You know, I've read about 150 VNs, and there is this reoccurring theme of the protagonist having some male sidekick that is annoying as all fuck. It seems like it's really difficult for writers to insert that male sidekick character in a way that adds more to the story than detracts from it.

And then we have Shiki & Kosuke ... Circus has had shit writing for a long time, don't get me wrong, but this was pure brilliance. They made the male sidekick enjoyable by giving him a female sidekick.

Shiki is so engaging, that you found yourself really, really, really wishing she had her own route because of her personality, plus her identity as a puppet, would have been actually interesting (as opposed to the rest of the shit characters and bland story arcs).

So while Kosuke is a 4/10 when it comes to male sidekicks, his 9/10 female sidekick being paired with him makes his presence a lot more tolerable. Well done, Circus.

GOOD point. I think a lot of it has to do with the writers thinking: The side character can't be better than the MC, and he needs to engender comedy, so make him a goofy pervert! or a lame shadow to make MC shine brighter! Or so on. Rarely are they approached with "how do we make a good character". I mean in the first place, any male except the MC is out of the picture in moege from the beginning. Moege are about a relationship between the MC and a heroine. By default a male side character won't play a big part in that picture, so they aren't given much attention by the developers.

In the end though, that's a mistake. Good male characters like pic related can really help a game be enjoyable, creating more of a group dynamic than a "5 girls talking to MC separately at the same time"

It's really not as good as you'd expect. It's aged very poorly and has an absurd number of routes with weird flags to enter. What's more, most of the routes and girls aren't even that good. Kyou, for example, gets a shitty love triangle route while the main route is way too long and features the worst girl in the VN. And the true ending is very irritating to a large number of people, though to be fair I don't know if you're one of them. Some people find it touching.

Tomoyo is great though. Both route and girl.

The anime is hands down the best VN adaptation there is but since the VN is way longer it has stuff the adaptation and fleshes out the characters more. Also you get to see the routes for the other girls.

If you really liked the anime and the price doesn't seem much buy it, otherwise watch the anime.

If you tell the story of a human vs an almost omnipotent being things get freaky, sure, but I expected something more akin to Umineko following the first 20 days (that is, trying to piece together a system/story). That's not a bad idea, I've been doing more or less doing the same before this flashback started.
However, inbetween the constant barrage of H-scenes, Amane's route does have alot of nice scenes and talk with the other girls. Makina's art class was excellent and there's plenty of Michiru bullying and other Makina and Sachi shenanigans. The rest is very skip-able though in my opinion.

I bought those flashcards on amazon a long with a book called JAPANESE from zero! (progressive edition!) and i've done the first 50ish pages until it came to the Hiragana/katakana.
I've used probably a few days with varying from 10 minutes to 2 hours a day trying to remember them.

Okay, so, please don't take this the wrong way, but you made two mistakes:
1) You basically got hooked into buying a book designed more to make money than to teach Japanese, for actually good resources and whatnot (including anki for flashcards instead of physical ones) go to DJT on /a/ and look at their guide.
2) It can take a week or even several to learn kana, they're 100 unique characters, if you learn 5 a day that's 20 days, almost three weeks. You don't have to blitz them in a couple days. You can't force memory - you've got to go at your own pace while letting exposure and time to its work.

You're missing some really important things, which is that
1) It's not necessarily the kamige that most people care about, but the moege/nukige, and there are far too many of those to translate (several new ones a month), and there's a huge store of older ones which will never get translated.
2) Nuance and meaning is lost through translation such that a translated version will always be inferior to the original. Even if EVERY visual novel was translated, which will never happen, it'd still be worthwhile to learn Japanese because the original is so much better and more precise to the original intentions. Languages aren't 1:1, they aren't even close. VNs are always way better in Japanese.
3) Every visual novel is NOT translated, and indeed, plenty of kamige are not getting translated. In reality, despite strides being made with Dies and Baldr getting translated, there's still tooons and tons and tons of kamige that remain untranslated, and additionally, as times goes on, more and more kamige are released, there's really not a shortage at all, maybe for "mega-hits" like Dies but in terms of just really high quality universally loved games, there's plenty.
4) People often have specific tastes, like wanting games with yanderes in particular or something along those lines, and unlike kamige those specific tastes will be met in random, obscure games. By learning Japanese one can read whatever interests them whenever they want. By not learning Japanese one has to pray that the games they like get translated which is extremely unlikely given the quantity, esp for doujin games.

The problem is being interesting doesn't automatically make something good. You could try and stretch the meaning further and it might have been going for saying that you can't make dead people in to real people since the goal was to create a "real" world within the fake world which would have caused the overall death of the world due to "bugs". But this doesn't really change the problems it had during the last quarter and the overall feeling that it could have been far shorter to get the same points and feelings across.
If anything you can say the only thing really going for it is that it has a slightly convoluted plot of meta and throw away references to mythology rather than the contents of the plot itself.

The Yuri side stuff was, for the most part, basically pointless and in the end didn't exactly add that much to story, so it dragged on too much and felt a waste of time, and the ending might have explained things but it still felt rushed as hell. So if they cut out a few things and fleshed out the endings slightly better it might have felt more satisfying. Instead it felt more like someone said "shit we have to we have to quickly wrap it up now".
