Yes your units can rank up. The investment is large.
You get like 140 orbs from the story which is 7 full rolls before you need to spend money. If you don't get a full 5* team with the free orbs you should start over and try again.

Not even close, red swords in general have no natural predators and handle Hector with ease. If you're in a Hector vs Hector scenario it's actually easier to let yours eat up the enemy Takumi/Robin/Effie/othershit and let your red sword tank then slap Hector.

They are great units and it just so happens the first banners of the game were focused on nearly all of the top red melee units.

You have to look at the big picture rather than a 1v1 scenario, how much work is a red sword from the first banner going to get done, how may units do they counter or do well against? Effie is too slow to be anything near a predator, Aqua has her uses with dancing and probably wont end up getting close enough to hit the sword, and Linde is a glass cannon that herself has to actually survive the rest of the team.
