The mistake here is that people actually refer to Bard and Machinist as "Support" as though that's what their archetype is, rather than calling them Ranged or Shooter DPS.

There is no Support role in this game, varying utility is distributed amongst the jobs we have.

At best the only thing unique Bards and Machinists bring to the table is Mage's Ballad, Army's Paeon, and Promotion. And even then, Goad from Ninja acts as single target TP regeneration for a party member, and I'd bet money Red Mage gets some manner of party or targeted MP Refresh.

Summoner or Machinist?

I want WAR to stay how they are, they are absolutely perfect right now.

I want DRK to be able to benefit from MP regenerating party abilities like Ewer and Mage's Ballad.

But most of all I want PLD to have more party utility and defense with a DAMN SHIELD. I want PARRY to not be a garbage useless stat that gets fucking shoved into every high end gear. I want the three execs who looked at SWORD OATH and thought it was a good idea to just be slapped. I want to play a holy goddamn warrior of light, not a gladiator with a heal button that does everything worse than the "off tanks". Royal Authority was another insult on top of Sword Oath for a level 60 "ya dunnit congrats" skill. I want COVER to actually be useful, ever, anywhere. I want FLASH to just go away forever, i'm moderately upset that every other tank can crossclass FLASH and PROVOKE but PLD can't even get OVERPOWER, which by the way does way more aggro than Flash.

I'll just stick to playing WAR, might cap off DRK sometime soon but as it is I haven't touched PLD in a month.

Determination is possibly the stupidest stat I have ever seen in a fucking MMO.

Bring back effects that actually mean shit, like "Enhances Embrace". This tier's otherwise better SCH robe doesn't have it and you want it? Apply a Materia with that effect to it.

That is to say, I think Materia needs to get cracked again to make room for better effects too. As it stands, it's a fucking insult to the system it takes its name from. Possibly the worst socketing system I've ever experienced, outside of games where your equipment explodes if you fail. While we're never going to get Materia on the level of Final Fantasy VII (since in that game it was the core system for building your characters), a shift to Materia effects being mini traits would be a giant step up from Battledance Materia VI giving us 24 ambiguous points of Parry that don't matter.

Itemization is definitely one of the worst parts of the game. As far as I can tell, it's designed to be so idiot-proof that someone who has never played a video game before can start their free trial and be able to determine appropriate ideal end game gear sets within five minutes.

The fact that Determination is the "you are better at doing everything" stat is silly.

Crit and Skill/Spell Speed being abstracted is fine, especially since the actual percentages involved are tiny. 600 skill speed puts you at a GCD of 2.4, which is only 96% of 2.5.

Base stats like DET and SS going up every level, however, are extremely silly, since they don't actually do anything. The 354 Skill Speed you have at level 60 while naked is completely subtracted out of the GCD calculation. It's way more base SS than you had at level 50, but it does just as much as what you had then: nothing. It's pure number wank.

I understand they're trying to avoid situations where a certain item provides such a useful bonus to a skill that it takes priority over much higher level items. FFXI was really terrible about that because of the way stat scaling worked there. But they've reduced it so far that nothing besides pure item level really matters. (Side note here: I was comparing various combinations of relic stats and materia melds to produce a "better-than-BiS" set of Dragoon gear, since DRG gear is a bit more complicated than everyone else's due to needing precisely 600 SS, and the total stat weight difference between the best and worst combinations I found was approximately 0.5%. So truly ideal gear compared to a mishmash of 270 produces very little tangible advantage. Also, strangely, a relic statted for ACC/CRIT beat out an Alexandrian Spear, despite being 5 ilvls lower.)

tl;dr: Gear is an illusion of choice. And that's disappointing.

Illusion of choice is a recurring theme in this game, actually. Those bonus stat points you get for leveling are another example. There's only one "correct" place to put them. As a Dragoon, for example, DEX, INT, MND, and PIE have no effect on anything I do. I could put those points in VIT, but that won't save me from anything that's actually designed to kill me, so that leaves STR, which coincidentally, is the only stat that powers all of the buttons I push.

Cross-class skills are another illusion of choice. Of the five slots you have, there are two or three that are mandatory for you to do your job correctly, plus another two or three that don't do anything, but are technically better than having empty slots on your hotbar. Either you have no choice, or your choice doesn't matter. They said this system is getting overhauled in 4.0, but I doubt it will actually change anything.

This part is so they can inflate the actual stat you gain from an armor piece without actually breaking it. The higher base at 60 means per point crit/ss/det are worth less than they were at 50, but since you get more of it, you dont see people running around with 40% crit rate. It's why secondaries are so weak at the start of a patch.

Third and final part of this rant.

Duty Finder is single biggest hindrance to the game's development, and not because it's full of idiot dragoons who don't know what Heavy Thrust is.

In concept, a cross-world party matching system sounds great: people aren't limited to their own server populations for day-to-day playing, so you mitigate the effect of "magnet" servers like what we've seen with Gilgamesh.

But here's the rub: all facets of gameplay have to cater to the limitations of Duty Finder. A fourth job role (say, support) can't exist without a total overhaul of the DF system. So every job in the game, and those that might be added in the future, has to be pigeon-holed into the existing trinity. And since the whole system is predicated on the four/eight man party setups, there's no wiggle room. We can't suddenly add a fifth person to the dungeon without redesigning absolutely everything. Not to mention boss mechanics targeting people based on role needing to be completely redone.

Also, when we have groups forced into the same predesignated role makeups, we severely limit what sort of content we can create. There can never be a dungeon boss that requires two tanks or two healers, for example. This completely stifles creativity on the part of content designers who now have to work within a very narrow framework of options.

Last point to bring this all around: there is no such thing as player agency in this game. Nothing the player does or doesn't do matters. The minor dialogue options you get in cutscenes have no impact on anything. The WoL is essentially a living god at this point, but unable to accomplish anything without Cid, Y'shtola, or Alphinaud presenting him with the deus ex machina du jour. Likewise, despite single-handedly toppling a dozen actual living gods, if surrounded by a few peons from the Brass Blades, it's time to surrender. Likewise, major, world-shattering plot lines like Alexander and Warring Triad happen entirely in a vacuum.
