Repost. By nature, grids are constrictive so the more basic a grid's shape is the more it serves its purpose. for example, every shaped grid over squares is going to lose out on the benefits of the strategies of a grid based game.

I think the best length should be on average somewhere between 15 and 30 hours. Most RPG's I've played that are longer than that just feel dragged out.

It's the second time I make one, it's releasing tomorrow. It's different from an usual server, though. Players start at max level, get equipment and levels for free, including consumables and supplies. Then they can engage in small scale PvP within a number of pre-determined war-zones, or play one of our modifier game-modes.

The central idea is to completely drop time wasting and solo content in favor of game modes in which you have to directly compete for everything.

I love MMOs and I love grinding, but sometimes you want to scratch that RO itch but you don't want to grind for a week to get to the fun part.
>>
>>167127025
Sure, you can occupy crucial squares, similar to chess. You can block very easily with squares as in placing game pieces in the way of the line of fire or pinning opponents against a wall or surrounding. I know you can do all this with other grids, but when was the last time you were blocked in on a hex based grid? or the amount of extra routes you can take on a path without being intercepted?

I've never played HoMM, but I'll check it out. Which ones use hex grids?

Each planet generates a heightmap using perlin noise and uses this heightmap to create a texture for itself. For whatever reason, though, the texture only applies to certain instances, despite the fact that all instances are using the exact same code. 3D is incredibly frustrating.

It's good for understanding what's going on behind the hood of not just unity, but 3d structures in general. I had no clue what meshes were, how unity renders a 3d object, etc. I'm glad I've gone through a lot of these. I'm trying to create a hex grid for my game and it's not particularly useful in that regard -- even the hex grid tutorial on the site isn't what I'm specifically looking for -- but as a general repository of knowledge it's very good, and it does a good job of directing me to resources and ways of thinking I didn't know I had to know, especially with regards to optimization.

I still don't know what the best way to make an interactive hex grid would be. Something tells me that making every tile a blender mesh gameobject would be incredibly bad, but...

It can help, yes. I really recommend Khan Academy. It also helped me that I picked specific subjects. Like I understood that I really need to get my head around trigonometry, so I've jumped into that, and then into vectors. The exercises are very good and the instructor is easy to follow.

You got me on the art part tough. That shit is black magic. I guess it would be doable, but from ground zero, I should completely give up on everything else for years to have enough time to practice. And that's a pretty big gambling there, since there's a chance that you've just wasted years on nothing.

Well I have a cube(cube1) that gets the position of my main character every frame, and I set those coordinates onto that same cube1 every frame, so it tracks it perfectly (only position, not rotation). I then have the camera follow cube1. I then place a cube(cube2) infront of the main player a few feet, and attach it as a child to the main character. Then I make it so when you press the middle mouse, cube1 "looks towards" cube 2. Because cube1 is now rotating, the camera rotates at the same time, until the camera is now effectively looking at cube2, which is always infront of the player.

I'm terrible at explaining things but I hope that helps.

I had the exact same problem.

What I did was I laid out all my previous project infront of me (in my head anyway, prob easier if you do it on paper), and took a good hard look at each one, and tried to think if there was some way I could make it work. Maybe if I change this, or change that. Cut this, expand this, etc. etc. I did that and it worked, I made and published a game in the end, finally. I mean, it was barely downloaded so it was an absolute failure...but it got good reviews( 2/2 5 stars)

I find it's a lot more easier to work with a past idea than to try to come up with something completely new. And I doubt all your idea's were shit. Theres probably a gem in there waiting to be uncovered.

Somehow progress for my comfy game jam.

First: the game project started (yay), it'll be a point and click game about an haunted house!

"But, how is that gonna be comfy?"
It's gonna be comfy because haunted doesn't mean scary, so cute ghost, "cute" ugly and old house, and cookies!

Second: the main gameplay is basically done (more or less). Basically, I can click on object, make them interact with the girl easily, and the girl won't go to something she can't easily reach (basically where she can't see).

"But that's sexist! You call a girl by snapping fingers!"
Yes.
Not only it is sexist, but also I wanted at first to put sex scenes in it (which I can't for the jam). And I assume, because that's how this game is supposed to be.

Third: the graphism are... Started. Well only the girl took me two full days...
That's basically gonna be the hard part. And not only it's gonna be hard, but I also have a ton of work to do that's not this jam...
But I'll do my best!

"But! That's ugly!"
You too, anon, you too.

Good luck to everyone doing the jam, and have fun!

100s a month is what good games with no marketing get nowadays. There's so much crap up there it's impossible to survive without spending money on marketing.
Plus, every game out there that is decent enough gets cloned overnight by chinese shitters, they even copy the name of the game to catch confused users. Even seen people complaining about their games being downloaded, decompiled, rebuilt in the exact same way (code and assets) and published under a different package name.

I talked to a guy who had released a mobile game last year, it was a strategy game with amazing graphics and pretty good gameplay. They didn't spend enough on marketing and the game was stuck under a piles of shitty games that were older so it failed. He told me he was taking a sabbatical because it gets so depressing when that happens that there's no way to continue devving.

Mobile game development after 2013 is just for companies with decent budgets. Sure, you might get lucky and release a hit, but chances of that happening are about the same as winning the lottery, and you don't have to put any effort on the lottery so you might as well just do that.

Until properly curated marketplaces show up on mobile it will continue to be a sea of urine and shit for indie devs.

IT failed. Thats pretty normal with any kind of failure where you put lots of efforts into something and it fails. But in game dev this is multiplied by the fact that the effort placed into a thing is MASSIVE often months if not years of ¨full time work in cases
I agree with most points you said, but the chances are much higher than winning the lottery to be honest. Yes even a good game can fail but your chances aren't one in a billion, it's like one in a thousand (this number is pretty hard to get correct), even with marketing the success isn't guaranteed. So it's mostly down to luck in the end. You can affect luck alot by making a quality product and by some shilling too, but a big part of it is still just a luck nonetheless.

I see people being taught to use lerp like this all the time when it's not at all what the function's meant for
It achieves an effect like a really slow ease out (used in some camera styles a lot), but technically the variable never actually reaches its destination since you're always setting it to a fraction in between the current position and the goal position

In a vast majority of cases it's a lot neater to keep a timer and use lerp properly to linearly interpolate between two values. You can even use sin or cos for easing in/out/both while still maintaining an absolute duration for the transition between two values

>>
>>167148519
>games are easier to make..
this is factually wrong so i'm only gonna give you a (You) concerning the difficulty of publishing games and books.

publishing a book has been difficult in the past, true. these days however, it's as easy as sending a draft to china and waiting a couple weeks -> https://www.alibaba.com/showroom/book-printing.html . with the exception of money, there really are no hurdles between you and writing a book. now obviously, this is concerning hard copies only. if we're talking ebooks, it's about as difficult as selling a video game on itchiio. i.e it isn't.

publishing a game is really easy using sites like itchio. however, there are still considerable hurdles between you and big stores like PSN, xbox live and steam. and by that, i don't just mean passing cert and acquiring greenlight votes, which actually isn't as easy as people think, i mean rewriting your game so that it is compatible with these platforms. that's not a trivial task by any stretch of the imagination.

tl;dr

games are much. much harder to publish than books.

Technically I am... but I didn't play Kings Field as a child. Neither did I play Dark Messiah as a child.
Audience will be in that position though.

Only thing I played as a teenager was Arx Fatalis. Though I never played that further than right after the goblin kingdom (which is a pity cause I actually think it's a great game - I actually restarted it recently and stopped at exactly the same point. I even played more Ultima Underworld by now and I only started that somewhen last year.)

Also no, don't expect it to sell very well unless it actually manages to ride some sort of DM nostalgia hype train, but that will probably only result in disappointment. Another possibility is of course to market it as some sort of "Woooahhh it's first person dark souls", which is where King's Field kinda comes from (it isn't really but kinda), but marketing your stuff with Dark Souls by now leaves a sour aftertaste for most people.

Oh and then there is Underworld Ascendant, which will probably steamroll over my project.

Welp... I guess if KF could survive next to UU I gotta take the same position.

I used to think procedural generation was a meme, but now after going through the hell that is content creation I understand why indie devs do it, this shit is so hard and time-consuming as a 1MA. Every 1 hour of work you put in content doesn't translate to even 10 minutes of gameplay, which is why so many games with static content are so short despite the devs having worked on them for years. Now I've seen the light, proc gen is the only way for 1MAs.

Hey good idea!, although I might use that trait for a zombie-type scrapyard bot instead.

I'm thinking those big sword bots can be behind doors, because there will be a shout mechanic where you can utter a sound and nearby friendly bots can potentially open inaccessible doors/switches. However if one of those big guys is nearby, he will hear the sound and start walking slowly towards the player, even from afar, Jason Vorhees/It Follows style.

Waaay down the line of course, but one can dream.

Here's an idea for that zombie bot I mentioned though.

Hey /agdg/ I imagine this gets asked a lot but I'm taking the heat of asking it anyway.

What's a good engine that's simple too learn and not too ambitious? I really just want to get my feet wet in this whole dev business and make an innocent little sidescroller just to learn the ropes.

Unity seems to have too much shit and it gets overwhelming, I really just want something simple that's not overly ambitious that let's a mostly artist like me that knows a little bit of basic programming to be able to shit out a shitty 2D sidescroller just to start out.

Again, sorry if it gets asked a lot, I already checked out the ones posted in the OP but I don't know which one suits best my needs.

----[ Recap Complete ]----
A quick heads up: there were a total of 6 games this week that used titles different than what they're registered under without using the NEW_TITLE field. Even if you don't care about your score, it would make my job easier if I didn't have to manually correct them. It would also allow the completed recap to be posted sooner.

I strongly recommend keeping a .txt file somewhere with a pre-filled recap form containing all your game and dev information, so each week you just change the progress and then copy-paste it here.

-------- SCORES
In its current state this exceeds the character limit, so visit the pastebin for now

IMPORTANT (!)
Your score info is tied to an identifier, your case-sensitive game name. If you misspell or otherwise type it incorrectly, it will be treated as a new game, and your actual game's streak and multiplier will be reset. If you want to change your game's title safely, use the NEW_TITLE field. Example:

----[ Recap ]----
Game: OldTitle
NEW_TITLE: NewTitle
(rest of your recap entry)

Amazing idea! Done.
Also the color scheme is deliberate.

Red > Energy
Blue > Matter
Purple > Dark(evil)?
Yellow > Light(divine)?

just make it bend space-time instead of being a visible projectile
in other words, cause a lensing effect like in the following vid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDD4PVmj53U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_9nBPNB-JI

and make the projectile yank enemies towards it within a certain distance, but to stay true to dark matter properties by making it so that this projectile will be able to pass through enemies and walls and would eventually fall into the floor towards the core of the planet.

All damage would be done through gravitational effect only. Those from whom the projectile passes by close, will be yanked at the projectile's direction. Those who actually get hit by that projectile would suffer light damage, since that projectile would pass right though and the only damage would come from the flesh at millimeter distance from the projectile being sucked into that projectile. In other word, it goes through the target like a needle and cannot be blocked by armor.

What I essentialy described is a dark matter micro black hole.
>>
>>167163263
Sounds almost exactly like what I have planned for the Alt Fire, as you can see under Singularity.

It'll float forwards and pretty much do what you said except way stronger. Identical to the Mass Effect biotic power of the same name I'd say.

The Concussive Orb is going to be a lobbed "grenade launcher" style projectile that bursts and creates a small field of antigravity where it lands, temporarily stunning enemies and making them susceptible to being pushed over pitfalls with gunfire.

It's kind of OP but it's the last weapon you get.

Red light has actually the lowest energy of the visible spectrum. Blue light actually has a the shortest wavelength, giving it the highest energy per length of radiation.
So I think Blue > Energy

Matter has no associated colour so the ammo type should be a magazine of bolts.

Purple is not dark. Dark is the absence of light, making it pure black. When you see a black hole, it's not actually a hole, but a region of space where light cannot reach your eyes. There IS light in a black hole, but the light itself does not have enough speed and energy to overcome the black holes gravitation pull.
Black holes can form accretion disks where the matter being pulled are going so fast that the heat up and glow.
So, Dark > black and glowing reds, yellows and whites. You could have a blue and purple accretion disk, but it doesn't really convey the feeling of heat like red, yellow and white does. Your choice though.

Unfortunately I can't do much against impostors unless I decide to use tripcode authentication, which I want to avoid. If it becomes an issue to the point where I have to manually remove impostor entries each week, I'll probably do that. For duplicate names, all I currently do is check if the dev is different. I'm probably going to make people choose a case-sensitive dev identifier as well (with an accompanying NEW_DEV_NAME field) to make that more robust.
>>167162192
Sure, I can look into that. I'll just need to make sure people don't see it as an alternative to posting in the thread unless it's absolutely necessary like in your case, because one of the points of the recap is to encourage more progress posts.

Gamma rays are invisible to every animal on the planet, but I guess since you are doing robots, that shouldn't be a problem.
Gamma rays behave in EXACTLY the same way as visible light (i.e. your mining laser) except for the fact that it has a ridiculously small wavelength, giving it immense energy.
The gamma weapon should be used for ionizing your enemies (stripping electrons from their atoms, turning them into ions)
You could have it that the gamma ray makes the robots electrically explode from unstable atoms, but it would behave like the laser.

Oh don't get me wrong. I'm no expert but I've always been fascinated by this stuff so I already know the actual physics behind all that. I am definitely taking a "vidya logic" route with the visuals, and there might even be completely fantastical stuff like magic or whatnot, like in Jak & Daxter's setting.

I really want there to be like 4 or 5 different "elements", even nonsensical ones like "matter" or "dark", so I can build the game's levels around unlocking each one.

The Gamma Ray gun will be functionally a "flamethrower", doing like you said, making enemies start fizzling, malfunctioning, and eventually bursting.
"Gamma Burst" will be a high intensity beam of the stuff, capable of penetration and MUCH higher damage.

I want a minimal HUD so color-coding ammo units and weapon selection with a small glow is important.

UE4 blueprint if your computer has the resources to run it is a nice visual approach to understanding imperative programming. Definite recommend.

Gamemaker is decent too for 2d stuff if you're new to game programming.

Personally I find the unity interface to be sort of a clusterfuck, but other people seem to like it.

I played a bit with love2d and it was okay but felt really limited, and lua as a language really felt like a barrier to designing things the way I would like to.

And, I am not saying this ironically at all.... Javascript for browser games is fine. The JS community is massive, so you'll never be short of resources.

Usually when your followers start to ask you if there's a way to support to work, then that moment should be the indication that you are ready for one. Note that even guys with +100k or even millions of views on YouTube barely gets enough money which would be enough for a month of living (or at least where I live). They're huge in comparison to the width of the head. Anime faces have a widened forehead to accommodate the large eyes. Western style uses relatively realistic proportions and thus the eyes must be smaller.

If Disney can't be used as a measure for what can be called western style then something is definitely wrong here. It doesn't matter if anime was inspired by it, what matters is that his character still falls within what can be considered western art. (not like it actually matters either way)

This. "Disney Eyes" or "Pixar Eyes" is definitely it's own branch within western comics/animation style.

Most recognized by distinct eye sockets, compared to eastern eyes which almost always has a simplified/stylized outline.

Hi, the image is too big to read on a 1080p monitor without opening it in a new tab and awkward scrolling. Maybe try resampling it down to a more sane resolution, maybe with 6 games per row instead of 7 to keep the text legible.

Also you could put the scores in the image somehow I imagine.

Just some thoughts.

Arguing semantics of art is pointless. What is not pointless is the fact that that anon's eyes are disproportionally large compared to the forehead.

If you want larger eyes, you need a larger forehead. That is universal.

so I started coding my rpg game in Unity because I'm familiar with C#, and now I've realized that I want to make it 2D instead of 3D

my first inclination was to just use RPG Maker but I really don't want to use Ruby

so is Unity that bad for pixel-art-based 2D or is it just a meme? is it worth it to switch engines and recode it all? if so, what engine?

Listen up, because I'm going to give you the best advice you've ever heard.

Use references. No, it's not cheating. Everyone who has ever been good at art has copied or used references, whether it be from real life or another artist.
I've seen several examples of people that never use reference, never try to learn, and continue making garbage of the same quality for years. Then there are those that study the human form, anatomy, gesture, color, composition, etc who see huge gains in less than a year.
Getting good at art isn't like grinding in a videogame; you can't just dump hours into doodling and become a master. You need to study and apply yourself.
