Not that anon, but when I want to make straight UVs I use the "follow active quad" unwrap. I learned it from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiQOHSzyooc

If you don't know programming and don't have money to pay programmers, you will not make a successful game.
It will take you years to learn programming well enough to make a good game. There are some extremely rare exceptions to this, but based on your post you aren't going to be one of them.
If you're prepared to spend actual years learning and practicing, then by all means. Otherwise, just stop.

Working from references is not the same as tracing other people's work you dumbo. Look up image sequences of the human running cycle, study what goes into a subject matter before you dive into it. Craft a shitty base and compare and contrast to your reference works in what you got right or wrong.

If it makes you feel any better, literally any concept artist or graphics designer in the AAA industry uses references on a DAILY basis. Visual designers are constantly looking up reference material for ideas. It's as simple as googling shit that sort of hearkens to what you're trying to do.

Don't know why I'm wasting my time telling you this to be honest, because you're probably gonna drop all this tomorrow because it's "too hard" or you hit your first case of artist's block or something.

So. Im a shit programmer, and ive watched a bunch of videos on how to get better, but that was a while ago.

I'm using Unity right now, and I'm generating a level with a genlevel.cs thats attached to the "levelgen" GameObject., then populating it with the player and enemies.

The Camera GameObject has a script that tells it to follow the preasigned gameobject - the player, it has some smoothing etc.

The problem is, I can pre-select the player GameObject since its not in the scene before runtime, and after its generated,... well, I don't know of an elegent way for the first script to tell the second - "Yo. you can focus the player now."

Thoughts?

you can try stuff like this:
>load the player and the camera at the same time but dont activate/spawn the player until the level is ready

Using a gravity vector
(General formula is: pos += (speed_scalar * direction_vector + gravity_vector) * delta_time)
Get the collision normal, point the gravity vector towards normal (gravity_vector = -collision_normal) and rotate the collision_normal 90 to left or right depending of which side is walking and apply to direction_vector. Use this with a solid collider and you have a npc walking around irregular walls.
There are some edge cases like walking in a spike ato top velocity, but that is fixed with some raycasting if is floating.

Does it count if I've spent the last two days staring at my IDE entering in pseudo code and then deleting it repeatedly? I've been trying to get a system together to test turn based RPG combat but I can't decide on stats and the math. Like it shouldn't be this hard, pick some stats, use them, test and add/remove shit as you test. I'm too fucking anal about stats though, its painful, I can't start a system without thinking about the systems I want to build on top of that system. The leveling and how it will work, feats/traits, how damage mitigation math should work, how crits should work. How different weapon types should utilize stats, class abilities, how all of this is going to translate to monsters. I fucking hate, I fucking despise minimalist stat systems. But making a non minimalist stat system from scratch is hard. I know the process should be iterative but still.

But still.

Yep, La-Mulana is great, but it doesn't shit all over Hollow Knight, if it's mediocre then La-Mulana is "okay" at best.

The point still being that if you think something like Hollow Knight is mediocre, all those great games couldn't even get to be "ok" at most. They aren't all that superior

Option A:
By making hundreds of bad games that you discard to learn how to make good games.

Option B:
By spending years on a game project that you constantly modify to try new things out and figure out what makes for a good game.

Option A is the less frustrating one as new projects always bring a motivation bonus.

Hollow Knight is completely derivative in the worst way and is utterly outperformed in every area that any of those games excels at. Being "passable" in every regard does not make a game worthwhile, it makes it mediocre. Hollow Knight is a by the numbers metroidvania with no noteworthy features or characteristics. It's Guacamelee 2.0 sans even slightly interesting combat.

If Axiom Verge's story is boring then Hollow Knight's is fucking comatose, to say nothing of the weapon "creativity" in Hollow Knight in comparison to Axiom Verge. Pitiful fucking argument.

Hollow Knight excels in what Super Metroid excels. Creating a belieavable and cohesive world that beckons you to explore it. To say that the story is fucking comatose just because it's not dumping plot all over your face means you have no grasp on sublety. The art and designs are great, the music is a bit too ambiance for my tastes, but still miles better than something like Valdis Story. The areas are all thematic and make sense in the context of the world, the enemies are all related to the places they are in, the NPCs are well written and charming, the combat, albeit simple, evokes feelings of something like Megaman Zero and makes so threatening enemies keep being threatening even after you're exploring the area for the 5th time. Comparing it to Guacamelee only means you cannot appreciate none of those things. You see, a game is more than just it's best mechanic, you gotta make sure everything fits together in a way that elevates it.
Calling me Lobotomized for liking Both La-Mulana and Hollow Knight is not an argument, sweetbuns.

What. Can't you just round your camera's position to the closest upscaled pixel based on their relative size in units? If pixels are 4x normal size and your display resolution is 1080p, you set your camera size to 4.5 so your viewport is 16 units by 9 units, and then one 'pixel' is 1/30th Unity units. Round the position of the camera/player/whatever in LateUpdate to the nearest 30th of a unit and it's pixel perfect.

What is this five cameras deal all about?

the problems with that method are
>allows non-integer scaling which will produce artifacts
>no control over aspect ratio
>ui will always be rendered at the screens native resolution rather than your games native resolution

my cameras are
>perspective camera for parallax effects
>normal 2d gameplay camera
>camera for zoom effects on the previous two
>ui camera
>final camera for upscaling the entire game by integer values
to be fair you can get away with 2 cameras and 1 render texture and still fix all the above issues i mentioned but i needed a few extra features and effects

I think the only thing I have disliked so far is the fact that you don't use ///Title for your code but have to do something like // @description Title or some shit instead which is a bit time consuming, here's hoping that doesn't stick

Do you have any way to measure when the generation is finished? If you had a trigger on the very last piece of level gen (like, I dunno, if you have a 50x50 grid and it reaches square [50,50]) you can still use the Invoke(). It'd just have to be on the very last piece.

>>169709547
The first option has some difficulties too because you have to deal with the player being in an invalid state briefly but its probably my recommendation at least for now (I'm using it too).

The second is actually the go to for most new programmers using Unity but they tend to leave memory leaks which often times are not so bad since in C# it won't case any bad accesses just wasted memory depending on what is referenced by your static data.

The third is basically where you have something that has references to the camera scene and to the thing that generates the level, then when level generation finishes it talks to the camera and whoever spawned the player and sets them all up. Theoretically this option can work like dependency injection which is good but might be difficult to get set up in practice.

Hmm. Masking Particles ? Never considered it before. Should probably google that. See if you can figure something out.

>>169709751
Sure. Obviously. I mean when the script attached to the level generator is done, it then spawns the enemies, and the player, and there's a separate function for each of those, and I can add more functions TO it... Problem is, I need to be able to at that point, from this script, tell a different cs script attached to the Camera game object to find the player, and target him.

On my last project when I started cross-referencing scripts all willy-nilly it became messy really quickly, so I'm trying to keep it to a minimum.

If you can reliably tag the player (in the player's Start/Awake function) you can use GameObject.FindObjectWithTag to easily summon him

Made a new Tileset for holes in the ground, this time 8way neighbor sensitive (the walls are just 4way)

and since that was such a finicky shitshow i made a system that takes care of mostly everything, for all the next tilesets i will make.

and the best thing was, it worked the first time i started the game up... i think that might be the second time ever for me something worked immediately without debugging.

Tiles are also transparent (the black parts) so i can maybe have some animated lava below it or something.

There is nothing wrong with this and these animations are captured by real actors so they are as realistic as they get. Nitpicking like this is really pathetic to be perfectly honest.

I think it's important to remember that a few seconds of botched animation isn't important to the quality of the whole game. You can polish your pixel art for days but you're at the point of diminishing returns.

>>
>>169722168
What separates good art from great art is not making mistakes and, when you do make mistakes, knowing how to turn those mistakes into successes.

An artist with no experience can spend 10,000 hours on a painting and wind up with mediocrity as they obsess over the particular pigments of an apple versus real life and what other artists are doing.

An artist with much experience looks at their painting and lets that tell them what the apple should look like.

It isn't about details -- it's about context and form.

The recap
>>
>>169722846
>It's about context and form

Actions deserve reactions, yes. That's one of the fundamental considerations for context. There's no context when a button just pops out of existence - there was no context for the reaction.

Now if the button vibrates for a moment and poofs out of existence leaving some particles behind - then you've successfully established context for that vanishing.

There's an order of importance for things. Of the highest importance are the things the character and player are directly interacting with. Forget about making it look good - first make stuff the player directly interacts with responsive.

I am an aspiring indie developer. I want to make games, I want to entertain people. Day like any other, I was scrolling through 4chan's amateur game development general. Ton of things, ton of shit, but then, a certain post piqued my attention.

The attached picture, Consider.jpg had a woman on it, pointing at her chin and looking at the side as if she was thinking. As a well-mannered gentleman I am, I knew I was obliged to read the post that had such beauty pasted with it. I lean towards the screen, squint my eyes and start reading.

>Here's a fun exercise!
Huh? My interest was going through the roof at that point. I kept reading.

>About how many active gamedevs do you think there have been in the last 10 years?
I was never a fan of riddles, I always preferred more straight-forward intellectual challenges. How many of them could there be? Video games are a very new medium, but there is a ton of people working on them all around the world, from Canada to Argentina, from Portugal to Japan. It had to be a very big number! I decided to continue reading.

>About how many gamedevs active in the last 10 years would you say have "made it"?
At this exact point I felt a chill going down my spine. There are so many game developers out there, but how many of them have I actually heard of? How many of their games remain burrowed under hundreds, no, thousands of very similar games, never to be played by anyone ever again? Never to bring any joy to anybody? Never to be cherished? Never to be loved?

>Now divide that second number, by that first number and tell me what you get!
>Do you think you will "make it"?
My forehead was covered in cold sweat. I got chicken skin. In the sea of incredibly similar games, what could be my chances of success? I realized that I wasn't the only one. I wasn't unique. There were a ton of people just like me. And their plans... They all crashed and burned, as no-one wanted to open their wallet to buy their games.

really makes me think

If you're calculating your odds of "winning" a game which is not zero sum and has a massive sliding scale of skill levels you should just admit you're not good at what you do and give up. You're using a thinly veiled attempt at reason and logic to excuse what is actually a psychological pattern of being a loser.

A craftsman in any trade does not simply give up because other craftsmen are out there, that's not how life works. Even the shitty crafstmen manage to find work and amazingly enough the craftsman with increasing experience and skill get even more work.

Isn't it neat how the world isn't a black and white practice in autism where everyone cancels eachother out? It's really hard for some people to admit that they are just afraid of failing because they are certain (because they know) they aren't good enough to get anywhere without putting in years of hard work and learning and applied practice. And they're just plain afraid. Like little babies. Leave gamedev to the doers. Anyone can be a wallflower.

Here's another (You), parasite.
>>
>>169723125
I read something In relation to this somewhere.

Hard work and talent isn't enough to /make it/. Thousands of talented/hardworking people try to get into hollywood but only a handful truly makes it.

What you need, aside from either hard work or talent, is simply luck. Without it, maybe you can keep on pushing forward but it's going to be a long, painful push.

It's not like luck trumps everything though. Opportunities often come by but without the proper skills, these mostly just passes by. If you have talent or hard work, you'll have the knowledge on how to make it yours and eventually, actually succeed.

Or something like that.

Your fruitless and futile gamedevving isn't in vain, anon. You'll get your luck some day.

The numbers are there whether we address them or not. But go ahead and pick a few cherries like notch, molyneux, toby fox, ... and keep pretending like that's something other than a complete anomaly in the hordes of game developers.

Of course it depends on how you view success. In my view as a hobbyist uninterested in monetizing my hobby, it's very easy to "make it" and I have a high chance of making it.

I've been getting an increasing average number of sales per day
For it being a small hobby project that I'd have made regardless, I would regard it as a win.

The asset is out on the store now, it'll keep making me money for a good long while because it's generalized enough to stay relevant. It may make less in a day a year from now than it does today, but I'm putting out other assets/projects spawned from personal projects now.

Earning some money off of your hobby is better than earning no money off of your hobby, especially if the amount you're making is equivalent to working a full-time, 16 dollar an hour job. I can only assume that unless I majorly fuck up and neglect to respond to report emails, that sales for this asset will continue while I put out others.

So I don't know. What currently motivates me is to have the skill to make games, even if it's only with boxes. So when my kid comes to me, "hey, dad, could you turn my drawing into a game", I could do just that. She won't care about rixels and mixels, demographic groups or code optimization, she will be just happy that her figures are react to wasd and jump around, killing bad guys. Guy you just responded to. Not actual programmer yet so maybe it's different for others but this is my path.

First time I really got into coding, I tried codeacademy and it put me off by how unhelpful the actual site was.

Then I started reading about c++ on the cplusplus org site and that helped but I got lazy and disinterested and stopped reading it.

Now I'm taking a community college class in c++ and enjoying it. About 2-3 years after reading up on c++

I know most of the basics (stuff we're on right now) due to cplusplus.

I did try codeacademy to get a refresher before I started the class and it still wasn't much different than from when I first tried it years ago

Everyone is going to tell you different things, different things work for different people, all of us in the internet age have ADHD so the fact is you're probably going to be learning from a lot of different sources and jumping back and forth between them.

Here is something you can have open all the time
https://repl.it
Pick the language you're learning, it will load a compiler for you. Every time you learn something new? Get it working in the compiler first, before moving on. Then experiment and play with it. Try building a function that uses it. Now change up the arguments the function takes. Now build a function for each different thing and have them feeding arguments back and forth from one to the other.

This is how you improve, by building your own stuff with the things that you learn and experimenting.

The most important thing to learn for programming honestly has nothing to do with typing code. You need to be able to take a problem, specify it in a detailed manner, divide it into sub problems, and repeat until you have many small, tractable things to do instead of a single behemoth.

Many good programming practices stem from dividing problems up into little pieces. Some of the small solutions may be reused to solve other problems. You wouldn't get that if you tried to solve the big problem all at once. Small solutions also help to avoid big spaghetti messes, and so are easier to modify and also understand when coming back to them later.

Orphaned packets sometimes get stuck but that's a fix for another day.

Do you really want to waste people's time?

Just having addicting gameplay is not all one should strive for.

Later, people will maybe hate themselves for playing all this shitty life wasters, and imagine your game being one of those games.

You could freely jump in Elder Scroll's games. Are they platformers?
A game only becomes a platformer when jumping around a level is one of the main methods of achieving victory in the game.

In Skyrim for example you could probably beat the whole game without jumping. In Banjo Kazooie jumping is a fundamental mechanic to progress in the game.

So is everything just a waste of time?
Going to the Theatre, going to the cinema, going to a concert. Playing music together with friends. Writing a book. Reading a book.

I think that's life. What else would life be about? Working, eating, sleeping? Nah, life is what happens in between. If reading a book is something worthwhile and enriching, then an interactive experience or videogame can be too. It's just that not all videogames are.

It's just an other medium. Sure, people can possibly create shit with it. And they really do.

But it's just a medium, what you do with it depends on you.

>there are people ITT who are making games for money
>there are people ITT who are making games in the hope of having lots of people play them

Make games because you like making games. Anything else is wrong.

Personally I hope to be one of those devs that works on the same game forever making steady improvements with a small but passionate fanbase who have wanted a game like the one I am making for a long time. Best comparison to an actual game would be Overgrowth. Not because my game is anything like it but because it's an autistically detailed game that has been in development for several millennia.

I don't expect that to happen, nor am I really working towards or for that, but that's the pipe dream.

>so it is very repetitive and if i learn all the small patterns i can reuse them and know exactly what they are supposed to do and then how to debug it?
No, that's not what I meant at all. That's what "the industry" teaches code monkeys to do, because it's easier to get them to regurgitate design patterns after the actual software engineers and designers do the hard work of breaking the problem down. Design patterns are antiquated, most are either pointless now that lots of languages have more functional features or we've figured out that they just plain suck (like singletons). They (as well as overuse of OOP) only work in an environment where everything that ends up in production is heavily planned - not really an option for game development.

In c++ how should i properly save maps?
So far i been saving them without any format using std:ofstream, dangerous and easy to modify even with a notepad++, but it worked.
What's a better way of doing it? It's mostly numbers that my code interpretes to generate the maps.

Can I get some help here:

I need some help using Game Maker.

https://www.reddit.com/r/gamemaker/comments/5wqgc2/power_up_timed_respawn_after_use/

Basically, I created 2 animated sprites and 2 stationary single frame sprites. I can get the normal sprite and animation to work, but I can't get the sprites to change to the PowerUp sprites. It always stays the normal sprite, even though the power up is in effect.

>pic unrelated
>>
>>169732276
You're clearly a beginner so I don't want to be soulcrushing, but that sprite needs a lot, A LOT, of work. Again, not trying to be soulcrushing but I don't think you're getting any replies because your spriting is at the point where it's difficult to point at any one thing and say "fix this". Your character is flat, his body remains almost totally stationary while his limbs move around it in an attempt to convey movement, the list goes on and a more accomplished spriter would be able to tell you more.

Does he feel better, after he played the game? Did it make him happy? Is he more chilled or even a slightly better person after he played it?
Some games promote bad, selfish behavior, and some games may promote good behavior. Maybe it teaches a view on life that helps the player to handle his own life.

The philosophy of the maker shines through the things he makes. If it's a book or if it's a videogame, it doesn't matter. It can be a boardgame or whatever.

First of all, your code is asinine. Second of all, don't use GM's built in timers, they're sure to trip up beginners; create a variable and decrement it every frame. Third of all, and this isn't related to your current issue but you're so green that I'm betting I should mention it anyway: never fucking ever use GM's built in "solid" functionality.

I don't think I've ever seen code that uses !(sprite) to check whether an object's sprite index is not that sprite. Try changing that to the more explicit sprite_index != (sprite).

So you have an object.

It can be connected to another object, or not, and many of them can form a chain.

What's an intelligent way to assign them their order in the chain? e.g. the 5th one in any chain has a value of 5.

I'm specifically addressing the part of your code where you check the hspeed and whether the sprite is currently NOT the power up sprite before you set the sprite to an idle or movement sprite.
>if (hsp == 0) and (!spr_characterPU1) { sprite_index = spr_character; }
I don't know whether (!spr_characterPU1) evaluates the same way as (sprite_index != spr_characterPU1), which is what you're attempting to check. If you're following a tutorial then maybe both of them do evaluate the same way and there's some other issue, I dunno, but either way I kinda doubt that it's a good tutorial if it's recommending that you use alarms in the way it's teaching you to.

As far as a good "variable label", I go for explicit clarity when I'm naming mine. If it's a timer for the duration of a power up, then power_up_timer is what I'd go far.

As far as good practice for designating animations, that's extreme case specifc and I'm a pretty huge scrub myself, but in this specific case you could use the previously discussed power_up_timer to see whether you should be using a normal sprite or a power up sprite, i.e.
if (hspeed != 0) && (power_up_timer > 0) {sprite_index = spr_charactermovePU}

Prepare for someone to moan about using pastebin again.

So when you're using a variable as a timer you'll have the decrement code in your step event
>if timer_variable > 0 { timer_variable -= 1}
You've gotta keep in mind where in the step event you want to have it though, because code within an event is executed in the order that it's written, which is something that catches beginners off guard sometimes, even though it seems extremely obvious.

>>
>>169739731
The face/torso is quite strong, and the horns are pretty good. The arms and legs are comparatively weak, losing the iconographic graven quality of the torso and head. I think you should be more judicious in the economy of your lines in those areas. On the face, lines terminate in service of some greater pattern, whereas on the hands and in the bent legs they don't, they just end because you needed to differentiate a finger or the bend of a calf in front of a thigh.

Well it basically starts with two variables that store the inventory's current capacity, in terms of width and height. When you open the inventory, the game builds a ds_grid (a sort of specialized matrix native to GM:S), and populates it by reading your inventory and marking cells as either free (-1) or as the inventory ID that's occupying them (0-100)

Your inventory itself is stored in an array of "slots", that stores the item ID, it's x/y/rotation/size on the grid, and then specific item information, such as damage/capacity on weapons.

When you're moving/placing items, the game is simply checking a rectangular region of cells on the grid for the max value, and if it's anything above -1, the game knows that somewhere in your selection, there's something in the way and you can't place there.

Ah, well if you're unable to remember a pixel's alpha from last frame we're SOL I guess. I made a shader that measured the speed of individual pixels relative to the camera, stored it in a matrix and used this information to play with properties, for example emissivity. I was trying to replicate relativistic redshifting.

Anyway, I'd be surprised if you have no way at all to store pixel information. Stuff like motion blur is done on lots of games and usually requires to store data like that... Although most 2D games probably just use blurred afterimages.

Well, now that I think about it, this would probably be overkill. It still looks good lol.

Another factor is that in Da Vinci's day art and such had a market demand. There were no cameras or paint sprayers or pre fabricated designs. You had to hire asses to make it on the spot. Videogames are superfluous to society and will never be in demand, much like modern artists.

Modern art is about expressing yourself, da Vinci was doing a real job.

Damn right. Making shaders is kinda infuriating for this reason. Saying I "learned" shaders is kinda like saying an elementary school kid learned calculus.

Basically like anything gamedev related, it's a whole lot of googling.

Actually a big reason I did the unity->unreal switch is that I was sick of this annoying shader language, I wanna try unreal's flowcharts.

Also, I really liked finding this page, but some of these might not apply to you depending on your shader language.

But without OOP... there are no classes!
>>
>>169745635
I don't have to prove shit, you either play games to see what makes people like them, or you will be scratching your head for next decade or two wondering what exactly are you doing wrong, before giving up and roping yourself in the attic.
>>
>>169745583
>>169745736
Say if you have a tank in a game and you write it purely with functional programming and you want to write another tank character with all the same features but have it changed around with different properties. You would have to rewrite your code and it would be all messy. Using OOP it would make it much easier to implement new properties and features.
>>
>>169745986
wrong
>>
>>169746017
1. Not-OOP does not mean pure functional programming.
2. What the fuck are you on?
>>
>>169746126
So, are you saying you always need a little bit of OOP? Not same guy.
>>
>>169746257
No.
>>
>>169746017
You store those properties as data and have branching in your update. Is that really so hard to figure out?
>>
>>169746126
From someone not involved in this argument, what do you aim to achieve through this discussion? The dude is clearly autistic beyond repair or yanking your chain. Why keep replying?
>>
>>169746310
You mean like... Storing that data inside a container of sorts? Maybe an Object?
>>
>>169746358
Because I don't want people to actually think that they need to use OOP. It's snake oil at its finest and is a lot more likely to prevent you finishing a game than it is going to help.
>>
>>169746447
tutorials use oop
>>
>>169746436
Multiple pieces of data next to each other is not an object.

>>169746541
So? Hopefully you are reading the tutorial to learn the concept and not copy paste the code.
>>
>>169746436
And have my heap littered with thousands of dangling references necessitating garbage collection? No, that's madness. You store the data in a struct of arrays.

You are using C aren't you? You're never going to see the truth unless you program in C.
>>
>>169746447
you can't make a good game without OOP

what exactly is the structure of a non-OOP game in GameMaker for example
how I keep track of the actors and shit and what exactly are the advantages of not doing OOP
>>
>>169747004
It's simple.

Have no game and you have no actors to keep track of.
>>
>>169736841
I envy you, my friend. I wish I had a game made, even if it was as bad as yours.
>>

it's a meme
>>
>>169747004
You can't. You must make your own engine.
>>
Huh, as noob who just walked into this thread and hasn't made game yet, my takeaway from this discussion is that I should make my game with a functional language. Alright, I'm gonna go install P Y T H O N boys, see yall when I progress!

Would making a lewd text game belong here because its in development, or in the hentai games general? Asking for someone on /v/

both

Oh boy, this conversation again. Guess I'll wait until tomorrow to post progress. I wonder why good devs don't stick around here.

GM isn't particularly object oriented though. You have "objects" which are superficially like classes and "instances" which are superficially like objects but there's no methods, no encapsulation, no polymorphism, etc.

Generally, though, if you want to do everything nicely procedural/functional, you have to enginedev.

Why does this prevent you posting progress?

Hence why he asked what the structure of a game in a non-OOP engine like GM would be. Also you're completely forgetting parentage.

Oh right, they did add in the worst part of OOP while getting rid of all the good stuff. And I guess it sort of has methods, but you can't define your own.

There is no such thing as textual pornography,
if you're writing an erotic novel, go to lit, this isn't fucking 80's, video games have visuals in them.
>>
>>169748037
i see a lot of "porn" "games" that are only text...like, instead of a pic of a hot girl, here's a picture of text to fap to, you just have to imagine the hot girl...it makes no fucking sense but of course it is very popular in furry culture because we have to prove our autism time and time again
