And unlike the towns in literally ALL gta games and most gta clones, towns in DF actually make sense. Whenever I play gta games or gta clones nowadays, I'm always baffled by how an infinite amount of people can live in a town with so few residental buildings.

I also hate how almost all of those take place on islands which are geologically impossible. Pic related: why the fuck would a natural archipelago have such a perfect square shape?

When will computers become good enough that Toady can release his super secret version of DF that he developed in secret which lets you interact with the generated world intelligently like with an a.i.?
I heard they tried to run it on one of those CIA supercomputers that's the size of a small country but there still wasn't enough computing power.

>>
>>168108539
There is no way to discover the size an tile at dwarf fortress.

Some tried to assume human walking speed is realistic and tried to find the tile size based at that, but you have all kids of conflicting stuff.

One thing toady should do is to decide what is the size of an tile, and then change the entire game to fit with this size.

Actually this should be the first thing he should do (after this patch), it would speed his deveopment process after it, but not having to guess stuff

>>
So how the fuck do I make a godly army now?

Back in 40d I just drafted everyone as wrestlers and had them spar for years, then I gave them weapons and they spared and got their skills up super fast.

Have I been doing something wrong or is military not supposed to be so easy to train anymore? All my dwarves do is Individual Combat Drill, which only slowly trains up their assigned weapon. Can I train dodging and so on?

I don't really want to use danger rooms or other things I have to manually control
>>
>>168109557
I've never played a gta game, but I take issue with the comparison you're making. While SOME smaller settlements in DF will have enough buildings to accomodate its population, they're the exception by far. If a city in gta has even a single medium-to-large apartment building, then it probably has a greater residential capacity than any city in DF.
DF is probably better than the gtas for a lot of reasons, but realism in building-to-population isn't one of them.
>>
>>168124113
Why is this such a problem for so many people? I would've expected DF players to be more patient.
Just wait. They'll start sparring eventually. In a matter of seasons you'll have your click-here-to-kill-anything easymode military.
>>
>>168124370
Because I've been playing since 40d and all the years after that I've never been able to train a godly army with the new system. Even for fortresses that have been set up and run for years.

>then it probably has a greater residential capacity than any city in DF.
Yeah, as it fucking should, considering GTA cities are supposed to be ultra-modern megacities. The DF towns are more sparsely populated.

Also, while DF towns may not have an entire house for every family, they still all have somewhere to go when they want to sleep.

Of course, the most ridiculous case is little Haiti in Vice city. It's a shanty town where the Haitian diaspora lives. You encounter and kill hundreds of gang members from there throughout the course of the game, yet all of them supposedly live in a few dozens of small shacks. Seriously, despite the shanty town consisting of thirty shacks tops, you encounter infinite people who supposedly live there.

>>
>>168124819
>they still all have somewhere to go when they want to sleep
They all go to a few buildings and sleep in piles. And that's just the comparitively small number of citizens of a town that actually load when you go there; the abstract population of even a small town in DF is radically larger than its residential capacity.
I don't doubt that gta is absurd on that front, but DF is too. It's a video game convention that's necessary (for now, at least) with any game that tries to simulate a large open world.

Man DF can get depressing sometimes. This whole market used to be a thriving center of commerce, and now only a small corner is left after a massive battle in the town. Also, I decided to gather another adventuring party to try and kill the thing. It uh, it went poorly and three of them were ripped apart before it came after me. But while it was chasing me, I jumped across a river and when the thing tried to follow me into the water, it started smoking and then I got a message saying that it had bled to death.

Totally wasn't me that came up with it.

When the calendar stars run this:
gui/gm-editor scr

That is a shortcut for gui/gm-editor df.global.gview.view.child I think, might be another child in there, but you get the idea.

Then you edit the year_tick upwards, setting it to around 400000 will put the end near the end of Obsidian and a new year.

Oh, okay, thanks. Using one that I found in a pack made me understand what was going on a lot easier and after seeing a couple of posts here about paying on the default settings it was a little bit confusing.
>>
>>168158709
You're probably talking about a very "pixel art-y" tileset, possibly with creature graphics then.
Don't hesitate to check out ASCII-like tilesets too - there are some really beautiful ones with very nice color schemes.
Also, read the wiki page here so you at least have an overview of how DF works and what you're doing:

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Graphics

even the default graphics are very easy to understand if you just remove that mental blockade and accept that you have to learn something for a moment. and you can always loo[k] at things anyway.

In fact, there isn't really a whole lot to learn: things that move are creatures, green things are vegetation, blue things are water. orderly appearing lines are walls/constructions. Getting your bearings like that takes 5 minutes. What you're left with are what items are what, which is learned relatively fast with loo[k]ing a few times.

The advantage would be that you're a lot more independent from graphic pack maintainers (although that situation improved a lot in recent years) and starter pack releases (which usually wait for stable dfhack versions).

In either case, just choose what you think looks the best.
>>
>>168155916
Oh, they're still waiting on a windows build to be done.
>>
>>168160285
Ah ok
>>
>>168159516
Thanks for the information, I'll keep that in mind about the graphics.

I've already experienced what is like to wait for the dfhack release, I don't even know how I got it working with this version of the game, may it was some kind of non-stable version of dfhack.

I have another question, when does invaders come into my hole on the side of a mountain? Does the game have any trigger or is it random events?
>>
>>168160581
>Does the game have any trigger or is it random events?
Both.
There are minimum requirements like population size and # of dug out tiles (at least there were in earlier versions, I never actually checked in years if they still exist. check the wiki to make sure), and other parameters that influence it. Namely, your world needs to have goblins that can invade you, they need to be close enough, they need to have enough "free/idle" population that can go to war with you and they musn't have more important targets - i.e. your fort must be wealthy enough.
>>
>>168161142
I was so worried, I think it is just one season that has passed and I was thinking about making armor and weapons.
>>
>>168161895
Just make what you think in what order and priority you think. Your goal is not only to survive this specific fortress and be as good as possible, but to build up experience when and what to prioritize under which conditions.
Don't be afraid to lose a fortress, focus on gaining experience from the process - identify problems and processes you can improve. Analyze why your fortress failed and brush up on knowledge you're lacking.

It's a big part of making DF fun in the long run: not following the best solution from the wiki, but experimenting and finding a solution that works well enough for your style.

In that sense, you would, for example, start out with the default embark profile until you notice in your third fortress, that the second miner is completely useless to the way you play, but some guy that would make higher quality crafts at the very beginning would help you with the first caravan.
So you change it.
Similarly, you might notice that your last few fortresses failed because you had not enough armor at the time of the first invasion, so you start earlier.
Same for embark location features, industry focus, etc.
Of course these are only examples, and in practice, the opposite cases might apply just as well.

Dwarves don't go to war with goblins all that often in worldgen either. After worldgen is another story, war is the only relation you can have with them, and you'll be at war as soon as you encounter them.
If you just copypasted the civ it won't be any different. Embark near them and play, you'll see them within a few years.

No, if you're at war it says WAR. The red line occurs for snatcher or thief civs that you aren't at war with. Peaceful relations aren't possible with them, and that's indicated by the red line. It's the only relationship other than war that you can have with those civs.

I hate how stifled wars and such seem right now. Like, you'll never see wars being fought between civs of the same race from what I can tell. You'd think if you had multiple human kingdoms they'd fight each other all the time.
>>
>>168200891
You occasionally see civs declare war on bandit or outlaw groups that are part of a same-race civ or even their own civ. It's not real common, but it happens. If you squint at legends mode the right way it kind of looks like a civil war.

When will Toady make sieges more fun?
Double agents in your inn who will try to open the gates for the siege when they come while your bumbling sheriff and hammerer form an inquisition but only end up torturing and hammering people they've gotten to arguments or brawls with.
And siege engines and ladders ramming on your gates and walls while you have full control of your squads and their positions at least as long as your commanders are alive.
Also multi-core support so the sieges don't take 20 hours to play through at 10fps.

So, I want to use DF to generate cavern and maybe overworld maps for a DnD campaign in case things go off-rails.

Is there an easy way to look at caverns and overworld and such without being in an adventurer trying to find and travel their way into said places and using some sort of hack to reveal everything?

Should I make some sort of godly playable race just so I can adventure mode with them or what?

Detailed maps of both the overworld and individual settlements can be exported from legends mode.

Caverns, dungeons, catacombs and sewers can't be exported though. You'll have to visit those in adv mode.

>>168258996
Probably confusing to various people though who aren't aware what I'm trying to do.

The critters with the solomon/jagganoth/mammon/etc names are the demiurges from kill six billion demons, they're all murderously strong and very much "final boss" types, and I haven't even fucked around with giving them unique abilities yet.

I have been trying to figure out how to make them take over a civ forever and finally figured out that I needed to put copies of some of the normal creatures in as castes of the demiurges, so it's like:

caste:mottom
blahblahmottom stuff
pop_ratio:1
caste:female
female stuff
pop_ratio:10000
caste:male
male stuff
pop_ratio:10000
select_caste:male
select_additional_caste:female
body:blahblah
material_template:standard stuff
etc
select_caste:mottom
body:blahblah
material_template:deific materials
special sense creature/creature class stuff
better gaits and combat options
etc

So it's weird in the arena because you can spawn multiple sets of human male/female and they're all the same, then mammon has subcastes of kind people, and jagganoth has subcastes of goblins (the ksbd ones, not df ones) with the other races off on their own.

Then I set up the stuff so it selects a demiurge to be queen/king/overlord if available, only 7 allowed by capping them as megabeasts, and other civs put down mix in some of the other servants and angels and devils.

Wouldn't this make 1 in 20000 normal civilians into demiurges as well?
Those civs are going to have occasional demiurge cheesemakers, demiurge weaponsmiths, demiurge bone doctors.
>>
>>168261463
Nah, since they're megabeasts it only lets a new one show up when there is an opening, and they tend to get plunked into the ruler spots immediately if there is one.
>>
>>168259871
>finally figured out that I needed to put copies of some of the normal creatures in as castes of the demiurges

Waterfalls in caverns aren't a thing yet. The others you can get with any old worldgen. Set your cavern openness high and passage density low for actually cavernous caverns, low mineral scarcity for lots of gems. Volcanism might correlate with subterranean magma features, but it doesn't appear to; I haven't exactly scienced the question, though.

it's worth mentioning that you can completely replace clothes with armor simply by slapping every civilian into a squad and setting their uniform to be worn while off-duty. also works with weapons, so your civilians won't be helpless when they decide to go fishing in the middle of an undead siege.

There's a dfhack plugin that will do that, but I've never used it so I don't know the details. However at 1 leather per animal it's never going to be an efficient way to clothe your dwarves.

So I moved the demiurge peaceful caste into their own critter entries, and left the megabeast ones in the big mashup creature entries so they will hook up with an entity but whenever they load up on screen they freak out and turn into the same creature minus the megabeast tag and associated "RAWR I'M A MONSTAR WHO MUST EAT EVERYONE!" shit.

Besides hoping for a artifact warhammer.

Make non-artifact warhammers and equip a special hammerdorf squad with them?

That's all I can think of. I strongly advice against using platinum for furniture, despite its value. Platinum furniture simply takes too long to haul, meaning that it takes forever to set up.

Why didn't you just pick "Clay" from the custom name editor?

Also, getting just "clay" should be impossible with random names, since those are always made from two words.

That aside, I agree that non-lethal combat is pretty fun in DF, even though it became kinda messed up when joint damage was added.

Well there is also this small problem of actually defining WHAT is finished game in DF case.
At what point additional features are useless or are not needed and game is considered complete ? Magic system ? Technology system ? Quad core support ?
Internal politics like heretics, cliques, assasinations, elections, different goverment types for your fort, full on rebellion against mountainhome and big scale world politics and making an impact ? What about Adventurer mode ? Would the ability to create home, have spouse and simply plough farms all day be considered enough or too much ?

Toady is a madman that can say calmly that he'll be working on the same proyect for another 25 years, probably more than any other game dev will have been (the guy from UW will die), so you can expect a hilariously big ammount of features by then
Shit, just being realistic here, he'll finish this update before summer, then he'll be working on the magic/myth update, the biggest update of the game ever done, and one of the most expected (this is a fantasy game after all) for no more than 4 years, he still has 21-26 more years of development in front of him, I really dont think law & punishment will take two decades to be done, the same goes for multi-tile stuff or botes. Funny fact: I really fucking hope DF never goes open source.

We'd end up with countless obscure forks, eaach of which would get abandoned after a few months. None of them would have the authority of being the official game, so the playerbase would become divided.

Eventually DF would die out completely, and soon get forgotten.

I can't see why people still go on about muh open source. DF is fun BECAUSE Toady's the one making it, not in SPITE of it.
>>
>>168336380
A game this good and versatile would undoubtedly have 1-2 good forks, just like Nethack and Angband.
>>
>>168337078
But would they just improve gameplay or go into worldgen and story creation as well? And would it be as in-depth as Toady's vision?
>>
>>168337348
They'd focus on a freeze/possible rollback of/to features they like, start trying to recode a bunch of spaghetti, drop it on the floor, and remember they were at gamestop trying to talk to the 5/7 cashier chick.

>>
>>168338587
hey, it's still the same thing when you get down to the nitty gritty. alternate versions of the game.
>>
>>168338896
Except the nitty gritty IS where the difference resides.

Tweaking raws is easy because it was put out there to be easy.

Pulling up a debugger and going through to figure out which strand of spaghetti is missing parmesan because it's causing a segfault and knowing how to set a breakpoint to diagnose and repair the problem is not easy, but that's the sort of shit you gotta do in some cases just to get dfhack working.

Would it be easier to work with the source rather than the blob? Sure, but it's still a vastly more involved project than pretty much everyone wishing they could just fork the code and "do it right" expects it would be.

If you make a library and assign scholars and/or scribes to it and assign unwritten-on scrolls/quires to the library and either give the scholars time to think up something to write or tell the scribes to copy something (via the library interface) then yes, they will.

Note that scholars take anywhere between no time at all and practically forever to think up something to write. I don't know if anyone other than scholars and scribes ever write anything in fortress mode.

Worth noting that besides assigning several z-levels with the zone painter, any rooms you assign as belonging to a tavern/library/temple/inn will be used appropriately even if on different z-levels, as illustrated by world-gen taverns all being two levels, libraries being 3 to 5 generally, and temples ranging from 2 to 10+ in mountainous areas.

I'm sure he will eventually, and then 90+% of all adventurers will be beautiful slim elf grills. It's the fate of every game with a waifu simulator character creation system. I like the current system better, but I know it will end.
>>
>>168386710
Well I mean you can get the exact same result if you're persistent. Also since you can play multiple characters on the same world, there could be more motivation to make different looking characters. Like, I like to have at least one cute elf girl (male) to play as but I also like making rugged adventurer types as well. Its much easier to do that sort of stuff when they all share the same save file, so to speak.

Should all trees be burnt down?

Also, can I just dig hollow spaces underneath the exteriro of my wall to stop trees growing there?
>>
>>168406594
Are you sure that they're climbing the trees, and not just the walls themselves?

Remember that the only unclimbable walls are smooth natural stone walls. For other walls, you must give them an overhang at the top to prevent climbing.

Also, the AI will avoid climbing if there is a way to get into your fort by just walking. If you make a walkable path leading the enemy into a part of the fort where you WANT them, they'll leave your unprotected walls alone.
>>
>>168406856
Yes, there were overhangs. The goblins climbed the trees which had branches growing next to and onto the overhangs.

Graphics makes game easier to learn, does not require so much focus and its simply prettier.
And since most of those lame fags are too lazy to get LNP or just a tileset ergo they bitch.

>Some of the best games ever made use ascii by default.
Fun Fact : Lack of graphics is what made me fall in love with Aurora 4x as opposed to my last big space 4x Space Empires 5.
I simply dreaded the prospect of reinstalling SE5 because those default ships were horrible and i had to spend an hour downloading and installing various great looking shipsets.

I haven't played for a few years, I notice that there's a lot less wars in history now and they're a lot less lethal, is that because wars have to draw from actual populations and move them around instead of just fudging the numbers? Fuck if there's one thing that DF does incredibly well for me, its actually making me concerned for my followers. Every time I recruit some guy in a tavern and he gets killed, I feel terrible because I feel like I'm depleting the amount of soldiers the town has. Like what if it gets attacked and overran because I was stupid and got all the local warriors killed in a bunch of stupid quests in faraway lands? Fucking DF and its assignment of significance to every single NPC.
>>

Based on what I've seen about the creation myths, I think it'd be cool if each of the different cultures had their own legends about creation.

And the player doesn't know how the world was truly born. For that, he has to ascend to godhood and ask the creator himself. Aka, Me.
>>
>>168436282
Pretty sure Toady said he intends to have different creation myths with varying levels of truth, he's just not sure if he'll be able to get them in right away with the myth generator or not, though the fake identities/covers will help there I think, and the whole update to information transfer is actually gong to be fantastic.

Seems like an odd thing to be excited about, but the whole "there will basically be something like a bulletin board which npcs use for information" tidbit really sounds awesome since it means there will be a persistence to rumors and fame and such which isn't based on any individual unit carrying it around, which means it's also closer to things like having your adventurer write down a journal of things they've done/know about and passing it on to others, getting/giving maps out which update your quest log, and so forth.
>>
>>168436179
Actually, most of the soldiers you find in taverns are travelling mercenaries, and travel from tavern to tavern the same way that performers do.

Mercenaries are all hist figs, so you can definitly exhaust the amount of them in the world if you get them killed too often, but it shouldn't affect town defences.

Then, of course, there are towns hearthspeople chillin in the taverns too sometimes. If you want to see whether a soldier is a town hearthsperson or a mercenary, just ask about their profession. Unless they tell you that they work for the lord, they're usually mercs.

This'll only be the third world I've created.
I haven't had the nerve to touch advanced yet.
I haven't played adventure mode at all and was thinking if this would be a good world for both fort and adventure?
>>
>>168448046
World size only really matters for adventure. You also can only have ONE save per world, no exceptions. Meaning the world you gen can only be used for fortress or adventure, you can't run both at the same time. Once you game over in either, though, you can go back and start a new save
>>
>>168448656
Yes, I know that.
I was planning on playing a fortress to fps death and then retire it and start in adventure mode until I splat and so on and so on.
>>
>>168448850
Then yeah that world gen is fine.

I usually find that whenever I try and commit to infinitely recycling a world like that, I get bored and just gen a new one.
>>
>>168448046
It'llbe fun for adv mode probably. If you were just forting the world size and high civs will be mostly wasted. The high number of sites makes it harder to find one you want to embark on. In adv mode those are all desirable, but as a new player you're not likely to know your ass from a hole in a wall, so you wouldn't notice the difference anyway.
>>
>>168448046
One thing to keep in mind with a world like this is with a high number of sites, it will be harder to find desirable spaces to embark.

Conversely, a high number of sites makes adventure mode much more interesting. As a result a world is generally geared for one over the other. If you want one good for both reduce civs + sites.

When it starts updating run this:

Then change the year_tick value, if you set it up to 400000 it'll be at the end of the year, if you set it to 0 it'll end the update immediately.

It's a production order issue. Dwarves prefer items for cooking in the order you made them, so they'll walk past an old royal jelly to use every damn part of every one of those two-humped camels you just slaughtered before they consider the jelly. The longer this goes on the less likely they'll be to use the progressively-older royal jelly. Make a few temporary stockpiles to feed your kitchen and restrict the goods they can use to force them to use the royal jelly. Also keep in mind that you'll need at least one solid item per royal jelly recipe.

when can I take adventurers out of my fortress? is it a specific population or wealth that allows you to embark their in adventure mode?

My alligator man cave dweller has lived on the top level of caverns for awhile now. All he has known are great chasms and underground mountains and lakes, populated by giant olms, crocodiles, rats, and bats, in a great forest of fungiwood and floor moss. But now, he has descended down a giant pit to the next layer of caverns. There are no trees or fungus here, just dirt and mud. Typical monsters have been replaced with horrid things like reachers and crundles.

I've taken to calling this place the 'underdesert'

>More progress... the artifact encounter problems I'm aware of are fixed, and NPC questers can go on near-fruitless quests in play to find artifacts known to be lost in the wilds (and find them if they happen upon the exact spot). You can sometimes find these ill-fated heroes wandering around out there, but there isn't currently a way for them to get more refined information.

Your adventurer can now name any of their legally-nameable objects (so e.g. no arrow stacks, but you can name individual arrows). This elevates the items to historical status, so you'll get events recorded about them. That doesn't mean other people will care about them. There's still a bit to do, and GDC is creeping up at the end of the month (I have a short talk again), but we'll hopefully be through the boring cleanup part soon and get to dwarf mode off-map squads.
