The two exile NPCs count as normal enemies. Summons can hurt them, as can invaders if seeded.

Horace was made specifically to be a pushover. He stops attacking if your health gets low to let you heal, but he does so little damage and makes so little effort to avoid getting hit that you should never have to worry about that.

Sulyvahn is unassociated with Londor. Sulyvahn was corrupted by the Profaned Flame and probably wants to end the Age of Fire because he sees the whole linking process as clinging to a rotting world - something he's been brought up not to do as a native of the Painted World. Sulyvahn doesn't seem fussy about how he ends the Age of Fire - killing the gods, the Profaned Flame, the Deep, whatever's good as long as it gets the job done. Sulyvahn isn't actually pro-Deep nor is he the originator of the Deep philosophy - that came from Aldrich and McDonnell, who are his lackeys but spent a good amount of time just doing their own thing in the Cathedral.

By the time Elfriede came to the painting she didn't really give a shit about the Age of Dark any more. She just wanted a new home, so it's unlikely that she'd have sent Sulyvahn out into the world as her agent.

Remember that Yuria apparently sees Sulyvahn as just another obstacle, because a Pale Shade can help you kill him. The Sable Church isn't just working towards an Age of Dark, it's working towards the usurpation of fire.

In Farron Keep, there is a ladder to the large bridge you used to get into Undead Settlement. Climb this ladder, activate the bonfire and hang out with the dog. After fulfilling your pupper-touching desires, look around the room a bit, and you'll be able to see a corpse hanging out of a ledge. There is an illusion hiding the entrance to that corpse on the other side of the wall. Walk around and hit it, you'll collect the Dream-chaser's ashes, which you can give to the Shrine Handmaiden, who will then sell you Titanite Shards for 800 souls each.

After defeating the first boss of Irithyll Valley, run around outside to the Archers and kept right. You'll eventually follow the sidewalk onto a ledge with the Easterner's Ashes. These unlock Large Titanite Shards at the Shrine Handmaiden.

In the secret level near the end past the last bonfire and a very difficult gauntlet of enemies that are weak to lightning, hang left and you'll run into some very tough lizards. Kill them or knock them off the cliff with a crossbow weapon art. Collect the Dragon-Chaser's ashes to unlock the remaining Titanite Materials.

WP beats everything that isn't a fast 1H weapon paired with a shield. You might as well treat it as a mechanical hard counter to any non-blocking action. It's hypothetically unbeatable against 2H weapons, though in practice this depends entirely on the WP-user's human error.

Carthus WAS the best non-WP weapon in the game. It lost to WP because everything loses to WP. Unlike WP, Carthus beats shields by doing insane stamina damage on top of being fast as easy to pressure with, and being straight better than any 1H weapon you could pair with a shield.

Other "good" weapons weren't relevant to this paradigm at all. Estoc is just a shittier 1H option than a SS. GS loses hard to WP. RHH loses hard to WP, etc.

The world is collapsing in on itself, both physically and chronologically. The kiln is the final moments, where the end of every kingdom to ever be and end is all together ending as one. It's an ambiguous pile of assorted ruined collected at random from every point in history and mashed together.

Everything is happening in different times, in separate histories, but everything begins with the fire, and so everything also ends with the fire. No matter where and when it was, it shares its last moments with the flame.

The name Dreg here is important since it seems to be tying the dregs that the Aldrich Faithful worship to this whole apocalyptic mythos.

Yeah one of the boss names translates to "Manus, Lord of the Deep," so assuming that Dreg Heap is the area's actual name then maybe we'll finally get the true answer about what the Deep is. Why does nobody have the same theory about Yorshka as me? Is it too obvious so they avoid it and look for other angles?

I believe Yorshka was Gwyndolin's and Priscilla's daughter, that Priscilla died at some point, and Gwyndolin raised her to believe Gwyn is her dad and Gwyndolin is her brother. I believe they were her parents because they were the only two godlike beings left in Anor Londo after the canon ending of ds1.

But all the theories I've heard are different and don't explain that grave with the corvian praying in front of it around the back of Yorshka's church. That has to be Priscilla's grave.

There was also that detail about Aldrich dreaming about a girl:

"Aldrich dreamt as he slowly devoured the God of the Darkmoon. In this dream, he perceived the form of a young, pale girl in hiding."

This could've been Gwyndolin's memories of Yorshka or also his memories of Priscilla.

Magic is easy mode. Especially if you have the oolacile catalyst. At 16 INT you can kill capra with 3 soul arrows. Crystal magic weapon on a bandit's knife is also fairly ridiculous.

Spears are the SAFEST way to play the game. Not easy, but you won't die either.

The dumb midgets guard the bell for centuries but they didn't realize that if they opened the door it's connected to, nobody would have any reason to bother their precious bell.

Oh, those guys. Yeah, first phase is easy once you get the invisible gimmick down. In the second phase Friede needs to be somewhat more protective of Ariandel. He dies really quick. Her stealth healing should begin the moment she starts. Now she has this big windup. Ariandel also needs some stagger/damage with his whole body. Third phase Friede is alright. Also the fight somewhat feels as it doesn't reward aggresive play, a lot of times it's best to just wait for a high recoverey move.

Here's the lowdown on power stance:

1. R1 -> L1 is an automatic 2 hit combo except for great weapons, with the exception of being able to pull off quick attacks.
2. Great weapon power stance has FAR higher poise damage
3. You get 2 running or rolling attacks.
4. If you hit triangle at the same time as L1/L2, you eliminate your startup frames and your hitbox comes out immediately (this is a quick attack).
5. Stamina damage is VERY high. (with ivory warrior ring you can shield break with a single L1 or L2)
6. The R1 and R2 moveset of the left arm weapon is overwritten, so high stat weapons with bad movesets become very viable. Same for weapons with good 1H movesets but bad 2H movesets.
7. The damage output seems to be ~70% of the damage of each weapon's normal R1 or R2 attack, combined. So both hits of an L1 does ~1.4x moveset modifier and both hits of an L2 does ~1.7x.
8. You can use a staff to buff your L-arm weapon and a resin to buff your R-arm weapon for dual buffs.
9. Each power stance attack hits twice as much as the normal R2s, so bleed/poison damage doubles.

Here's a few example PvP builds for power stance:

Straight sword + Greatsword (example: Sun Sword + Claymore, Blue Flame + Watcher GS)
Greatsword + Lost Sinner Sword (Example: Claymore + LSS)
Katana + Warped Sword (esp. for poison builds)
Twin daggers (esp. for poison builds)
Estoc/Rapier + Warped Sword
Straight sword +
Drakekeeper's greataxe + Greatsword
Majestic Greatsword + Straightsword
Estoc/Rapir + Mace
Spear + Any wide / 360 degree weapon

Easiest way to learn how to abuse the benefits of power stance is to use a thrusting straight sword (like Fume Sword or Sun Sword or Ashen Warrior Sword) with a greatsword. You get a thrust attack, a quick slash attack, a heavy slash attack, and a 360 degree bash all on one decent set of weapons.

In PvE, power stancing twin weapons and spamming L1s is still very viable. L1s take up more stamina and do about the same damage as a 2HR2, but you can do them much faster and in quick succession.

The most bullshit you'll fight in DS2 PvP is when someone rushes at you with a 2H katana or rapier and 2 hit stuns you every time you try to run/roll/attack, so every few seconds you keep being clipped and staggered, losing 25% of your health each time until you die.

In DS1, leveling up raises defense in all of your stats. Armor also had defense in most stats.

In DS2, physical and elemental defenses are completely different, so if you don't level up Int/Fth and don't equip elemental-specific equipment, you can have absolutely terrible elemental defense. 30% reduction vs 70% reduction if you equip anti-magic rings and armor.

Also, DS2 sorceries have worse tracking but fly much faster forward and take less time to cast than DS1, so you can spam them far more easily. There is also quite a lot more of them so they vary in their timing a lot more, and some equipment can cast multiple spell types too. It makes sorceries the masters of newbie entrapment since they can spam spells you've never seen before at a safe distance, while you have literally no elemental defense.

Iron Keep.

Both Alonne Knights and Smelter Demon become -way- easier with a shield. Especially the knights, since their katana attacks come out really fast and are hard to roll from. Same with the greatbows.

I would also include Earthen Peak, since the Manikins have the same problem, plus poison.

Shrine of winter, because of the constant barrage of soul arrows.

Dragon's Sanctum because of all the poison arrows, too.

Obviously you can go through those areas without a shield, but the shield makes such a huge difference that there's no reason (outside of a speedrun or personal challenge) not to use one.

DS1 had the anor londo snipers, painting guardians throwing knives, Gwyn, the blowdart soldiers in blighttown, and a few other points where shields dramatically helped.

Ingward is the only constant source of cheap transient curses which is a big deal to me because I like to use that fancy knife that the screaming ghost lady uses but it's a bitch to farm because I'm unlucky as hell, and part of being unlucky is seeing few (if any) TCs drop. My shit luck is why I'm uncomfortable offing merchants in general, if I can't buy something I likely won't see it. For instance, I didn't even know that the silver knights dropped their sword until late last year and even then it's not because I found one but because someone told me so and the wiki confirms it.

All that said, on my next playthrough I think I'll try killing Ingward to get the VLE early and see how that goes.

This shows all the poise damage levels. Basically, to trade with anything you need to use an great weapon, have 45-90+ poise, the opponent needs to be 1Hing their weapon, and you need to attack before they attack. Afterward, you have to let yourself become staggered in order to trade a second time.

Poise regenerates VERY slowly (2-3 minutes) or instantly after you are staggered.

An SL 26 with +4 weapons or under is low enough to be invaded in highwall and settlement (you can leave dancer and curse rotted greatwood alive), and can invade in the settlement up to the cathederal (being level 30 something offers minimal advantage since raw ass and prisoners chain are more beneficial on lower level characters). That gives you prehaps the most options. The higher levels up to 80 ish are good invasion levels.

I was told that playthrough doesn't matter, that even if you're on NG+++ or something, you can PVP with someone in NG or NG+ if you're the right SL and weapon level.

So at a certain point people should be in even the early areas at higher levels, since NG+ doesn't reset your level. If you finish the game at 100, you'll still be 100 in something like Road of Sacrifices.

Area shouldn't be relevant. Hell, SL shouldn't either, you'd think the majority of players wouldn't stop leveling at an arbitrary point like tryhards do.
It's baffling, really. It stands to reason that at SOME point there should be populations of SL100+ in any area of the game.

Fuck, I'm the opposite. I flex my gaming dick by soloing the game first, then using co-op to speed up the subsequent playthroughs.

What would've helped was not being told 120 is the best SL for multiplayer before leveling more. I was gonna go for 100% on this character and autists in /dsg/ just made it even harder for me to get Vertebrae Shackles and Concords.

I think the idea was that running and rolling attacks have "momentum" and can be predicted easier, so they should cause stagger.

1 is great for PvE, but terrible for PvP because it allowed other players to invade and just trade damage with you because they have havel's set and you don't have access to it yet.

DS2's system got fucked up a bit when they tried to balance it out for PvP and PvE at the same time and never quite fixed it, since poise mechanics work differently between the two (staggering enemies takes multiple hits but staggering players only takes one).

DS3 took DS2's system and started over from scratch with new values, and has been patched and tweaked a lot since.

I don't think it's a case of DS2's system being bad, but that From needed literally 3-4 years of pvp feedback and patches and fixes to come up with a decent system at all, so it took them until post-patch DS3 before they could make poise work fairly.

Patently untrue. A player with a HA can easily access enough poise to resist the 2HR1 of even another ultra. The only things that did ridiculous poise damage were running attacks, and you could still stack enough poise to HA through many of them.

The only outliers were curved swords, which for some reason did like 260 poise damage with their 2HWDR1, but they were an exception (and it was still possible to HA that much poise damage anyways).

Anor Londo being conquered by a simple halfbreed who overthrew Gwyndolin is an absolutely awesome concept, even more so with the fact he changed the climate so this place could resemble his homeland when he started getting homesick.
Smouldering Lake being Izalith that eventually found its way into the Ash Lake is absolutely organic and the only bad thing about that place is recycled chalice dungeon assets. Old Demon King is probably one of the saddest boss battles in the entirety of DS3, and also generally a solid boss.

He has multiple similarities with Friede, they seem to employ the same combat style and Sully is the only mage who is capable of creating frost weaponry shown in DS3. She was most likely his mentor for some time and he made a weapon for her.

I'm a little confused about the state of chaos in DaS3. In DaS1 I'm pretty sure I read/heard something that implied or stated that the chaos flame was eternal, although I can't find that item description or dialogue now. In DS3 the chaos flame is dying and now there's the profaned flame, which seems to be a different thing and is referred to by the immolation tinder's description as everlasting.

Am I misremembering that the chaos flame is supposed to be eternal and am I right that the profaned flame is not chaos?

DaS3 kind of has that, more than DaS2 at least, but the lack of interconnection between areas sucks, and the geography looks really retarded (yes yes the lands are converging I know, doesn't stop the game's geography from looking like ass): DaS1 is set on the side of a mountain, but DaS3 consists of a bunch of weird, stepped plateaus that stick out way above the rest of the flat looking landscape.

Alright, so the regular theory is that the Angels are an outside force that came to Lothric and appeared to Gertrude, right? And then the scholars of the Archives experimented on her, and even though the religion she started was considered heretical, Oceiros used that research to give Lothric angelic powers.

So the Follower Torch confirms that the Pus of Man is a form of the Abyss, aka humanity gone wild. And we know that humanity can run wild as a result of sorcery fucking with it, because that's what caused Manus. So, what if the Pus of Man in Lothric is caused by Oceiros experimenting on people and fucking around with his dragon research, which is why the Pus of Men look kind of dragon-y and why two wyverns are infected with it?

Now you're going to have to forgive me because I didn't save it, but I've seen a screenshot here which shows that, under their feathers, the Ascended Winged Knights wings are actually made of black goo: they appear to be a Pus of Man infection.

So, my theory is that the Angels weren't actually an outside force that came to Lothric, but rather something that Oceiros accidentally created during his experiments. Using that knowledge he managed to give Prince Lothric a unique brand of angelic sorcery (I always thought that Lothric's ranged attack looked exactly like a crystal soul spear, and we all know that crystal sorcery results from mad experiments and shit), in the hopes that it would make him a better candidate for linking the Fire. But, whatever the Angels that Oceiros created were, they escaped and appeared to Gertrude, who started a religion based on them. Given that Oceiros' experiments resulted in Pus of Man, the Angels might be tied to the Dark, which is why the religion is considered heretical.

The big hole in this is that Lothric's angelic sorceries are white and gold, whereas if the Angels were dark related they'd almost certainly be black, purple and/or blue: Dark Souls is pretty consistent about the colouration of its elements.

Like I said though, if our hopes do come true and the Ringed City has Angel stuff in it, I imagine this theory will be disproven.

Generally speaking yes. You can do stuff like infuse the MLGS with magic and then throw a buff on there as well. I think that there are things that can't be buffed/infused but nothing's coming to mind.

Sure, you can go all about how this or that weapon can actually have a shred of relevancy when overwhelmingly strong stuff exists, but we know it's not true. We're all just always using subpar things we pretend are better than they really are and try to win with them because we like them somehow, but nearly no one uses exclusively the good weapons.

Because infinite stamina doesnt exist, dont act as though its as simple as keeping my shield up, thats the only reason i lasted aslong as i did, one of those attacks blew all my stamina so the second hit connected, then it used it again which killed the stamina that had regened and then the second hit connected again and killed me.

Even counting BB, there are always plenty of bad weapons. I played DeS and still enjoyed bad weapons. Same for 1. Same for 2.. Same for 3.

It is true we hope this or that weapon will be great instead of awful, but this is the fourth game in the series where From shows weapon balance is not their fucking concern. There are games out there where devs actively try their best to make everything good and usable, but this is not a priority for From, their priorities are the things they always make in the series such as the way they develop enviromnents, enemy encounters or multiplayer interactions and specific parts about those.

Complaining about weapon balance, which is an actual problem for us, but not From, is just showing you don't get what Souls games and From's games are about.

Dark Souls 2 is easily my least favourite of the series and I fucking hated it on my first, and only, attempt to play it. The game also gives you a lot of tools to deal with these situations like bombs, alluring skulls, resins and so on. Pretty fun to prepare and use tactics with these things. Dark souls 3 did this even better(better item placements and more effective items). Dark souls 2 alluring skulls had some problems with alluring skulls. Who it affected was very arbitrary and it had shit range and duration IIRC. A small thing I guess.
