Ouma told nobody what was his plan until near the end of his life. And the way he acted after the 4th trial did not help matters.

We can't say anything without translations of chapter 5 but from the looks of it Maki wanted to save Kaito at all costs, even willing to kill Ouma and get herself executed to do it.

Maybe the reason why she was so antagonistic was because she deluded herself into believing it was Ouma who killed Kaito with the crusher and not her poison.

Not exactly. Kaito was never in real danger and even remarks as such when he's talking to Saihara through the window- Ouma hasn't tried to harm him in any way.

The specific reason Maki goes after Ouma with such urgency and with the full intent to kill him is because she was manipulated by Tsumugi's fake flashlight that led her to believe that he was the leader of SHSL despair and that he is the true mastermind. Kaito was a factor, but adding together how much despair learning the "truth" of the outside world cause to learning that Ouma was the one that apparently caused all of it was enough to drive her to kill him without question. Kaito was being rescued by the rest of the students, after all. Her pursuit of Ouma was for her "own" reasons.

Unfortunately, the communication breakdown happens when Maki shoots and tries to grill Ouma on something he has no idea about- she tries to interrogate him about being SHSL despair, why he ruined the world, etc etc and she takes Ouma's confusion/inability to answer as him being obstinate. She decides to kill him instead of pressing further with a second arrow, Kaito blocks it, and the rest is history.

So it's a combination of Ouma's secrecy, Tsumugi's manipulation, and her training as an assassin that causes her to not question orders/a mission that caused Maki to act how she did.

Thanks for summarizing that. Ouma also tells Kaito in Kaito's flashback to his final plan that Maki attacked him because he was framed, something he only figured out too late.

Anyway, that was enough of a screw-up but then Maki keeps her involvement with this case a secret until I believe Saihara starts wondering what's up with her insisting Ouma must have killed Kaito and she antagonizes him, talking about stuff like how he doesn't trust people and asks him something about how they decided to put their lives on the line to defeat the mastermind, only everyone except for Maki wanted to grill Ouma in some way without killing him (And they weren't exactly gung-ho about wanting to die either) when she lied to them and if she had at least told them what she saw they might have figured out there's a big contradiction between what the flashlight suggests and how Ouma could easily have done more despairing things to them if he was really that bad a person.

It's bad enough that Maki effectively killed both Ouma and Kaito by her actions, and her behavior during the trial just made it all the worse to me.

The more I think about it, the more I really think he should've been the chapter 4 killer, who snapped after learning the "truth" of the outside world.

Him killing someone and trying to get everyone killed (and presumably taking himself out afterward were he to win) would make sense for someone who loves humanity, culture and history and who just saw the entirety of humanity's existence erased from the face of the earth.

Chapter 4 was definitely Ouma's fault to an extent, though some of the very bitter lines he says here does seem to imply that the cast isn't blameless in their actions. It's hard to blame him for such resentment seeing that he ended up being the target of not one but two cold-blooded murder plans while trying to get everyone out and doing things he found despicable since no one else would do them.

That he scolds Himiko for not caring about Tenko until she died and mocks everyone for crying over Miu's death when they never cared for her clearly shows that he's not as bad as people think he is. To my knowledge he also says to Kaito how sad it was that everyone was willing to believe he was the mastermind even though he wanted them to, and ultimately it's depressing how both he and Amami wanted to end the game peacefully only to be done in because people didn't try to understand what were they getting at.

Oh, no doubt about it. That just makes things worse because Ouma already warned everyone to be cautious of her and Kaito encouraged Maki to not run away from the truth, and in the end both of them still died because of her. More Ouma than Kaito obviously, but she even tried to save Kaito from being executed after he gave himself up and she'd never have had to do that had she thought a lot harder about why Ouma exposed her talent in the first place.

It also makes sense that a SHSL Anthropologist would have very out there views on everything and his deceased sister being his inspiration further complicates matters, since obviously he couldn't go on travels without worrying about her when she was alive.

I've theorized that the reason why Ouma really goes off the rails in chapter 4 has nothing to do with him ever being a pawn of despair by being brainwashed but rather that he might not even be brainwashed at all.

Up until then Ouma has done a lot of things he doesn't like such as saying he doesn't care about Tenko's death to make everyone talk about it, and everything he does is calculated to an extent that he really believes he can bear with everyone's hatred so long as they survive.

Then he runs off to see the state of the world and realizes they're utterly fucked both ways, since they can't escape outside and the killing game will continue until everyone's dead if they stay inside. That's bad enough without him also realizing they're being watched, and it's possible he fell into despair long enough to think it might be better that they all die rather than to kill each other and be entertainment to sick psychos.

Ouma's motive video only showing up at chapter 6 makes me curious how 'fake' it is since obviously if you were in charge of making people like killing games to quell the masses and the government is totalitarian, the last thing you need is a cheeky brat running around calling himself a dictator and making a mockery of your killing game.

What better way to inflict despair on him by tossing him into one and forcing him to discard every value he holds dear to try and save everyone, twisting him into the very thing he hates the most?

Again very hard to pick because most people do depict Ouma's many nuances well, but I'll go with this one.

The contrast between the two we see here is amazing. The 'real' Ouma in the open is dynamic and holds himself with poise, calmly smiling while he argues his case with confidence while the 'hidden' one lacks such a smile, the obscured part of his face and tired eyes hinting at his cynical nature while he sits idly with one foot hanging in the air, not knowing if what he's doing is correct or good.

This fanart to me really captures the essence of Ouma's character as it highlights how the nature of truth and lies is more complicated than something being obvious or kept a secret, much like how you can never hope to understand Ouma's character without reading between the lines and realizing that there's so much more to his actions than what he wants you to believe.

Even the way the 'hidden' one sits suggests he doesn't have any faith that people will understand him, which really just makes it all the more fantastic.

I do think Kodaka did a very good job of expanding on the theme of truth and lies, where I find the final chapter extremely lacking is that there's an extreme divide between the truth the survivors decide for themselves (Accepting that no matter what their experiences were real) and wanting to end things while we as players know that the story will never end, thus leaving me complaining that basically nothing was actually accomplished.

Based on what you said I know which site you mean, so...yeah, keep it on the down low.
