Personally I always go for GTS first. The difference between squaddies and rookies is huge early game, plus you want to get Officers in your squad ASAP. Focus Fire and Oscar Mike is situationally useful early on, but you want your squads to do lots of missions together, since it leads to huge bonuses to infiltration and other things. Plus, some of the later officer abilities like Jammer are potential life-savers, Jammer and Air Controller are a huge help on retaliation strikes.

They're probably the most bullshit fucking enemy I've seen thus far, they have shadowstep, most likely hunters instinct, venom rounds, really high aim, good mobility, Lone Wolf, possibly Low Profile too from what I've seen and really high dodge coupled with Evasive. They do fucking obscene amounts of damage even to heavily armored soldiers (in addition to poisoning them for additional damage). You can get a little bit under 50% infil with that squad, let's say 48% to be conservative. (48%x1.75) = 84%

Not enough to get to 100%, but might bring the strength down a touch. I wouldn't do it unless my squad was shit-hot. Even then, I might still pass. No reason to throw away a perfectly good squad on a suicide mission.

Supply raid down, felt real good the entire way through. Only one muton showed up and unfortunately we blew him up, and everyone killed loads of ADVENT. At local strength 1, 38 enemies wasn't so bad.

Lesson learned, sharpshooters are fucking useless. Holotargeter started to see a lot of use after the first 3 steadied precision shots all missed. And double lightning reflex assaults is the bane of pretty much all of ADVENT's tactics.

I've been having a lot of luck with snapshot low profile snipers. They can keep with the team, have very good flanking capability, and low profile means you don't have to babysit them and stick your gunners and rangers in heavy cover instead.

Liberation 1: Hacking Guerrilla Op. The mission objectives won't actually have the word "liberation" in the title. But you can tell Liberation 1 from the rewards. It will just be a certain amount of Intel (with no listed Intel package). Concealed.


Liberation 2: Rescue Defector. XCOM must rescue a VIP from a car and move to the extraction point. Concealed.


Liberation 3: There are at least 2 possible mission types. One is a Dark VIP mission (which seems to be more common) and also a Destroy the Relay mission. Either mission type you get will have "Liberation" as part of the objective. Now do take note, Lib3 will also have an Advent strength bonus (above the regional base) meaning the baseline activity will be a decent amount higher as well as the tech you'll be facing. So go in nice and prepared for this one.

The last two are the network tower and assault.

Just had a Troop column ambush where I had the perfect opportunity to test out the Silent Takedown of the Ninjato on a weakened Viper who wasn't going to burn to death. Activated the ability, pathed around the fire that my Tech ambushed 'em with, and popped Fleche. My Shinobi proceeds to get lit on fire without moving at all. Also loses concealment without telling me, which caused me to activate all the rest of the troop column because I moved up to scout because the game told me that the Shinobi was still concealed.

So, yeah. Moral of the story is, use cheats at your own risk and expect the game to lie to you. A lot.

I don't remember them being unusually resistant to overwatch traps, but I haven't played vanilla in years. The overwatch trap itself is ultimately a risky strat whose main virtue is that you can do it anywhere, it's preferable to get roof flanks or let pods get close to your losblocking cover so you can grenade them to death. Well, unless you're using an overwatch spot that doesn't have cover for the aliens to end their turn in.

If you are a complete beginner, try to only restart missions instead of reloading saves in the middle of a mission. This will force you to at least learn from you mistakes and apply your new lessons in a similar, but not exactly the same environment which will prevent you from just cheesing with savescumming. A lot of people do honestman, but not everyone has the discipline for that, and ironman is a good way to prevent savescumming and to build discipline to eventually move to honestman if you want to.

Also do feel afraid to ask for specific advice about anything. Half the game is simply knowing stuff, like tech trees, strategic priorities, general tactics, specific tricks. Simply knowing more will make you a better player regardless of actual experience or play time.

Take some time to read through UFOpaedia.org as well.

Well, I exaggerated a little. I've only lost one guy so far to the codex thing. But everyone but my rookies has some sort of injury which will put them out of commission for at least a few weeks, my next story mission is the first black site assault in the eastern US and I'm pretty sure I can't pull it off with just rookies.

Don't worry about the AVATAR doom ticker filling up. Once it fills up, it starts a countdown timer. Taking any progress of the doom ticker stops the countdown timer. Strategically, always work towards unlocking a region for the next facility assault, and then knock it out once the bar fills. As long as you can knock down at least on pip, you are safe.

You just build them with supplies on the geo-scape map. If you are asking how to get more contacts, you need to do the proper research, and then build resistance comms in you base, and then spend intel to contact new regions.

For snipers, I would try a snapshot oriented build imo with damn good ground and low profile. Honestly, snipers are super weak early, even more than usual.
For shinobi, I see it as you can build a stealth agent, a survivable skirmisher, or a melee build. The skirmisher build is probably the safest and most reliable, agents are situational but extremely useful. I can't speak to the sword build yet, haven't decided.

Do keep in mind that Enemy Activity only counts as far as numbers are concerned. Enemy type is determined by ADVENT strength as well as how long your campaign's been going on. Two Mutons could easily demolish an entire rookie squad, and two Mutons is an entirely feasible encounter on an Extremely Light mission after the third month or so.

There is 21 intel and an intel package on the line, and all I have to do is take out an advent personnel (thereby "getting their attention") and get out. Problem: The mission expires in 4 days, 15 hours. Baseline enemy activity is "Light."

Using my squaddie shinobi (equpped with body shield PCS, a suppressor, the Shadowkeeper and a smoke grenade,) I can bring the infiltration time down to 2 days, 15 hours, thereby giving me a whole extra 2 days to dedicate to infiltration. If I also bring my designated Rooftop Koreanâ„¢ sharpshooter (an LCPL with Death from Above, also with a suppressor and packing some incredible aim,) it only increases to by eight hours, bringing me to a grand total of 2 days, 23 hours.

Is it worth it to bring my rooftop sniper or no? Without her, would I achieve close to 200% infiltration? Is there an infiltration calculator of some kind available yet?

Also: While I do think I might want to attempt this mission, is it even worth the risk? It would be my fourth mission, and I'd be putting my two most promising soldiers on the line.

Sniping out vips is actually really ez, the hard part is setting up your sniper on a position near evac and away from enemy vision. You really have to be careful about drones since they can fuck(aka trap and then reveal) a non-smg soldier real easily if you misposition him.

I would say that it is only risky if you play stealth risky(ex dashing into fog of war alot ,passing near windows, dropping from roofs where civies could be standing below, etc)

When it comes to DARK VIP assassinations, move to the evac first, and then move backwards to find the best place to swat the VIP and make a run for it. Good combos are Sniper + Officer, or Technical + Officer as you command your guy who took the shot and get them to evac the same turn.

Oh man, it finally happened. A snek pulled one of my troops, into about 8 active enemies and activated another 6. Guy survived by a miracle, the rest of the ayy had already taken shots or were disoriented/suppressed. A single plasma hit him and left him at 2 health, but he was rescued and healed next turn.

Put 2-3 grenadiers on your team

NEVER engage more than one pod at once (sometimes youll be forced to obviously)

scout with phantom ranger to help you do this

The most important thing is ensuring no enemy gets a good attack off on their turn (in short kill every enemy on first contact) because cover is too shit and you will be hit

build the awc 2nd and always keep an engineer staffed to cut down on recovery times because your A team will need to carry most of the game for you, dont waste time on training backups if you arent forced

offensive research and items are almost always better than defensive

as an exception to this, do the faceless autopsy as soon as you get it and make a mimic beacon because its a get out of jail free card

get a sneaky ranger who will scout
move your squad togather, in a sort of diamond formation after revealing most the area with the scout

get Los preview mod, so you dont have to count manually each turn where you cant move (although the game does indicate if you are getting into the los of an ayy group)

early game is very much rng based, bring nades and a napkin because youll probably lose a soldier or 2

use your ranger as clutch solution for the fucked up situations

you will have ayys walking into your overwatches, and that should help you eliminate them on your own turn

Basically, you get dropped in an urban map that you need to rescue the haven personel, destroy an alien relay that is in the middle of the fucking map and if you don't destroy it, the ayys will get reinforcements every two turns and after all that you need to kill the aliens in the map, while they fucking murder your guys. I managed to save 3 people from the haven and 7 soldiers got wounded. Honestly only managed to win because my sharpshooter climbed on a building and somehow he could shoot the relay across the map.

I think I fucked up. First time through XCOM2 (vanilla).

I've seen Mutons in maybe two games total before this. I just got into a retaliation mission and now there's big ass melee versions of them and they're in groups of three.

And then two faceless joined the party while I was dealing with the last Muton in one particular group.

Then there was a group of Two Advanced Troopers, One Advanced Officer, and One Shield Bearer to rape what was left of my squad.

I've not upgraded to Magnetic weapons.

I'm thinking I should just restart. I had no idea what I was doing. I've got two squads in reserve, but I think I could do better. I only just recently found out how to see how many Alloys I had (can't believe I missed that) and I recall accidentally making the wrong building, but demolishing it immediately instead of using it..

I'm not saying Medical Protocol is not a good choice. People that play without Medical Protocol tend to simply avoid getting anybody wounded. Early on this can kind of make sense since most shots will end on instakill anyway but later on healing is very helpful.

Something i did before was bringing two specialist. One as a dedicated hacker with combat protocol and everything relate to that and another as a dedicate medic.

SLG is pretty easy in LW2 as you can make make as much AP ammo as you want reasonably cheaply.

The rulers now only get a 25% chance for a reaction and a LW2 squad has a ton of firepower. However, they're still extra pods and missions tend to be harder in LW2 so they do still make the game noticeably more difficult.

By the way, in LW2 you don't need to do the Nest mission to unlock the next tier of AH weapons, you only need the required techs.

That was before LW2, so Shinobis were not as important. I started with squadsize 6 so i would be doing missions with 7 people as soon as i got the GTS. That allowed me to bring EITHER a Shinobi or Assault and have every other class + 2x Specialist.

With LW2 that would be much harder to pull off. I just tend to have a squad with a Medic and another with a hacker and i pick longer missions with the one with the medic. I try to priorize sharpshooters and shinobis as officers but specialist is a solid third choice because you can aid protocol/medic protocol/combat protocol and then use your officers abilities while staying in the back.

I've been loving flashbangs (I might actually ditch the boomer grenadiers for support ones) and area suppression for control, but delaying seems like an awful idea because at least one of the 3 pods my shinobi sees will probably patrol into me.
