You probably had weaknesses the AI would see as a window of opportunity, just like they do when they attack other AIs. In fact in my games I seldom get attacked at all, unless I play minors amid majors, like byzantine waiting to be crushed by ottomans as the best example.

I have seen Germany stuck conquering Norway and Denmark for years while USSR rapes the entire front.

One time they had so many troops in Norway that they just consumed all the supply and hence couldn't advance and yet they kept on shipping more troops to Trondheim like it would fix the issue.
