How difficult is caravan travel between bases? Am I liable to get fucked on if I only send 2 guys? I've got a lot of dead weight in my colony, so I figure they can do something valuable and go trading.

I've got hardly any medicine, food, or silver. No good growers, so no healroot, and even if I could, my indoor farms are busy keeping my colony from starving (volcanic winter).

Do Sandbags help turrets or hinder them?

I've made a basic chokepoint just off the left of my home because my animals are on that side and the raiders killed a few last time. Just a long wall with an undoored 7 by 10 room with an opening in the middle, I'll put a few turrets at the entrance corners so anybody walking through gets the walk of pain. Would putting sandbags in front of those turrets stop them from being destroyed as fast or what?

This is my second game after the first one burned so I don't know too much about it.

Last game a Thrumbos showed up, I attacked it and then let a passing caravan deal with that whole murderous rampage deal.

This game passing caravans don't pass so much, if at all. I built a wall around it when it was sleeping, will it get mad and bust out or stay there until it collapses and then I can kill it at my leisure?

They don't take anywhere near 30 shots to down so you can stop lying about that. They are stronger than human shooters and that is realism, they have robot eyes, processors and stabilizers and laser guns but they aren't OP, they're what they should be, superior killing machines.

If you think you "can't do anything at all" against them you lack the creativity to keep playing SK, shit gets way worse than scythers with laser guns. Boar is better for combat. Pig strong. Pig 5+ dps. Pig breed fast. Pig train easy.
No one is immune to pig, even if they're immune to bald.

Panthers are only 7.5 dps, so 3 huskies (or boars) outdps 2 panthers. And you can let huskies haul your crap, which is very helpful if set up properly.

The only time I'd use panthers over boars/huskies would be if I had a lot of tight corridors and expected infestations.

One has trigger happy, so I've given her a sniper and sent her to hunt shit in the distance, so she spends the entire day just spraying bullets into the ground. Expanded Prosthetics is really useful, and ensures you have something to work toward instead of having to wait for the mercy of RNG to bestow a trader with a needed prosthetic. High Caliber weapon pack adds a bunch of new guns and they are similar to vanilla, both crafting wise and balance wise. So if you're bored of generic Assault Rifles you can have AKS-74U, AUG, SG553, AK47, SCAR, M4A1 and so on which are all small variations of a rifle with different characteristics and so on with other weapon types.

As others said before, Expanded Prosthetics and Organ Engineering is almost a must have, it really adds to the cybernetics and medical part of the game.

Get Dermal Regenerator, it adds a single building that lets you get rid of scars that are otherwise unhealable, think plastic surgery. Goes well with EPOE.

Most mods I've gotten have been pretty balanced and fun, decided to try glitter tech to see if it would expand the end game, instead you get shit like this. Pawn builds and blasts around the map like the flash on crack and pcp. I feel sick just having it in my stockpile. I like this save too much to start over but I can't wait to uninstall this mod.

Antibiotics are not the same as preventative stuff in vanilla. Preventative stuff like malaria-block has to be taken at regular intervals or else it won't work. It blocks stuff from happening. It doesn't treat it if it does happen.

Antibiotics on the other hand increase a pawns blood filtration. Blood filtration is lowered by things like plague and infection. The lower it is the longer it takes to gain immunity. So by taking antibiotics you'll get better faster. In some cases it can mean your colonist survives instead of dies.

So I seem to be having a bug with the hospitality mod; I never get any visitors any more, and every friendly unit that enters the map is always from a "Friendly units from -Faction Name- have arrived to help!", or the very rare trade caravan.

I have a decent suspicion that the game, instead of spawning actual visitors, is instead spawning these support units, as they are very common, and occur even when there is literally no threat at all on the map.

I've tried removing all the beds, uninstalling the mod, then reinstalling it, but it seems it hasn't fixed it. Anyone got any ideas what I could do?

How did they get passed your defenses? Anyway, in few hours they will fall asleep and you kill them. Make a sleeping spot and nurse your soldiers in the meantime.

Trade plays a somewhat important part in it so if you'll have an easier time the closer you build your settlement to an existing friendly settlement (you can send caravans out to get goods and sell goods).

Some of the resources are either hard locked or soft locked behind trading so it's not by half optional to get at least somewhat involved. Even if you live in the middle of nowhere, there are still options for trading, but they're not nearly as easy or lucrative.

I'm coming from DF, playing it since 2010. Being able to actually control your units in combat completely got me hooked and I mostly switched to Rimworld now. In vanilla Rimworld production and crafting is a bit simpler than DF but combat is better and more tactical.

Play vanilla first. There is a modpack called Hardcore SK which is the equivalent of Masterwork DF. Everything and the kitchen sink, it's a bit unbalanced but adds a LOT of content and triples the time to reach the end of the tech tree from zero.
Of course there are also tons of other small mods and modpacks out there that you can install individually if you want a closer to vanilla experience after you play the game once or twice.

One random tip: if you see a trader selling "penoxycycline", buy a few (5-10). It gives your people a good chance to survive malaria, plague and other diseases that is otherwise nearly a death sentence. "Neutroamine" also works which is an ingredient for all advanced medicine that you can craft into penxycycline, but it takes some research before you can create it.

Tons of content, massive tech tree. It takes far more time to reach any kind of actual technology, expect to hunt and gather before you can farm, and expect to use wood burning steam engines for electricity before you can even consider making wind engines or solar power. There is also a ton of even more high tech stuff compared to vanilla.

Basically you have to work harder for everything, there are more materials and intermediate products that you will need to craft before you can make other things out of them that are just a simple one step production in vanilla.

There are also a lot of new incidents, some are unfair so either disable them in the scenario or don't be afraid to save scum. For example darkness gives you a 20 second warning, and then kills ALL of your people instantly that are not standing next to a lamp, kind of like the movie Pitch Black. Then there's Meteor Storm which can randomly just blow up your base and kill all your people. I usually disable those two.

It's modular, but I wouldn't recommend just disabling half of it.
For example Combat Realism is a major factor of it being somewhat unbalanced, but most of the weapon mods rely on it.

You can safely disable any incident in the scenario editor so you don't have the more game breaking ones.

He can definitely live indefinitely with only one lung, but if he's really wounded he might die in the surgery itself. I know you want to get rid of him in 24 hours, but for future reference if you let your prisoners heal up you have better chances of them surviving the harvest.

If they are still tired after 6 hours they will continue to sleep and will be well rested, those that don't need more will wake up.

So I just tried Glitterworld. Found a trader with a gun call an AGB or something, bought it for only 2900 silver. Tried it out on a raid, instantly oneshot three guys from half the map away, and set fire to the other five.

How is this balanced or interesting? It triggers a pinpoint explosion that pretty much ignores cover, firing faster than an SMG with EIGHTY TILES OF RANGE. ONE colonist with it could have taken out the entire raid. You might say "oh well the enemies will get them later on", but then it just becomes a moronic game of 2 second long ass-grab where cover and positioning doesn't matter.

Who thought these weapons were a good idea? Is all of Glitterworld this unbalanced and trash?

So ends the saga of Captain Blaster.

With his trusty elephant tusk in hand, he held down the fort against multiple raids, locked inside due to the toxic fallout that had plagued the region since before he arrived. But when he tried to smack a deranged Alphabeaver in a psychic wave induced frenzy to stop it from chewing up a turret, he was too late, and the turret was already fizzling. His bad back stopped him from getting out of the blast radius before his torso, right lung and stomach were shredded by the explosion. An ironic end for the so called Explosives Expert.

An hour after he died, the Toxic Fallout finally cleared up after weeks of near starvation. He never got to see the planet without it.

I just spent a season mining iron ore because I was always low on steel and when I finally checked I had 3000 ore in my stockpiles, it's just that the smelter job broke and didn't produce steel. Had to remove and remake the same job to get it working again.

Jobs should get a rework before full release if it ever comes. I don't see why we can't use a tiered priority system rather than a 1 to 4 priority one. According to the wiki (http://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Skills#Experience_Table) it decays at a greater rate at higher levels. Can't say I've ever tested it. I just accept it as a factor I have little ability to control and move on. That said, if you do the research, I'd be interested to hear your findings,

I know for a fact it decays greater at higher levels anyways, that's true. I have a lvl 19 artist who decays 6 at a time while my lvl 11 craftsman decays 2 in the same time frame.

I'm in a boreal forest at the moment. Maybe should've gone tundra. I've honestly been mostly getting by with hunting, and quick large summer farms, (main hydroponics have been dedicated to medicine), but I'm in the process of getting a second hydroponics basin up.

Wealth influences what Cassandra throws at you, doesn't it? I've not got the wealthiest of colonies - extremely defencible, but not wealthy. Most of my cash has been from organ trafficking.
