the purple ones are a currency. currently, you get 10 points for a win, 3 for a draw, and 0 for a loss in competitive. its 3,000 for a heroes golden weapon skin, which will apply a gold effect to all weapon skins for that hero (it can be turned off once unlocked).

it was once mentioned at the start of comp that overwatch might add more rewards for comp points, but have since gone out to say that they don't want to heavily incentivized playing comp, so its unlikely the we'll be any other thing to spend the points on.

I think part of the problem with Sombra was Blizzard has had a lot of experience with murderous stealth characters upsetting their playerbase in the past. Way back when I played WoW people absolutely hated Rogues, who could kill you right out of invis without you being able to stop them, and could just vanish if you fought back. Then they would camp your corpse and kill you again.

There's probably a saltwater lake outside Blizzard HQ filled with tears, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the Actiblizz beancounters sat down and worked out how much revenue they lost from people getting ganked.

So, they tuned her SMG to be barely more deadly than a hairdryer and made her yell and shout whenever she left stealth if there's an enemy there or not.

She can be useful if you concentrate on her absurdly fast EMP charge, know who and when to hack and have pro-tier tracking and as much as I love to play her, Soldier, McCree, Tracer or even Pharah are better as all round DPS muscle.

I find her interesting. Some of what makes a character interesting will be left up to how players interpret their ambiguous aspects, and of course, different people will disagree as to whether or not there actually is "something there," something behind a quality that seems innocuous or bland.
But I also don't see how most of the cast is any different than Mercy when it comes to this.

Name the three most interesting characters, and then bin them, because they're outliers who have received extra attention from Blizzard.
Now think of the three blandest characters. Then a fourth, and a fifth. There are a lot of characters on the roster that haven't been fleshed out that much, but who still have plenty of potential for being interesting.

From a sheer value perspective, it's hard to argue with Roadhog. You get both the golden gun AND the golden hook for the price of one.

It also has a psychological warfare component. What's more tilting than getting hooked at max range? Getting dumpstered by a GOLDEN hook. And exploiting the emotional vulnerability of your opponent can potentially win you games.

Contrary to popular belief you do actually have to aim with Winston, with such a forgiving aoe on his cannon you can just track the genji to death. If he used his dash to get in he'll die to you unless he can get an elim to reset it so he can get back out.
