Repostan for helpful hints:
Need help thinking of ways for my characters to gain cash to buy items and stuff with.

This is an overly complicated lewd point and click adventure scifi game with a loose follow-it-when-you-want-to main plot and lots of excuse smut porn.

I refuse to have combat (that isnt point and click and instant resolve depending on choices you made earlier) or other sorts of repetitive grinding actions (looking at you Girl's Life) in it because I hate combat and grinding makes me reeeee. It isn't fun, and there should be a way to get what I want that is fun.

So far I'm thinking of having a few jobs like bartending/etc you can do on each planet with no consequences once or twice before they're done, but you can still over-extend yourself, at which point there will be other "jobs" but those will cause problems immediately or later on for you.

I'm worried that doing this will make it too hard for players to find a balance. Especially since some of the events are random and require repeated luck of the draw attempts that use cash in order to trigger. I know it would piss completionists off, but the game is built so that it has 3 paths to run through in the first place.

so agdg, I'd like help foster a good community, by reply to progress posts etc.
but desu, 90% of the time when I see a progress post I look at it, think it's cool, and continue scrolling since there isn't really much other then "looks neat anon" / "good work" etc. and that isn't really that interesting and don't really create a discussion or conversation in any way.
in that sense, I can see how shitposting is more engaging for some users..
so my question is this, yesdevs, what (you)s do you want on a post that says "I did x today"?

You have 300 characters or less to introduce and sell your game.

Should you explain its game mechanics or focus on the setting? Maybe list a few more popular games with similar mechanics?

this might stupid but why can't an array of generic objects be serialized?

I need it serialized because I want to display it in a custom unity editor window. is that not possible?

It depends on what's the selling point of your game. If it's gameplay, then gameplay. If it's setting then setting.

Not sure this is a good idea for a pitch. If people ask "oh, like X?" then of course you tell them "Yeah sure". But the association should not be made by you first.

>The infamous, tough-as-nails platformer comes to Steam with a playable Head Crab character (Steam-exclusive)!

When the existence of a mysterious 3rd dimension is revealed to him, [Character] is sent out on a journey that will take him to the very end of time and space. Use your ability to navigate 3D structures from 4 distinct classic 2D perspectives.

>An old-fashioned beat 'em up with big doses of adrenaline and trippiness, somewhere between the classic style of Streets of Rage and the ultra-violence of Hotline Miami. Set in a cold, ruthless Soviet Union, [Game] aims to conjure up anxiety, unease, and drug-addled frenzy.

I know, faggot, but I can't help you if I don't know what's inside of it. If it's a bunch of custom classes you created, a bunch of loose strings and ints, or whatever.

>>168916537
The witness one is great, because the game pretends to be a simple island with puzzles until you start digging into it.
SMB's is trash, it's based on previous recognition, and it wasn't even that famous before pc.
Fez's is the best one from this list. It's a bit of gameplay and a bit of game feel.
Mother Russia Bleeds' is second best. Sadly it does the "it's like X and Y" part.
TF2's is awful.
>>
>>168916048
Here's how I'd like to present mine:

[GAME] is a fast-paced shooter where action and tight movement mechanics take center stage. The world is a nightmarish hellscape of pregnant robots, man-eating worms and science fiction weaponry. Travel through the gory maw of a giant beast in one moment, and skip along palm-shaded paradise beach the next. The world is yours to explore - and fight!
Tired of being a lone madman? Join in online tournaments, and prove that you're the best bounty hunter the galaxy has to offer! Local play with friends is also possible, and cross-play between 3DS and PC (hopefully)
>>
>>168916843
you mean what are all the possible things it could contain?

right now, probably just ints and strings

I might add in custom classes at some point, or maybe just reference them by an int ID if that turns out to be easier
>>
>>168916048
To me, word pitches are useless. They simply don't work. My game pitch would be two images.
Either way, you need to showcase what makes your game unique. That's why most hype devs say dumb stuff like "billions of planets" or "see that mountain, you can climb it", when none of those things actually make the game good or are representative of the experience.
>>
>>168916537
All of those sound like distilled shit to me, desu

Here it is.

International Bounty Hunter
https://youtu.be/N2SY4hPpbtY
- I really like the "retro" visuals. Excellent use of low poly.
- The deadline was always before the current time, so I got the feeling that there's no way to win or it's a bug. Maybe this means that I have one full week for each case? Dates next to the day and the hour and minute would be useful.
- After I accept a case, some useful information will be missing. Like I know I'm supposed to search for a female, but if I would have not payed attention at accepting, then I wouldn't know it.
- Sometimes the wrong pronoun is used. I'm searching for a female, but in the same sentence they refer to her as "she" and then as "he" or "his" etc.
- I couldn't figure out what the black market is for.
- I couldn't figure out how to use some clues. Martin Luther King? Is she an afro then? She was listening to classical music. Formal clothing maybe? The only thing I found match for was the hair color and tennis. Other than this, I would like to guess these things, but maybe then some build up or explanation would be good, just for the first few cases.
- After I've narrowed down the list of peoples to one, I didn't know how to catch her or progress further.
- You refer to a location as "Location 1", but while traveling, all the places have actual names.
- Sometimes scrolling didn't work, like in the Black Market. Maybe you didn't optimize the game for 800x600?
- Overall, the game has a good premise, but requires a lot of polish. Even if I usually hate tutorial levels, I would have been happy for some hand holding at the beginning.

that fucks up my whole system though, I guess I should have explained:

the objects[] is basically a list of parameters that gets sent to a script which contains a biiiiig list of functions that I use on my game

the main function is set up like
>void Main(params object[] args) { }
so that it can take that array, whatever it is, then pass it to whatever sub-methods might need it... if that makes sense

Haven't quite landed on a decision when it comes to pace/tone, but perhaps we'll make the singleplayer that way, and leave the really action-y stuff for the multiplayer bit (like Metroid Prime Hunters does).

Any musicbro here?

I dream of making my own FL studio shit, but I suck at music and have no clue.

So, I bough a harmonica and been two days improvising with it meanwhile I wait for the bus between college and home.

So, is better to practice 10 minutes at minimal everyday than having just one big session just once in a week?

Also, is improvising better to develop my musical intelligence than learning to play songs?

basically I have
>a bunch of MapEvents attached to game objects in each scene

Harmonica fag here. Harmonica isn't really the best to learn music, mate. You need to buy a few harmonicas in different keys, and learn to bend the accidentals, and embouchures, and to transpose shit, instead of leaving aside the instrument quirks and focusing on just music theory.
Just get a cheap keyboard. It'll be better on the long run.
>Also, is improvising better to develop my musical intelligence than learning to play songs?
Learning is always better, but harmonicas are more suited for improv. Again, keyboards.
>>
>>168918851
What?
Because he could get DMCA'd?
How is that going to hurt him enough?
>>
>>168919221
Reminder that winds are useless for learning theory.

Practice daily, and practice both. Analyse the songs you work on (which can be done simply on paper by looking at the notes they're made of)
>>
>>168919221
In my opinion, playing everyday for 10 minutes is much better, than playing 70 mintues once a week. Reason is simple - your brain (during sleep) gets those "data" you have learned collocate (if that's a correct word). You know, brain just get's used to things easier over night, then over 30 minutes of break. And I'm saying this as a amateur guitarist. It's much easier to listen to song, play it a bit (even with mistakes), and then next day try it again, than just play it again and again for few hours. So yes, it's better to train every day.

When it comes to "how to learn", the easiest way of learning (without learning scores and shit) is to play some music from pc/phone in the background and just try to improvise to it. As long as it sounds ok, it's good. But I would recommend learning playing other songs. It gives us some basics of composition etc. And in my experience, composing the songs have thought me the most.

Also, as anon >>168919645
said - harmonica is kinda hard way to start playing music. Try cheap keyboard or midi controller for PC (you can actually use midi controller later in FL studio to make creating music much easier, than if you would need to use normal keyboard/mouse). Keys are the easiest way, next to a guitar.

No. A piano playing in 12 tone rows and a piano playing a cyclical chord progression won't sound alike at all, timbre aside.

Robots require more underlying logic than people, humans, though. People all have the same basic muscle groups and structure on the inside; that makes it trivial to draw their basic shape, and you focus on the exterior instead.

Robots are all vastly different, even the humanoid shaped ones, and they require a lot more thought. Which gears go where, and what do they do? Are these particular wires exposed or not, and if so, why? How would a robot's legs move: where are the pivoting joints and mechanisms? What is this robot's main function, and how that shape its overall structure?

I'm not a native english speaker, so I'm having trouble giving you an example, but go for something like "in a world long lost abandoned, where the passage of time has blurred the lines between organisms and machinery, creating a hellscape of abominations"

>>168920309
Let me insist on the cheap keyboard part for learning. Seriously.
>isn't music a single unique language and every instrument simply is like a diferent brush in photoshop?
You know how many people started programming in C, then moved to some OOP lang, and once they understand programming they can move to any language or engine only learning the particulars?
And you know how many people start with Unity and they end up being unity developers because they only understand the unity way of doing things and are never confortable with other engines?
The harmonica is akin to unity. It's really easy to make it sound good, It's easy to improvise, you just have to blow anywhere to get a I chord, it's a "pick up and sound like you know how to use this" thing. If you practice improvising harmonica every day, you're going to be a great harmonica player. Not a musician.

Yeah, no. Robots aren't real, and there's no natural point of comparison, so you get away with anything.
Literally boxes slapped together.
No problem at all.

Also, for animating, just make all limbs separate objects and you don't even have to deal with weight painting.
>>
>>168920309
Well, first thing - harmonica has a little number of keys. I mean sounds by that or whatever you call it. Second thing, it's sound are not so "pure" so they might be harder for someone new. And the last thing - keys are harder to reach on harmonica, than on guitar/keyboard.

Check out things like Akai LPK 25 or M-Audio Keystation Mini 32. Those might not be quality stuff and they have little number of keys, but are cheap as fuck (about 50$) and can help you learn a lot. And can be used in FL Studio ofc.

>look up what a chord is
I understand music follow chord progressions where all the notes in the melody (the voices) usually only play one note from the chord.

But I meant the three note or four note small unit that has an unique form and is like a word.

dunno how to explain it.

>cadences
isn't a cadence the end phrase of a melody?

>A piano playing
For me, each instrument, VST or shit is like a diferent instrument in drawing, be it a pencil, a pen, a marker, an oil brush and so on.

dunno if the analogy is correct.

Another thing I've notice is that the keys and scales are like color pallethes, be it warm or cold colors.

Also, rythm tend to gives the style of the sound, like a three note rythm gives a military march versus a slow two notes rythm gives a sad feeling.

Dunno if all that is basic stuff, and dunno the names, but is mostly shit I've found by simply trying to improvise with the harmonica.

You have one type trying to do the work of 50. Instead of attaching a MapEvent with type = "teleport" and args = [100, 200], attach a TeleportMapEvent with x = 100 and y = 200. Then you can have TeleportMapEvent.RunEvent actually do the teleport, instead of doing some overly-generic reflective dispatch to the teleport code.

>I understand music follow chord progressions where all the notes in the melody (the voices) usually only play one note from the chord.
>But I meant the three note or four note small unit that has an unique form and is like a word.
It's stupid but it still counts as a chord, like if you play C-E-G-B, then it "works" just like a Cmajor7.

>Another thing I've notice is that the keys and scales are like color pallethes, be it warm or cold colors.
Keys not so much (nowadays) because of the advance of 12TET tuning, but different scales will sound entirely different. But sad/happy ? That's more a matter of how you write with them.
>Also, rythm tend to gives the style of the sound, like a three note rythm gives a military march versus a slow two notes rythm gives a sad feeling.
that's just because that's how they're most often used.
2/4 can sound upbeat if you play it that way, 3/4 is used for Waltz too, just like scales, the meter doesn't define anything any mood.

A MapEvent could be a teleport event or a give-money event or a damage event or any of 47 other things. A TeleportMapEvent is exactly one thing and it's completely clear what it is.

>if I separated my MapEvents into 50 different script and had to attach a different script to each event on the Map in the scene... god that would take forever and make building maps so much more difficult...
I've never used unity so maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by "attaching a script to an event". But I would expect that attaching a TeleportMapEvent and setting x to 100 and y to 200 is basically the same amount of work as attaching a MapEvent and setting type to "teleport" and args to [100, 200].

could explain maybe why its bad? does it take more resources? or it just bad practice for clarity?

Unity has GameObjects in scenes, which have "scripts" (a c# file with one class) attached to them.

so for each of 50 classes for eventTypes like teleport, door, talk, gold, etc I would need 50 separate c# text files each with one class. and for each map event GameObject I place in a Scene I would have to attach one or more of those 50 scripts to it, and it would take forever...

basically its way easier to have one MapEvent class in Unity... dunno how to explain it better if you haven't used Unity

basically if there isn't a performance or speed or some other problem difference I'm going to continue to do it my way because it makes it way easier for building levels/maps

Actually it's a lot easier to animate with a rig than it is without. You can just rig it so that each mesh is fully weighted to a single bone so there's no deformation if you don't need it.

>>
>>168917831
My biggest tip is to not focus so much on learning a particular language. You can learn syntax just from reading the documentation, the important part is learning the mindset behind coding. Being able to abstract a problem and work top-down is the most important skill you can develop as a programmer, so focusing on that early is gonna make everything else much easier. What I did to develop that was writing down my pseudocode with a pencil and paper, starting with the most abstract parts and gradually revising and narrowing the focus until I had everything mapped out. Once you have the logic of the problem down, it's pretty simple to "plug in" real code and it saves literally dozens of hours of debugging compared to coding on the fly.
>>

Bad for clarity, basically. The reflection-based approach never makes explicit the requirement that if "type" is "teleport" then "arguments" must contain two numbers, and so on. So it's easier to make mistakes than if you had a TeleportMapEvent with explicit "x" and "y" fields.

Since apparently MapEvent is a GameObject and the more specific event types would need to be scripts that are attached to GameObjects, then maybe this is not a great solution after all. But please don't take this to mean that your current reflection-based solution is a good one. Go look up the "command pattern" instead, and see if you can adapt it to Unity.

im not selling a single/finite thing to bidders competing with one another for it. so it's not an auction silent or otherwise.
in reality it's a pay-what-you-want with a minimum that the buyer hasnt been informed of prior to purchase and is upgraded each time a successful purchase occurs. i think it's a super interesting concept and it works exactly as intended in relation to achievement hunters... to scare the shit out of them, thinking every other achievement hunter is a piece of shit just like they are who would want to raze the earth with a high bid so no one else can have the achievement.

Aseprite comes with good presets. Good ones are edg16/edg32 & db32
Also: http://paletton.com/
Pick a hue, then go to the presets. However this is only gud for monocromatic palettes + contrasts. Usually going for hueshift adds really nicely to the overall feel of your colors.

1. agents
it's the current year, sim city is 3 years old by now, anything less is unacceptable

2. no stat boosts
nothing bores me more than building something that makes a number in a diagram go up and nothing else

3. actual challenge
the secret of sim city 2000/2013 is that there isn't a steady state ever, something is always going wrong somewhere, you improve in one spot it fucks up something else, constant balancing act, this is where skylines fails HARD

unfortunately most people just like screenshot simulators like cities xl and skylines

basically: you can't really beat sim city, and you should probably replay it seriously and then reconsider

inb4 some child replies because the traffic was too hard and having to cooperate with other cities made him feel uncomfortable

SC4 is pretty challenging and it also can be considered a "screenshot sim"
IMO there's nothing wrong with prioritizing trying to make a beautiful city.

I wanted to try a grid-based game in Unity, but with grids like in Frogger 2, where each tile doesn't necessarily fall perfectly on an xy grid.

The best example of what I'm talking about is here, where you can see Frogger goes up the curved ramp by only pressing Left.
https://youtu.be/_GwHkuLWFAk?t=5m47s
(5:47)

Everything I look up about using nodes seems to be about using strictly xy placement, unless I was going to make each node its own object which sounds very un-optimal. What's a good way to handle this?

Biggest issue with SC2013 is the small map size and agents not having permanent home/job locations desu.
>>
>>168940108
sc4 is pretty dull, it's not as bad as xl, but pretty close, I think it's because it doesn't have much charm and it's still just statistics simulator

consider that most peoples favorite sim city is 3000 aka ezmodo
just casuals

I think cities in sim city end up being more beautiful, because you can actually watch them working. I've probably spent 80% of my time in it just watching something I built working, or not working as it may be

you can zoom in and see the little neighbourhoods, the busy main streets, how the economy flows, how poop flows back up someones toilet etc. that's beautiful

>small map size
like I said, someone is going to reply because cooperating made him feel uncomfortable

it's pretty obvious that the small maps were intentional, so that you can't build a huge super city, you're going to run out of space and have to choose what to use it for, and how that works with cities around you

even if you're just playing single player, that adds another dimension of play with commuters, trading resources and all that, cities don't exist in a vacuum irl, so why in the game?

>permanent job locations
if someone hadn't told you, would you have noticed? it'd just be extra cpu overhead, and picking the closest location is probably part of the design, so that people will "move" their homes closer to work, which is more realistic in a way, people do tend to take the path of least resistance
the most autistic complaint you could possibly have, unless you spend several hours following a single sim around, why bother? it's not that kind of game

skyscrapers don't get built in an hour either, a day in the game obviously isn't equivalent to a real world day, get over it

like I said, you're supposed to run out of space so that you have to choose what to use the space for, that IS to do with cooperation, since you then have to consider how your city fits into the region and with the neighbour cities instead of just doing everything yourself

the space isn't that restrictive either, unless you're only interested in playing screenshot simulator, I don't remember ever being too annoyed by it

but that's what people want to do, they don't care about the simulation, or the challenge, or representing aspects of city building through gameplay, they just want to build something big and post a screenshot of it to normiebook and get mad at EA because muh memes

Anyone else here like how fucking lighter Unity is? I was fucking with UE4 for so long and goddamn is that thing bloated. Unity is so light. All projects start the same and you can just import whatever scripts and basic materials you want. It really makes it easier how games are made instead of obstructing my view with all this shit.

And it's not only the demo content I'm talking about too. It's also the library sizes. Monobehavior is so small compared to UE4s equivalent and goddamn I just like how quick the game builds and launches. Definitely sticking with Unity.

Only thing I don't really get is where the game rules are. In UE4, you have a file that defines the game rules but it's not apparent in Unity. I think the prefab defines the main camera as the fpscamera (I'm modifying their sample fpschar script), but I have no clue.

Not the anon you replied to, but when I first started using unity, I was coming from a C++ desktop app development bg, as well as a PHP web dev bg. Compared to that shit, the feedback in unity is almost instant and I NEVER want to go back to slow as shit compilation.

>>168942779
I can find examples of horribly written programs in most languages, why should unity be any different for games? Furthermore, the whole point of using someone else's engine is so you don't have to kill yourself engine deving.

Yeah, it's lightning fast development. I actually originally got an SSD just to make UE4 compile faster and it was still a slow piece of shit. Yeah, some variable changes are instant in the editor, but anything outside of a var value change you need to recompile.

Though I don't like how with Unity the scripts are a tool of the editor instead of the editor being a tool of the project solution. It's just weird for me not to see a main function.

>>168942779

Yeah, it defines the entire game mode. Defines camera, defines player controller, defines everything. It's kind of the launch point for how the game plays out. In Unity, I'm not really sure what defines anything. I guess you just attach scripts to whatever ends the level or game, but it's just irregular for me.

Anybody willing to help out a beginner?

I have a script in Unity where when the player touches a trigger object it is supposed to appear above their heads for a few seconds like in MGS. I have a gameobject child-ed to the player that stays above the player. This is meant to be the coordinates for the trigger object to appear. However, the trigger object just teleports to the game object attached the player but it doesn't stay there.

I would go for slightly more upbeat music, open showing the battle system, then cut back to walking through your environments. So much walking in the beginning is not an attention-grabber. The heavy shift to darker elements in the center was a little off. It should be more of "Did I just see that?" or omit a lot of it from your trailer. The dialogue display right after was great though. You ended well explaining what the game was and having the cat emote at the screen.

I've been following your progress here and on tumblr for a while. I hope you make it.

At 0:13, "self-confidence" needs a hyphen
I think there was way too much text. First you talk about each characters then the story and the world then the gameplay then back to the story then a cutscene that's only text. Remembe the old saying: "Show, don't tell".
Probably too late to change that but I think the eyes on some of the sprites have too many pixels and make the face look strange

- All the characters sound a bit emo (except the cat)
- "unique battle systems" -> "unique combat skills" (more in-character)
- I care not a single bit what you call the "dontdie" and "killdudes" bars. You should talk about what types of abilities each character has instead.
- "interesting items, cards, and combos, some of which are most unusual and hidden" -> "find dozens of unique items and hidden upgrades", also shorten the video part of this
- You make it sound like your badguys' primary motivation is to fuck shit up. Surely they have some actual goal, and fucking shit up is just a side effect?
- WE HORROR GAME NOW - what the fuck?

Honestly the whole thing seems a bit disorganized. You've got storyline, character bios, gameplay, back to storyline, random horror sequence out of nowhere, and more storyline.

Also I'm not a big fan of the in-game art style. The pixel art is so low-detail it look kind of lazy IMO.

>>168945914
I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to do but a few thing...
OnTriggerEnter is only called once and you don't want a while loop in there as it would halt you're program for 10 second or whatever
also 'animationTimer -= 1;' would reduce animationTimer by one every frame, and if you're running at 60fps, it would reach 0 in 1/6 of a second, if you want it to last 10 seconds you need 'animationTimer -= Time.deltaTime;' so you're final script might look something like:

void Update () {
if (animationTimer > 0) {
other.gameObject.transform.position = PickUpHelper.transform.position;
animationTimer -= Time.deltaTime;
}
}

void OnTriggerEnter (Collider other) {
if (other.gameObject.tag == "Collectable") {
animationTimer = 10;
}
}

I see, well wrote this haven't tested it so there might be some errors and it not the cleanest implementation but it should work:

public Transform PickUpHelper;
float animationTimer = 0;

void Update() {

}

IEnumerable ShowCollectableHover(Transform Collectable) {
while (animationTimer > 0) {
Collectable.position = PickUpHelper.transform.position;
animationTimer -= Time.deltaTime;
yield return null;
}

//Hanlde how you want to stop displaying the object here:
Destroy(Collectable.gameObject); // I'll just remove it
}

void OnTriggerEnter(Collider other) {
if (other.gameObject.tag == "Collectable") {
animationTimer = 10;
StartCoroutine(ShowCollectableHover(other.transform)); // start a new Coroutine (you might want to read the docs on how they work)
}

successful people generally don't do anything for its own sake, and if a villain is going to be a good villain they should probably generally be successful

very often the endgame is just "power" or "one more dollar" or "destruction of a hated thing" but there's still an endgame beyond "I am just trying to make the world a worse place"

should be at least "I am trying to make the world a worse place because X" imo

Huh. So I should make a new map? The thing is, to both save time and space, I was planning on re-using that same map (well, once I make graphics for it) multiple times, and depending on where you come from, that is the correct perspective. Also, rotating the map would both bitmap rotation and map rotation. That could theoretically be done, but might be a little difficult to get 100% working.

- different story formats have different syntaxes and they are not compatible
- the core documentation sucks
- text output gets wacky when dealing with whitespace and code blocks
- your code will be open source forever because "decompiling" it is just opening the game in the editor

+ they don't ask you for money (choicescript wants like a 30% cut)
+ open source is hometown
+ the development tool is pretty neat

but most importantly

+ it does the job it's doing better than the alternatives and it means you don't have to roll your own engine.

>>168950578
> dumb story games
if you're making something more complex than a dumb story game, you should be using a more complex tool than twine.
>>
>>168950152
they said "anywhere from $100 to $5000"
if you consider that even mentioning that is part of anchoring (and it is because next to no one is discussing it being $0) then the logical conclusion is they intended to pick somewhere in the middle.

im far more interested in their undetailed mention that devs would "recoup" the fee. depending on how they do that the fee is nothing or the fee is them profiting from failure.

Can you imagine paying the $2000 fee just to release a game that maybe gets you $200-300 in sales? And then you lose some to Steam's cut + taxes on top of that. Has anyone here paid for marketing, like ads or youtuber previews/reviews? Has anyone here actually profited from their game?

wtf though, as if gamedev wasn't hard enough already, let's just shit on 1MAs/small teams even more, they'll be fine.

They couldn't make money off of Skyrim modding, so now Steam Direct is the next strat? What's next? You have to pay an extra money to redownload games you've already bought? "Oh no, it's not paying extra money, it's just a processing fee to help keep our servers maintained at Valve so that we can better serve you. :) "

"I'm not rich enough yet and I don't feel like hiring extra people to review games before they go up on our store, so instead let's just get everyone else to pay us money for no reason! :D "

I agree that $100 is too low a barrier of entry. But $2k would be way too high for any 1MA who's trying to test the waters with their first game. $500 would be a more reasonable price; since it's doable for pretty much anyone with a little saving.

You're assuming crowdfunding is guaranteed funding. How many crowdfunded campagins actually succeeded? Aren't you supposed to give the money back on Kickstarter if it failed? I think only Indiegogo lets you keep the money even if it failed as long as you deliver/postupdates?

That's the point, though. If you don't get past crowdfunding, how do you expect to make a profit on Steam? Crowdfunding is a free and easy way to not only gauge interest in your game, but it can also give you the funds you need to take the next step and publish. If you can't make $2000 on Kickstarter, odds are you can't do it on Steam, either, and on Steam you'd already have spent the money.

It's such a stupid hassle for no reason. I was planning on just working hard on my game until it was done and then upload it. Now I'm forced to do crowdfunding. I'm a shut-in neet who hasn't talked to strangers irl for years. Now I have to make a video and beg for money or hire someone else to make the video except that I don't have money. The only one who profits from this is Valve and they aren't even doing anything, we're just giving them extra money. they can't be bothered to hire more staff to review games? now my game is going to get judged by how I look and act and how much I can kiss everyone's ass and get distracted by reward tiers, rather than the game itself. fuck

This is wrong for so many reasons but the biggest is that the target audience of a crowdfunding campaign is completely different than the target audience of a game purchase and you're a massive fucking idiot.

I hate to break this to you, but your personal problems aren't Valve's problems. You were going to have to interact with people anyway, whether through marketing or talking to potential reviewers. You were going to have to make a video for a Greenlight trailer anyway. Why would Valve spend more money hiring more reviewers just to make your life and my life easier, for little to no gain.
>now my game is going to get judged by how I look and act
Shit, that was probably going to happen already. Social media is key if you want to create a following for your game. If you wanted to have a quiet, uneventful release with no players, well, I can understand your point, but if you wanted to make any sort of splash, I think you're mistaken about how much personal effort it takes to get the hype machine going. There are so many indie games out there that an unpublicized dark horse is nearly impossible. You were going to have to interact with a potential fanbase no matter how this went down: stop pretending you're above it all when everyone else has to deal with the same thing, whether they like it or not.

So let me get this straight: you'd rather spend an unknown amount of money on a game launch that is probably going to fail, rather than building interest through a campaign and then utilizing those funds to get on the platform, thus breaking even? Why would you want to spend your own money when there's an easy alternative?
>>
>>168955658
I really think you're just talking out of your ass. You have no idea how to market games, run any sort of campaign, or even run a project at all.
>>
>>168956362
And I'm sure nothing I could tell you would change your mind about that, so let's leave the argument here. I'm sure we both have better things to do, like actually working on our games.

Why do other professions let you maintain some level of privacy while gamedev/crowdunding requires you to put yourself out there. Like with regualr software programming, only your employers need your identification, and with art, you can go by a username instead of putting all your information out there. But with gaming, everyone needs to know your political stance and gender and shit. Like wtf, it's a neet hobby, but it's the one that requires you to be social? With art and programming you can speak professionally, but with games why do we need devs to be 'cool' with us? Why do we need to know everything about them and whether or not they shitpost?

Look even here, it's like anons can't even just tune them out, they gotta look up their most hated devs and find all the shit they've said or done in the past so they can blackmail them or talk shit. How do you protect yourself from these kinds of autists who will look for your bullshit since they have nothing else to do. Name one dev indie or AAA that doesn't get harassed or trolled/shat on on a daily basis.

Like it's not enough to just make a game and deliver a product like every other profession. No you have to deliver your entire personality and life to thousands of strangers who want to see you fail.

Spoken like someone who's never worked in commercial art, especially as a freelancer. Your brand is everything and people will hire you or pass over you just because they do/don't like a tweet you made three years ago. 90% of hiring in art is through knowing someone who knows someone who knows someone. The truth is that programmers usually work for a company so no one cares what they do, but game devs and artists work for themselves, so everyone's always in their business.

I'm not even the person you're arguing about, I just got into the thread and I'm watching you say things that are poorly thought-out but on the surface seem rhetorically sound to people who might not know anything about project management.
