Regarding in-game trading, there is going to be a completely different approach to the current system in the Chinese version of the game, which is also being considered for the Xbox release. In the PC version, players have access to an API system that allows players to create lists and search for items on various websites. Once a player finds an item they’re looking for, they can contact the other user in-game.

“We don’t want trade to be too convenient. We’ve seen what happens in other games, and also in our own game, when trade is too easy. It lets people bypass content way too quickly,” said Chris.

The trade system in China, and potentially on Xbox, will be more user friendly but also more difficult to find the exact item you’re looking for. Players will be able to buy items from each other in a single click, but there’s going to be a small catch. In WoW if you want a specific item you can go do said raid/dungeon/quest or buy it on the AH
In POE you cant just go and kill a boss to get w/e item you want. You have to either get lucky on a drop or trade for it. Same with selling said item you have to find a buyer who is also knowledgeable enough to know what the item is worth. This is why POE has an economy vs D3 which never had an economy because everything was based on gold. Gold does not actually do anything in a game its just a currency. The currency in POE actually does something and hence you need to know if its worth it to buy a 6l or burn fusings trying to link the item you already have.
It adds complexity to the game.

How exactly is that a bad thing? I happen to enjoy the storyline progression more than mapping and taking longer to progress won't necessarily be tedious since the end goal, having your character grow more and more powerful is still intact. What this means is that instead of staying 20 levels in Dried Lake and no repeat, you get to experience content with a smooth progression for your first 75 levels. ONE PLAYTHROUGH. It's going to be a game changer

Worldbuilding-wise, ignoring the actual quality of writing? It still depends on what you want. If you want meaning and themes and imagery and symbolism and having so many of them you'll drown, then you can get away with something like wh40k as 10/10 and ignore how fucking silly and non-applicable the entire thing is. Something more serious than Discworld, probably. I can't really say anything bad about Middle-Earth but I guess you want something more recent. I can't say anything bad about Planescape either, but I guess you want something more grounded. Either way, those are all tens for me.

Runequest is easily 10/10. Legend of Five Rings is a 9. World of Darkness as a whole is a 9. Magic the Gathering pre-Oddyssey is a pretty cool and rich setting. Sapkowski's Hussite trilogy and the way it weaves history into fantasy cool as fuck.

Yes, but what you fail to understand is that the whole trading mini-game requires knowledge and experience. A newbie would get lost in it, get scammed, not be able to properly evaluate prices, etc. and thus not be able to fully make use of it. Thus some effort and "skill" is involved, but that isn't even the only way you can progress unlike AH D3 which was 100% gated behind using the AH with no other options if you wanted to progress.

This is what I mean by balance around players slaying monsters and players trading, one cannot be too easy, and one cannot also be unnecessarily tedious. Difficulty is not tedium, that's the distinction.

Self found runs can be very fun and very tough depending on the league and what build you go with.
AH would ruin a large part of what POE is. That is its a item based RPG game. When you find an exalt in a new you are exited not because you can add a mod to a random rare item you but because you can trade it for a great item or items for your build. If we had an AH certain build defining items would be 200 exalts where other great items would be a few alchs because of how available everything would be.
Trading is part of playing the game just as much as slaying monsters or theory crafting builds.

You have option A, or option B, or even option A+B. This is preferable to only having option A. If you slay at trillion monsters and find nothing of worth, then this is unrewarding and you resort to trading because you have no other option. If you're showered with upgrades for every 5 white skeletons you kill, then this is also unrewarding because upgrades lose their meaning and you have no incentive to ever participate in the economy. You can't have either extreme, it has to be a balancing act.

The problem is a) Blizzard wanted a simplified itemization model so the game could be easily balanced with a greater focus on arcade gameplay (rotations etc), so each class ends up having basically 1-3 builds
b) simplified itemization means all valuable items are centralised around a few legendaries and their upgraded variants. Your loot ends up devolving to basically slightly different variants on the same dozen items.

I've been playing this game since Closed Beta. I remember being in High School at the time and saying to myself 'I actually believe in this game, and everyone seems so genuine. The community, the developers, and the content.' I was working part time, but I remember giving up my entire week's paycheck to donate to this game. It was the first time I had ever donated and it was such a huge plunge for me. I knew though, I knew that it would be an investment for what would be hours and hours of joy and entertainment, memories and laughs. To this day, I still rock my Silver Kiwi proudly. I've since donated a total of $350 and couldn't be happier. My friend and I even came together to create the Hunter's Resolve card. I can't thank you and your team enough for this great game. I don't think I could have spent that initial donation any wiser.

Can I play PoE just like any other Diablo?
Or is it really the "follow step by step guides and spend all your time sitting in hubs waiting for item trades"-fest that critics make it out to be?

The game looks solid and it seems like the developers put in a ton of work to add new content

I wouldn't be above looking at guides to make my character viable when he reaches later parts of the game (I don't know if it has PvP and if it does I wouldn't engage with it)

Picking up the shit you find and using it on your character kind of seems like a big drive in Diablos and I don't want to wait in a hub or search some external website to fight people who will trade me some sword I need to progress, that would really irk me and might actually keep me from playing an otherwise good game

It is entirely viable to make a generic elemental caster and play around with whatever skills you want or happen to find.

Even then trading isn't as big of a pain as some make it out to be. It takes a bit to search for the item you want, message the guy, and trade. A fast trade can take less than a minute in a healthy economy, aka not Standard or Standard Hardcore.
