Finally an op pic that isn't recycled every three threads.
>>
From last thread:
>More progress... the artifact encounter problems I'm aware of are fixed, and NPC questers can go on near-fruitless quests in play to find artifacts known to be lost in the wilds (and find them if they happen upon the exact spot). You can sometimes find these ill-fated heroes wandering around out there, but there isn't currently a way for them to get more refined information.

>Your adventurer can now name any of their legally-nameable objects (so e.g. no arrow stacks, but you can name individual arrows). This elevates the items to historical status, so you'll get events recorded about them. That doesn't mean other people will care about them. There's still a bit to do, and GDC is creeping up at the end of the month (I have a short talk again), but we'll hopefully be through the boring cleanup part soon and get to dwarf mode off-map squads.

I guess it won't come out before summer after all.

That means we might not get the myths before early 2019.

All in all, he's doing a good job for now
sucks that it takes more than we thought I was one of the people that were sure he'd release before christmas
But at least we'll get the stuff he promised and the secret stuff he always puts in in each update (I hope its not only the naming stuff, although that is cool)

I look forward to the GDC, we might get more insight of the myth creation screen, after all, it was in the last GDC when he showed it, and he said it still was barebones
>>
>>168490268
On the other hand, I'm looking forward to magic in the next decade.
>>
>>168490268
I think part of the dwarf mode slowdown was making sure they wouldn't get stuck looking for shit that was in the middle of nowhere and end up camping out.

This might actually help with the armies camping bug too.

Also wonder if this means we'll get stuff like an axe we use for five historical kills will get a random name?
>>
>>168491092
Like I said, it'll probably be postponed until 2019, but not longer.

Remember that myths = magic.
>>
I havent played for about 3 years so I havent used the latest update. It is addictive like crack so it would just consume my spare time.

Think I should wait another few years til the next update so it has magic and shit?
>>
>>168491726
>Remember that myths = magic
No, the myths update and the functional magic system update will probably be separate updates, even if the "magic update" is fleshing out the basic groundwork laid by the myths update. Considering the complexity of both systems I find it hard to believe that both of them will be included in one single update.

Spacefox has such a weird mental disconnect, cute little dorfs, cute little animals, cute little gobs, bodyparts and gore and vomit everywhere!

>awww, look at that one on fire, how adorable

It was my favorite until I discovered CLA, and then learned how to make CLA nonSquare.

GemSet has a lot of the same bright cheery feel in higher resolutions, but I ended up going back to pure ascii tilesets+basic creature graphics since twbt fucks up adventure mode hard, and ended up just doing an HD ascii tileset without graphics nowadays.
>>
>>168495439
Part of the problem is the mount situation.

Are goblins especially reliant on mounts or something?
>>
>>168495494
Nah, adventure mode hauling units/riding units is weird, to be able to kidnap a kid you need to be able to pick them up and put them in a bag or backpack.
>>
>>168495494
>>168495696
It'll also be needed for stuff like:
>idiot companion jumps in a river and starts drowning
>buddy ends up saving your ass but gets wounded and passes out
>trying to help someone escape from something but they won't try to climb up a wall with you right away
>lifting a foe bodily into the air before walking over to a ledge and tossing them over
>getting into a rough situation and grabbing a hostage before backing out of the room with them
>kidnapping people
>having babies and actually carrying them normally
>hauling people to a hospital or whatnot for treatment
>helping a drunk home by letting them toss an arm around your shoulders and staggering alongside you
>playing as a wild animal or monster and grabbing prey by the throat then dragging them out of a room as they struggle
>>
>>168490216

>>168496167
Gotta love it.

Is there any way to have raised corpses equip items? It's somewhat annoying strangling these sleeping armoured swordsmen only to have their armour fall off the second they suffocate, then only having a naked zombie after that.
>>
>>168496167
Im hot for all that realism in DF, but saddenly, we are probably very far away from that

I remember one time when I settled in a biome which had a mist that made your entire body rot.

The rot was easy for my surgeons to cure, and I never lost a dorf to it. HOWEVER, the eyes of the victims always remained "mangled" for the rest of their lives, meaning no more masterworks for them.

In any case, I remember that there was this one incident when an entire group of herbalists got surprised by the mist. As they fell unconscious from the mist (another effect of it), they also dropped their harvest, and said harvest ended up with a coating of the mist's substance on it. When the mist had gone away, and the victims where brought to the hospital, the mist-coated food items were brought to the food stockpile.

Soon thereafter, I found my dwarves falling ill left and right in my food stockpile, after trying to eat the mist-coated fruits and berries.

Did it lower the drawbridge to the entry to the caverns with hell open?
>>
I thought of a good solution to clearing out the initial wave of demons. Basically just as soon as you breach it/get your breaching dwarf safe (optional), toggle a bridge that shuts off the path to your fortress, and then toggle another bridge that shunts all the demons into a chamber near/on surface that has a closed bridge to the outside, and then seal off access to your fort from the surface. So you'll just have a bunch of demons in a room waiting to be released. Then when a goblin siege comes you could release them. Or just keep them in there.

tl;dr you can just use bridges to seal off demons and potentially unleash them on goblin sieges/caravans.

>>
>>168508905
Yes, I believe separating them is essential. The last time I did it was with a giant humanoid made of rock with some kind of spittle/vapor, he tore through goblins like a machine, but If you can release him at a big group of invaers it's very likely they will win.

Right now I have a dinosaur with vapors (which apparently kills almost instantly) trapped near the entrance hall, but I haven't tried him against any invaders. Also an insect with webs, but I keep him for clothing.

Wouldn't the reverse of climate change be climate stability? Isn't that a nonsense phrase because climate is just weather over a long period? Why can't people go back to alarm over global warming or cooling and at least pick a direction instead of the vague "we're scared about something which is defined as accumulated change because it is changing!" shit?

Blah, anyways, looks like they took the map in this image and did this with it: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tqR2jikMfeU/VZbv1P2Gi1I/AAAAAAAABAk/iUpWTT8I5XI/s1600/europeelevation.75dpi_bw.jpeg which should be workable if you flip the shades back or use it as a mask?

>Wouldn't the reverse of climate change be climate stability?
No, the opposite of change is stability. But if someone saying "change [is] reversing", he's probably referring to the direction that's reversing.
>Isn't that a nonsense phrase because climate is just weather over a long period?
No, but yes, think of it as the average weather changing.
>Why can't people go back to alarm over global warming or cooling and at least pick a direction
The direction is clear and there is no question about it, earth on average gets warmer. Even people that don't believe in _anthropogenic_ climate change don't disagree with this. However, people don't understand that a global mean warming can mean that some points (in both space & time) get cooler (remember that stupid fuck that brought a snowball into congress as proof that climate change is bullshit?), so the term "global warming" isn't used anymore. Furthermore, it's not just the temperature that increases, there is a whole range of changes, which all are important, so just calling it "global warming" wouldn't describe it usefully.

>"we're scared about something which is defined as accumulated change because it is changing!" shit?
It's very well defined. And yeah, the mere fact that it's changing is already the problem.

I've been following the subject for decades now, and long learned that any discussion about it is pointless for any and all sides. That's the first thing I did
I mixed the height map with the sea depth map, so first thing I did was to trim away the lowest level on the height map (pure black) so the depth map could be seen through. Shit didn't look right and europe had lost land to the sea, so I tried the same with the depth map by trimming off the highest level (pure white) which made europe gain a lot of land. Hell, doggerland looked like dogshit.

They just both seem to skip a level, no matter what I do: it's just #000000 both at the sea and the coast

Alright guys, I've made an updated version of the google doc that has all the gladiator tournament information. I'm thinking since I have all next week free, I might organise a tournament like the one we had a few months ago. If everyone is agreeable to the idea, you can start sending in champions. We'll probably go for a 16 gladiator tourney, unless we get a surprising amount of combatants, so it's first in first served.

Here's the google doc >>https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1O9gK2tqxpqGkwe46vvBu51GNf30Tj8vPL33J5ni4Me8/edit#gid=1311675782

You can email me at [email protected]

Also if anyone wants to post some of the fanart created last tourney I'll add it to the doc, I only have the Sten pic I saved in case I ever did this.
>>
>>168540523
Can you upload the doc somewhere where you don't need an account to read it?

In any case, it's great to have a tournament again. This time I'll participate, as well.
>>
>>168538686
Well, yeah, if you do that you'll get something with three arms on one side, but making them left/right properly and adding lower arms+hands+fingers will work, it's what I did for the metal guts arm thing: http://pastebin.com/8XqkDbGH

Cooked plants dont produce seeds but brewed do.
and make sure you're gathering enough plants

you can change what gets cooked or brewed under z-kitchen
>>
>>168544579
What >>168545247 said is a possibility. It could also be that you're making excessively large farms. If you plant a lot more than you need, then eventually you end up with a big stock of plants that aren't being turned back into seeds quickly enough to fill overlarge farm plots. This is a pretty common newb trap.
>>
>>168546795

Actually, there's another file in that mediafire folder, I assume it's a world generated from that PW file in whatever version was current back then (uploaded on 2014-07-22, so 0.40.something?). I doubt it's useful, but as it's online anyway, I might as well post it:

Made a new world and everything. Im sure its some minute detail that im overlooking but its becoming aggravating
>>
>>168562183
Here's a few tips:

If you order max priority of every leather they'll send 4 bins of each kind and you'll never need to worry about it again. It'll be expensive.

High value materials like native platinum and aluminum, kaolinite, and expensive gems can be useful.

Pearlash, potash, lye, quicklime can all be requested to shortcut some of the fiddlier industries.

Request crystal glass and silk for moods if you don't have the means to produce them at home.

If you don't have sand, request that for a small glass industry.

You can request mugs of exotic materials that you can't normally make them from, like gems and silk (yes really).

Request plaster powder for your hospital if you can't make it on site.

If you have favorite dwarves, check their food prefs and see if you can order them from the caravan.

Aside from that, just fill resource holes, especially for weapons grade metals.
>>
I've never done anything glass-related, despite reading about it here very often. Can someone fill me in on the appeal of it?
>>
>>168566021
Low value glass (and clay) is an infinite resource on maps that have it. Plus it provides a bit of flavor over only ever using stone/wood for everything.
>>
>>168566021
Aside from sand being unlimited as >>168566260 noted, glass can be used for trap components, which are really valuable as low-effort trade goods, aquariums which can't be made from any other material (they're basically glass cages), and windows which can only be made from glass or gems. Glass doors are called portals, which is kind of neat. And building things from glass is classy as fuck.

>>
>>168565325
>>168562183
Requesting really expensive stuff like precious gems isn't worth while unless you've got tons of money in trade goods to buy it with (which isn't that hard to do, but if you're still new you might not have the means for that figured out yet (cloth industry=OP))

Buying lye is an extremely good deal if you have any use for it. They'll sell you a barrel full of 10 units of lye for about the same price as 10 logs, which you would have needed to make the 10 lye. They may as well just be giving you a barrel plus labor. I think quicklime is similar, but I haven't messed with it much. Pearlash and potash aren't such steals, but if you don't have a lot of wood it might be worth ordering them.

Do moods ever specifically require CRYSTAL glass?

Does the material a mug is made from matter to the dwarves who are drinking from it? Or the quality for that matter?

Is there a functional difference between a plaster cast and a splint, materials used aside?
>>
>>168567189
:D
>>
The labor system makes me nervous because I want every dwarf to be doing something useful.. so the number of idlers for instance gives just a little bit of anxiety to counter the comfyness. It gets worse as there are more dwarves, 80+ and I'd have no clue as to how to distribute labor.
>>
>>168567724
What can I say, cute little newbie modders derping around like that hits a soft spot... probably one on my head, but hey, you got enough there to see how to do similar sorts of creatures, those are the basic parts to control the body layout, playable situations, material composition, size, attribute range, and speed. Other stuff is mostly flavor and can be worked out later, but it never hurts to have this page handy, I use it all the time and know most of them well enough to just fake my way through shit: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Category:DF2014:Tokens
>>
>>168568093
I don't use therapist or anything, I just set what labours or squad I want on dwarves as they immigrate and forget about them and just make sure the industries are supplied. You sort of go from microing your starting dwarves and first wave to macroing a fortress and it's industries.
>>
>>168567273
I agree that new players might not be able to meet the caravan's profit requirement for expensive mats, but luxury items are nearly the only thing trade is useful for once you're good at the game. Ostentatious displays of wealth are good habit for a new player to get into anyway, because the initial allure of the superhard autism simulator wears off pretty quick once you learn how to play well.

I wasn't suggesting those for their value, but for their convenience. They just cut steps out of long production chains. If you're making clear glass, for example, pearlash will almost always be your chokepoint, as every delay in prior steps accumulates in latter steps.

Yes, cloth and glass are unique in mood requirements, as both will always require a specific type, and that type can be demanded even if you've never produced them on site. You can usually scrape out a green/clear glass or a plant/yarn cloth in a pinch, but if you haven't got spiders or rock crystal on site when a moody dwarf needs it you're fucked unless you took advantage of the caravans for it.

Not at all, it's just for the fun of it. The tool a dwarf uses to do a job never gives a thought. Unfortunately.

Exactly the same AFAIK. I'm pretty sure plaster casts are destroyed when they're removed, so it has a small anti-clutter effect. Otherwise it's just for the pleasure of a fully stocked hospital, or a wood saving measure for shallow and treeless forts.

I didn't mean for my advice to be taken as recommendations for achieving efficiency or minmaxing or whatever. Caravans aren't really an effective tool for that anyway, unless you're stealing from them or using exploits.

>>168570423
>I wasn't trying to criticize you or anything
I didn't take that way, and it wouldn't have taken it personally if you were criticizing me. That's what we're here for, right?
For such a seemingly innocuous mechanic, trade reveals a lot about a player's relationship with the game. Some players only use it to supplement their metal or food industries, some players barely trade at all, some players steal every caravan, some will only trade rock crafts, etc. There's a lot of room for personal preference and fort philosophy to creep into a discussion about it.
Interestingly, the way I interact with caravans has changed more over the years I've played than nearly any other aspect of my playstyle. For example, I always request the maximum of every gem every year, but if someone had told me to do that when I was relatively new, or even when I'd been playing for a couple years I would've called them crazy. Economy arc when?
>>
>>168571929
Yes they do. Burrows don't restrict where dwarves can go, just where they can perform jobs. That applies to children as well.

Well for example werebulls infested a lot of dwarves in this fort before, so I retired it and reclaimed after playing adventure mode for a bit. But now they keep sneaking in with the migrants. Alternatively, some werecamel, etc. will appear at the edge of the map and then bite a few of my dwarves, and I have to quarantine them, and there's a chance I'll miss one, and then it keeps spreading, and there is blood and gore everywhere.

What do you mean by flush? I'm considering keeping my gates closed to every migrant wave until the full moon.

So the coolest thing just happened. I decided to take a break from playing my succubus (male) character and play a swarthy elephant man monster hunter for awhile. So I'm trekking around the swamp, doing my thing, when suddenly I see some demons fighting a nightcreature spouse. So I go over there and wouldn't you know it, my original succubus character is right there with them, kicking the shit out of the thing. But I didn't want to risk him dying so I leapt in to ensure the job got done quickly, killing the monster with a few blows of my axe.

Man I just think its so cool how two different characters you make can end up meeting one another purely by chance and team up against some foe. Its crazy.

Werewolves literally never form lairs. The only sentients that live in lairs are the ones that somehow managed to alienate themselves from society and become hermits.
>>

I ended up tracking a werebeast only to find it was headed straight toward the camp where my demon friends were, and was about to leap upon and brutally maul my demon character. I had my elephant man literally throw himself into the path of the charging monster, and he took the hit instead (without it piercing the skin, thank Armok). We then worked together to put the thing out of its misery.

This is the most fun I've had in adventure mode for a looong time.

I've retired my elephant man and went back to playing my incubus character. So far my first adventure is leading these outlander humans on a safari to hunt some nightcreatures, since one of them (who I have decided is the leader of the group), talked about it with me. I joined up with them in the tavern because they'll need a guide.

Man it has been a slog. One guy got mangled by harpies and almost died before the rest of us could get to him. Another one, one of our bowmen, got his arm torn off by a giant lion. And when we finally found one (1) night creature, it took all of us tackling the thing and brutally beating it to death to come out on top. This is rapidly turning into some kind of horror survival deal.

Against human sized opponents with inferior material armor or none:
Picks > great axes > battle axes ~ war hammers > maces > 2h sword ~ long sword > short sword > spears

Against well armored foes:
Get a war hammer or mace or pray joint damage beats them unless you understand the combat system well enough to use multiattack with a whip and slide it up their nose to puree their brainmeats

Against someone or something larger than you:
Get a spear and jab it up their nose into the brain or tickle their heart with it, otherwise try to lop off heads or at least open up throats

>>168654524
Pikes/spears/morningstars/daggers (in that order) are good against armored opponents as well, and pierce superior materials pretty often. I disagree that picks>great axes, but the margin is pretty small. I would put halberds in the same neighborhood as well. The multi attack thing is true, but I have no idea why you would suggest whips, they're one of the only two weapons with the bad multiattack flag. Exploiting multiattack is a viable strategy with literally any weapon, but that's second worst option to do it with.
>>
>>168657054
Because if you don't multiattack with a whip you're stuck for 4/4 attack/recover instead of dodging away and letting the foe approach you to lash them in the brain.

Picks > All because there are no stupid npc chosen attacks, I should have specified I meant vanilla autoattack.

With aimed attacks I can kill anything with anything eventually, great axes and hammers will be easier usually just because of how I like to fight.
>>
>>168659040
4/4 attack and recover really isn't as much of a disadvantage as it's usually discussed. It's only 2 ticks longer for each attack than other weapons, which is negligible in all but the most dire situations. Using multiattacks with a whip in any but such a situation is a bad play, it lowers your accuracy so much.
>>
This shit is weird to get into, but it's already great. Is adventurer mode the deepest existing rpg?

Oh man there's been quite the turnaround in my world. When I started it up, there were several kingdoms of various races and one goblin civ in the far north. The problem is, this one goblin horde made up more than half of the civilized population on my continent. So as I was making forts and adventuring, it was always in the back of my mind that this would all come to an end when the goblins finally marched down and subjugated the entire world.

But when I updated the world in Legends Viewer, I found that the goblin numbers had shrunk from 20000 to 14000. While they are still the most numerous race, the others combined now outnumber them. I was curious as to how this happened, and it turned out that the elves were responsible. The goblin civ invaded the last remaining elven nation and attacked pretty much every site of theirs at once. But they were repeatedly and soundly defeated every time. Even if the elves fall now, I believe the goblin's have been weakened to the point that the largest human nation and next in line for conquest will have the manpower to hold the line.

And once the hordes are thin enough, perhaps a daring adventurer will journey to the dark tower in the farthest north, to put an end to the leader of the goblins once and for all.

Yeah, for a weapon without ATTACK_FLAG_BAD_MULTIATTACK. I don't know how severe the additional penalty is for whips and scourges, but it's certainly noticeable even at very high skill levels.

From this we can see that the first part of a multiattack series doesn't get the accuracy hit unless there are additional multiattacks with bad multiattack, and successive attacks also suffer //if they have multi as an actively selected option which is unnecessary after the first time//, and the hit from multiattack is smaller than the boost from being focused unless you're doing multiple attacks with bad_multiattack flag.

Let me tell you a story about Dumed Crimsonrings the Light Cloak.

Born from a peasant family, Dumed was a legendary speardwarf, the best I've ever seen. She'd already killed two forgotten beasts with her trusty steel spear. She named it "Craftsroof the Fat of Tenacity".

In 259 there was a bad siege with many casualties, but we managed to hold on long enough to break their morale. Dumed alone killed 20 of the attackers. As we're chasing them out, a werelizard turned up to take advantage of the chaos. Calmly, she engaged it one-on-one and stabbed through its heart without a scratch on her body.

With just 3 goblins remaining, she rushed forward to finish the job. But then.

She slipped on a moat and fell into the water. The goblins held her down until she drowned.

A memorial to Dumed is placed on the great hall of the fortress, to be admired by dwarves for generations to come. Her body is laid to rest deep inside the fortress, to be with her spear for all eternity.

That is the story of Dumed Crimsonrings the Light Cloak.

I thought about this for the previous tourney, but I forgot
How would you consider altering the stats of the tissues properties so combat is more realistic
Oldgenesis for example, does this, and its really satisfactory (they have nailed it better over the years)
For example, bone is tougher, but if someone fractures your skull 12 times, you will probably die, not like in the vanilla game
I would give the mod if you want it, atleast try it if you want

Initial Points: 260

Skills:
Skilled Lasher (-60)
Skilled Dodger (-50)

Equipment:
Iron Mask (-20)
2 Bronze Scourges (-96)

Backstory: Bane was a legendary mercenary, trained by a secret order of demons. He most famously raided a Goblin farm near dwarf lands, creating a massive cloud of smoke that poisoned the surrounding area. But few know the story behind this raid, of a Bat Man and See-I-Ay, his caravan left with no survivors, and the screams of those farmers as their marketplace was occupied, and Helphop, the elf raised demon forced to set the bombs that would destroy the town.

>Dwarves laugh at their ugly goblin faces as they simply raise the drawbridge
>due to an oversight on their part, the bridge simply retracts into non-existence as the lever is pulled
>cold sweat drips at every dwarf's back at the sight

How do we go about getting you a starter kit?

Here, I'll list out the pieces and you can assemble it yourself, you will need:

1 brick
1 piece of cord or string at least three feet long
1 table around three feet high

Tie the string to the brick and place the brick on the table with the string hanging over the side about six or seven inches above the ground.

Now lay on your back so the string is just touching your nose, then reach up and carefully but steadily pull the string until you are enlightened.

Yeah, it's kind of funny that in that instance it's Toady spreading misinfo about the game. You have to be a metropolis to qualify for the mountainhome promotion (and thus to get the monarch), which happens at 140. The pop trigger to qualify for the monarch MAY be 100, but if it is it's in an abstract way that players never experience because of the additional requirements.

Cons:

Gonna fuck around with some ideas that I had and things I figured out for ksbd since some of it will actually carry back from the dfaboo stuff, try to toss in things so we can have towers with monks studying the universe and incidentally gaining steel bones and soul-crushing punches, oni and dragons and tengu, daimyo and I dunno, maybe mongol goblin hordes?

It is desu

But I use this fort as my peaceful fast forward button so I can get back to playing adventure mode and not have everything the same, so this is something of a hassle I would have preferred to avoid. Then again, what did I expect would happen when I breached the caverns? I went right into layer 2 as well, totally missed the first one.

I should do this more often actually, but try to hit all three layers. Like think of it.

>Make a fort near the center of your map, easily accessable
>do nothing but dig and try to connect to all the cavern layers
>make a little shrine or something at the top
>retire

There you go, dungeon entrance to all the different layers of a cavern without the hassle of looking for pits or anything.

These. Mother. Fuckers. Literally.

I've had an intentional hungry head breeding pen going for a few years now, so whenever I see their birth announcements I just assume it's referring to MY hungry heads. Then I find these sons of bitches have been hanging out camouflaged in a black cap, probably for years, and I didn't notice.
Time for some archery practice I guess. Maybe I'll send the crossbow squad to clean up the elk birds that have been stuck in a pond in cavern one for 5 or 6 years on their way back.

Mountain embarks are not a sure way to get z level variety. If you want an embark that isn't flat, but something closer to the side of a mountain, you should check the relative elevation, which uses the lowest point in your embark. If the relative elevation shows all squares of same shape and color, you will get a flat embark, even if it's right in the middle of a mountain range.

You can get a pretty idea of what your embark will look like right from the embark screen, and it helps a lot if you're hunting for nice spots. You can even get a rough guess of stones and metals from it.

There are 19 hungry heads simultaneously shaking this guy around by the head. He keeps passing out from exhaustion and his upper spine is bruised. One of his backup dwarves is chasing a single hungry head around and the other is filling her waterskin. A woodcutter is on the way to chop down the tree the hungry heads were camping in, but probably won't be much help. Probably not going to make it.

Well basically, my character's town was surrounded by goblin camps and horrible monsters and stuff, and these guys were all listed as outsiders but were friendly with him for some reason. And since legal citizen guards are too valuable to waste on monster slaying, he was charged with rounding up the malcontents and promising them glory if they slew the foes of the state. And so he had to lead all these men and women to their deaths over and over until the surrounding lands were empty of anything that could pose a threat. But so many of them were lost in the effort, dying in various horrible ways from dismemberment to drowning.

He's an alcoholic now. I imagine he's constantly haunted by the faces of the people who he led to their deaths. But it was for a good cause, right?
>>
>>168768838
Yeah, he bled to death. A bruised spine is fine, though. It'll never heal but it doesn't impede function.

is there a mod that lets dwaves butcher goblins, eat goblin meat and make goblin skin leather armor? and humans and elves and demons and angels?
>>
>>168776386
The demons and angels might not be butcherable at all which you wouldn't be able to change as they're hardcoded (but idk if they are or aren't).

But you could just modify the dwarf entity's (civ's) raws to change their ethics which would at least allow them to butcher gobs elves and humans. So yeah it would be easy.
>>
>>168776386
>All demons have the [CAN_LEARN] token, meaning your dwarves will refuse to butcher them. However, if you mod the dwarves to allow butchering sapients, butchering a demon corpse will yield products similar to these from forgotten beasts, including shells

There ya go mate.
>>
>>168776692
>>168776839
Unfortunately ethics do not matter when [CAN_LEARN] is present, it's a bug sadly, having that flipped means the corpses get marked with the dead_dwarf flag and can't be used.

The interaction I posted: >>168776842 simply removes that token for a period of time so you can use the corpse materials after death.
>>
>>168776692
I don't know about demons, but I do know that angels can be butchered if they're made out of flesh. You can only eat the meat and use the bones if they come from the "pet" angels, though.
>>
>>168777590
You can butcher anything, but yeah, having that sapient tag keeps you from eating them, which is different from the 40.24 and earlier behavior where you could literally take control of a kid, kill their mother, and eat her brain while hitting your father with a hammer you made from the bones of his dead wife.

...not that I've ever done that sort of thing.
>>
>>168780340
>You can butcher anything
Nah. You can only butcher creature made out of flesh. This excludes many angels, since many of those are made out of bullshit materials like stone, glass and steam.

>the 40.24 and earlier behavior where you could literally take control of a kid, kill their mother, and eat her brain while hitting your father with a hammer you made from the bones of his dead wife.
This was purely a .40 phenomenom. In the earlier versions, you couldn't even butcher sentients. IIRC, if you tried, you got a message along the lines of "You're not feeling that hungry".

Basically, the cannibalism in 0.40 was entirely unintentional. Now that it's gone again, people assume that cannibalism is SUPPOSED to be in thegame, but isn't due to a bug or something. But like I said, it's actually the opposite. Cannibalism was possible due to a bug in 0.40.

It's supposed to be there for elves, goblins, arguably outsiders, wild animals, etc. It was broken one way where ethics stopped mattering at all with the 40.xx cycle.

You could also butcher/eat people if you waited until you were starving, but that was broken because various ethics should have allowed it.

It's broken now because you can totally butcher people, but even if you had a race with [EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER/KILL:REQUIRED] they can't do it outside of legends mode, and if you happen to dfhack your way into controlling a wild animal (or glitch your way into one) and somehow manage to use an edged weapon to butcher someone you kill, nope, still can't eat them. A giant lion can kill a dwarf, then if you added [GRASP] to their teeth you could grab something and butcher the corpse, but if you try to eat it... no luck.

I've totally butchered inorganic critters, btw, but that's not really a counterexample because I had added extra butcherable objects to them.

I'm not sure exactly sure how more effective they are, but I always heard that they're the best material for those types of weapons, it's almost three times as dense as steel and twice as dense as silver. I want to build a dwarven navy. How possible is this?

Wait for Toady to add boats

It should be but it isn't. We both tested it independently and determined that it uses the mace skill.

>>
>>168805986
I assume you have all all characters set up in the raws already?

Yes indeed, good sir, the preparations are all complete. The tourney shall begin as soon as it can, with each fight being followed by an intermission, where spectators can discuss the fight and place bets.

Here's a little teaser, two fearsome beasties, a monstrous tiger, and a gigantic lion. Hehehe...

>tfw you forget that forgotten beasts made out of flame cant be hit by melee soldiers

Atleast the hero of the day, Gagu Escortfurs the human crossbowman, survived having the fat burned of his body like it's nothing and went right back to sniping gobbos from the fortifications.
>>
>>168808637
I'll post the combat log separately in a post on it's own. I went with webm first but realised you couldn't actually post them if they had audio, and these webms obviously weren't the right kind, so I converted them to gifs. This is the first time I've had to post this sorta stuff. Always made do with images in the past.

Gifs are fine. The way we did it in the last tourney worked perfectly. We don't gain anything by having the combat reports embedded in the video.

Also I forgot to admit Dio for this tourney, maybe next time I'll remember.

Is dual-wielding viable in fort mode? or will the dwarf only use one weapon and completely ignore the second one?

since they bash with shields, they should also be able to hack with secondary weapons.

unlike adventurers, I don't think they can use multi-attacks, though.

too lazy to remove the fucking watermark, and the image is originally from another place (just like everything else from 9meme)

getting triggered by the 9gag watermark is such a 2010 tier meme.

It's not a meme, it's basic culture behavior that's been keeping /dfg/ alive for ages. The same thing is done to /pol/tards and redditors, but I don't see anyone complaining. Perhaps you have some affection for 9fag, but that doesn't change the fact.

Either way this discussion is over, be the thread dead or not. It's not as if I can make you understand why keeping this sort of people away from the general is good.

The people already know. The lady who I serve has made frequent mention of the fact that the king of our nation refuses to allow cattle to rise in stature and usurp his throne. I thought it wouldn't be that big of a deal but the population of the town has slowly been decreasing and I guess that is the cause. I will have to assemble my men and stage a coup.

Consider making webms slower anyway please
Not who told you that the first time, but the main problem with combats in DF is the speed of the battles
Just slow it down to the point where teeth or body parts dont teleport, and it'll be perfect
