Because it's tedious and just begs for automation of some kind. And it's standard for almost all 2d games with tilemaps, especially with procedurally generated maps.

>>
>>166721321
Actually, I was serious. You can find variations of this algorithm using similar diagrams in like every book about graphics programming which was published the last decades. Marching squares is so ancient, I assumed it's common knowledge. Especially here where a lot of people work on retro 2D stuff.

Apologies if it was too vague.

I need some help understanding meshes in Voxel engines (especially the Minecraft kind).

Let's say I have a Minecraft-like voxel engine with textures, like picrelated. A big part of optimization is reducing draw calls (i.e. drawing only what is visible to the player). So the way I understand it, is that instead of drawing full cubes you draw squares, which will form a mesh of all the visible sides of cubes.

Look at the tree trunks in the picrelated. Those aren't squares, those are rectangles that have a repeated texture.

Am I missing something, or were those drawn in a single draw call that will also put multiples of that texture?

>>
>>166721643
Don't put too much thought into the tree trunks, those are a very specific optimization. It's far more important to -generally- avoid drawing anything invisible. So first of all you obviously don't draw anything which is not inside the field of view (i.e. objects behind your back), then you don't draw polygons where the face normal is not pointing towards the camera (backsides of the cubes), then you sort your shit by distance and don't draw stuff in the background where you already drew opaque stuff in the foreground. With block worlds like minecraft you can kinda calculate "when I have drawn a cube here right in front of me, I don't need to draw any cubes in the background which are concealed by it" (and since everything is a cube, you can use relatively simple math for that projection) and so on.
>>
>>166721436
As much as I like proper first person, with full model, animation, it's really hard and there's a reason that most people use a FPS model to do them.
>>

>>166721960
Yeah, those are obvious and I'll do them since they're not too hard to figure out. I just didn't know how can greedy meshing with textures be done. The link above says it's possible, so I'll look into it if I ever struggle with performance.

Here's one approach that only cares about it's own tile type and not what it's bordering. You could maybe combine this with the rings method to get a nice amount of variation.

Is it acceptable to ask about modding?

I'm planning to do a campaign for one of the NWN games, for which I'll have to add/remove races, classes, gods, tinker with spells (new spells, changing costs) and generally mess around with that sort of thing to fit my setting. I'm planning on using only base game and expansion assets and I don't care about the graphics.

Having only played the games through lended copies ages ago, I'll have to buy either of them.

Which game is better to work with? It can be of ease of use of the toolkit, for reasons related to the base game (I remember NWN2's clunky controls and people seem to prefer NWN's UI) or whatever. Keep in mind that I'm a first-timer when it comes to modding and scripting in general.

I've never used a coroutine in Unity. What sort of situations do you actually need them in? Would it have made my turn-based game easier to make?
>>
Coroutines are a meme and should only be used in loading
>>
>>166723915
yes
>>
>>166723915
I don't think there's a situation that needs a coroutine. It might've saved you some code somewhere but Unity in general isn't well suited out of the box for turn based games so you always have to code a lot of shit for that to work.
>>
>>166723792
Modding isn't gamedev and unless someone has personally modded NWN they probably can't help you. Google can.

>>166723889

If you're doing any kind of "real game" in unity you should be writing your own engine to handle the general update cycle using regular C# classes instead of attaching monobehaviors to shit and letting go of any control of the order things are executed

What would be a good way to make hacking in a game both fun and at least somewhat based in realism?
I want to create a game where "hacking" is part of the level progression but I'm trying to avoid minigamey type stuff like Fallout3+ or worse, Bioshock
>>
>>166724185
>Unity in general isn't well suited out of the box for turn based games
How is it not well suited? It has everything you'd ever need for a turn-based game.
>>
>>166723915
I only use coroutine when I need to have some code in the same method execute at different times.

Say, for example you're generating a 9000x9000 grid of something complex. You can do this in a single for, but chances are if you do it in a single frame you're going to have a hell of a fps drop.
You can "try" to work your code around by adding some temporary variable keeping track of which object you're generating etc. but that's additional work.
With a coroutine you still use a single for but it allows you to put a yield in between and you're done :
- for (x,y)
- do your stuff
- yield, wait for x number of frames or t time
- endfor
And you're done. No shaddy temporary variable or anything here.
>>
>>166724443
except for any kind of way to make turns, yeah
>>
>>166724272
It really depends on what you're making.

A lot of games can be made with MonoBehaviours and as long as you're not full retarded about it they can even be fairly nicely structured.

Writing it all yourself will probably get you some performance though. Assuming you're good enough to write it well.
>>
>>166724443
This >>166724510

Any real time game doesn't really need a new major system to be implemented before you can start developing/prototyping it on Unity.
>>
>>166724510
You know you ACTUALLY have to code to make games, right? It isn't just supposed to be 'Oh, I'll just load the Turn-based Mechanics asset'.
And turn-based games is child's play anyway if you know state-machines

>>
>>166724272
Except you can control the order in Unity.
>>
>>166724642
the whole point of using an engine is so you can just focus on content and game logic

you have to build a turn based engine on top of unity to start, that's not "everything you need"
>>

You don't necessarily have to use Update with any MonoBehaviours, you can do it the old way and have a script managing the updates of every objects.

Furthering that idea I think after the games opening cut-scene the opening level will be saving this cat, and then the both of you travel through the game together. (He shows up on the stages from time to time to give dialogue but is always on the level selection map following you).

I'm considering making it so after every world (8 total) you save a new npc with their own character that will follow you on your quest to get home.

Kinda like the animal buddies or something from kirby/ his friends. I would just need to figure out 7 other animals that make sense to fit into cubes.

So I've been reading up on east european mythology to make enemy encounters in my game. (So I can divert from standard Tolkien stuff.)

And I came across several different versions of Nymphs, the ones in particular that caught my eyes are Samodiva and Iele.

Similarities between them are that they're both ethereal women with incredible seductive powers found at midnight dancing.
Some differences are that Samodiva has blonde hair and invites men to dance with them to exhaustion and death, while Iele have bells attached to their feet and they only turn aggressive if you refuse their invitation to dance (and won't kill you if you do). Iele are also found in groups of either 3 or 7.

Now my point is, would it be unfair to the player if the game has encounters with both of these, and he'll have to pick up on the differences and whether he has to refuse the dance or not solely through tidbits of lore gained from libraries or taverns?
Would you be frustrated if you chose to dance one time and got away with it, and in another playthrough (or in the same playthrough) met again some dancing ladies, chose to dance and got a game over instead?

game over is a bit needlessly harsh. If you can instead make it a hard but doable fight then you can avoid wasting a player's time.

You should also signal in some way that the player failed an IRL perception check when they do. Maybe by giving them unique names or making the distinguishing features more prominent during a fight or w/e. That way, people who prefer to learn from experience are given a proper pathway for that (fuck up once -> realize why they attacked -> don't fuck up again)

I was thinking of that, but the player had options like
-Run away on sighting them (which avoids the battle)
-Attack them (battle)
-Choose to dance (game over)

And making the last two options to the same thing seems kinda redundant. Then again it just came to me that I could make them battle except heavily debuffed after they realize they've been dancing for hours, thanks anon.

So what? Do it anyways.

If I had to take out every detail that has been done in the past I wouldn't have a game.

Just because another thing has done it in the past doesn't mean you can't put your own twist or vision into it.

Look at >>166734026 - if you were him you could say "oh man I can't continue because dark souls" or "oh man I can't continue because salt and sanctuary" but even though it may look similar in the surface you can take a good look at it and know that it's completely different, because even though the elements are similar, the vision is different, and that sets it apart from the source of inspiration he might've had.

My friends and esteemed colleagues,

My main event loop has a pretty involved hover system with a bunch of draws and forces being applied.

I'm revamping its functionality and refactoring and I'd like to know, would it help significantly to add up all these forces into one vector and then just apply it all at once when all the hover components have been polled? As it is, I'm just adding it with every single one.

>>
>>166739535
So? Just because you can make a turn-based game in Unity doesn't mean it's going to be a smooth task. Unity is designed around updating state continuously each tick. When your logical game ticks don't correspond to update/render ticks, it becomes much more difficult.

Even Unity's coroutines aren't going to help much since it's the engine itself that runs them. You have to reimplement coroutines using a state machine (at least you can still use C# generators for yielding) yourself that then runs on top of what Unity exposes to you, and you have to get all your game logic to work with that state machine. That's not straightforward when Unity itself handles game objects and components - you have to essentially forget about using that and roll your own game object system.

Working on a game engine that uses javafx for the GUI and in preliminary attempts at mapping WASD to movement I'm running into an issue. I cant (or at least couldnt find a way to) take multiple key inputs at the same time beyond standardly used modifiers such as CTRL/Shift, which means of course you cant move diagonally. I got around this by using booleans that are True while a key is pressed and turn false when a key is released, but this might be making my Application or Animation thread crash. Anyone know a better work around or bit of the API I might have missed, or am I stuck using booleans and have to work around whatever is causing it to crash with it instead?

If you really want to use Java and not use a game engine, you should use LibGDX. A desktop GUI application framework is really unsuitable for a game.

My bet is that your multithreading is the source of the bug but you don't need more than one thread to make a game (besides optimization purposes, but most games won't benefit) if you use the proper tech.

done completely in pretty much only SFML, writing everything on my own. pretty basic right now, only have movement, basic weapon mechanics, hud, and a basic enemy done right now. that's the most core though, now I'm able to build off to make more specific stuff like enemy types. still need to implement a menu and level mechanics to complete my core game

hard to pitch my game atm since it is in its basic stages, but that's what I get for writing most things from scratch.

planning to go through greenlight release and everything (and I'm definitely not an artist by any means) so I'll need an artist that willing to split profits sometime in the near future

I don't recommend JavaFX OVER libGDX, my point was that it works and that OP must be doing something wrong. It's completely possible to parse multiple keys per tick, and it's easy to implement the typical game loop. If he's already using JavaFX for GUI anyways he won't have to learn a whole new API.

Don't worry, JavaFX is workable enough. The downside, compared to a "real" game framework, is that you're going to have to implement various stuff yourself which is usually conveniently handled/wrapped by game oriented frameworks. Like dunno spritesheets/texture atlases, animations, physics and so on. But if you want to go into "professional" java programming it's a good idea to get acquainted with JavaFX because eventually it's going to become part of the OCP/OCA certifications (currently you don't need it yet, the tests are still targetting Java 7 and AWT/SWING).

And good luck, I'd suggest starting with a very basic project where you can simply move a sprite with cursor keys or WASDF, without any complications like multithreading, and once that part is running ok you can import it into your main project.

Not posting your fucking art in the first place idiot. You're offering yourself as an artist, in your very first post offering that, you need to have a link to your portfolio or post some art. If you don't even understand such a simple concept as selling yourself to people, as well as making yourself look attractive on a first impression you won't succeed here, you won't succeed anywhere. We regularly get retarded artists like you who are too scared to present their art and it just devolves into shitposting, assuming that you're not just a retarded shitposter. Well, since we're getting artist shitposting going on with here, and we have a disappointed SFMLanon, I'd like to get a little more practice with art by doing a very small game with one of you anons. To show that I'm serious, attached is an image of the game I'm arting right now. I will say that I'm a programmer learning art and I'm looking for a game the size of a jam game or perhaps something mobile in size. Something where I can get experience with tiled backgrounds preferably. Certainly one of you anons has something I can assist with that isn't very large? If we are to learn from Dark Messiah and Mount & Blade?

0. Figure out what you actually want to do. Good animations is pointless unless the rest of the system supports those animations
=====
1. Increase Field of View, so if you look ahead, you can see your opponents kneecaps when looking at sea level
=====
2. There is tons of work in animations
Dark Messiah has this issue where if the enemy tries to kick you, you can't tell its doing that, because of no windup or torso movement to hint it
You just take damage, and thats it
=====
3. Accurate hitboxes on weapons
Best practice is for weapons to be exact and NPC/player hitboxes to be barely smaller
=====
4. Weapons leave trails
=====
5. Figure out a way to do defensive mechanics that isn't just "lol hold block"
I.E dash movement system + quick slashes, or a counterattack blocking system(parry)
======

What you really asked:
-Don't gimp FoV when making the animations. If its too low, you might make weird animations because it keeps blocking the field of view

-Head camera should always be leaned back for neutral/running position, so you can properly see torso and arms movement as outlines

-Is feet movement important or not? Ideally it should be disconnected from torso movement, for fluider animations

-Stop frames with trails/particles is far better than animation curves smearing everything

I work in C# but I only want artists who use GNU Paint and ImageMagick.
>>
>>166749067
That's because programmers don't make code for artists. Artists make art for programmers to implement.

It follows, then, that what the programmers are looking for isn't for artists to tell them what their game should look like (otherwise they'd be looking for concept artists and an art director). What they're looking for is people who are willing to do the work to make the art that they envision as necessary for the production of the game.

It isn't an issue of fairness.

Been making a little bit of art style changes here and there bases on feedback over the months bokube has been here.

Going through the game and making all the environment art have bump maps, better lighting, and most changing of all make sure at least 80-90% of a level has cubic art to avoid heavy art clash.

(So the best example I can give is my new trees).
>>
>>166749826
I always liked googum. I don't care what he does. He's a genius and I love (most) of his games.
>>
>>166749350
To be blunt, in fact, it's an issue of compatibility. If you can't show the style of art they want, why should they be burdened with having to go through the whole thing?

Why should the artist be forced to sit through a longwinded discussion about what they can and can't do? It's all much better handled by an artist posting their art and programmers citing interest in those skills. That is literally how it works in the actual games industry.

I want a character artist, I go look at character artist porfolios and see if I can find one that I like. I want an environment artist, I do the same.

If I ask for art when you say you're looking for a programmer and you won't post any, you might as well stop calling yourself an artist because I'm not going to waste time posting dev-art which doesn't at all represent the game I want to make.

If you think that's unfair, then perhaps you should as the artist post code that accompanies your art. It's not your job - but you apparently want it to be.

thats my goto phrase whenever this kinda """funding""" bullshit comes up for dev. because you only need to be able to fund living to work on this stuff and if you're good enough to be worth public funding you've already been working without funding to get good so any funding you get is extra. theres no reason to stop dev just because funding dried up or decide to do the bullshit AAdev did unless you literally had no plan for how to stay alive once you ran out of the funding.
given how much AAdev got from his kickstarter i'd he's pretty terrible at managing his budget.

You're telling me. None of the workers want to hurt him or have anything other than a good night with no fights anyways. But doing just the minimum force of what we had to do to get him to stop destroying everything would get us fired on charges of "abuse" even though we have to stop him or he'll send staff and/or other clients to the hospital, or worse, the morgue. This overpolitical correctness when it comes to that is completely ridiculous, as 5 staff can dogpile him and he can still run full sprint with all of us hanging off him, which I've had the joy of seeing before.

>overpolitical correctness
It's interesting, because whenever the subject came up, all workers present were unanimous that the clients shouldn't be allowed to reproduce, that several need much more supervision than we could currently provide etc. Shit that would get people here branded as supernazi and out of a job for life. The PC stuff usually comes from people that don't have to deal with the clients and have maybe once visited an institution during "pretty hours", when all the unsightly deformed, shitflingers, or ragers were out for a trip to the farm or similar. Only the one's that were slow in the head but still capable of workshop tasks remained.
I feel management always did that to show we had things "under control" so we wouldn't lose funding. It's a shame, because institutions like that are always understaffed and underfunded. Showing the PC folks the deep end would help, imho.

Something possessed me to attempt to draw not-rectangles for some reason and waste a lot of time. I only drew an idle and some move frames. I have no idea what I'm doing and art is hard; mostly went with simple colors because I don't really know shading. Bullying is encouraged.

I also changed the resolution (for the 3rd time) of the game. I kinda like this better, but now I have to adjust the GUI art and a lot of other things again. Everything is currently very large in comparison.

No shit. Sourcefag himself is a chat fag. It's not a meme that chats are the cancer of all 4chan threads and generals. They attract sad and bitter crazies with infinite free time who mistake the thread as being "their" community. This is where the forced memes and shitposting arise.

Let's list who has been attacked in today's thread by the mysterious poster (based on posting style) who likes to link old posts, articles, and screencap things for evidence:
- Googum
- Bokudev (for using assets and replacing them with original work after being criticized for it)
- Discord (for disliking assets)
- Source (completely unprompted)
Does this ring a bell for anyone else? Someone who was making a game with Unity assets? Someone who hated Googum and Source? Someone who posted links from the 4chan archive all the time? Someone who constantly complained about the threads being full of drama while contributing to it himself?

Turn-based AI is the easiest AI.
Depending on the difficulty level you want, you can define a bunch of actions the AI can take (attack, use skills, etc.) and have it pick randomly, have a priority system so it will use heals when it's low on health for example, or just fully script the fight for bosses and such.

Shmups aren't always fillled with bullet carpets like monolith has, while I get monolith isn't a bullet hell it's definitely borrowing elements of bullet hells, such as bullet patterns in rapid succession and having to move around not to get shot by getting yourself in spaces that are only a few pixels wide
It's obviously not a bullet hell, but ignoring completely that it's definitely borrowing from the genre and/or trying to say otherwise is dumb

Not all shmups rely on carpet patterns for bullets and attacks

At least we've established that ol' Dan Dan is still here and shitting up the threads with drama as usual. So no, you're not an imaginary boogeyman anymore, you should kill yourself because you are the sole reason that AGDG is constantly getting dragged off topic. Nobody believes that the Source poster is false flagging himself, either. All of the major shitposting topics (Source, rotate, assets, enginedev), can be traced back to you, your tripcode, and your game.

Either that, or you are doing a very good job of impersonating him and you should kill yourself all the same. But I can't imagine an ordinary shitposter being content with posting the same shit and getting the same responses over and over again.

UE4 is not open-source, it is source-available. "Open" refers to the code being "open" to modification, distribution, etc., which UE4 is not.

Godot is properly open-source though.

Like if you want to make an entirely new type of object in godot, like some sort of container for a level/map/area, would it be easy to do yourself?

This is how you extend Godot in C++, which will also be available in GDScript if you so desire.
Another way to modify the engine is via Plugins, which can easily add new nodes while written in GDScript. You can also enhance the editor this way.

>>
>>166765959
It's not the same thing, with how it is UE4 and all derivations are tied to unreal and can never be their own thing, because it requires their permission.

Open-source means that you can freely distribute/modify/distribute modified versions (and royalties count as a restriction as far as this is concerned)

It might look like I'm moving goalposts, but I was just being too vague about "open" earlier. The definition I am giving is the accepted one among developers who aren't marketing shills

you can either
1. make your image effect darken everything but reddish orange. this is kind of dumb but it might work for you.
2. render your fire on a separate layer on top of the already darkened world. this is p easy in unity (idk your engine)
3. if you really know your shit, I think you could write to a buffer whether or not a pixel is fire, and only darken non fire pixels in your effect. (this is like writing to a z-buffer. if you don't know these words, forget about this)

Two new things: blocking and power sliding.

Power sliding is like a riff on ML's dashing (or the Vanquish boost), except you can't control it. High speed, straight line. A decent incentive not to just use it all the time. But, it's easy to call once you've unlocked it (press crouch and dodge at the same time) and it works well as a gap closer since it instantly sets your speed; you can hit dodge and crouch, then immediately hit jump for an instant long-jump fling.

Also, blocking. Just hold dodge without pressing a direction. Slightly tweaked from ML as well; here it has a time limit (once the hand fades, it ends). It can also be carried through a dodge by continuing to hold the block/dodge key as the animation ends, meaning you can dodge into a block, which I think looks pretty neat.

Coming up, implementing the aim-and-shoot mechanics, which means setting up the secondary aim hands skeleton.
