I re-speced by character today, and somehow my damage increased, but i don't know how. The only thing I changed was my END to 30 from 35 and my VIT to 25 from 20.

I was farming lothric knight GS from the knight by the sunlight altar, and I was 3-hitting him with my BKGS: backstab, L2+R2, and an R1. Now, I can kill him with a backstab and L2+R2 combo. anyone know why this happened? I didn't change anything about my equipment except for putting the Longsword +10 as my R Hand Weapon 2 because I now have more carry weight.

It's less powerful than a great heavy soul arrow for twice the FP cost and locked behind level 2 of the sunbros.

For the time it takes to cast in melee range, you could R1 3 times for more damage. The damage at range is too low relative to the FP cost to be worthwhile as a source of ranged damage. Stake and Sunlight Spear are the only ones that do more damage in melee than the equivalent time spent mashing R1, and stake only beats it out just barely.

Lightning spears as a whole need to be completely redesigned.

Spears should be ranged spells with very high alpha damage, high costs, moderate efficiency and a noticeable explosive effect. DaS2 had this done perfectly with the way they balanced spears post-patch, had attunement casts not been completely bugged. Lower-tier spears get higher efficiencies, but overall lower damage-per-shot. Ideally, each spear should do 33% more damage than the last one, at the cost of 33% more mana per damage dealt.

Stake should be THE trading miracle that has extremely high damage, very high costs, and very poor FP to damage efficiency. This isn't to say that SLS/GLS/LS shouldn't trade, they can, and in fact, should, since they cast faster than stake.

The problem with poise on armor is very fundamental and obvious. The weapons that really need poise are big, slow, heavy weapons that won't otherwise ever complete a swing; however, any speed of weapon can obviously benefit from poise. This has been balanced in DeS and BB by not giving fast weapons hyperarmor and giving heavy weapons hyperarmor, so that the weapons that need it have it and the weapons that don't, don't. This is really straightforward and sensible. But anybody can wear any kind of armor with any kind of weapon, so if poise is attached to armor, you can use that mechanic with fast weapons that don't really need it. This led inevitably in DS1 to the abomination that was tanky Gold Tracer builds, and pretty much all the rest of the dominant dex builds in the game that could still enjoy most of the poise that used to belong to strength weapons.

On top of this, you need heavier armor to get more poise, or above a certain level of weight to get any poise at all (except in the case of a certain ragged sash worn about the hips). Because dexterity weapons tend to be much lighter than strength weapons, now strength is double-penalized; your great weapon eats up a lot of weight, and so does your armor, and you can't fatroll. Meanwhile, the katana-wielding havel wearer is getting similar protections while fastrolling/flipping with ease because his weapon is much lighter. This is not only shitty for game balance, it also removes a central part of the strength weapon flavor.

So the problem with poise as it was in DS1 is not a problem of poor implementation or fine-tuning numbers, it is a fundamental mechanical issue with the design choice. The only proper response is to just replace the mechanic with one that attaches poise to movesets, not armors.

Side note, I don't give a fuck about realism, I just know DS1 poise is garbage. Backstabs were also shit in that game, reply to see my essay on that.

I just don't want to write off being tough enough to take a hit and not be stunned, even when you're not attacking. Particularly from light weapons.

Say you only get Poise when two-handing a weapon, and only certain weapons have it, like Greataxes, greathammers, ultra greatswords. Obviously the person could still poke once and roll away, but it's still better than being poked twice. You could still do the normal hyper armor attack that would have its own stun resist frames, even if right now hitting light weapons with those attacks can be a hassle. It's just an extra way of helping heavier weapons. Needless to say, how much you'd be able to resist being stunned would be limited.

Yes I agree that poise as it was in dark souls 1 was unbalanced, especially with endurance being tied to weight and stamina, and how heavy weapons need even more carry weight. I still enjoy the pvp in that game. Though at the same time I'm happy the other games didn't do the same, it still feels like they're lacking of what I enjoyed. Not saying this is what it needs and that it's a savior feature, but just one that I thought was really interesting.

Well, again I think it's pretty straightforward. Because of how poise worked and because of how easy it was to get a backstab, DS1 PvP revolved around and was almost entirely ruined by backstabs. Arguably it also ruined PvE, but that case is less clear.

So let's say you're playing DS2 for instance and someone with a straight sword comes at you. Fortunately, you have a spear. So when your opponent gets within range, you hit R1 and your spear hits the opponent, damaging and momentarily stunning him, checking his advance. That's all good and normal. In DS1, you were never ever guaranteed to have that happen, because of poise. Poise made regular weapon attacks much less appealing than they've been in any other Souls because of that lack of security in stuns. Worse yet, you could successfully attack, but in the course of that have your enemy circle around behind you and get a poisestab, certainly out-trading your hit, and because backstabs started up instantly they were not difficult to collect. And forget trying to use a greataxe in this environment, rollbs'd on every swing.

Now consider it from the other side. You are approaching someone and have the option of hitting R1. You cannot be assured that an R1 will stun your opponent. However, you can be assured that a backstab will if it lands; you can't poise through backstabs (without Japanese magic). If you're wearing a hornet ring, your BS will also be very damaging. And if you fail, there's almost no downside, the only really bad thing that can happen is getting counterstabbed and that's not hard to avoid. So the backstab option has little risk and a big reward. That is the fundamental imbalance of them as they were in DS1, and the root of the Hornetclub Havelmom.

As for PvE, backstabs were just as appealing there, particularly because rollstabs were easy, but arguably you're not going to trivialize PvE like that until you're well practiced anyway so it's not a big loss.

That sounds like a weird hybrid of DS2 and 3's systems. From what I recall of DS3 science, there's individual poise modifiers to certain attacks that determine your overall resistance to being stunned in the course of them; halberds having good poise values, for instance. So your poise matters, but only in the course of certain attacks, and you get a base poise value too as I recall so the weight isn't as much of a problem either. It's a weird amalgam that ends up feeling like DeS even if it operates based on armor poise values.

And actually, DS2 did allow you to ignore light weapons when not attacking at very high poise values, iirc. Well, very high poise and assuming your enemy didn't have a Stone ring on, and even then it was just that you didn't get stunned as long by getting hit.

I'll always prefer the simplicity of hyperarmor, but if you're going to have a weight system at all you should definitely have compelling reasons to wear heavier armor.

How much should we increase the AR of ultras to compensate for their inaccuracy as a result of the power of rolls in Dark Souls 3?

I was thinking that most ultras should be brought around ~720ish AR for them to be competative to the ARs of small weapons approaching fucking 500.

Warcry'd BKGA 40/40 has around that amount, almost 750 actually, and it can three-shot people with lower defensive statistics.

Although realistically, lowering their stamina costs slightly and increasing ultra 1H recovery while increasing 2H speed would be a better way to go.

Yes you're right about your info, except halberds don't have good poise. Unless I misunderstood what you meant.

In dark souls 2 rolling attacks would always stagger you for some reason. There was also hyper armor but I don't know if having your poise hp go to 0 mid attack affected it. I know rolling attacks don't stagger the hyper armor. I guess this hybrid more in line with what I had in mind, I forgot about the details.

Oh I also forgot, they even gave some greathammers perseverance WA, which is unrelated to poise.

About balancing of this kind of anti-light weapon poise in dark souls 3, the only time where I can see this being a big deal is punishing estus with light weapons. If it gets in the way of 2 hit stun then it could be a problem. A way to solve this is instability frames while you're drinking estus.
