess), which tend to be very cost-effective, both as awake expanders and bless chassis.
>>
>>169784165
*cost-efficient, obviously. I need to sleep.
>>
>>169783587
A generous offer, but I believe I asked you first.
Also I think there's basically no chance your build is better. I've spent a ton of time with Kailasa.
>>
>>169784687
I think the same about yours. What game was that one? Didn't see a kailasa player that got it right.

Were you Stalewarriors Kailasa for a casual?
>>
>>169784165
That feel when no Gashadokuro pretender for Yomi and Shinu.
>>
>>169784950

There's so much mad shit you could use for pretenders for those nations. Like the ghost with a giant eyeball in his asshole.
>>
>>169784762
It wasn't a domg game, it was on Dom4Mods. Have you played a lot of Kailasa though? I don't think there's any build that I would consider better than mine...and you may feel the same. Absolutely no harm in posting pretender builds for example on domg. It just depends on how detailed you want to get. If I hear something genuinely new I'm happy to share my build and strategy, which imo is a more effective Kailasa than most people have seen.
>>
>>169785194

>>
>>169785820

Go on my merry way and hope to god he's not here to blood hunt.
>>
>>169785236
The thing is you already mocked on part of my build, so there is no reason to post it since you will consider it retarded. That's why I want to know why don't you consider at least a minor air bless for your sacred archers.

I feel like saying "you dont need a bless for archers" because Kailasa is a mage nation is like saying you dont want W9 for your vanheres because EA Van is a thug nation.

Sacred longbows is one of the only things Kailasa has, other than not slow to recruit E3 and W3 mages, which also benefit from extra precision because they are sacred.

Why do you think it's such a bad idea?
>>
>>169786178

It's also got UNIVERSALLY sacred mages, who do benefit from an A minor. I'd still go mostly scales, but a couple minors don't hurt.
>>
>>169786350
What does "UNIVERSALLY" mean in that context?
>>
>>169786178
Ah, I'm glad I actually anticipated part of the build. It's just because every now and then someone has the idea for an A9F9 archer bless or something like it.
In brief: it's been tested, and it's only alright. A4 would of course be much cheaper so...it doesn't hurt you much. But it's still not good. Some reasons:
Your longbows are cap-only and compete with a better melee sacred
Your mages almost never need Prec since you'll be using lots of astral and your Yakshas will buff, not cast offensive (prec-requiring at least) spells.
You have cheaper fort and forestrec shortbows...4x cheaper in fact, so 4 times as many (slightly weaker) arrows for the same price.
You don't have easy F access for flaming arrows, nor do you really have easy air access for wind guide (Conj 6 for Kinnaras).

To be fair, A4 could be useful for forging stuff that requires A4...communioned Kinnaras can take care of high-level Air battle magic though.
>>
>>169786567
I think not using GoH communions is a mistake, you should really consider those.
>>
>>169786539

Every single national mage they have is sacred.
>>
>>169786567
I'm curious, why do you consider their melee sacreds better? And please don't tell me you run W9 or E9 or some stupid pseudouseful bless.
>>
>>169786830
They are supremely buffable. even lategame, no spell exists to give a unit awe. When you take care of their shit prot with iron warriors etc. they make extremely tough elite troops.
With N9E4 and ironskin they are unstoppable, and the bless is acceptable for expansion.
>>
>>169786990
i can see it being useful after turn 30, but only bad neighbours would let you survive until then. Either that or a top tier diplomancing.
>>
>>169786670
Yeah, GoH is great, get it if you can.

Their melee sacreds are better because they're very effective against most indies, for expansion, and once your buffs come online they're amazing in the lategame. I use N9E4 typically, W9 is a bit of a waste for the mid-lategame. And N is better for communions and commanders generally, also lets you do Mother Oak and GoH.

Something like this then?
Couldn't quite decide if I wanted Heat 3 or Cold 3. The latter for Shura thugs I guess.
Had 40 leftover points so bumped E to 4. Minor bless, acess to Staff of Elemental Mastery (your Sorcerers should get them too, but it takes effort and you get the other FW version).
>>
>>169787035
You can hold against a decent number of different enemies with cheap shortbows and blockers and low-resource sacreds with Awe. If you go for Thaumaturgy, Soul Slay is useful against the types of enemies that give Yavanas a hard time. And at Thaum6 you're golden.
>>
>>169782426
Eh Kailasa was just the first nation I decided on, I'm not dead set on them
>>
>>169786990
While they are buffable, I don't see awe being any useful after turn 50, since most of the good mid-late units have perfect morale.
It might work in the turns 30 to 50, I think, but after that you won't get much use of them. Also 4 attacks per square is a bit disappointing.

>>169788603
No problem (although that last quote wasn't me).
Celestial Music is what really makes the Yavs shine, probably more than Awe. They get beastly. And your lategame magic diversity is strong. It's a good nation if you make it that far.
>>
>>169789056
What did Celestial music do? Same as Quickening for all your units?
>>
If you empower your pretender after the game has begun does the higher magic levels affect your bless?

I'm assuming it doesn't, but just to be sure.
>>
>>169789413
Yep, it's the same effect. +3 attack, +3 def, and 2 moves per turn. Some people don't know that the "Quickness" in the W9 bless is only 1.5 moves per turn (every other turn they make 2 moves). And obviously you get +4 def instead of +3 def and +3 att.

>>
>>169794584
Precision 5 means you will hit a unit with it roughly 75% of the time.

MRN means that a single militia unit that gets hit can resist it about 50% of the time.

Single target means you can affect only one militia unit per casting.

Range 25 means you can't target someone like mages or even archers on other side of the battlefield.

40 stun damage means that you have to cast it 3 times and succeed in all 3 cases to get a unit out of combat and make it fatigued.

Not good at all, anon. Not good at all. Has some early anti-thug usage if you have A1 mages, I guess, but I'd rather spend a gem for each mage to cast a lot of lightning bolts and kill something for good than hope for this shitty illfraud's abortion to work.

N9e4/6 is a tried and true great idea.
I was actually going to try E9 erf snek this time, the 5 extra protection isn't huge but it is enough to get you through expansion with few casualties, and the erf snek expands like it always does.

It goes well in late game though since it stacks with all the buffs you can throw onto your troops, and the Reinvig is super useful on both your troops and your mages.

It's being unable to handle Ermor when time has become inconstant and fluctuates back and forth on the whims of Llama, leading to a hell of infinite scripting and exponential skeletons that you cannot control or escape from.
>>

Full scales, yeah.
Turn 1 you get more spearment and maybe a lucky merc company.
Turn 2 you start recruiting cav and never stop.

>>169808506
Everyone is fighting because super tight map. One team already bitched out and Lambert had to find subs for them.
>>
>>169808506
The game had to be restarted multiple times due to map fuckups

In spite of the restarts, we started on a map with like 50 UW provinces for exactly one UW nation (MA Pelagia).

In addition to having a shitload of UW provinces, land was super tight. Like, Archaea tight.

The map has a large number of 'small' provinces and dense farm clusters, and the excess farms were also just set to be 'small' provinces instead of swapped out to another terrain type. This means that in addition to being cramped and poor for MA, there's essentially just fewer gems on the map.

There's some really weird connections, like a cave province that connects to literally one other province.

Most of the teams have started fighting on account of the tininess of the map.

It was discovered that most nations didn't have Fort-Era as a national property, meaning that they defaulted to MA when they shouldn't have. This changed how much gold/resources certain teams had, and made some nations take longer to get their first forts up.

Something Awful lost a fort under construction and subsequently subbed out their entire team because they're bitchmade.

One (1) guy wanted to sub for the entire SA team and player all three nations, but then another person joined him making their team slightly less awesome but easier to actually communicate with.

/v/anheim, UNF, and domg are all on the Xv1 sides of their respective wars and doing pretty okay as a result.

The game's honestly a shitshow and should never have started using this map or any version of this map. Some discoveries were made about one age forts. Several of the teams that I thought would be okay ended up being uttershit. Someone else should host the next CC to save Mr Lambert's poor heart.

>>
>>169817596
No, see, the way it works (worked? Like I mentioned, I think they fixed this) was that summod made a unique commander with super awesome stats. ME made it so that a tarrasque that was a commander, it became an 'awakened tarrasque' unit (nonunique) that had magic paths, possibly some other improvement, and autocast Foul Vapors. The result was that each summoned tarrasque, if you summoned them one at a time, would have summod tarrasque SC stats, but now also the magic paths and autocast from ME.

Also sorry for being a bad admin and not AIing Utgard, I asked someone to do it and he didn't, haven't had time to shill in this thread as I got promoted and am now working "obligatory" overtime every day. Best cheap summonable leader with high magic leadership? Playing EA Ulm.

My nation has access to every path at 3 (with cheap boosters) except blood, but any mage I recruit can only support 10 magic beings. As of turn 15, I earn 12 water gems per turn, and I was figuring I could throw those at claymen, but then I realized I have nothing that could easily mobilize an army of them. The astral crowns you can make gives me 35 at const 4, but I can pump them out with abandon nearly already and can't really do anything with them.

Thanks

Thanks, still pretty new to the game. Playing against the AI on master to get my bearings before doing a game on here.

As far as I understand, water is pretty meh as a magic path. Is there something else I should be doing with these gems other than alchemy, claymen, and frost brands? Claymen seem like great frontliner chaff with all the buffs Ulm can throw through its sort of natural desire to go Alteration (mass protection, earth might, etc, etc)

Xib, 2 stales? Do you need to be set ai?
>>
>>169787129
That's basically what I was thinking of. I think I didn't take misfortune but it's definitely worth it for E4.

>Couldn't quite decide if I wanted Heat 3 or Cold 3. The latter for Shura thugs I guess.
Yeah, it'd be about even value either way.

Have a look at the map you're playing on for the frequency of rivers vs mountain passes, and have a look at which other nations dislike. Those factors are probably more important than Shura cold aura.

>>169788004
My first goal would almost certainly be Flaming Arrows at Ench 4. You have really cheap archers, and it's a good way to make an army powerful with low mage investment (all you need is a single F3 Bakemono Sorcerer).

After that, I'd grab some of the following, in roughly the following order. It probably depends on what players you meet.

Conj3 for Lesser Fire Elemental and Phoenix Power. Phoenix Power means every Bakemono Sorcerer can cast Flaming Arrows, so you don't need to recruit a bunch and hope for F3. Lesser Fire Elemental is handy if you have a bunch of Sorcerers fighting, though not really worth recruiting 400g mages for.

Ench5 for Horde of Skeletons (for your lucky D2 Uba) and Foul Vapors. Your troops don't resist Foul Vapors, but Bakemono have high hp so will die much slower to it than humans. You can group up your mages and drop an AoE15 poison resistance (also available by ench5) on them.

Alteration 4 for Swarm. Expensive to cast a lot, but it can be devastating if used right. It'd be earlier in the list, but you need to build up a nature income before it's really useful since you get none from your capital.

Evocation 3 for Sleep Cloud. A way for N2 Uba to contribute to fights without using gems.
>>
>>169865631
Great advice.
Conj1 for Tangle Vines might be worth researching even before Ench4, since any Uba can cast it to help Dai Bakomono chop to pieces elves etc. (because you WILL be rushed as Shinu without an awake pretender).
Alt4 also gives you Destruction, which makes your archers much more effective vs elite troops. And Maws of the Earth at Alt5 is pretty great at killing non-armored stuff.
>>
>>169866435
I don't like the idea of Destruction much, since you'd be doing it using 400g mages with massive encumbrance. If you're fighting someone with lots of heavy armor like Ulm, maybe.

The other two spells are great, though.
>>
>>169867003
There's a fair few heavy armor nations. It's pretty excellent against Arco's heavy infantry and romans, for instance. It's also just a HUGE deal against those units. Destruction takes units from immune to your archers to dying instantly.
>>
>>169849148
By god please end it
>>
>>169867003
>>169871326
Destruction's actually a pretty big deal against a majority of the nations in MA

>>169865631

Frighten is another spell any Uba can cast. Supposedly it's one of the more effective 1 path, low research spells.

Yeah, neither of those have anything particularly notable. Although LA C'tis Tomb Kings are definitely thuggable, they're also way too expensive to make it a good idea. Better off using them for chariot/snek factories. Jomon's also got some real nice summons which are usable as solo commander shitstompers (Dai Oni), but again, expensive. Better deployed as support for armies.

And what you've all been waiting for, my poorly designed memelith. Feel free to laugh it up.
I picked Atlantis at random, but looking in the inspector before the game I thought I would be relying heavily on the coral armored guys (35 gold/resources or so) since they don't melt in the heat so I went all in on scales. Turns out they're shit and it's better to just Wolven Winter all over the place. I chose the monolith because I saw Kailasa use one to great effect in RubbaDubDubNoobsAndScrubs, although I wasn't able to get nearly the same memery out of it. I ended up empowering it to cast Rain of Stones, but never actually got to cast it. Spamming juggernaut construction took priority and nobody was fielding supercombatants.
>>
>>169934483
I had every demon lord at some point and I just couldn't be bothered to do anything big with them. Getting that one guy to cast enchanted forests was the most I did with them.
>>
>>169934483
All that Atlantis needs is good scales and E2 for putting shoes on your 4GIFing Daddies, so monolith is actually A-okay. Plus it was a noob game, so prod 3 Atlantis can kick everyone's ass with their simple, synergistic magic and amazing heavy infantry.
>>
>>169934483
>>169932876
Overall, the game went well even though none of my plans worked out the way I was expecting, and I learned a lot. I'm really impressed by Atlantis, I feel that they're a top tier nation at least compared to those I previously played (R'lyeh and Ur). They basically trade all of R'lyeh's weaknesses (aquatic hands-free commanders, troops are dogshit) for strengths and the mobility of Angakok commanders is amazing when you're moving around a sea. No ranged troops was kind of a problem, but I compensated by sending lots of Frozen Heart spammers. I think I won for three reasons: one, I was constantly at war for the entire game from before the end of the expansion phase on, which let me pay the upkeep on those stupidly expensive Angakoks; two, my neighbors didn't dogpile me until I already had enough of a mass of mages and troops to beat any one of them individually and enough Angakoks to fortify any position near the lake in two turns, and I don't think they coordinated their attacks; and three, Atlantis is just really good even in the hands of an idiot like me.

I had a lot of fun, but I think I'll need to take a break from Dominions from a little while instead of starting another game. Towards the end of this one, I had to really rush my turns and I made a lot of mistakes as a result of not having enough free time in the evenings.

>>169934838
In hindsight I think I would have wanted a god with some air. I empowered an A1 Angakok all the way up to A4 thanks to my amazing gem income, but it was too late to start rolling out Arrow Fend mages which would have helped a lot against Tien Ch'i, who massed cavalry archers with flaming weapons.

>>169934786
Enchanted forests seems pretty worthless. Your other global, the one that caused assassinations in your dominion, was much more useful. I think if you had pushed your dominion, you might have been able to hold me off better.
>>
If no one steps up to the plate to sub for Pelagia before next turn rolls over, they will be set AI.
>>
>>169936035
Enchanted forests pushed my dominion from every forest while randomly launching attacks so I wouldnt call it useless.
>>
>>169936680
Oh, is that how you got those distant provinces at random? I figured you dropped werewolves on them.
Your dominion was really weak, though. Can Ulm not blood sacrifice, or did you just start off with a really low base dominion?
>>
>>169936035
Enchanted Forests is one of the best globals in the game, especially when combined with another global that affects things in your dominion, like vengeful water.

Every forest on the map counts as a temple and when dominion gets high enough it attacks provinces with armies led by Ivy Kings or Troll Shamans.

Sometimes the Ivy King will charm things.

>>
>>169937479
I couldn't really think of anything to do with them. Mabakiel was just a heliophagus I think. I was going to set up Geryon as an assassin with a black heart and a cat charm once I realized he was fucking up my dominion, Ashmedai and Belphegor were hanging out giving me even more freespawn and free bloodslaves, I might have used Buer to cast fire arrows if I still had my crossbowmen when I summoned him but they were all dead at that point, Belial was busy getting empowered and casting globals and Pazuzu got dumped on you so he wouldnt kill all my shit with disease.

>According to Basil Liddell Hart, Hannibal, emerging from another brilliant victory, had successfully planned and executed "the greatest ambush in history."
>Dodge added, "It is the only instance in history of lying in ambush with the whole of a large army."
>Similarly, historian Robert L. O’Connell also writes, "[It was] the only time an entire large army was effectively swallowed and destroyed by such a maneuver."

Hannibal is the GOAT

Let's say I'm playing Asphodel and want to remove Ermor early on. Would my Hierophants destroy more skeletons using Dust to Dust than Banishment, assuming I also have regular priests to spam Banishment with?
>>
>>169970296
You don't have banishment as a national spell, dummy. Banishment/unholy command and other spells like that depend on your nation, not the priest type. Sceleria gets both banishment/power of the sepulchere, other non-undead nations only get banishment, Ermor only gets unholy spells etc.

Also, if someone competent plays Ermor you'll lose 100% of times in vanilla.

First of all, the other guy isn't wrong about fighting Ermor early being very likely to go badly. Get a coalition before even thinking about it.

Now, numbers. Assuming you hit full squares with each spell (and only counting one shot kills, which undervalues banishment), I calculated the following:

Generic longdead, no MR buff: banishment is almost as good as D2D within the first 5 turns. Afterwards it does much better. By 15 turns you'll have done over double the damage with banishment compared to D2D.

National longdead, no MR buff: Banishment does about 60-80% as well as D2D (depending on specific unit type) within the first 5 turns. After 10 turns you will be doing better than D2D, by 20 you should have done about twice as well.

Generic longdead, MR buff: Banishment does much worse in the first 5 turns, about 40% of D2D. You break even around turn 15.

National longdead, MR buff: Banishment does much worse in the first 5 turns, less than 33% of D2D. It will be turn 20+ before you break even with D2D.

Ingame testing would give better numbers, but I don't want to spend that much time.

Looking at those numbers, your choice will primarily depend on whether you think Ermor is likely to buff his troops with MR. Bear in mind he has a national H3 spell which has a chance to give each unit MR. If his prophet is there he will almost certainly have a lot of magic-resistant undead.

D2D is also a far better choice against his sacreds, and it is very likely Ermor will be deploying them. If you are expecting lictors (or knights with a nature bless), I'd strongly consider D2D even if it performs worse against chaff.

Is there stuff like damage localization or damage kind in Dominions?
My skeletons get killed by arrows, which is stupid.
>>
>>169979934
Skeletons have damage resistance to piercing damage, it's just the fact that they have 5 hp, which is extremely low. They're still better than most standard troops in good numbers, as they don't get fatigue and can't rout.

Also, there are damage zones like legs/arms/head/body as well.
>>
>>169980031
But no damage immunity? You would think that a skeleton is completely insensible to arrows or pitchforks.
>>
>>169980142
There's invulnerability, which makes you almost completely immune to non-magical damage. Also, skeletons are rotting bones, I imagine they're pretty easy to pierce with spears if you get a good hit in the head or something.
>>
>>169980226
But would that do anything? I mean, they're skeleton. It's not like you can damage the brain to kill them.
>>
>>169980370
Maybe their necromantic calcium power source is in the head.
>>
>>169980426
That doesn't really make sense, but then again, we're talking about magic. Maybe skeleton do have some kind of magical brain that allows them to move and receive basic orders.
>>
>>169980370
in dominions if you damage any of the bones that might separe the skeleton. Skellies in dominions won't reform, they stay still.

That's probably because necromancy only puts the bones together and gives it life, but if it breaks the enchantment ends.
>>
>>169980370
Skellingtons can't heal naturally, so it means that if you break the bone it stays broken.
>>
Hosting posponed until we resolved this.
>>
>>169980484
Ha, in Dominions, if you take the skeleton apart, it "dies"?
Ha, okay. That makes sense. That also makes them very fragile. Just grab a bone and pull.
>>
Also REMINDER that we may have to rollback the turn for potential subs so don't take it yet and then complain about it.

And ATLANTIS and BATS if you are still alive and plan on playing in you better let me know.

>>169980542
Please fleshy, we all know that's a lie. Bone is living tissue
>>
>>169980709
Yes, I think this is why they have 0 protection.
Alkso they have pierce-resistant, so it kinda emulates what you wanted: it's easier to tear bones apart with a club or a sword than with a spear. (But you can still do it)

Would playing a disciple game be better for learning new things? Especially as somebody who is new at the game?
>>
>>169997095

It depends. We've had newbie+veteran disciples games in the past, and the quality of the veterans at teaching newbies useful shit is wildly variable.
>>
>>169997095
That's a good question. There was also a learning game where it was a noob game with vet coaches assigned hosted on Discord by one of the TL guys. I'm not sure whether that or a disciples team proper is better, but I imagine that any of them would do all right on their own in another game by now, after seeing the scripts and strategies of some of the novices. The only thing that I disliked about this game was that some of the coaches were either not very helpful or just weren't very good themselves, and it became pretty apparent when their players just got eaten.

How's Teaching Feeling going?
>>
>>169997610
The same happened in Teaching_feeling.
Team vanheim-vanarus nap'd with malakal and did nothing for 30 turns, and team abysia-ashdod got eaten by not doing really well.
After than those, the rest of the world seems to be doing well.
>>
>>169997610
tbf with clustered starts sometimes you just lose a member straight up. Hard to protect a player when they start surrounded by an enemy team.
>>
>>169997095
Just scout a lot, watch battles and reverse engineer how to get what you see on the battlefield, and obviously understand what the situation is that stuff is on the battlefield for.

Of course, against human players you should always scout at all times.

Sorry that I am not addressing your thesis but I think just scouting is how you allow every opponent to teach you the game.
>>
>>169997095
In theory. But many vets aren't good teachers, and most noobs are unreliable shits who are a pain to play with until they've matured a little.
>>
What if Illwinter made it so that troops get a large morale boost when their commanders is fighting alongside them and not sitting in the rear?

Would that bring back geared non-mage commanders? Defensive gear would allow commanders to fight alongside their troops and spread their valorous aura. It would work like a reverse fear.

It kind of bugs me that during the historical periods Dominions is based off of it was common for commanders and even generals to fight alongside their troops in the vanguard. They did it to inspire their men. In dominions commanders are all scaredy cats that stick to the rear like modern generals.
>>
>>170000498
Needless to say the aura would only work if the commander attacks enemies in melee. With a constant aura you could have the same bonus effect with stay behind troops without risking your dude.
>>
>>170000498
Fuck you, my knight commanders of Avalon ride alongside their troops. How else will they digivolve?
>>
>>170000000
Where are you?

>>170000498
That would be fun. People wouldn't follow a commander who doesn't go in battle.
>>
>>170000498
I think alongside this idea, you should be able to buy a batch of national commanders in a single fort turn, like if a commander doesnt have magic paths you can buy a set amount of morale leader points in a turn, like say the limit was 4, you could get 4 +0 morale bonus commanders, or 2 +1, or any combo of mundane commanders, that way it could actually incentivize using the mundane national leaders. And this limit could vary across nations to balance thug chassis commanders. This would only work for commanders who aren't stealthy aren't sacred and have 0 magic paths.

Alternatively you could have a commander unit have a second in command leader unit summon with him during battle that spawned with the front formation.
>>
>>169936035
My first mistake was my pretender: I went with an E9 golden pillar. With 8 dom. Instead of taking luck or magic to full along with the bless. My idea was to spam out blindfighters and let that do the talking for me. 100 turns ago, that sounded like a winning strat because blindfighters are recruit anywhere, so hey! What can go wrong?

Turns out, natural prot doesn't stack linearly with armour! Whodathunkit. Aside from that, I had no fucking idea how to counter Ragha, and it was only the timely intervention of Atlantis and Ragha's own peacing out that kept me alive. I wasted a LOT of gems on iron corpses, intending to use them+E2 alchemists casting iron marionettes to make blenders. This ended up being way too complicated and inefficient, not to mention ineffective. I only had one ktonian reanimator skeleraiding, but that got eaten by an Atlantis stack and I decided it wasn't worth continuing to fight AI Ragha on that end so I ended that plan. I also didn't use nearly enough crossbows in the earlier stage of the game, relying instead on blindfighters almost exclusively. I also recruited far too many of the mages-that-i-can't-even-remember-the-name-of. The guys that aren't reanimators or alchemists. I was also too scared to go to war with anyone else aside from Ragha, after getting walloped by Ragha, when I really should have eaten Abysia almost immediately, and also started a war with Utgard instead of giving him skull mentors.
>>
>>170001964
Things I feel I did right: I focused way less on evospam than I did with other games going on simultaneously. I was summoning lots of flame spirits, not too many, but at least two per army, to cast flaming arrows and flame ward, while W2 alchemists with water bracelets casted fire resistance to counter Ragha's fire ele spam, and F9 bless. I also looked at the Zhayedans and sought to make their strengths into weaknesses. Did this in two ways: 1, I cast Iron Bane and figured that my crossbows would negate their prot before they even flew in. Crossbows don't do that, but blindfighters do, and that won me my first real battle. I also had a bunch of high D dudes cast the Enfeeble set of spells, which are actually /really/ good against someone who masses expensive sacreds, because a permanent -6 strength is a pretty heavy blow to something that can only hit things inna face. I was also really happy with how I identified research goals and stuck to them, and then adapted my research once I knew what he had. Also feel like my tactical game was pretty strong, even if my strategic game was weak. With the experience I have now, if I could go back, I'd probably have a pretty good shot at ending Atlantis' reign.

LA Agartha is really, REALLY good as a nation. Alchemists are solid battlemages, reanimators are good raiders, blindfighters are good sacreds, tomb oracles are good SCs, Necromancers have access to a lot of great buffs. Really solid nation all round.
>>
>>170001543
Or have the basic national commanders be foreignrec.
>>
>>170002663
If I could replay this game, I would definitely have taken an N9ExSx monolith. That would have opened up a lot of options to me in late game, not least of which would have been a mother oak caster. I had a bear tribe shaman I recruited right at the beginning to sitesearch N1 that ended up as an N3S1 holding a thistle mace and moonvine bracelet that was keeping mother oak online and summoning Faerie Queens every other turn. Fun times.

I would also have attacked Ragha much later, if all. I'd have attacked either Utgard or Abysia instead, as they were weaker targets, but I was fooled into thinking it was a good idea to attack the strongest player because of you fuckers. Protip to any new players: Attack the weak guy first. Snowballing is always better than weakening both you and your target and allowing some other nation to vulture both of you when you are spent.

I'd have slowed down on the skull mentor production jesus christ i had like 30 of the damn things.

I'd have employed Tomb Oracle SCs as late game raiders.

I'd have bootstrapped into Blood at some point, or bought bloodslaves from someone, just for the battlefield buffs.

I'd have used my insane S income to forge boosters and shit to get high S mages that could cast Will of the Fates and other cool shit with communions. High Temple of the Magi is a great site 10/10 would recommend.

I'd have not been a pussy against Ragha and raided him more rather than trying to fight his doomstacks head on.

Biggest mistake people fall into, desu. Too many people think armies matter. Provinces matter. There are solutions to armies in the same way that there are solutions to thugs or SCs. Sometimes that solution is your own army, sometimes it's an SC, sometimes it's RoS.

>>
>>170003598
Armies matter a lot during super early rushes - yes, provinces matter as well, but if the enemy plops their army you cannot beat on your capital early you're done.

This is how nations such as Vanheim and Abysia can beat Xibalba in earlygame - just plop a force bats can never hope to remove on the capital and wait for the income to dry up.
>>
>>170005049
Most EA nations can do that to early bats.
Marv and a few other human nations can't but I don't know of any way Marv could beat bats outside of a coalition.

I've thought before about giving commanders some sort of "brand" attack with an AoE that raises morale for nearby friendlies. A 40 leadership commander would give +1 morale in a very small AoE and higher levels of leadership or Inspired Leadership would buff the effect. Unfortunately I haven't the slightest idea of how to do that.
>>
>>170032094
Sounds like fear technology but backwards...time to figure out how fear works then.

>>
>>170030481
Got it
>>
>>170032653
I know the gist of how it works. I just don't know specifics.

Basically, there are two AoE components to fear - there's a morale check aura and a morale reduction aura. The morale reduction aura has some sort of roll to apply, and you can visibly see how much it reduces a unit's morale by. Since it's variable when in the same fear aura, there's some sort of RNG involved but I don't know exactly what or how. It can get to be very low (seen -30 and below, even). The lost morale isn't permanent (even for the duration of the fights) and you can see morale climb back up, but since morale tends to dip further as units stay inside of fear auras, there might be some sort of check here too.

The second AoE is a morale check aura. I don't know what the numbers here are either, but I know that units in fear auras can rout without taking any damage. When I made a Fear 99 monolith thing with no attacks, units would rout before they even got into melee with it. It doesn't follow the formula that the manual lists, though, since otherwise units would virtually never resist a Fear 99 aura, and that's definitely happened. It seems to be smaller than the morale reduction aura, since there's been a few cases of units with VERY low morale not routing, but I'm not sure about this one either.

The fear spells (Terror, Panic, Frighten) all apply exactly the fear effect - reducing morale and causing morale checks in an AoE. The percentage of a squad affected by the fear spell or aura does seem to matter, which is why the AoE 1 effect doesn't cause squads to rout as consistently. Panic also seems to be a lower level of fear, (Fear 3, iirc) which makes it less likely to cause routes on its own. It stacks nicely with itself and other fear spells, though, because all of them reduce morale. The ones that cause damage AND a fear effect are even better, because they have two chances to cause a morale check, depending on how healthy the squad is.

Can a Ghost King expand decently? If I were to, say, give it 10 Dom for the Awe 3 and then like D7 or something to put Fear at 17 or so?
>>
>>170042883
The problem with ghost kings is that they're glass. They expand fine with armor, but if you need to forge gear for them, they're not a great awake expander.
>>
>>170042883
It's possible to do it, but it's expensive...
The ghost king is already a high cost pretender as it is. Then for it to be useful it has to be taken awaken which costs potentially 150, or 300 points. Which'll mean it needs to be able to use both Awe and Fear because it has low hp and low prot. To get fear you have to send at least 9dominion to get basic awe. This also means that if your nation doesn't use dominon productively then it's a very heavy cost towards your nation. Then for fear ghostking starts with it, but basic fear is at most "acceptable" in terms of routing and that only happens to living indeies, if you fight undead then you can 100% count on your ghost king dying. Which brings to the next step you have to use your ghost king as an early expander which means it has to be: awaken, awe, fear, and high magic. Why high magic? You want to hit alt1 as soon as possible which means it's going to cost you AGAIN for magic paths. At least his magic upgrades are pretty cheap so you can actually make him into a great rainbow pretender, but again it's very expensive for a nation to do this.

All in all it needs
awaken, dom9+, death4+, atleast 50 points of research capable within turn1 including your mage start (if you get one).

The only nation that I know of that can properly utilize a ghost king is Therodos, which I play quite a bit.

It's a very expensive pretender but here are a few things you can do.
1. decent expander (weak to unroutable (undead), earth/nature mages (holds)). Can fight heavy cavs just as well as it can fight normal indies (with the same chance of dying to both). It can go UW. Stealthy so it can bypass some shit.
2. very good rainbow. It's very well possible to get every path and their respective boosters on one person with the ghostking and still have a decent expander. But this means that you're putting all your eggs on one basket (very risky).
3. Utilizes dom. Not many pretenders do well with dom awe...cont
>>
>>170042883
They're not 100% awful as an awake if you can quickly forge armor for them in the first turn or 2 - i.e. construction lv0 armor.

Basically only on a nation with earth magic.
>>

>>

Bullshit, the Ghost King has ethereal and high defense. Give it awe and it can expand just fine unless you throw it at wizard provinces that would kill most dragons anyway.

I think making armor will waste too much time in exchange for something it doesn't need. GK is highly dependent on RNG to survive thanks to its awe, fear and spectral. I've played GK alot and more prot never is worth the 2 turns you have to wait before you get provinces.

>>170042883
part2.
3. Some nations really like dominion (like therodos) so it works in sync with them. Also high dom summon ghost, but they don't spawn fast enough to be useful.

This is a pretender that I use, but i recommend getting 5S to get the rings later on. There are some better mage paths, but A4 is absolutely essential for therodos pretender for raven feast.

Basically the only nation that I know of that can effectively and efficiently use a Gk is therodos. Every other nation will suffer.

Just started my first game against the AI as EA Tien Chi.

Seemingly their cap mages can cast anything with boosters, but it is a bit of slog to get there needing Const levels and the relevant levels in whatever field they are bringing to the table.

Is there a preferred research order with them?
I'm favoring Conj to 3 for the Heavenly Rivers summons, as I was planning a W9A4S4 Bless God as the Wot5W seem great for early expansion and the Heavenly Summons all look really good on paper. Then over to Alteration for earth buffs and back over to Const for boosters.

It just seems like it would take so long for them to get going... I suppose Communions are always a thing.
>>
>>170058143
TC has solid archers and access to both fire and air magic. Armies of archers with tower-shielded infantry, buffed with flaming arrows (enchantment 4) and wind guide (alteration 4), are quite effective in early midgame and only require fielding 2 mages.
>>
>>170058143
Against the AI, whatever works. You can use a real build or just go N9 and overgear random shit because the AI doesn't know how to deal with thugs or roll a fully random pretender and figure out how to use nationals.

In a real game, W9S9 or a similar W9X9 build is pretty solid.

I just tried one for Lemuria. Gave him Dom 10 and S5D7 so he would end up with the Awe 3 and Fear 17 like in the original question, which was only possible with garbage scales that didn't matter because Lemuria.

Never encountered any barbarians on the random map, but heavy infantry/cavalry couldn't break through the awe and routed after a couple of losses most of the time since the fear was putting morale in the shitter. So I guess it's possible, but only if you're playing a nation that can handle terrible scales and are feeling particularly innovative.

I doubt that a xib fighting with only 15 ozes and 2 mages is not also having a "logistical problem" either. Your army looks like a small marv army with random things thrown in there. No boars warriors or carnutes. It'll eventually fall. Xib is good at massing after all. I suggest either high tailing it and saving what you got left or send reinforcements within a turn or two otherwise you'd be surprised how another 200stack of zots will come raining down on you every turn after.

Only a few strongholds remain, and a great enkidu army besieges our greatest city. Ogon the Earth-blooded mourns the loss of Ontog, who was his son and who felt so strongly the cause of Black Opal, for he was slain by the Vanir at Melma. There was the second throne that Black Opal coveted, taken from the demons of Yomi, and there lies the body of a prince. Ogon now creates a statue of onyx to commemorate his son. The rest of the council is paralyzed by lack of options, more concerned with assigning blame than discovering solutions. Lapis has suggested that Ontog's personal competence is to blame for the loss of the north, and many of the oracles, eager for a scapegoat, have accepted the notion. Black Opal, perhaps as much to blame, would be too powerful to be questioned openly, but she too has abandoned the council, returning to the Seal where she was interred.

And she has only now returned.

Black Opal has removed the seal and achieved the fealty of those it guards. Countless shades, perhaps the spirits of those used to create the seal, serve as her personal attendants. The ancient gods imprisoned there have agreed to set upon our enemies. One has gone to Melma, to avenge Ontog. Another is in the mountains now claimed by the Avvim of Hinnom, to regain them there. The third and final one is somewhere else, perhaps among the forces of Ur. And we now have a force sufficient to reforge our surface empire.

Thus writes Halfface, Official Historical Engraver to the Closed Council and First Underlackey to Chiselword, He Who Takes The Minutes.

Newbie here:

If you cast storm, and units that could fly no longer can, can they be hit by earth spells that grip hit from the ground? IE: Earth Grip, Earth Meld, Earthquake, Maws of the Earth?

Playing my first game against a flying nation AI, Caelum, and they have a doomstack 5 times the size of any of my single armies on my capital. I have MAGE SUPPORT, but am afraid I won't be able to turn the tide without these spells
>>
>>170098009
no

In addition to that general case no, Caelians can fly in storms
>>
>>170098009
I doubt those spells would affect them, but Caelum has lots of storm immune fliers
>>
>>170098009
No. Mass flight spell will also prevent you from being hit with EQ and such, even though you won't be able to fly.
>>
>>170098009
Use Rain of Stones or a ton of elite troops. If you're playing against AI numbers shouldn't be an issue at all.
>>
>>170098197
>>170098205
>>170098219
>>170098284

Thanks. With the way unit abilities work in this game, I figured that was the case, but you never know. I have a Staff of Storms or whatever that starts the fight off with a storm, and it appears from the raid on my PD that only 40 or so of their guys can fly through it, so that would work for slowing them down at least.

RoS would kill a lot of my own mages, seeing as they are warrior smiths.

I'll probably be fine, but they just dropped 500 troops in a single turn after declaring war, while all my battlemages are south 4+ turns fighting another war against Marverni.

I'll figure something out.
>>
>>170098878
If it's MA Ulm, just buff your troops with legions of steel/strength of giants/weapons of sharpness and birds will die really fast.
>>
Extremely sorry about the stale, literally was contemplating a move then got a phone call and got distracted for a minute. Either way won't change much Arco is abusing me. Not having RoS researched till 2 turns ago didn't help.
>>
>>170098878
put one mage that can cast RoS in each province that surrounds his doomstack. Since he's AI you won't be able to predict his move, but human players will tend to go for high income provinces. Put a few earth gems on each, then make them cast it twice and then retreat. Bring some chaff, indie militia or whatever, it doesn't matter. It's just to bait his storm immune fliers
>>
>>170099046
It's EA Ulm. Year 4 abouts. I have LoS and Str buffs, but only about 30 shield maidens and 30 warrior maidens (the archers). Gems are going into ogres for the time being to hold a line until the walls break.

Can this be done? #magicboost takes paths as single numbers instead of the combined bitmask.

Out of the nations I've played, I most enjoyed Caelum.

You get to skip so much of the bullshit around moving armies, which lets you easily reposition to respond to threats or go on the offensive.

With other nations, you often have to wait for armies to get there or do shit with a fraction of your troops.

So, apparently EverythingIsBalanced Yomi doesn't know how to set PD to anything more than 0. And he took a dormant shit with D6 and nothing more. For what purpose?
>>
>>170152106
I don't know how to play Caelum properly, then. Their troops are so absurdly shit that I fail expansion every time and never even get to the supposed good part of playing them.
>>
>>170153109
u w0t

Caelum has elephants. That's easymode expansion

You can also expand with the flyers near losslessly against any province with archers by using a lure to draw the melee guys forward and having your lancers set to Hold - Attack Archers. Since indy commanders always wait at the furthest back squad, jumping the archers means jumping the commanders as well, which means you never even need to kill the melees.
>>
>>170153109
Lances are very good for expansion. A full or near-full party of them usually routs or severely damages indie armies on the first attack.

You need to hit larger provinces or heavy cavalry with multiple groups but flying makes that absurdly easy to pull off.

>>170153279
I've had good success even just fighting the melee guys. Lances do such amazing damage on the first strike.
>>
>>170153452
>I've had good success even just fighting the melee guys
Sounds more expensive, though.
>>
>>170153508
Probably, but it works against provinces without archers and it's easier to learn.
>>
>>170153637
>>170153279
I'll tell you what happened to a Xibalba in a game I'm playing in.
>20 bats in the frontline told to guard commanders
>60 to hold-attack archers
>kill some archers
>javelines at your lure
>most of them dead
>your commander dead
>retreat

When we could have just killed everything instead of doing "le meme thing". Sometimes fancy stuff doesn't work that well in dominions and people mostly do it to feel like they are smart.
>>
>>170153886
Xib expands with one bat at the middle-top in line formation and 39 behind set to hold attack archers (or 79 if you're using two parties for a harder province) and with your commanders set to Holdx3 attack archers. It's not a fancy meme leet pro strat, it's just basic scripting. If you have your commander set to attack closest or hold behind troops when you are using a sacrificial lure, then yes they're going to die.
>>
>>170154058
Then this guy got it wrong, I'll maybe get a screen of it if I have some time.
>>
Sorry for staling, I just completely forgot to do my turn.

Vanjarls like that are faster to get than blood 8, and they only need like bless and some buffs. If skratti uses magic weapons no need for mistform either.

>>170167245
Leech has 25 range, vanjarls go bless - flight/gift of flight - attack large monsters and kill them in one round. I know because I did that.
>>
>>170167327
If skratti dies elemental dies as well. Two birds with one stone. And you can just air ele spam tbqh. But we're talking about anti-thug/SC, not about counters countering counters. And the ability to magic phase move is essential for good anti-SC.
