yeah wraithform is really nice
how are you getting wraith and stoneskin? Or are you not casting stone. I guess your hp is low and mana high, are you a regular 2-realm mage mage?
>>
>>166480717
It increases your spell proficiency, which will reduce the mana cost and failure rate (not much, for that though).

If you're one of the mages, you'll get more spell levels that you need to learn all your spells (assuming you're not doing any realm swapping trickery), so you can spend some extras to immediately master your favorite spells.

If you're a rogue or something, I have no idea how many spell levels you have to spare.
>>
>>166480674

I'm a priest, which is mage but better if you are willing to take death as your primary realm.
>>
>>166480717
>>166481210
this, but worth noting spells already increase in proficiency with use in the depths, so it's most useful to improve a recently acquired key spell. But yeah mages end the game with a billion unused spell slots (possibly useful if you swap secondary realms though, since [only] mages can do that)
>>
>>166481628
eh maybe, certainly the melee and hp is better, and in the lategame priests come online in a pretty good way, but losing magey access to Eat Magic is actually a very big deal, since that ability alone basically more than triples your mana pool in the mid-lategame.

>>166453428
Theoretically unlimited resources are not a meme, you dip. Limited resources are the real meme, a meme repeated by thoughtless Crawl players with no sense of perspective on the genre.

Access to resources determines how you play a game: In Crawl, they're given to you, at random, throughout the dungeon. You might find a fuckawesome weapon on D4 that trivializes the rest of the game, or you might not. You might find 5 blink scrolls, you might not. It's a roll of the dice. It trivializes any sense of equipment progression, just like that other boardgame, Brogue.

But that would never happen in PCB, because PCB is about taking risks in deeper levels for better loot, not having the assurance that if you follow the exact same route each time, you're guaranteed a win provided you're not a fuckup. A weapon on D4 (or even D40) is never going to last until D100. There is actual incentive to play ambitiously, since deeper levels are guaranteed to drop better items. Having (theoretically) unlimited escape options is irrelevant, since you're 100 times more likely to find an enemy you can't defeat than in Crawl.

IA is suffering, but it's still fun.

Still, I really don't think I'd be playing it if it didn't have the satisfying sound effects. The shotgun and dynamite sounds are like little bursts of dopamine that keep me going through all the black mamba snake trap bullshit.

Finally got a MiBe win after my first three wins being non-Trog.

Man, maybe I just completely suck, but right around Vaults:5, Trog becomes completely useless.

* Burn Spellbooks: trash, plus inventory bloat.
* Berserk: strong, but ultimately garbage against Zot-level enemy patterns, where multiple fighting techniques (melee + range) and high movement/attack speed are always needed.
* Berserk bonus: even at high piety levels, the chance of getting more turns is still retardedly small.
* Trog's Hand: admittedly kind of useful, although you'll probably be MR+++ by the time you're doing Zot stuff. In any case, besides maybe Regen, it's not that helpful late game.
* Brothers in Arms: Absolute. Fucking. Garbage. Depths and Vaults:5 are literally the last places in the game where the summons are halfway useful -- after that, they're just too flimsy, even with a complete team via multiple BiA invokes.

* Gifts: useful if you haven't gotten a good antimagic weapon yet, although that's a bit unlikely.

I've said this before: MiBe, at least in current Crawl, is vastly overrated. While early and easy access to Berserk seems nice for noobs, late game gets quite difficult very quickly. Okawaru non-Slow/Exh buffs seem infinitely better even without summons, and TSO's 6* passives (rN+++, SeeInv, increased accuracy) along with his abilities (most powerful non-evil summons, increased shield, strong 2-3 square-range attack) make him probably the best melee god.

I think, overall, Trog might be nice if you want to get your feet wet: if you want to reach Lair for the first time and/or get your first runes. But once you're not outright terrible at surviving early Dungeon, you should _never_ play with Trog again.

I can't decide between Drakeling Merchant and MistElf Necromancer.
>>
>>166494172
>a pack of berserking giants and trolls is weak
that is really really strong, you just have to learn how to manage your summons. If you summon your BiA between you and an orb of fire, then of course the orb is going to blow them all away with fireball in a few turns. But if you make the summons not between you and the OoF, then they don't get hit by the fire, and they start tearing that OoF in half.

git gud BiA is one of the best summoning abilities in the game

regular falis is really good so this makes some sense. But regular falis is also rBase 4d6 slay *evil* and other things so....

>>
>>166508141
What effects do slay and *slay* and the various brands have on the damage dice of a weapon? Is it just a flat bonus to each strike or does it multiply the dice or something esoteric?
>>
>>166509287
It multiplies the dice.
Slay evil is x2
*slay* evil is x3
most slays and brands are x3
*slay* dragon/undead/etc is x5

the game just picks the best applicable slay/brand rather than applying all of them, except sharpness/mana which both stack multiplicatively with other shit
>>
>>166509287
for exacties read in the help files (use ? ingame) but it's a multiplier to base dice. Thus, the very best weapons tend to be ones with large base dice, good general slays (like *evil*), extra attacks, and generally best with fewer larger dice than more smaller dice (e.g. 1d30 is better than 30d1 because wearing vilya would turn them into 4d30 and 33d1 respectively)

Chaos brands choose different brands each time (weighted towards ones the target does not resist), it's not a brand of chaos damage. Vampirism drains life from drainable (generally, this means living) opponents based primarily on the damage dealt.

Sharpness and *Sharpness* each work with an exploding die roll that can keep increasing the damage, so theoretically they could do an arbitrarily large amount of damage in any given blow. In practice regular vorpal increases damage by around 22% (and is accounted for in your charsheet), vorpal_2 is better but I'm not sure what the average damage increase is.
>>

>>
>>166511680
PCB base element breath maxes out at 900, poison at 600

vanilla base elements are 1600, poison 900
but resists are much stronger in vanilla angband. one source of equipment-resistance reduces damage to 1/3, and temporary resist on top of that (from a potion or ring activation) reduces damage to 1/9th

in PCB with an elvenkind armor and a !resistance active you are only at 65% resistance instead of vanilla angband's 89%
>>
>>166512607
poschengband breaths were about a year ago (?) rebalanced, the base elemental + poison breaths used to be 1600 like with Vanilla. Back then, high resists scaled at the same rate as regular resists.

cold touch is a pretty shitty level 1 spell but once you get to level 2+ you should be able to just spam summons to deathball over thieves/wargs i think
>>
>>166514246
poschengband? step 1 is convincing yourself you don't really have any touch attacks (well, excepting the occasional controlled situation, or the extreme early game). Use staff of summon hounds/hydras/monsters as well as your school's summoning spells to keep you out of danger as much as possible. Really, you do not want to be using your touch spells in 99% of situations, wearing statsticks is better. The capstone spell "Necromancy" is really strong, summoning and buffing a bunch of strong undead.

>>166517970
step one: either have enough hp/resists to NOT get oneshot, or else actually bring a source of monster detection (you should always have a rod of detect monsters anyways)

ancient dargons only do ~170ish damage when you have 0% resist
>>
>>166518158
Ancient multi-hued and dracolisks definitely do more than that and appear in some spots.

Also you need see invisible to see great crystal drakes.

Also also watch out for the bird uniques.
>>
>>166519491
Yeah crystal drakes are the real spooky bit.

But as long as you have any source of sinv, the telmora -detectmonsters, and a nonzero number of teleport scrolls, you should be good

if you see a nasty like crystal drake/AMHD you just teleport so you're far away from it and go < > to reset the level

I beg to differ anon, even though your vilya point is valid, more smaller dice offers far more consistent damage. 1d30 deals 15 damage on average and can whiff to hit for 1, whereas 30d1 will hit for 30 every time.

It's from using death realm's vampiric branding on it.

Are you keeping tabs on all the players ITT?

Oh God, are you keeping tabs on me?
>>
>>166522015
Oh, whoops. That explains why I couldn't get polish shield to work on anything.
>>
As far as I can tell the only actual use for them is sticking brands on a wizardstaff for free resists.

For most "really good base type" weapons, they're rare enough that you probably want to save them for an art reforge instead of immediately using them with a brand spell.

And for weapons that aren't really good base types, slapping a shitty low-level brand on them will likely not give you anything better than the weapons you already have.

I see you're carrying multiple types of weapons, but don't have a single point invested in fighting and any weapon skill or dodging. Your int is through the roof compared to your dex, stop pumping int.

So:
A) get points in M&F because you might as well use that mace, even with your 6 str, until you can swing it at 1.0 auts (that's a turn) consistently.
B) Get points in fighting, for the love of god your HP is ridiculously low. Get them around 100.
C) Get some motherfucking dodging.
By the way you're playing, I'm surprised you got this far.
First A, then alternate between B and C.
Lock your magic skills and don't touch them until you have done those two.

By the way you're playing, I'm surprised you got this far.

It is, and it isn't....
Purely as a roguelike, it's not very good if I'm honest. Crafting and such things are good and fun as are your character building options, but it's horribly unbalanced and by far the biggest issue is enemy variation - you generally won't find yourself caring about what it is you're hitting.
That said though, the humour in it is outstanding. If you imagine what a roguelike made by Lucasarts would have looked like, it would be this. It's an absolute joy reading all the descriptions littered around.

If you want a break and want to play something really casual, then DoD is a good choice.

At least i'll keep dying knowing that i'm playing a REAL ROGUELIKE.
My drakish merchant literally was unable to kill a gremlin, and when i tried to run away once i realized Merchants fucking sucked i triggered an arrow trap which killed me.
Any way to find traps aside from being an assassin? They seem to be my worst enemy early game.

Dunno, they are decent looking, but nothing compared to DCSS.
>>166572082
Yeah, my Mist Elf had not even 10 hp in the beginning, and even with this physical damage reduction he almost died after two hits in melee.

Necromancer looks like fun though, and even Merchant has a great roleplaying feel, especially the whole "carry more stuff, have discounts, specialize in selling a specific article" thing. Maybe i'll try a wizard or a healer next, or i'll just try again with Necromancer or Merchant, but the latter seems quite hard to play properly, i can't do anything except being a jew.

ADoM often feels like it's being obtuse to fuck with you. Down to the FAQ with the creator going "lol its going to be closed source forever learn the game for yourself to have fun :)" followed by his gigantic list of "I WONT DO ANY OF THIS EVER"

>>
>>166566143
So wait, what's different about it and the one up on the official site?
>>
>>166586707
there's a changelog in the thread before because a dude asked the same thing
>>
>>166583961
Let's see here:
* 10.8% chance for anything found on the floor to be a type of armor
* 20% chance for any piece of armor found on the floor to not be body armor
* 20% chance for the non-body armor to specifically be boots

and then the game rolls two probabilities: if you get boots, then there's a 1/8 probability of them being Naga barding. *If* that fails, then there's a 1/7 chance of the boots being Centaur barding.

That comes to 0.054% for either barding to appear on the ground -- that is, 5.4 in 10000 chance.
>>
>>166586707
I'd post the changelog, but I have changed some things that it isn't so up to date. Haven't had much time to touch it, unfortunately. Been focused on school-shit, mapping-projects, programming, drawing, all sorts of wonky shit - and still lagging on some important stuff.

Key notes would be:
> Heavily accelerated experience-gain, more significant at higher levels. Also applies to skills.
> Much easier identification.
> Merchant's Friend perks are made available to everyone, although at higher cost.
> Some itemization changes in order to reduce endgame-grinding.
> Nexus doesn't scramble stats, instead siphons.
> Artifact jewelry can generate in dungeons, artifact naming expanded
> New birth options ( runesword start, 'coffeebreak mode' )
> Three new classes, Hunter, Maledict, Alchemist
> Bunch of new artifacts
> Glass Castle and Mines bosses
> Monster spell damage lore
> Some other balance changes

It's kinda easier, but that comes with QoL/acceleration-changes.

And as for the name, R actually doesn't have specific meaning. Perhaps it is Remix. Rearrange. Resurrection. Revenge. Rumpus?
>>
>>166587229
> Nexus doesn't scramble stats, instead siphons.

And talking about it, I updated PCBR. Small update, just updated my local repo, pulled changes, made small change to Skillmaster ( since the pseudo-ID isn't as much of a thing because how available it is, Skillmasters get pseudo-ID and very limited automapping ).
Also updated builds and regenerated help-files.

>>166587506
Felt that it was rather frustrating to get character sometimes made useless by bad roll. It is still hurtful ( max -12 stat points to another ).
>>
>>166557421
I found two wands of teleport and a wand of hasting.

Also an artifact executioner's axe v - the +8 frozen axe "Frostbite" {freezing cloud, *Noise +Fly rC+} in lair just now.

Thanks xom!

Yes, not like Dredmor's though.

A typical roguelike:
>Interface takes some time to used to, once you do it's totally fine.
>Controls take some time to get used to, once you do they are totally fine. All you need to play is a keyboard.
>Gameplay is quick thanks to the lack of animations.
>Inventory management requires some thought, what consumables you want to keep and what you can afford to throw away.

Dredmor:
>Interface is awful, everything looks ugly, is way too small and is used with a fucking mouse.
>Movement and controls are designed for mouse and are awful
>Animations last a year each
>Inventory management consists of constantly throwing away 4836 types of cheese that all heal for one and 24736 different wands that have silly names and descriptions that do not, in any way, describe the function of the wand.
>Inventory management also consists of constantly teleporting to your home instance and dropping everything on the floor, you can always return and pick them up.

Inventory could as well be unlimited in Dredmor, now gaming the play feels like a fucking chore.

Pick unrelated, most fun I've had in Crawl for a while.
>>
>>166592635
dredmor on release didn't have the teleport-to-extradimensional-stash shit going on

if you wanted to hoard the 1000 different crafting ingredients they had to actually take up space in your inventory
>>
I just got this idea:
>Every level is a normal map and a spooky map layered underneath it
>Each cell per map has a number between 1 and however-many-cells-there-are
>Each unit has a "corruption value"
>Each unit subjectively perceives all cells with a number below their corruption value as a spooky map cell
>Vision has to be symmetrical for units to see each other(e.g. if you are standing on a spooky cell, a unit can't see you unless they perceive said cell as spooky too)
>Cell numbers slowly shift around by themselves, and can be altered by certain abilities
I was also thinking that actions should be faster for units that are standing on spooky cells, but that leads to some weirdness.

So what the fuck am I missing here? When I encounter huge fuckass groups like that it's just GG?
>>
>>166601121
Here's lesson #1 of roguelikes:

Your goal is to beat the game, not to kill everything. If you run into a bunch of enemies, you should consider running away, usually to a floor you've already cleared (i.e. the floor above you).

By the same token, if you run into a unique monster -- the "named enemy" you mentioned -- then you should consider diving to the next floor, taking on easier enemies until you're strong enough to go back and kill the unique.

Crawl is especially kind to you in the beginning of the game with regards to surviving. There are three upwards stairs and three downward stairs per level, except for the top and bottom floors of a given branch. Crawl levels are also quite big on average, so if you have to escape up one set of stairs, either of the remaining two stairsets will probably take you far from the action.

Fun things that I want to add as dda mod :

With Static NPC on, you'll meet crazy scientist in basement with lots of chemical tools that will ask you for :

- shocker brute, zombie scientist, or bio-operator corpse in exchange for mutagen that will give you beneficial mutation.
In short, you trade bionics that you usually get by butchering with mutation.

- zombie hulk or zombie brute corpse in exchange for 3 random books
Sometimes, the library doesn't generate the book that you want.
This is another way to get them.

Yeah, I just checked it, zombie hulk has 3500 volume, so it's out of question.
You can wield zombie hulk corpse, but it's silly.
Anyway, you need 19 strength or 14 strength + Strong Back to lift regular zombie corpse, or you'll get overburdened debuff.

Fun things to add (2) :
Another static NPC : artifact trader.
It's fun to collect random artifacts, but unfortunately mine or temple is rare.
Artifact will be priced at $500.
You must trade to at least 1 dynamic NPC to get $1,000 or bring a cash card with $1,000 charge.
Location : Cozy basement (the one with billiard table) and refugee center.

Most static NPC will be placed at basement so they don't get accidentally killed by zombie horde.

Big thing about Slime is rCorr, which you'll never have enough of. Spider/Swamp/Shoals would be doable even without Clarity, but I guess it makes it easier.
>>
>>166653598
You don't really need clarity for swamp, just get rPois and you're good to go.
>>
>>166653598
You really only need Clarity for Shoals, it's not useful at all in the other branches. But sure, go right ahead, do Slime.

>Go down
>Not only do both the wights follow me
>But I enter a room FULL of ogres and an orc warlord
>OHSHIT
>Run back upstairs
>Now I have two wights and a warlord
>Ded

I don't think these are the games for me, this is just too frustrating. I prefer less luck requirements in my experience
>>
>>166656140
Right, let me list the things you did wrong.
1. Not using Ctrl+X to examine the wights (it will tell you that they do not breath and as such won't get affected by Meph Cloud, wasting mana
2. not leading them into a hallway. That they 'shrug around' your fire column tells me that you decided to fight them in a large, open area, making your fire columns useless. In hallways, they will either walk through the fire or stop dead in their tracks.
3. >>>>>Go Down. Do not do this unless there is no other options, for example, you're about to get ganked by a centaur. Use stairs and go UP to floors YOU HAVE ALREADY CLEARED, especially if you're against a foe that is the same speed or slower than you, which is what wights are.
3. not using any of your panic buttons. That there was an Orc warlord means that you're either in O:4, Depths/D15+, or had an OOD encounter. Regardless, you should have had a panic button available to you - a scroll of blink, a potion of haste, something.
4. Playing a mage with no prior experience. Mages require a lot more patience and the ability to know when to book it - usually all the time on the early floors when you find something that resists you - and how fast to turn tail.
>>
>>166656140
If you're new then wizard isn't really a great starting background.

Try some easy melee like Hill Orc/Minotaur fighter or if you desperately want to try magic, be a draconian conjurer.

Backgrounds like wizard require a little more finesse and punish mistakes much harder than stronger spellbook starts or heavy melee.

play conjurer like this:
>train conjuration 100% until you can memorise searing ray at level 2
>train conjurations/spellcasting 50/50 until you can memorise battlesphere
(In the meantime, magic dart and searing ray are your bread and butter spells.)
>once you have battlesphere, do conjurations/charms 50/50 until it around 10% fail rate
at this point battlesphere + magic dart are so overwhelming that you will steamroll pretty much everything until you have to do a rune branch.
>>
>>166656140
Post dump, I'm pretty sure that "I'm going to go play games that require less luck," is something I've seen before and I live in perpetual fear of being baited.

Also, you made several mistakes but I'll talk about them more after you provide the dump.
>>
>>166648431
No, just by editing the artifact files.

>>166656140
See:
>usually to a floor you've already cleared (i.e. the floor above you)

The rule of thumb, with Crawl, is that you shouldn't go downstairs if you're uncomfortable taking on the regular (non-unique, non-"out of depth") monsters on a given floor. Your mistake was presumably going down instead of up. On the same note, you should strive to clear floors entirely so that you have safe spaces to return to -- however, as stated, if it's too dangerous, it's not an absolute requirement. Do note that floor-clearing isn't the best strategy for all roguelikes.

The other Crawl tip is to not go into unexplored areas (the "black" area right outside your line of sight) if you can help it. The wait button (comma "," or "s") is very powerful for bringing enemies toward you, as is just moving towards areas you've already seen and defeated enemies in.

By the same token, beware of sound! "Intelligent" enemies (orcs, gnolls, kobolds, and many more) tend to shout to get the attention of other enemies. Likewise, fighting and certain magic spells (you can specifically look up the noise a spell makes in game) create sound. Usually, sound isn't a huge issue, but being careful and quiet in the first few floors makes the game much easier.

Also, as others have stated, caster/mage classes in Crawl tend to be pretty difficult, especially in the early game. You're better off with a melee-oriented race and class, such as a Minotaur of some sort.
>>
>>166656140

You're right. These games aren't for stupid people.
>>
>>166656140
Um... That was totally avoidable, you had at least 2 ways to survive/kill them. Blink and INTELLIGENT use of fire.
>>
>>166649368

There's still a lot of content that could be justifiably nerfed, removed or too problematic to be reworked so it gets removed.
>>
>>166656140
ALSO:

I think >>166656852's tip
>1. Not using Ctrl+X to examine the wights
can't be stressed enough.

With Crawl and ALL roguelikes, your only hope of doing well is by examining almost anything interesting that you see.

Ctrl+x, or x= to examine monsters. Press v and see their descriptions. The game has a nice "harmless, easy, dangerous, extremely dangerous" guide for enemy danger, along with how much damage their melee attacks can potentially do and what spells they (might) have.

Even if you don't want to outright spoil yourself with wikis/learndbs, you'd be a fool not to use the in-game info.

Accuracy isn't really a big deal, since the +/- is rarely more than a few percentage points of the calculation that involves Dexterity, enchantments, slaying, enemy EV, and so on. The *most* important traits are current attack delay, minimum possible delay, and base damage (along with handedness, if you're considering shields).

* Current attack delay is obvious. Try to not use melee weapons whose delay is 1.4+ turns.

* Min delay (both the actual speed and how long it takes to get there) is important. It's a big reason why finding a super-strong weapon early on might not be that great, since it'll take a while to swing quickly.

* Base damage is subtle but important. In a nutshell, [a dice roll of] your base damage has to overcome [a dice roll of] your enemy's AC in order for *any* damage to be done. With weak weapons against enemies with decent AC, there's a reasonable chance that you'll never put a dent in them.

* Handedness affects whether you can carry shields or not. Since weapons with higher base damage tend to be two-handed (and highly damaging one-handed weapons are usually rare: eudemon blades, double swords, eveningstars, etc.), it's another thing to weigh with base damage.

Second question, when a special or enchanted weapon says things like "it inflicts extra damage", is that already counted in the weapon damage?

No, base damage is just the damage that comes from the weapon type. The extra damage from a particular brand then gets added on to that base damage.

I suppose so. That said, Druids are theoretically very powerful; they get a spell that gives them two attacks a turn and a +4 Strength bonus. Since you add half your Strength to to-hit and damage, and they get two more spells that increase Strength by (up to) 5 and 6, respectively, you start dealing a minimum of 30 damage per turn, not to mention crits. In a game where even in the midgame, enemies have something like ~40 HP, that's big. Unfortunately, none of those spells stack with each other, so you can "only," get +3 to hit and damage from their +Strength spells.

However, they have a bunch of +to-hit and +damage spells that do stack; by level 4, they should be able to get +8 to-hit & damage, +2d8 temporary HP, and +5 to all saving throws from those alone. This assumes that the given Druid has the Intelligence/MP for 1 4th level spell, 1 3rd level spell, and 1 2nd level spell by the fourth level.
>>
>>166675482
lamo whoops it's 40d40

I tried a Thaumaturgist a while back, but even though I had a huge amount of buffs that protected me from everything but critical hits, only having Decastave for damage was incredibly frustrating. >>166676294
I was saying theoretically in the sense that just reading their spell list makes it seems like they could pull +15 Strength out whenever they feel like it, but none of the +Strength spells stack so it's actually just a waste of a spell slot.

non-Abjurer Mage Armour+innate 5 natural armor+barkskin with 5 caster levels. Honestly thinking about picking up Iron Skin (another 5 innate natural armor) next level, I'm just not sure if it'd stack or not. I know Flesh Armor doesn't stack with anything, and I'm worried about wasting a feat on it.

For reference, full plate armor is about 9-8-6.

I'm not the anon who was asking, but it seems to me that the hand is far more valuable than the eye, and that there is no combo bonus for having both. From what I can tell from that file, the hand effectively doubles the damage of direct damage spells, and for variable spells doubles both the number of dice and number of sides (2d4 becomes 4d8). The hand also lowers the failure rate of spells. The eye on the other hand just seems to reduce the mana cost of spells.
However having not played (yet) as a necromancer, would I be right in thinking that the hand takes up an equipment slot while the eye does not? If you literally replace your eye with it, I can't see why it would...
Also is this PCB or just PCBR?

I'm getting fed up with crawl, I know the information I want is there but I can't get at it.

It tells me the base damage of a weapon, it's + and it's magic modifiers, but I can't find exactly how much I'm going to be doing per turn with a set weapon.
I understand it's an equation involving my appropriate appropriate attribute like Strength, my proficiency with the weapon affecting it's speed, the + or - of the weapon, and the magical effect, but it doesn't say what any of that means anywhere. Just telling me "Extra injury" or "Inflicts damage" doesn't tell me anything, and combat logs just say I hit stuff, not for how much damage or why.
Investigating an enemies healthpool would be much more effective if I had any idea what I was rolling.

How do I get it to tell me what I want? I'm a stat junkie, spend hours with shit like DarkSouls character sims, so to have a game I was expecting to be in-depth keeping simple info from me is infuriating.

You're letting the memes confuse you.
The greedy jew schtick is actually (and factually) created and perpetuated by jews, to make it seem like jews are openly and crudely greedy and money hungry. The reason is because this is a stereotype that's easy to shirk, they aren't going to go cutthroat for a few quick bucks, and when they don't you'll think "Oh, okay that must be one of the good jews"

Instead they manipulate people to gain power, and with power comes wealth. Literally every market of importance is either controlled by or cornered by powerful jewish families, open your eyes. While you're watching for the hand reaching for you're wallet, you're missing the hands leaning on your bank and government.

The eye of vecna goes in the light slot.

The eye doesn't have great special bonuses for necros but it is nicein general. In addition to the eye's stated bonuses of +2 int, +10% mana, and telepathy, it also gives nocto-vision like Ninjas get, meaning you can see perfectly in the dark. It's the equivalent of an infinite-radius light source.

this still needs the actual bonuses from brands though

IIRC:

fire/cold adds random2(damage_done)/2 + 1, affected by mons resistance
vorpal adds random2(damage_done)/3 + 1, unresistable
drain adds random2(damage_done)/2 +1 and also applies the draining debuff which makes monsters weaker in various ways, but checks the relatively common rNeg
holy adds random2(damage_done) * 3/2 + 1, but only affects certain monsters
poison does some stuff based on the damage but i'm too lazy to figure out how monster poisoning works. more damage means more poisoned, though
vamp has a 2-in-5 chance to heal you for 1+random2(damage_done)
antimagic applies a stacking debuff based on the damage done that gives monsters a chance to fail spells

elec has a 1/3 chance to add 8+random2(13) elec damage
pain has a necroskill/(necroskill+1) chance to add random2(1 + necroskill) negative energy damage
distort has a bunch of effects including blinking, teleporting, banishing, or making things "warp horribly" and doing bonus damage
chaos can randomly emulate any of the other brands, or it can do some special chaos-only things like confusion, unresistable paralysis, heal/haste/berserk monster, clone monster, turn monster into a shapeshifter, inflict random miscasts....

>tfw you get +4 Bracers of Killing Hands
Human's might not get Devouring, or Magic Resistance, or other cool racial features, but extra stats, extra feats, and extra Perks make up for a lot.
It's a shame that only Int, Cha, and Wis are actually likely to max out; I haven't figured out the trick to training Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution, and as far as I can tell Luck is literally luck-based. As in, Luck will occasionally train up to xx/06, or xx/15, and once I even saw xx/58, but nothing I've done has ever effected it that I can tell.
>>
>>166689983
Grinding luck is annoying as fuck. Basically you train luck by being at a dungeon level that's higher than your character level, but that doesn't take it all the way. An another thing that trains luck is drinking from fountains, which can randomly fuck you in a whole lot of ways. So basically you need to save any fountains you see, delay your levelups to get luck training from fighting enemies on floors above your level, and when you get the luck to /60 or /80 or whatever it goes up to then double back to tip it over by fountain drinking.

If you want to train luck you have to go full fucking autism.

I'm going to eat all these trolls, go back and eat all the drow/ogres that I leave behind, and see how much experience I get out of it. Currently 37923, I'm figuring I can get to at least 40000.

Humans may have the highest inherent potential, but Orcs and Dragonkin will always be the only ones that max out their physical stats.

I'm not sure what to do with fountains and sinks in nethack.
As a low level character I avoid them for their dangers unless if I'm a valk or knight getting an excalibur but that's about it.
>>
>>166704630
fountains are pretty safe to ignore outside of excalibur shenanigans

sinks have a number of niche uses. dropping duplicate rings into them will give a message that can identify the ring (at the cost of the one you dropped). drinking from them is a bad idea almost all of the time. kicking them will eventually produce one of each of the following:
-a black pudding, which is pretty useless but a safe source of exp early
-a succubus if you are male or an incubus if you are female. the reason you don't want to kick sinks super early or if your int+cha is bad. with high int+cha you can get some extra pw from them though
-a random ring. usually stop kicking when you get this out of the sink.
>>
>>166705252
I'm playing DynaHack and I have no idea how level progression is there.
Why should one stop kicking sinks after the ring comes out? Shouldn't it train dexterity?
>>
>>166704630
forgot to mention you can dig pits in fountains to produce pools of water. these are useful for wiping scrolls to get blank paper, and for diluting potions to get potions of water. the paper is used with magic markers to produce more useful scrolls, and the water turned into holy (and unholy) water to manipulate blessings and curses on your items.
>>
>>166705480
Yeah I'm aware of those mechanics.
But I haven't seen a single magic marker in ages. I feel that the latest DynaHack version may have made them rarer.

>>166704143

Got up to CL21 as my latest Death-Sword. Good list of slays, +2 AC (which made me have like 28 total), still no resists.

Path was:
Stronghold 1 till Cl5
Thieves Quest
Warg Quest
Stronghold 10 until 17ish
Get Icky Cave, Orc Cave recalls
Morivant
Angband 6
Angband 12
Icky Cave 1... had to teleport away at low health, decided to take out some random p which hit me harder than I expected.

Guess what I should have done was ignore the mob and heal up. Actually, what I should have done was hit up the Orc Caves as I had Slay Orc and it wasn't terribly hard -- and Orcs are loot pinatas.

Running with what amounts to no resists is tough. Still getting used to things. Stronghold 10 was good stuff, should have stayed on there for a few hours.

Plus, I hate the color scheme.
>>
>>166709932
Actually, the switch to the character "!" was chosen, because, unlike a sensible adventurer, the rogue always drinks the whole potion without giving it a taste first (if unidentified), so the symbol is upside-down since you always drink the whole bottle "i" "bottoms-up."
>>

>>
>incursion
I'm starting to see a pattern; the game goes fine until the deep floors, then it starts to crash when you attempt to rest. If you leave the floor, you can rest again, but you cannot return to that floor that you couldn't rest on because it crashes every time you try to descend the stairs. Interestingly, if you fall down a chasm it's okay.

This wouldn't be so frustrating if buffs didn't cast from temp-max MP so magic you expend on buffs doesn't regenerate until you rest, and if buffs didn't periodically fail because of that mana-bleed mechanic that I do not understand in the slightest.
