update on my RTR campaign bros

invasion in east slowed down but took 2 cities and almost 3rd, the greeks (who are only still alive cause they retreated to the islands) launched 1 army into turkey near south of pergamon, black dots on map show full strength seleucid armies blue dots are full strength roman legions

invasion in the west in africa has gone better, carthaginians have 4 armies stuck in corsica, most mainland armies have been destroyed and 5 cities under siege, only 1 casualty though Augustus the Cunning gave his life during a fight which involved the majority of Carthage's mainland forces

TW is easy to get into and nowhere near as autistic as /gsg/. Its essentially just building up towns and raising/lowing taxes. Attila adds politics, and building up your provinces is more complicated as you have to deal with food, squalor and fertility. Thats about as difficult as TW gets. Otherwise just enjoy the battles.

I found the early game more interesting than the late game. It just gets so boring, and every playthrough is the exact same. Space monguls and OP ancient empires aren't exactly an interesting challenge.

The Empire is humanity's bulwark against its enemies (chaos, orks, etc.). It's relatively sophisticated on a technological level, and it mirrors the HRE in the early modern age. Further, the citizens of the Empire primarily believe in either Ulric or Sigmar, with some minor deities also being worshipped. CA will look at what the community creates and take notes. Clearly bigger maps with terrain breaking up the map, more elevation play, or just anything that isn't a shogun 2 open field.

Not every map has to be crazy, especially in the badlands, but some less monotony across the board with some memorable instances would be nice. Let alone what criticism they have been getting for future siege design. Shit is crazy in Warhammer, the DLC maps are good (aside from some WElf ones, fuck you same ""settlement"" map) but we need more good maps, more different maps, a few map types as well.

But more shit for the community is good, in return the community indirectly gives CA map design feedback. Get to work CA, Warhams 2 better kick the shit out of OldWorld,of which I'm a fan.

Hole up at one of the entrances into your fort, leave the scout equites outside of towns with forward deployment

Use testudo formation so that your shitty comitatensis spears and whatever swords defend heavily and don't die too quickly

wait until the enemy army inevitably banches up against the testudo trying to pry it open, get the second infantry unit in there to hold the line for a little bit longer if it's free

when the enemy commits most of his army to the moshpit, (especially cavalry) roll in with the equites and decimate his ranged units because they have fuckall melee defence and attack stats, but try not to let them fire shots into your cav while they're fighting because they will kill it quick

once you're done mopping the ranged units up, get to the moshpit and charge right in the with cav, since the enemy will have their back turned to you you will get literal hundreds of kills with a charge
then immediately pull the cav out and charge again a few seconds later

if you have an archer garrison unit, fire whistling arrows into the crowd
that will make the enemy rout almost 100%, then you just mop up with cav

it's important to be quick about all this because you're on a "my melee units are gonna die inevitably" timer, and you have to kill the ranged units and start charging the moshpit before that happens

it may take a few tries before you learn to do it right, but once you do these battles become a breeze most of the time

if your opponent brings axe-wielding units like germanic warband and such you're fucked because they will slaughter your infantry really fast, so use any skirmishers and archers that you might have to weaken their numbers as much as possible before they get to melee

Suebi Champions are a ridiculously good unit you can get very early in the campaign, like 20 turns in to the campaign early. Plus they're one of the few units with the highest morale in the game

Regarding spears tho, swords easily beat spears in a 1v1 in Attila so that makes the Suebi Champions an even better choice since you'll be fighting WRE spear units all day as the Suebi. Spears are usually just good against heavy cav factions like the Huns or as a regular anvil unit

The oceans aren't that big in the warhammer world, compare their size to the continents. Also, ulthuan is actually pretty hueg and acts as a halfway point.

The Warriors of Chaos as they are generally known only fuck with the old world.
NotAsia is always dealing with the NotMongols of Chaos, but NotAsia never matters.
Naggaroth, bordering the Chaos Wastes at the North have a series of watchtowers overlooking the mountain passes. Chaos tries a lot of shit there but never succeeds.
Down south you have the Lizardmen, who are technically the arch-enemy of Chaos. But only really Daemons which can teleport into corrupted ruins and shit. And every now and then some Norscans.

But yeah primarily consider it an Old World thing.

They're definitely my favorite race along with the KANGZ.

Essentially they're all artificially created biological drones that the Old Ones had to take care of the world.
Unbelievably intelligent administrators in fat frog bodies. Straightforward Saurus as labour.
Skinks as all the busywork inbetween that requires adaptability.
And there is another race that are practically just Saurus 2, they look cool but can effectively be discounted from the lore as they're just tacked on the later editions as 'oh and this one which also did what the Saurus did but bigger'.
Then Chaos happened and the Lizardmen fought them almost singlehandedly across the entire planet.
Most of the Slann were doing mental wrestling with the tides of Chaos and got mindfucked. And rather than having their intelligence burnt out, they developed a system of hibernation to sleep it off. Which essentially took them out of the picture.

Of every race on the planet only the Eldest Slann had ever seen the Old Ones, and they all died in the war.

Eventually the Elves came up with their ritual which stabilized the Chaos gates and restricted Chaos to only emerge from them(most of the time).
Which the Slann basically made work, without the Elves even knowing.

Meanwhile the Lizardmen had been reduced to only a few southern places on the map.
With Slann being asleep 99% of the time, the Skinks and Saurus(mostly the Skinks being the brains behind the operation) found themselves as biological drones without directive. So they went quasi-tribal, still obeying the Slann, but often unable to understand them, on the rare occasions one wakes up for long enough to mumble something.

Everyone tries to steal their gold because it is gold. And the Lizardmen frantically defend and reclaim it because gold is a convenient corrosion-resistant material and thus one of the few things that Old One or Slann knowledge survives on.

Also Skaven are their most common enemy at "present".

The Skaven in question being Clan Pestilens, who tunneled/found tunnels under the ocean and came up in an abandoned Lizardmen city, and corrupted it with their plagues n' shiiiet.
The plagues being a massive threat to the Lizardmen as new Lizardmen are produced out of these nanomachine-esq biological spawning pools. And the Skaven can piss in them and take them out of comission forever. The knowledge of their fabrication lost along with the eldest Slann.

With the closest competitors being select Chaos champions and Undead, the Lizardmen roster feature all the oldest characters in the lore.
I keep saying biological drones, and seeing the Lizardmen as robots really makes sense. You have your select eight thousand year old Saurus who has been fighting for most of those eight thousand years.
You have a sneaky skink that got lost in the realm of chaos for thousands of real years/zero to infinite whacky chaos years, killed chaos shits all the while and eventually made it out with his sanity intact.
And the surviving Slann which are the oldest and strongest mages in the entire setting.

There is also the spirit of the oldest Slann hovering around his mummified body, who only remembers the nuclear-equivalent of a spell he used to scorch earth himself and a city after their century long siege against chaos was lost.
So the Skinks cart him around as a magical ICBM.

My advice is to download it, open it up. then watch the stream while doing what our boys in ca blue are doing on screen. that way you save yourself a few hours of not knowing how the heck you do anything.

Even with the town at level 3 the battle maps have ruins everywhere, the town centre is a church (Even thought I destroyed all churches on turn 1 and am currently Graeco-Roman) and look almost the same as a level 2 town map.

Yeah it doesn't grab me the same as KF1. But there are some nice things for sure.
The cross-perk weapons are a superb treat.
The netcoding is enough for me to not want to kill myself at up to 300 ping. All of my HoE wins have been on American servers(Strayan). Well, at least with the exception the crossbow and the grenade launchers, the projectiles of which are server-side for some reason.

Survivalist truly shows how lazy the tripwire is as well.

Races only differentiate on having a diplomatic malus.
The most common inter-race bullshit you usually see is a random beastmen or orc tribe paying your fellow elector count to go to war with you.
The Wood Elves have techs(one for like +40 for greenskins and a late game one which is like +50 to EVERYONE) which boost their relations with EVERYONE. I guess as some sort of interpretation of their most true of neutral alignments. It also works with the fact that they can generate amber through alliances. And they would be willing for Vampires to take over the Empire if the Vampires are more amenable to their treefucking ways.
And stuff like that happens sometimes.
It isn't really common.

No. Against Dorfs savage orcs are never a good pick outside of rushing the flanks. The bonus of getting magical attacks across Wurzzag's army is another hindrance since dorfs also take reduced damage from magical attacks (this is not as intended from a TT perpspective but it is true in game).

Then to kick it all off savage orcs are good against state troops but late game with no special/rare restrictions and greatswords roaming the land like common fodder you don't do well there either leaving Bretonnia, and other orcs as good match ups for you unless you just abandon the savage orc theme all together. But then why play Wurzzag?

Shitty after the first 40-60 turns. Wurzzag is pretty great on his own, he can buff the ever loving shit out of Savage Orcs. But there is no Savage Orc Warboss, so those redline skills that buff savage orcs aren't found on any other generic lord.

He's like half a Skarsnik. Without his equivalent Night Goblin Warboss savage orcs are worthless beyond Wurz's army. Making mid and late game shit.

Okay, I gave it a whirl and yeah the AI is fucked.
Is the defensive side supposed to be the bottom/left? Just seemed the other way to me. Not that the AI will behave either way anyway.
Tried two games, one 1v1 one 3v3. first game they only went the one crossing. Second game all three plus my two allies all went to the same crossing.

Deployment area should be bigger, esp for team battles.
And there is plenty of room to vanguard deploy across the river on either side, if that is another consideration.

I didn't comb it for flaws, but the ground up against the mountain range is a pretty sharp polygon angle.
Probably best to hide it with trees or something.
And the bottom crossing has a bit of jagged terrain chunks just jutting up over the water.
Units had difficulty routing(they just seemed to spin around on the spot, though I didn't zoom in to closely observe this) at the bottom of the bottom crossing as well.

Makes me question if the reason for no crossing maps in vanilla involved the AI being lobotomized from its already retarded state.

Finally, the long stretch of land on the eastern side, up north doesn't really serve a purpose. A fourth crossing far from deployment might be cool there. Otherwise I don't see any circumstance that the land will ever see footfall.

yeah I suspect that the ai has been lobotomized completely,
for example

what I ended up doing was forcing a preferred deployment zone (which means basically there is a line along the inside of both deployments that the bots SHOULD follow to get an even spread, but as you noticed with 1v1 they still clump up to one side.

some other things I did were to mark the river crossing points as 'defensive hills' to the ai, to trick them into going near them. doesn't seem to have any effect.


cheers for input on the mountain range, I was looking everywhere else to try and comb for errors and that has slipped through.

As for the large strip of land, those were my original deployments, but the ai was so gimped it wouldn't even move!

I play Beastmen campaigns like I am a WoC vassal. I removing the WElfs is a pain but getting rid of them before the EndTimes is the way to go. I really wish Beastmen could erect Herdstones in Athel Loren which makes no sense they cannot but its a really good base of operations just have to use the 2 attrition immune stances. From there fuck over the main playable races to allow Archaon and Friends to steam roll as hard as they can.

The thing I hate about GS campaign are with playing around with the Dwarfs so much you can't go off raiding humie shit until you have the Dorfs pushed way up World's Edge and you aren't at too high a risk from other tribes. But yes the "fuck the player" script is really annoying. Also for GS I really miss raiding Bretonnia since that faction doesn't exist anymore under the Wood Reich.

They're not that important most of the time but if you're fighting against unfavorable odds they become super valuable. It happened to me more than once where all I had left was 2 varghulfs with a Vampire Lord and they routed 300+ dwarves, winning me the battle.

If you/Mannlet start the battle, then you leave your settlement to attack them in the open. If you/Dawi start the battle and Vampire's are in a walled settlement (which Drakenhof is), then Mannlett should be sitting comfy behind some walls.

While it is a fun game and I have hundred of hours in it still has a lot of work to do but could be the start to making the best TW.

I don't like how fucking ugly Attila was and the mindless spreadsheeting that didn't really do anything. Balance was a joke which in Warhams was an early issue but at every pass its gotten better, current patch is the best balance wise outside of summoning mechanics.

Didn't suffer from a terrible launch like R2 but I hope CA continues to improve it like what they did with R2 and didn't with Attila.

Overall, good game, worth the money, but hopefully the second installment makes a lot of improvements.

Spread the spearmen thin, spread infantry right behind them for reinforcement against charges and faltering lines, a square of archers further in and your general dead center to keep everyone in good morale. There is no difference. "Streamlined" is just a fancy way to say "dumbed down". There is no real thought needed for anything you do in the campaign. Battles are not "deep". The only new things they added is flying units and magic which quite honestly is really underwhelming considering how many other features they ripped out that were there in previous Total War titles.

Factions aren't really that unique either. Over half of them share the same damn "unique" mechanics like world roots, underway and beastpaths Don't get me wrong i still like the game but calling it nothing else but casual total war is giving it too much credit.
