I haven't read ITTBG, but this story doesn't seem too hard to follow. Unknown (better called NAME) is our meta-partner. They're the means by which players control player characters, or in this case living creatures from an alternate universe. Our "sin" is most likely thinking that resetting and erasing aren't the same thing. You can't change the past, because you go to a new world entirely to do it. Standard time travel rules.
