Update: I am getting this. The error happened after I did "plastic surgery" in HCSK and cured some scratches and old gunshot wounds that were causing pain. If I'm reading this right, this is an example of FUCKING QUALITY RUSSIAN PROGRAMMING and while removing the pain source (the damaged body part) but not the pain debuff, he left a null reference to the pain source. I'm only really posting this in case it's useful for someone so you know what might break your save games.

Also I actually successfully cured wounds before without breaking my game, so my random guess is that this only happens if you save right after the operation while the pain debuff is still present on the patient, and then reload. It might be possible that if you wait long enough after the operation that the pain is gone, it won't break save games.

It's actually not that scary. You can go out just fine and even do farming. Watch the "toxic buildup" disease of your people. Initial/minor is no big deal. It increases during the time they are outside and it decreases while they are inside.
If someone gets to minor or higher restrict them indoors until it's gone.

It can easily last a month or more, so you will want to let them go out occasionally to prevent cabin fever.

I had a double scyther blade character, I was pissed when I learned that since it kills their manipulation their shooting goes to absolute shit. The scythers can shoot with laser precision, so why can't my colonist?
It was really effective though. Expect the colonist to absolutely SHRED anything in melee.

Manipulation affects hauling and cleaning speed, so dual scythers are useless at pretty much everything except melee and maybe research.

But the DPS is insane: scythe has 20 damage with attack speed comparable to unarmed.

If you want to keep it vanilla, you trade for it or rush the deep drills technology, though that will run out eventually too.

You can also make a second settlement in the closest mountains and make caravans to bring you minerals. Though it gets laggy and annoying with constant incidents generated on two maps.

If you don't mind modding, get the "set-up camp" mod which is a far better version of the mining outpost option, it lets your caravans enter a randomly generated local map where you can mine, without having to make a permanent settlement there.

There's also the deep core mining mod but it's expensive and fuck and mainly an endgame option. It slowly gives you resources at the cost of power.

Hay to chem is a relatively profitable job - if you ever have people with too much time, it's worth setting up.
The only problem is that it doesn't train much and takes a lot of time. Like stonecutting.

Colonist job priorities can be default. As long as the cook cooks first and hauls only after he can't cook, it's fine.
You want fine meal to be higher priority than simple so that the meat doesn't rot, and simple meal to only allow plants.
Once you have dogs, let those roam near kitchen and freezer. Don't let boars in because they eat too much and should eat grass, but any hauling animal that isn't a pig or herbivore will help.

This one won't have the usual limit of range and be configured to "drop to best stockpile" instead of "drop on floor".

Boars are among the best you can get.
They can eat grass, have maintenance below pig and barely above 1/3 of a muffalo, can help in a fight (and you butcher those that die in said fight) and can eat human corpses that are left in fights.

Only possible better food animals are chicken (eggs) and cows (milk). But that depends on your setup.

All herbivores and pigs do that. You need to designate animal zones in such a way that they can't eat unharvested plants or drugs.

It all depends on how many people you have. If it's only like 8, and the distance isn't halfway across the planet, 3-4 muffalos is plenty. Just make a shit ton of pemmi to pack with. If for some reason you do run low on food, you can just settle, hunt and gather for a little while and move on. Usually you get a trading event or two, so you can just buy food.

It's a good idea to dig out some distant mountains. This makes some hives spawn far from your base, making it easier to fight the insects.

You want to fight insects by opening doors and luring them through corridors by peppering them from the other side.
Then kite them by attacking them from two sides - when it reaches one dude, he hides and closes the door and the other one shoots the bug. Then the bug switches targets, goes for the second dude, who hides and waits for first dude to aggro.

Try to build bases in such a way that hives spawning in center point aren't death, that you can always go around.

I have no idea how this happened but I have a bugged empty caravan with no people in it outside my second colony that says "stopped because everyone is downed". It seems to me like the bugged empty caravan is blocking my pawns from forming a real one because they can apparently only exit in one direction from this map, and the bugged caravan is already on the world map tile they should occupy after leaving, which leads to the whole game breaking when they try to leave. Since there's no people in the bugged caravan, it can't move. So the pawns in this colony are basically stuck there forever now. Maybe I did form an empty caravan by mistake but that shouldn't be possible to begin with so I guess I'll wait for him to patch it.

Today has been a day of disaster. Yet another Orassan ship was destroyed in orbit, raining debris over the fortress. A cryptosleep block struck the hospital, destroying the roof. A cougar then attacked Proctor and succeeded in eating both her arms and her foot. She was dead by the time she reached the hospital - On the bright side, she will not be a burden to us as a maimed cripple.

An Orassan prisoner then rebelled, and presumably in a fit of sexual rage common to that accursed species, managed to bite off Bluejay's genitals. In retaliation, he shot her to death with his Vector. All in all, a bad day was had by most. On the bright side, a large number of tents were on board the Orassan ship, and many were saved - These may prove most useful in future excursions to Micar strongholds.

Ah see that's the opposite of what I would want, I'd prefer same colonists, new location. You get bored of the same base but modifying it substantially is just a hassle.

It would allow you to start a new game where your base is designed more on creativity than priority, in a nice location, based on the colony you established.

It might have been an earlier build but I clearly remember there being a craftable binocular and radio combo. You'd use a forward spotter who'd increase the accuracy of mortars by quite a bit.
