I play it with EP and FoTE, because they're now built to be played together since EP's last patch. They work pretty seamlessly together, basically DEI lite for Attila.
The only thing I'd recommend is that you get the English names patch for them both, because theres only so much latin names I can take before things start to meld together.

Because Japan is made relevant in your question, the Imjin War comes to mind where Toyotomi Hideyoshi tried invading Korea and making an empire shooting out from Japan. It went pretty poorly because the Koreans were pretty neato at naval combat and China finally got their shit together.

Japan aside, The "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" comes to mind, but that would be hard to depict considering the written accounts are more poetry than fact.

Aside from that, there were several warring states periods within China, so many that China has a proverb about it called "The Mandate of Heaven."

I would kinda dig it, but there would be simply more than just those 3. There'd be ALOT of nomadic tribes to the North to contend with, Jurchens, Xiongnu, Mongols. Then, of course smaller states in Indonesia, Indochina, and the Indian dynasties or kingdoms.

why is warhammer so half-assed? Since its a fantasy game it had a potential for some crazy shit, like battle maps that significantly affect how you fight on them, or different regions of the map having different conditions, but it has none of that

it doesn't even have seasons, or night battles, the latter could be used to further differentiate the races, the humans and dwarves would use lanterns and shit, while the VC wouldn't care about it being dark at all, they are fucking skellies, they could have had weird landscapes in Norsca to show the chaos corruption, but instead all they have is an ugly as fuck red filter, Athel Loren could have had maps with crazy ass random aggro trees, but WELVES literally just have 1 (ONE) settlement defense map. In fact lets talk about settlement defense, they had a chance to make this something unique and they went for field battles for small settlements, and one wall for large settlements

Warhammer is not a bad game, I've played it for 200 hours before I got bored of it, but I can't help but notice all the missed potential, when even historic titles have more variety in maps than fantasy, you know something is amiss

Blood for the blood god while still a shitty tactic on CA's part, does change the feeling of the game in what I think is a important way. BUT that does depend on how much you'd be bothered by seeing guys getting smacked by a giant or cannon ball and not getting cut ni half.

I think a lot of it is because it's not their IP so they're unsure how to roll with it. Plus I don't think they knew how well it would do, I mean especially after the backlash from Rome II and with the 'eh' sales of Attila. Feels like they wanted to play it safe just in case this was a flop. I'm just hoping that with the money Warhammer has made they're going to put back in a lot of those features you mentioned. If they can bring the map types and overall features/gameplay up to Attila's level then I'd be super happy with Warhammer.

And yeah the whole thing with the maps feels weird? Like look at what the community has created so far and all CA can do is hilly fields with the same tools? I'd really love to find out why that is.

this is the kinda thing I was talking about when I said missed potential, now I don't know much about warhammer, but say DoW2 handled chaos corruption in a much more interesting way, where it was pretty much a choice whether you allow some corruption in exchange for cool gear and campaign effects or go full pure

what if the traits like the "likes chaos" one actually did something interesting? they would all generate chaos corruption, but also get bonuses depending on what chaos god the character gravitates to, so if its Khorne than the character gets a lot to melee damage and attack, Tzeencth gives something like higher miscast but also higher spell damage etc

chaos corruption should have been something more than just a red tint and public order malus

Honestly stuff like this would be spot on. Chaos corruption tends to start more as a mental thing that letter develops into a physical one as you fall deeper and deeper into the well.

So yeah I'd love to see something like if that trait popped up over time/triggers it can get more dedicated into a path. so one the one had you're getting absurd buffs that only seem to get better and better at the cost of spreading some Chaos corruption. Until next thing you know you're general has gone off either with the army or done something like spawn a stack of chaos spawn.

Overall I'd love to see them play with the themes more. Having all Gobblin/spider armies coming out of forests, having hoards of chaos beasts coming down for the wastes, having chaos cultist rebellions that use mixed chaos roster and local roster units, rouge necromancers using low tier zombie shit stacks, Ghoul kings leading armies of Ghouls.

There's huge scope, three land theatres and all the trade routes. Naval combat, I enjoy the mix of gunpowder and melee a lot. Can still trade regions and technology. Agent spam isn't debilitating.
And it's pretty much fixed now. I ran through a couple of campaigns last year without any noticeable bugs.

Everyone just complains about France and Spain being 1 region (which is really dumb) and bugs that appear to have been fixed.

Yeah the minicampaign and the cost increase it justifies is straight up criminal.

Beastmen's campaign tools in general are pretty cool though. Aggressive ambush and stealth camp are great fun. And you can actually use multiple armies together.

Warriors of Chaos is 50-100 turns of monotonous boring growth up north where you have to work around CA's poor implantation of Norscan interaction. And while the nearby stack penalty forces your elite armies to fight multiple stacks by themselves, which is cool. It makes the early game even more bothersome.

hey that was me anon, to put it in depth you manually mark ai interest points 'defensive hill', then put the approximate directional facing, or circle/line you want them to form across to take advantage of this terrain.


My problem is even with forced manipulation to the extent of tweaking the ai preferred 'deployment line' the ai still clump up between the majority of one crossing, with a minimal/suppport force on one other.

Thinking on this, this is the exact same thing that happens with siege ai, even with multiple armies.. the ai clumps with a paltry show of force on every gate but 1. so clearly the ai is still rather stripped.

Most stacks I had in a campaign was 6, and only 2 of them had any kind of elite units. The other 4 were trash provincial armies I left to protect my shit from Norscans and faggot Greenskins. I controlled 7 provinces, and my income even with 3 of them being fully upgraded to make dosh was around 2k a turn.

The Empire economy sucks a big fat dingus. They have 1 building that provides income, raiding is negligible and so is sacking. Vampires have multiple income buildings, Dwarfs have all kinds of ways to augment their income, Greenskins get dosh from multiple sources, Wood Elfs can fuck off with their cheat code level of income and Beastmen and Chaos can't practically ignore income once they get their snowball rolling.

Depends on your taste really.
If the enemy uses archer cavalry then you might want to shoot them, they are vulnerable to missiles.
Generally sword units have less defence and are more vulnerable to missiles. Spearmen are good at blocking missiles, so don't waste ammo on them, unless you shoot them from behind, but that means they have to be engaged/in safe distance from the archers.

Hardly any depth to building
Public order is as simple as keep two units garrisoned.
Sea battles are horrific.
Sieges are a mess.
The AI does not know how to attack you and will let you unload all volleys of at them.
No unit variety, and late game units are pointless since you will never get them unless you gimp yourself and go slow.

One this good about it is the speed of combat, and the grand campaign map is really good.

Pre Rome 2 you could build many real buildings, and trade was a natural web that you cultivated organically between cities. You plant all the seeds, like roads and ports, and as cities grow and are well-managed, they realistically develop economic roots. Custom battles don't have the incentive to keep units at strength though as you didn't spend time and money recruiting them and you don't have to continue on with whatever is left at the end. The campaign should frame the battles. Retarded city management does not add to that in the slightest and is a half assed attempt to pander to retards. It could be good if they put effort into it and added lots of systems around it but they don't.

I remember back before Rome 2 launched and CA was promoting it they did a Q&A. Some retarded bitch stood up and asked the panel if she could enjoy Rome 2 by only interacting with the campaign map and autoresolving every single battle and they told her that she could and they built the game with people like her in mind.

CA should either go full on or not at all rather than adding busywork for the sake of it.

I liked the food system in Rome 2 where you could have certain regions focus on food production and other regions focus on industry for example. Attila fucked it up with each province requiring to have their own food supply. I usually end up having hundreds if not thousands of food surplus towards the end of the campaign and at the same time getting notifications of 1 or 2 provinces facing famine because apparently you can't import food from other nearby fertile provinces like you could in Rome 2.

When you have like 4 cards of horses surrounding about 20 guys who are routing it takes them a lifetime to get them all because they just run in circles around the outside of the melee and the ones on this inside apparently don't do anything.
What's more if there's an enemy unit running in to try and stop you, after giving them a move order it to stop and get away it then takes about 30 seconds for the unit to stop fucking around and actually move. It normally happens that most of the unit follows the move order while a significant chunk of the unit just gets stuck, that chunk that gets left behind doesn't seem to kill anymore routing enemies and then get charged by the incoming enemy since they're too retarded to run away with the rest of the unit.
It's so frustrating it's like I'm playing Medi 2/Rome again, at least in those games when you really encircled a unit they really brought the slaughter but their chasing was terrible

Doom and Darkness and Soulblight stacked can make even elite infantry route.

Spirit leech is always good, very cheap spell that can do reliable damage to a lord or single target unit.

Lore of Vampires

Invocation of Nehek is crucial, cant really use vamps without it.

Raise dead is OP at the moment and shuts down skirmishers.

Wind of death can kill an entire front line if used properly.

I think the cool down is 2 seconds, and they raise on top of a unit in a few seconds.

I dont think you can get units away from them once the spell is put down, you also get 7 summons per castor and it cost 2 mana.

With the success of Warhams outpacing any expectations they have said that they are broadening the scope of the series.

Another major thing is adding their own units which occurs with some mounts being stand alone monsters and word is Bretonnia will have a few out-off-book units, so they can add to whats established in 8th ed.

Might see a few minor factions that don't have books. Tbh I don't think there is a DLC they can make that won't make money, if they do an oddball faction I think people will be excited for the fact that it IS an oddball faction getting something official for the first time instead of being a footnote.

Shogun 2 does have only 1 faction since they all have pretty much the same roster. The starting locations are what make the clans just a little bit different. Can't talk about Rome 2 since i never played it. Mousillon might be interesting even if they have the same roster since they start on the other side of the map. Bloody hands, Middenheim and Boerdeloux however are just Greenskins, Empire and Bretonnia with a different paint coat. You start in the same area, fight exactly the same enemies and recruit the exact same units since CA can't be bothered to put any actual effort in most of their Free LC.
I hope Bretonnia will be something new and different though since they've been delaying it for so long.

What unit size should I be playing on? I normally play on largest possible, but I just found out multiplayer is locked to large. Is this because it is the most "balanced"? Some of the unit sized are really weird, like 68 men for crossbows, which make me think its not the canon size. On ultra lords take no damage from non elite units, and missiles unit basically dictate the battle because of how much fire power they have.
