I don't really play sf4 either, I just played it a ton in the past so I know some stuff and I can more or less do things the one time every 2 months I play it. I wouldn't really say I have a main for that reason though the character I played the most the last few times was Sagat. My best character is probably Ryu though because I can just do Ryu things.

In melty I main F-Ciel and she's definitely by far the character I studied and learned the most stuff for, but I can more or less play a ton of other characters.

yeah, the v-skill counter doesn't have the camera angle change animation but seems to counter all attacks (high/low/mid) and can be used as a regular attack, you can link after it but its unsafe on block. The special attack counter is just a counter move that has high/low/mid versions but the ex covers all and does tons more damage/stun, looks like has better oki as well.

More fun when it comes to combo opportunities and creativity. It was easier to tell apart a good player VS someone weaker. The damage output was much highee.

If you like Marvel, Skullgirls is alright and it's pretty easy to find matches for it. Nitroplus is also a bit like Marvel, or it at least has two assists with one playable character, but you need to find matches via the discord these days.

Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator is pretty fun, but it's like 50 USD, so that may be out for you. Fightcade has a bunch of populated games that are fun to play like KoF 98 and 2002, Vampire Savior (a little harder to find matches in it), and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Also, most importantly, Fightcades are all free. you just need to get the roms, and I think they're in this general's pastebin.
