Honestly I'm not that big a fan of z-levels. Wears out my <> keys and makes it less simple/intuitive to build the base and keep track of shit.

Simple XY made for a nice, streamlined, casual base-building experience that really contributed to RW getting popular (96% on steam now?).

Seems a bit big, (2x as much as what I'd aim for), but yeah you could do it.
Just set up defenses at the necks, farms in the middle, and dig into the thickest mountain for shelter from arty fire.

Worth knowing: is that slate or granite?
Slate's better (slate & marble are top-tier)- you can buy granite when you need it, and otherwise using it as your primary rock is a nightmare- twice the health (mining time) of other rock-types, and carved-out fortifications will have to be rebuilt eventually anyway.

Wrong. Z-levels would come with significant balancing changes to match their implementation/make them relevant.
Like you said, tunnelers, fliers, towers, etc. Same would go for the unlimited mod that'd be bound to spring up almost instantly.
Modders would have to re-balance around it, and that'd fracture the community since it'd be such a basic 'must have' mod.

A few thing I observed:
They will hold onto good quality stuff. Like when they are wearing a masterful t-shirt, and you only have shoddy t-shirts in storage, the dude will wear the tattered masterwork t-shirt and keep on complaining.
They never take off gear you forced them to wear. I often forget that.
Despite being hot or cold they will equip power armor and military/kevlar/PA helmets, they seem to really like them even when they'd be more comfortable in toques/cowboy hats.
They will also wear armor vests regardless of the vest's durability, they usually wear them until the vest disintegrates.

Nudists can fuck off, though. I had a pyromaniac nudists, didn't end well.

Organ prices is the real cheating here. I use the same mod but i nerfed all the organs to about 200-300 silver. Huge mood penalties make sense when you can rake up to 4.5k from the one prisoner. But then keeping them alive to sell them to slavery for 600$ doesn't make sense when you can rip off their heart for 1.3k.

Defensive positions should be alternating walls/sandbags, place your colonists behind the walls and they will lean and shoot over the sandbags, giving them a pretty good chance to not get hit.

What if infestations weren't random bullshit that happened somewhere you had mined but instead bug nests existed deep in mountains and if you dug into them you'd ruin your day. This way you could make them much harder. Like a mountain base could end up having a tunnel that lead to a bug nest that you basically had to secure with turrets and fortifications because you didn't have the man power to deal with it when discovered.

-if there's heavy vegetation on the map and it isn't raining, you can use molotovs and incendiary launchers to manipulate the movement of raids with fire
-tamed and trained animals are great meat shields and they force ranged raiders into melee
-if you're turtleing inside, raiders will attack your coolers and vents because they represent the quickest way into your base. Wall them off.
-Leave multiple entrances to your base, if a trench-war kinda situation arises at one of your entrances, you can bring some troops around your base, exit via another entrance and attack the raiders in the back
-If you have to leave your base (siege, crashed ship part, infestation in some distant mountain) use stone chunks and trees to hide behind, also try to encircle the enemy.
-pairing melee and ranged fighters is a good idea and prevents you from losing valuable ranged colonists to personal shield-wearing ooga boogas
-If someone goes down undraft your shittiest soldier and use them to rescue the downed pawn ASAP. Stray bullets can hit downed people further decreasing their survival chance
-forbidding auto-fire on grenadiers and rocket launchers saves your pawns from friendly fire.

Yeah, just keep the walls thicker than the walls of the killboc and the raiders should always walk through the airlock.

If you strip mine or make caves in the mountains outside your base, there's a chance the infestation will spawn there instead.

Bugs also don't go a certain distance from their hives so if it's far enough away you don't have ot deal with it right away.

If you want to make a mountain base I suggest you make hallways at least 2 tiles wide so you can actually have 4 people shooting down a hallway against the horrible giant spiders.

If the infestations spawns in a room where you have a heater or air conditioner you can freeze/overheat them to death if you're lucky.

Still can't get that freaking kill box thanks to getting two raids per day. I am afraid to leave my own home to mine for resources. Alot of my colonist have lost a few limbs thanks to friendly fire when I got two raids that landed on my home. Also I thank for the mod expanded prosthetic and organ engineering, i'll tell you its a must have. Those bionics don't appear as much as you need them on vanilla.

Hey, you can make shortcuts through mountains with some of these.
Make the doors out of granite, toggle them open when you don't have a raid inc (they take forever to open/close otherwise, and you can just run a colonist through them all to close them when needed). Always trap the middle path (unlike shown here) & alternate which paths are trapped as enemies learn to avoid them.
Cutouts are for turrets, if you have the extra metal laying around.


Alternatively, replace most of it with a wooden corridor + an IED, since the doors cause them to cluster up.

What I meant is I build mortars as soon as I can. By the time the first proper siege rolls in, I have a simple and an incendiary mortar set up. The raiders take time to build their mortars and fortifications, if you start bombarding them immediately you might destroy resources or get a lucky hit on the shells they brought. They might never shoot that first shell.
Also I noticed they bombard your base only if you're turtling inside. If you send out a single dude high on yayo and make him run around the map the bastards aim at him.

The issue is that the AI will only target things in a region it can walk to, but any setup where an embrasure creates a closed-off area is considered a region the AI can't reach.

This is a non-issue in the vanilla game because there isn't anything that can be shot through, is impassable, and can create a new region. Medieval mod's embrasures work because they don't act as a wall.

This heats up the room, and can be compounded by the fire spreading to other batteries.
A fire in a small room packed with batteries can turn it into a 1000* crucible.

You don't need to spread them out much, but placing them in separate rooms & disconnecting the wires once they're charged will give you back-ups & mitigate damage from malfunctions.

Method A:
-Mine out a mountain pass or set up a wall supporting a roof leading to your killzone
-Wood preferable for said support
-Set up IED's around said support and pray that raiders set off IEDs
-IEDs blow up support which causes a roof collapse (assuming it's immediate), and hopefully kills off some raiders

Method B (with the use of the remote explosives mod):
-Same basic set up as method A, except that you have the ability to trigger the IED/TNT with a manual or remote detonator for perfect timing.

I could always test it out myself, and I might, but before anything I want to know how collapses work.

You also did the tranq gun, right? I'm not sure how you figured out the "damage" it did, but do you think you could put together a few "fatigue" damage based weapons? I'm thinking non-lethal, but whenever it hits, it causes pain in hopes of sending the enemy into shock and incapacitating them.

Some ideas that popped up into my head:
-blowpipe/blow darts for tribal themed colonies
-A gun that uses rubber bullets (old world riot shotgun?)

What I did was look at the coding for snake bites, malnutrition, and anesthesia then cobbled it all together, then tweaked the values and effects until I got what I wanted. Each bullet doesn't deal damage really, it inflicts .25 of the "tranquilizer" debuff. At each interval it lowers consciousness, then at .75 it sets max consciousness to 10%. Any shots after that will cause an overdose and kill the target - Which is something I'm considering taking out for balance reasons. One hand it makes people who just use tons of colonists with tranqs accidentally kill people - But on the other hand if you have enough colonists with tranq guns it would be an impenetrable wall. Four colonists could surround a thrumbo and shoot at the same time for an insta-kill. The tranq gun has the same stats accuracy wise as the minigun, but slow to aim and fire. I'm still trying to balance it out so it's not OP. I'm thinking of either increasing the number of shots it takes or reducing the accuracy/fire rate even more. I'm also considering making a tazer/stun gun as a melee weapon as well.
I would make other non-lethal weapons, but balance wise it's really hard to implement without making them useless or broken.

-space port with the ship and a communications room
-visitor barracks

-solar panels/wind turbines obviously
-outside greenhouses (useless since it's only 20days/year growing time in tundra but I want something that's round and looks nice)

Z-levels would be nice, the problem would be an exponential rise in the amount of cells being kept track of.

So if your map is 300x300, that's 90,000 tiles on the map grid. Add on one z-level, and that's 180,000 tiles. 5 z-levels (let's say, two up and two down from ground level) would mean a whopping 450,000 tiles on the grid map.

Considering the game stars to chug when you have more than 40 people on a 250x250 map, Z-levels would have a massive performance hit unless Tynan did some crazy good optimisations.

You can do that with timer switches, I guess. For -20 and a normal sunlamp sized building, two heaters oughta be enough, maybe one if you doublewall it. Still, if you care about your crops at all, put three in case of cold snap.

But why? Solar panels are weatherproof, you don't need to roof them. You can put walls around them for protection, though.

Just to make it more compact looking, I'm trying to do this whole "prefab buildings for a cold climate research station" thing aesthetically. I like the solar panel/other power source being on a separate slab though so I might leave it like this.

Also if I use wind turbine, it has to be a 1 square smaller greenhouse because the turbine has odd width and solar panel has even width ffs.

What's with the dumb powerline though? Also, you can rotate the turbine 90 degrees. You don't need to pave the area, just keep it clear of trees and other obstructions. Solar panels are low enough that they don't count, so you can put at least three in that area. 4 panels, 2 turbines oughta be enough for 3-4 greenhouses.

I had a cat colony join my settlement, with cute-sy names like Daylily, Lucy, and Dongolok, stuff like that, and they all got tanked at every opportunity. Before I realized that, they had drank all the beer in the place. I had had over 500 beers too, was going to sell it all to the tribals next door so they could get hammered and scream at the stars or do whatever it is at tribal parties that they do.

How the fuck those cats even got it all out of the damn bottles in the first place is beyond me. I sold them to the tribals instead of the beer, the little cheeky fucks were practically half beer themselves at a molecular level at that point anyway.

Fuck, I'm still mad about it. 500+ beers, 6 cats, 10 days. Jesus Christ.
