The most important thing is that free players lack is artifact authorization. You should invest your cartel money into that if you plan to stay preferred for a while and going preferred is the bare minimum to enjoy the game anyways.
They can't get good gear.

If Ch1 is 1 year, then each planet is about 3 months, and each individual mission is about 3 weeks.
I guess when you're breezing through shit you don't realise that your next outpost isn't really a 2-minute ride on a speeder like it is in-game, but often a cross-continent journey, and that your superiors' intel isn't updated instantly as gameplay pacing implies, but rather gathered over time, just as it is in real life.
