I know it's nothing, but it's probably the last bit of progress I can make today.
Also I was wondering, would it be annoying if, when you press the key to make the mechanical arm work, you first need to wait for the player character to go to the machine and activate it? Would it be annoying?
>>

>If its that easy to trigger people here
Learn to read. The mere existence of Unity pains him so much that he tries to hide it from the OP. Like Unity is a person and he is spiting them and it will be offended and have it's feelings hurt. When really it just shows that Unity triggers nodevs hard.

>>
>>166657547
no, it's legitimately hard, often I don't know how interaction is even supposed to be possible because you can't pass messages, you can't easily get references and you can't really do anything except drag and drop, which is fine only for very simple projects

>>166657541
there are no pure classes in unity, only components, so no you can't do that, you must get the components to interact directly
>>
>>166658730
>you can't easily get references
Whats wrong with GetComponent?
>>
>>166658873
you have to hardcode every single reference, so you can't dynamically figure out who you are talking to
>>
>>166657541
You're supposed to separate data and logic so that the logic can operate on multiple pieces of data (components) at once.

It doesn't have to be manager classes or anything, it's very abstract. Unity doesn't fit the bill because all the component logic is encapsulated in the components themselves. It's compositional as opposed to inheritance-based, but it's not ECS.

>>
>>166658060
maybe, yeah. if you give the system entity a global name and hardcode that reference into the data scripts to register themselves when they get spawned
>>
>>166658926
You can pass types to GetComponent or even strings that are component type names
>>
In Python can an object hold a list of methods, either its own or another objects? Or can it only hold functions?
>>
>>166659139
>pass
from where?
>>
>>166658994
So to be proper ECS components shouldn't have functions, only fields? And then like static classes for the data processing?
>>
>>166658691
Whats the license on this stuff (granted it obviously doesn't apply to people who haven't bought it in the first place). Like do you have to credit the individual/group/seller or can you just use them once you bought them?
>>
>>166659274
Methods of an object are essentially just functions that take the object as a parameter. Many languages have syntax to turn this into x.foo() as opposed to foo(x). Python also has closures, though, which means you can wrap up an object and a method (among other things) into just a function value that can be passed around. So yes to both.

>>166659376
They can have their own methods, but generally they should be (at least conceptually) pure data that is exposed well enough that you can write functions at a "higher level" that operate on multiple components. If these functions need to go in static classes as static methods, then that's what has to happen, but you don't need any so-called manager classes.
>>
>>166659502
If it's used in a free product you don't have to do anything. It's NICE to credit the group involved but not required.

If it's used in a commercial product you don't have to credit if you're the purchaser of the product, but if you do use it without credit and you aren't the one who bought it you risk legal troubles.
>>
>>166659376
a static class won't get called in unity unless a component calls it, everything has to be a component
>>
>>166659376
>>166659570
Well, in Unity, you will need some kind of "manager class" to act in place of code that would just run in the main function or another function called by the main function. But all that manager class will do is store all the entities/components and call the systems (functions operating on components) over the entities that have those components.

I would also argue against doing the popular ECS design where all you have is arrays of components and entities are indices. That's way more genericity than you need in practice and leads to poor efficiency. I prefer to have types for each entity type that just have components as fields.

in 3.5 the positioning of mouse is fucked for retina displays and is basically unreliable on mac laptops because of it as well as iphones. 3.6 uses a different renderer completely and has no issues with retina displays anymore. Use the latest 3.6 dev build to develop with, it's basically stable anyway.

also gamepad support is pretty much 100% in, not simultaneously but ALMOST (you have to press anything on either KB+M or Gamepad to switch between them) but i should run it through other people because i've barely played twin stick shooters with a gamepad at all before

I didn't feel like reposting the poll since everyone was so negative about it and that I myself didn't feel like leading anyway.

Truthfully the idea could work, I'm sure of that, but it'd need to have a few really motivated people leading. Without leaders you can sure the project would end up failing because no one would want to commit into something seemingly unstable.
>>
>>166662864
The solution would be to have two surfaces, one for the brighter part of the lights and one for the darker part. In both cases, you draw to full white (or erase the alpha, depends on how you intend to blend it back in) and make the darker surface less effective.

Ahh, I haven't decided on doing anything with Patreon yet, but that's most likely the one that I'll go after if I decide for it. I'm not even wanting a lot with it anyways, all I'd need is double digits, so it's like, maybe I can just find some misc jobs around town or something. I don't really have anything to show yet, so I don't feel like I can put on a show...

As for art, I'm a programmer, not an artist. Best I can do is make character sprites in the style I chose for my game. Which, you know, maybe I can open commissions for that or something. I dunno, I'd just like a little extra so I can actually afford things. I'll have to think about this more.

As long as the player is aware that they can push objects like the bookshelf, yeah, that's fair. You hint at it pretty well (the lowered part of the wall that forms the door frame, the way the bookshelf itself is emphasized).

The only thing I'd look at is, even in the webm, you can kind of see through a crack between the top of the bookshelf and the bottom of the doorframe.Maybe raise the height of the bookshelf's model a bit?

I initially considered Famitracker to work with, but I quickly realized that I wouldn't get the job done as quickly as I'd want to. As an FL Studio user, I found PXTone much more familiar to use. With a little effort, I can do most of the stuff I can pull off with Famitracker.

ImpulseTracker I knew of, but it's interface was something I never got used to. If there was a tracker I'd be most likely putting the most interest in, it would be Sunvox.

Spent quite some time (like 1 month?) upgrading my game from the OGRE 1.0 system to the OGRE 2.0 system. It was worth it in the end, just about tripled my framerate, gave me really efficient shadows so I can have tree shadows now, and fixed some problems I was having with overlapping alpha textures and alpha texture shadows.

Also I made this new "happy" forest tileset, to contrast the spooky forest tileset I had before.

For 3D: Unity

And that's it. If you use any other engine, then that's because you have already dug deep enough to find one which you like. With having the "For .D" tag, we could be safe from the daily "what engine to use for 2/3D?" questions.

I'm really debating whether I should finish my first game or not. Basically all that's left is find better sounds, create a few more levels with Tiled, minor UI updates and fix a few bugs.
However the game itself alright, but gets kinda boring pretty soon. And to fix most of the problems with the game would take almost as long as creating a new one. I'm sure I could do much better now that I've learned all these new things.
I didn't really make it expecting to make money, I thought I'd just throw it on steam with the rest of the garbage for 1-2$ or something and make 50$ or something. But I'm not sure I want to be associated with the quality of the product I'd be putting out.

I give up on 3D modeling. I don't understand how you artfags can enjoy this. It's so tedious and it's not even as satisfying as making something by hand.

Honestly, none. It's like choosing a game engine. Pure preference.
My only rec is do not buy anything. Most DAWs have trials. try them. Pirate them if the trial is not enough. Just don't buy.
Begginer friendly DAWs, imho, are.
FL studio is popular with beginners. It has a big community.
LMMS is a free open source wannabe fl studio.
MuLab is very simple too, but has almost no community.
Anything beyond that is probably something you'd be interested in if you wanted to become a pro musician. I can tell you about the "big" DAWs if you want to.

That would be putting the cart before the horse, for the moment I'm only interested in learning. LMMS seems pretty alright, and it's free to so I don't have to actually commit a crime to be able to use it for as much as I need, if I eventually get into it enough to warrant an upgrade to a big boy DAW, I'll shell out the bucks.

Thanks a lot for the help man. I'm downloading that tl;dr right now!

You can probably fit any game into that template. But if your GAME IDEA fits into that template, it's shit. I doubt the people who came up with, let's say, patapon, went "it's a strategy game but with rhythm". They probably thought a bit more about what the game consisted of.

Cool but it either needs to swing back and forth as if by force of momentum and gravity (i.e. have a less jarring transition in direction) or it needs to move its body in such a way that accounts for the jerkiness when it changes direction (i.e. a flexing of muscles that would produce such a change).

has anybody gone through drawbox? i've practiced drawing lines and circles and circles in between lines for ~3 hours now but my circles still look like potatoes(???) and my lines are curved(???) and if i try to draw a line between two vertices, i always overshoot.

will it ever get better? am i expecting mastery of line drawing and circle drawing to come too fast, are 3 hours not enough? because i'm not sure that my approach is even right to begin with. for example, whenever i do draw a proper circle, it doesn't feel as if my body is making a mental note of the exact circumstances which led to the proper circle so that i can recall how to draw proper circle if i have to. instead, it's pretty much pure coincidence and i'm not sure that if i sat here for a 100 hours drawing circles like a retard, that it would somehow turn into an actual skill eventually.

am i wrong? has anybody tried it?

More shitty Power of Unreal™ turret progress. Also fixed an annoying bug with spawning the bullet too close to the turret that caused collision detection to freak out and delete the thing before I could even do anything with it.

I'm not really working towards anything other than having a robust enough turret that I could theoretically re-use this in the future and it's decent practice (in making something I already know) for wrapping my head around the UE4 way of doing things.

Once you get past the lesson/homework, you're supposed to continue the practice a little bit every day for the rest of your life. So no, 3 hours is nothing. But don't sit down and expect to grind it all out after a 6-hour marathon block, either.

for a quick patch of grass do the following.

model several clumps of grass, say about a four or five clumbs each with a dozen blades per clump with varrying lengths and bends. duplicate them. give half the clumps green material, give other half brownish yellow material (for dry/dead grass)

Now make a plane, subdivide the shit out of it, add noise to deform it, use a displacement modifier, get a nice bumpy ground, add a dirt color material to the plane.

now add a hair particle system to the plane, using your clumps as the hair, play around or watch a tutorial on hair particle systems.

Like if you only have 3 or 4 layers of parallax then you might as well remove it because it looks like garbage. imo any parallax-layered sidescroller should have a minimum of 10-20 parallax levels because the effect looks so comfy. It should be considered a crime to do it with any less.

>>
>>166711673
Oh, cool.

Are you using any other shaders than CRT? I'm not very good with GM:S and I'm having difficulties having 2 shaders at same time, so could you or someone else help with this?

Like as far as I know, you can't simply have 2 shaders at same time on application surface, but you can draw the application surface on, let's say surface 2 and then apply shader to surface 2 and then apply second shader on surface 3 and draw both surfaces on 4th surface that is the surface that will be drawn to the screen, or am I misunderstanding something?
>>
Is it better to say

I don't know if checking the value or setting the value is faster. I would guess checking is faster since you only read and not write but I wanted to check

>>
>>166712217
>>166712010
it is much faster to blidnly set it

the cpu must stop and wiat for 40 cycles to get the answer from the ram for the check

whereas it can fire off a write in 1 cycle and continue immidiately, that write will take a 40 cycle trip to main ram but the CPU doesnt wait for it

so it is 40 times faster to just set it without reading first

reading causes cpu to block and that slows it all down, always minimize reading

What are some ways to handle time progression in a HM-type "day to day simulator" games?
>time in game passes with some relation to realtime (i.e. 30 rel minutes per game day like in Sims)
can't do it
>actions advance time and you can only do say 3-4 activities per day
leaning towards this one
>actions spend resources (i.e. you have 50 energy per day, spend it with actions/partially replenish with other actions but you'll have to g2bed at the end anyway)
seems like it would be potentially easy to game it and a bother to balance properly
>???
I NEED YOUR HALP
>>
>>166712647
>>166712217
>>166712010
btw if you want to check it it will not be easy because the CPU cache will most likely improve the performance

but on the datasheet a lot of CPU have 40 cycles main memory latency so an uncached read will take at least that long

and because you are branching on the result of the read, it probably cannot do anything out-of-order in the meantime either, so i bet it is just super slow

memory accesses usually are only a cycle or two because of caching. If that bool is accessed a lot, it's likely already in the cache, and if it's not accessed that much then the performance doesn't matter.

>>166712759
Modern branch predictors are very good and will probably be able to do a bunch of stuff anyway.

The main reason NOT to do this is for simplicity and understandability of code.

While it is faster just to blindly set it, I think the more important issue is not worrying about tiny performance shit like this and just do what make the most sense as far as code/instructions go. You want this bool to be set to true in both possible conditions, so just set it to true. Avoid if statements if you can in general.

I once had this weird face that was invisible. I could see the center dot that indicated there was a face there, but I just could not grab the motherfucker
