Wrong, I spent the entire game with my shitty dagger and leather armor (which was a good idea, since it turned out I had picked up a -3 Whip of Mercy.)

It's short and there's not a lot to do, but it's fun trying to build characters that can 1v1 Eakauri in melee.

My biggest problem with it is that the dev has an ADoM style approach to the endgame; instead of making up new mechanics to increase difficulty like Nethack, he just plops down twenty enemies with big stats and calls it a day. Admittedly, he seems to be drawing a big picture and then filling in the details, so to speak, but in the present, without any details, it's a bit frustrating to wait.

anon, you'll rarely need rCorr in the main game (especially with no Spider's Nest; also, rCorr doesn't even really protect you from corrosion). rPois is nice, particularly for the sBranches, but it's not absolutely necessary even for Snake/Spider. Magic resistance + good AC heavily outweighs the rCorr, rPois and Slay+2.

also, drop those books, you're a minotaur; you ain't gonna be memorizing no goddamn spells.

These are my birth settings.
I used to actually add "always empty arena levels" which lead to some really horrible shit always being in LOS, until I gave up on that.
Every one of those options with a * doubles or anyway multiplies your score (except for coffebreak mode which lowers it consistently).

I'm trying to set a new record for PCB. Not only it'd be the first nightmare mode win, but it'd also be one with a slew of other added difficulty settings.
Also it's a monk.

I thought preserve artifacts lowered score? Always unusual rooms is kinda bugged I think, I was getting ancient dragons and the likes of fucking Mordred at 50ft vaults, so I gave up on it kinda quick.

Doing a DUPZ run atm, which means I do dungeon to 15, then depths to 5, then pan then Zot, without any other branches.

I feel like it'd be difficult in either case, since you'd be starting from scratch (not just with piety but with Invocations) for each god.

TSO would likely be the ideal, but you wouldn't be able to use your demon whip for a while -- plus, since you're doing just DUPZ, you can't just dip into the Crypt for relatively safe piety/Invocation gains.

Again?

Anyway don't dip into the Lair branches as soon as you find them. For cozy mode I like to clear out dungeon, lair and orc and then go for the rune-branches.

Remember to pick your fights and walk away when you're uncertain, and don't forget about your consumables.

I can see why people say ToME4 is horribly imbalanced.

After touching Psionic, I don't want to use anything else. It's just that absurd.
>>
>>166171018
It's weirdly balanced: most classes that are great for normal are utter shit for nightmare and up.
And the classes for insane are ones that you wouldn't expect to be strong in normal, like arcane blade or marauder.
>>
>>166171018
>>166171541
Mind helping me get my bearings in TomE4? The pastebin only gives dungeon directions but there seems to be a lot of shit to juggle that I'm not used to. Like I used to be buddy buddy with some anti-magic dudes, and then I came out of a dungeon and they attacked me on sight, and I'm pretty sure I was only using nature stuff.

Also I'm not savvy enough to know which skills and passives are good and which ones are basically (well-intentioned) traps
>>
>playing as wizard
>get clarity from mutation
>mephitic cloud is now my get outta prison for free as long as you have mana card
>>
>>166171676
There are 3 kinds of overmap dudes: antimagic, adventurer and patrol.
Antimagic aren't supposed to change alliances - if you're "born magical" (start game with magic race or class), you're fucked, otherwise they should stay friendly.

ToME balance is pretty bonkers when it comes to noob traps. You shouldn't invest in offensive skills with large cooldowns, unless they look fucking amazing or apply stuns.
Instantly trash all skills that apply on kill. On-crit can be good, though.

You want to get something to deal damage with (<4 cooldown, usable at all times), disabling abilities (stun, not debuff/bleed/slow) and defenses.
Defenses depend a lot on the class. Marauder gets "lmao no hp death", but archmage instead relies on having so much buffer that nothing gets through. Corruptors' bone shield is considered god tier, though on normal it is just good.

Some abilities look like utter shit, but are instant which makes them god tier instead.
But many abilities look like shit because they are shit. For example, most abilities of the wyrmic class.

Actually it was hilarious. I have two runes now (Swamp and Snake).

Stairs into Swamp:4 were near the rune vault. I think I counted 17 Hydras. They just kept coming.

I'm having tons of fun, in Vaults:3 at the moment and while the whole level hears me, my hp hasn't dropped below 80% for ages.

Angel of pacifism or something like that. Basically you can't use weapons but get a nuke at game start, you win by nuking end boss.
>>
Is there a particular protocol for using rlgrobin? Because I just got a DrMo of Qaz through a Labyrinth in the Lair on him.
>>
>>166188931
Assuming you're going for the easy run, yes. Get to the bottom of Zot, get the Orb, exit through D:1 the way you came in.

Hope you've got elemental resistances, that looked like the one area you were lacking in on your previous char dump. Orbs of fire are no joke.
>>
I have a total of 6 int. Wearing -5 int gloves because they have rF++ and +5 slaying is a REALLY dumb idea, right?

>>
>>166188931
>>166189417
>>166189751
The key things about Orbs of Fire:
1) Highest fire damage in the game, bar none.
2) As an example of how much damage they can do, if you have a summoned ally without fire resistance, it will die from just 2 Fireball hits, guaranteed.
3) As such, rF++ is absolutely needed. The good thing is that the only elemental damage they give is fire, so assuming you're in a one-on-one with an Orb of Fire, you can forego the rest of your elemental resistances.
4) Malmutate is another thing to watch for. Be sure to press "A" and take note of what new mutations you get. You don't need to cure your mutations as soon as you get them (and, by the way, be sure to carry some potions of cure mutation), but when you've got 4-6 bad ones, consider curing them if possible. Take note, though: Teleportitis is the worst mutation and NEEDS to be cured ASAP, since it's almost a guaranteed death for a newb in Zot, let alone Zot:5.
5) The basic guideline for a melee character vs Orbs of Fire is: do a ton of damage as quickly as possible and try to stop their magic if you can. Vorpal, Speed, and Freezing brands are best for doing extra damage, but Antimagic weapons (rare as they are) are arguably better, since an Orb of Fire with no MP is a pushover.

Not quite. Slaying is +to-hit equal to the slaying bonus, and an additional 1d[total Slaying bonus] damage roll after every attack made. It's why slaying instantly makes stones start doing damage and turns aux attacks fom jokes to hilariously effective.

Which is what enchantment is.
a 1d[enchantment] roll and accuracy bonus. Slaying can just get past the +9 enchantment that most levels are restricted at, due to not technically counting as enchantment.
>>
>>166200603

>obsolete [redundant feature] never forget
>>
>>166200749
Alright then. I still think that saying "it's basically extra enchantment," is misleading, since it also applies separately to auxiliary attacks, throwing, and unarmed; 1d[base damage]+1d[enchantment]+1d[slaying]+[auxilarily attacks]+[number of auxilary attacks]d[slaying] is very different from 1d[base damage]+1d{enchantment+slaying]+[auxilary attacks]

No, dragonform is literally the best melee damage in the entire game.

27 UC Aug demonspawn with claws is pretty damaging but nowhere near dragonform.

Races and classes are redundant. New characters should have to manually adjust modifiers for skills. Anything else is bloat and must be removed.

there are three benefits to clearing dungeons in pcb:

- you get a guaranteed stat-up
- most dungeon bosses have some specific guaranteed drop (Meng Huo drops a a random amulet. Thorondor drops a potion of new life. Cthulhu always drops the artifact MHDSM 'Razorback'. )
and of course
- big J, the serpent of chaos, the final boss, has a "summon dungeon guardians" spell, so if you don't kill nasties like cthulu/zeus/vecna you're liable to get them summoned on your head.

I find archmage to be really good. You get 3 solid 10 mana 3 cooldown beam spells within your first few levels and huge variety of spells to pick and choose from. he just doesn't have enough stat to get any mp
rogues and other hybrids, book or otherwise, can have that happen too, because they don't get as high a class boost to casting stat as a pure caster, and one isn't as pressured into a +casting stat race either.

No red boots, but plasteel is pretty nice as is, since running already halves terrain damage. Should turn lava down to 2-3 damage/step unmodded. Cerberus boots are still amazing when the situation calls for them, but they're still situational. I definitely try to build some if I can spare the mods.

Really? I mean, I've heard of people doing that kind of thing, but isn't that a bit advanced for your first time through the level?
At the very least, I'd expect someone to say 'berserker', or maybe even ballistic red armor. You are talking about manipulating the turn timing so you don't get hit, right? Certainly not that whole knife throwing tomfoolery?

It means you should stop attacking for a couple of turns so they have the opportunity to yield. Remember to "strive," for Lawful Good; if you don't you automatically make attacks of opportunity and Xavias/Kysul/other Lawful Good gods will count them against you. Also, the "y," menu allows you to offer them opportunity to yield, and if they don't accept you can kill them.

Just to be clear, it's a joke, not actually a speedrun.

What's happening is that there's a challenge mode, Angel of Pacifism, in which you may not attack, but start with a nuke so that you can defeat the final boss and win the game. Using it before then will only nuke the current level, and you with it if you don't leave before it goes off.

What's going on is that the player begins the challenge, and then immediately uses the nuke, killing himself on level one. The joke of 'you feel relatively safe now', is the message typically used to indicate that you have killed every monster on the current level. Which the nuke indeed does, a split second before killing you as well.

instead of removing him they could just move the decks to imaginary space accessible through the ability menu or something

That's not even hard because it's impossible. You need a lot of small decks so the god abilities make sense. The god abilities need to be scrapped and start from scratch if they plan to bring him back. The only solution for now to fix Nemelex is to remove him.

A maxed out tonberry monk with the pendant of nightmares, the one ring and Vilya does around 2000 FIST damage per full attack.
A swordmaster with the eternal blade and the same setup does 1200 per attack, 2500 if the monster doesn't resist AcElFiCo (everything in the lategame)

I think it's pretty clear that tomboys are the superior race.

If you change race using your racialskill, you can also use all the other monsters' own racial skills, but they don't time out when you change race!
Their racial power alone situationally can be a life-saver (turn into a human at level 30 to grab demonic grasp when facing a charge drainer or grab cult of personality to fuck summoners, turn into a yeek when facing acidic opponents for *acid etc) this one is even better.

Still, I don't think free stoneskin and other crap is worth the 250% xp penalty.

Mutscumming High Night Vision is a pain in the ass without Robust Genetic.
I dislike Carnivore, Heat Dependant and Nausea. Every time I get one of them I'll instantly erase it with purifier.

Fast Metabolism is certainly annoying, but I'll deal with it.
Junkfood Intolerance is actually good mutation since junk food is bad for your health.

>>
Why are oozes legal?

Why?
>>
>>166278320
It's le shit xD and le bad xD, but fun.

It has a ton of noob traps and weird mechanics that are vital to being good. For example, if you don't get the armor penetration mechanics you won't get to double penetrate and will instead get triple penetrated and die.

Temperature mechanics are fun but also broken as fuck (both as in "borked" and "balance-wrecking") and will softlock your game if you aren't careful.

Most of the difficulty is in chargen and leveling, with mutations on leveling being random and thus fucking you over if you aren't lucky and aren't scumming it.

The setting is pretty great and despite ripping off Dune, it is original as fuck.

There are gamebreaking bugs at every corner and the game isn't complete, so pirate it and don't pay for it.

Sometimes when traveling on overmap you are forced to local map because you are "lost". Alternatively you may want to go to local map to find food.

>>166277883
>What is "true death"?
I'm glad you asked.

You see, the "True Death" is a concept I freely took form Planescape Torment. The Dustmen, a faction in the game, believe that every time someone dies they simply reincarnate in another body with no knowledge of your past life (which is simply metempsychosis). The only way to break the cycle of life and death is to completely detach yourself from the flow of the world, by simply un-living, that is to become un-passioned and un-sensing.

>"Passions carry weight. As long as one clings to emotion they will be continually reborn into this life, forever suffering, never knowing the purity of True Death. To achieve True Death you must kill your passions and strip yourself of the need for sensation. When you achieve this you achieve peace, past the Eternal Boundary lies the peace all souls seek".

You can clearly see the roguelike connection. All roguelike characters are born to die. Every win is simply another kind of death, but the cycle is infinite. The only way to break the circle is to cut yourself from it, which is an incredible task.

Once you *win* a roguelike, you achieve the true death in it. By mortifying the flesh and the spirit through infinite deaths and hardships of challenge runs, you come to the point where every death is welcome as any win and thus once your character wins he does not reincarnate, but instead reaches the Gates of Twilight, living anew with infinite bliss.

I'm systematically achieveing the true death in different planes and worlds, first with ADoM, then with DCSS, then *hacks and now *bands.

But really I just like a nice challenge. I just thought of flowering it up a bit.

I can't tell if you're trolling, but the people who've replied to you definitely are.

Current Crawl (0.19 and trunk) 3-rune is usually:
1) Dungeon to Temple
2) Pick a god if you didn't already choose a zealot background
3) Temple to Lair
4) If using a beefy character, rPois isn't an absolute requirement for Lair. Beware of Spiked frogs, but the biggest threats in Lair will be melee-oriented and possibly big groups.
5) Complete the 6 floors of Lair, but don't go into the side branches yet.6) Find Orc in the Dungeon and complete it. You might consider using a scroll of magic mapping on either floor and a wand of digging (and disintegration for pre-trunk) to make sure the first floor is clear before heading towards any big vaults on floor 2. Of course, you don't need to use any expendable items to do that.
7) Clear *most* (or all) of Dungeon. If you don't have good resistances (MR, rF, and maybe rC too), then you could potentially get banished by a unique or 3-4 shotted by a dragon and whatever else might spawn in a nasty vault.
8) Now, back to the Lair branches. If your run has Swamp, do it first. Otherwise, do either Spider or Snake before doing Shoals. Shoals is one of the few branches that is difficult to otab your way through.
9) If need be, consider going through the first 2-3 floors of a branch and then switching to the other one before taking on their bottom floors.
10) With 2 runes, you have some options:
* If you have a wide variety of resistances (especially MR), consider doing the first one and a half floors of Elf.
* Otherwise, Vaults is your main aim.
11) When you've finished the first four floors of Vaults, you can complete/begin&complete Elf if you want, but you'll definitely want to complete the Depths.
12) Now, Vaults:5. Be sure to be buffed before going down.
13) If you get the third rune, you can likely finish the game: go to Zot, get the Orb, ascend.
14) At Zot5, beware of Orbs of Fire and ancient liches. Always try to get one-on-ones.

Pixel Dungeon is such a mess gameplay-wise.
I mean, it's not bad, and it's clearly very streamlined. But various mechanics are either flawed in themselves or when they interact with other mechanics.
Also, the areas being "themed" has the downside of narrowing the range of possible gameplay experience.

When if I eventually start working on my own roguelike I'll be using a regular turn time system with an "extra turn" bar that fills in 2 to 10 turns depending on the monster and is visible in the monster sidebar.
So a speed based system but not as hard to keep track of.

It has multiple locations with no mapgen, where you are dumped into a gray area full of nothing.

The UI is so atrocious it's one of the few UIs I'd consider Skyrim tier. And Skyrim had worse UI than Dwarf Fortress.

It has this weird "there is nothing here but will be" feeling that growing games have.

You should be training Invocations when you feel that your god abilities should be stronger and more consistent. Exactly when and how much will depend on your taste and your choice of god.

>>
>>166298440
basically the only way to know when to use it is to spend all your time on the wiki (or just ask in irc or rlg or some shit) so you know which dangerous monsters have high or low HD
polymorph is only useful against dangerous-for-their-HD shit who will probably turn into something weaker
>>
>>166298440
wands of polymorph are great on things you don't resist that like to be annoying but not lethal. For example, early game, they are a great way to dispose of electric eels, and to deal with the pesky poison seasnake in shoals so you don't have to deal with being fatally poisoned while merfolk whip nets and javalins at you as you get mesmerized.

In other words, if your long-range killdudes is weak, it can help supplement it in certain scenarios, but it's usually not worth bothering with unless you have a free inventory slot.
>>
>>166298715
oh yes and of course despite monster HD being a quite important mechanic for things like polymorph, chance to affect with dazzle/meph, etc, it is a number and so the game is deathly afraid of showing it to the player

Looks like there aren't really any easy xp farming spots in PCB anymore from level 30 to level 50 in general.
In my case I tried to do something exotic, since Nether hounds are squishy and the worst they can do is drain your life but give 7 times the xp of an ancient dragon, but their breath (which apparently caps at 88) is pretty horrible nonetheless since with double the HP they actually do around double the damage.
Farming bile wyrms is completely out of the question, considering I can barely kill ancient dragons. Arena itself is a problem, not just the whole "hey there's a drolem" thing, which can be worked out albeit with some difficulty, but the fact that since I aggravate I aggro everything in a 100 radius and I don't want that to happen when anything there can kill me easily.
Warriors of dawn might actually be good freexp, but the only guaranteed place to spawn them is the maulotaur quest, which is severely out of my reach at the moment, plus even if they spawned around 3 times each and there were around 50, that would net me around 100 K XP, which... is enough to get to level 32 from level 30. Oh goodie.
So, I can get to level 30 rather easily by just doing thieves>warg>dragons and staying away from the ancient ones, but after that I'm at a complete loss of where to go. Not even this tonberry monk, capable of dishout out 300 damage a pop which is a lot more than any other character can usually boast at this level, can actually do anything concrete if I don't find some sort of shortcut.

I need to find the new equivalent of Caaws farming. Not the 555 loot, considering that vaults spawn great loot already, but I need to grab some xp that doesn't kill me outright and doesn't fall back quickly on the scale.

Considering how zealous Christ has been in trying to stop that exact thing from happening again, this is a hard problem to tackle.
>>
>>166307920
It's in Turkish but some words are broken, I assume because the game doesn't support words like ü,ş,ç etc
"Büyük Allah"= Great Allah
"hilekar pitis" = hilekar is cheater, have no idea what the fuck pitis means. I can't think of any word that is even close to that
"seni cezalandıracak" = He(Or maybe she or it, there are no gender pronouns in Turkish) will punish you
Overall it doesn't make any sense to me
>>
>>166308554

>>
>>166308715
I don't think that's actually a word, I only hear children(4-7 ages) use it and I thought it was one of their made up words. I didn't think anyone on the internet that's mature enough to play Nethack would use it
>>
>>166309154

Pıtış is really not a word though, I checked a dictionary. There's the nature quest I guess, but it's tiny and I aggro, so it's death at any level but 50 and even then it's a stretch.

it's dying because nucrawl is nowhere near as fun* as oldcrawl, and new players like yourself generally play nucrawl, find it mildly or not at all enjoyable, win a game or die often enough to get frustrated, then move on to a different genre entirely. Oldcrawl had enough content to draw you in, then from there new players would usually branch out into whatever looked interesting. The general thrives on DCSS content - despite what the autists that shill their various games might tell you - and then other roguelikes sprinkled intermittently thoughout. With Crawl dying a horrible, slow, painful death, so does this general's traffic, which kills the general.

>>166322041
0.16 is where I personally draw the line. Some people draw the line at .10 or whenever it was Mountain Dwarfs were removed. There's been a bunch of removals over the years, gods, races, skills, enemies (though they have been consistent in adding more, that's the one thing the devs to right) branches, ammo types, item weight (though this is arguably a good thing, but it makes Str a dump stat), brands, wands, potions, spells, crippling the remaining gods by removal of what makes them good, you name it, just to generalize a few.

Nowdays it's not much of a roguelike anymore because they keep removing all the flavour and interactions, it's a turn-based procedural death maze with permadeath. It's technically a roguelike according to the Memelin Interpretation, but it's a hollow husk with no soul inside.

So, relatively speaking, how luck-based would you say Brogue is? I admit, it's very pretty, and I want to like it, but it's starting to get discouraging.

Even using chasms and water and bad potions to escape nasty encounters, is there really much you can do when you're down at depth 7, still stuck using your dagger/leather, and without finding a single strength/life potion? Am I supposed to be sticking enchantments onto my dagger, because I was under the impression that was a waste.
>>
>>166330060
Yeah, it's tedious but as a caster you will 100% starve if you don't use chunks. Melee is less hunger-intensive but you will starve at some point, especially if you're berserking alot, so chunks are convenient in that you don't get your run ended due to the RNG screwing you over in regards to permafood generation.
>>
>>166330461
Brogue uses randomness to disguise its shallowness.

Thanks for the input. Another run down, and I more and more suspect it's one of those games where you can mitigate the RNG to a large extent, IF you already know everything about the game.

That is, mastery of the game lies not in mastery of the mechanics, but rather building an encyclopedic knowledge of everything in the game.

Was doing pretty well on a stealth run until a bunch of bog monsters appeared next to me. So I guess, surprise! There are monsters that can hide in bogs AND come in packs AND stop you from moving. If that's the kind of game it's gonna be, I don't think I'll be sticking with it any more.

i think it falls into the nethack category of "hard at baseline but gets easier and easier the more you know the game"

What stat do you folks crank up first on your PCB monks? I've been starting with dex to 18ish, then trying to get strength and con to decent levels, but I'm wondering if it's more effective to max something first.
>>
>>166411085
Please don't insult Amy in the thread.

She is a goddess, and we are lucky to have her.
>>
>>166411231
I usually do str first but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to. It's not efficient to fully max one thing first, because once you get nearish to your cap you get smaller gains (e.g. 18/160 boosting to 18/167 or whatever), so switch which one you're boosting once you notice that
>>
>>166411529
Who?
>>
>>166411231
>leveling stats to 18
but why

3-18 you just get 1 point per level (25% chance for 2 points), but at 18/00+ you get 20-35% of the way to the stat cap

so if your stat has the average cap of 18/100 you will probably get from 18/00 to 18/30+, which is 3x as much value as leveling a sub-18 stat
>>
adding on:

personally I focus on one stat until about 18/50 internal value and then switch to the next one, usually going str > dex > con for melee fightan dudes
>>
>>166411834
I was under the impression stats above 18 tended to have diminishing returns. If 18/01->18/11 is pretty close to 17->18, then that does seems like a better call.
>>
how the fuck do i deal with invisible ghosts in IA?
>>
>>166412539
Stats DO have diminishing returns as they get close to the cap. That's why I stop around 18/50, because past that point you are gonna start seeing those diminishing returns.

ToEF sucks because it's dependent on finding fireproof blankets. Sometimes through bad luck you don't find any. When I was actually good at it, I found that if I had the passage from Darkforge, I basically didn't have to worry until the Mana Temple.

>>
Had a decent run in PCB last night. Lucky Death-Sword. Ended with Nar catching me and doing 60+ damage in a turn on me.

Grinding on floor 1 for levels and egos is good.
Grinding on floor 5 was better.
Teleports and wands are very useful.
Man, FUCK Disenchanter Molds. (Is there any way to get immune to that?)
Orcs are loot pinatas for weapons.
Leveling too fast is... not good.

I know low AC is the name of the game for Death-Swords, but lord it's aggravating. I don't know if I'm doing the whole grinding thing right -- some of the posts on the ladder suggest others gain egos much faster.
>>
>>166419469
>he thinks regen is a crutch
nah, scrolls are the real crutch. free teleports, IDing shit, drawing things in, blowing them up, removing cursed gear, dispelling demons, free loot, if you use scrolls you're casual scum.
>>
>>166421380
the -r variant makes leveling a bit faster too (though much more noticeable at higher levels rather than lower) but if you are using wilderness areas or even just running the usual dungeon route safely you can jam out the early levels pretty quickly, once you know what monsters are worth avoiding or not worth your time.
>>
>>166421515
egos are much more common in the deeps, you generally want (on other character builds too) to be as deep as you can without dying. Like being level 20 and taking down a pack of ogres on d60 is way better than killing the same pack at d15. Getting pips of rDisenchant will help vs disenchanters a lot, but even with two pips you can always, as one anon did, get hit and have of all things your freaking disenchant essence drained...

Is there a dungeon spoiler anywhere? Like, this dungeon has this theme with this boss and this special rule, don't enter without x resist...

Also, is there a specific font people use, or is Courier and Hack pretty much the standard? Trying to get other windows set up (objects in view, monsters in view, message history).
>>
>>166423012
most of them are self-explained by their names. Volcano has a lot of lava floor tiles. Graveyard has tons of undead. Anti-magic and anti-melee caves are, well, places where players and monsters can't use magic or melee respectively.

use 'C' to bring up your character sheet and scroll through it with pgup/pgdown. Use '~' to access your knowledge menu. Use ? to bring up the fairly extensive documentation. Then eventually and start messing with your autodestroyer script...

In 10 minutes anon. 10. Literally sanic.

It's an incredibly high risk/high gain situation, it goes like this:
>tonberry monk
>grab healing pots at shop
>do thieves
>do warg
>reach level 12
At this point you want to grab all the Tele scrolls you can buy and go straight to the volcano southeast of the outpost, since your fists are smoking and you have nothing to lose. Monks of nature get resist environment for free ElFiCo and levitation to go around the mountain.
Killing. A single young dragon will carry you through level 15 and since you do already 100+ damage just by being naked, plus you earn a lot of dosh just by even killing wyverns, which in turn you can Use to buy more Tele scrolls and !Ccw. Getting to level 25 is a matter of minutes with this setup.
The fact I'm playing nightmare mode is just the reason why it works around 20% of the time. I usually get manastormed by something out of Los when I go down to do wargs or die in thieves or teleport next to an ancient dragon at low hp!

Crawl, PCB/PCB-R.

Sometimes people post Caves of Qud, Demon, and IVAN, although you might say they're flavors-of-the-month.

The other two popular roguelikes -- TOME4 and ADOM -- are almost never posted here.

Should I max out my main damage stat (int for mages, str for warriors) in PCB first?

Or is there something not obvious in the game?
>>
>>166446762
Level it first but don't max it out because you get huge diminishing returns on the value of skillpionts.

If you're at 18/90 and the cap is 18/100 you'll probably need 5 or so points to get there, so it's only really worth doing once you have decent amounts in secondary stats like dex for warrior/con for everyone
>>

That's because all non-slex nethack variants are "solved" already (since they're very similar to vanilla), except maybe dnethack but it seems /rlg/ doesn't play that one at all.

You know there's a rest button right?

The amount of time it takes you to rest to regen literally doesn't matter unless you have aggravate or otherwise trashcan-tier stealth.
>>
>>166450746
literally +5 stealth amulet, +3 armor, +3 boots, and STILL only at heroic. It's not like I wouldn't have liked to wear something more useful. But when you have to rest every time you take out an ancient dragon, all that resting gets tiring. It's bonus tedium, just like in Crawl. Then there's the usual spellcaster equipment restrictions, and the notable lack of utility spells (where's phase door, Chris?), and the costly damage spells contrasted with the tiny sp pool, and the papier mache-like hp pool we all know and love, as usual. And for what? Nothing. A traditional caster at least gets some strong spells later on. Timelord gets breath at 35 and that's it.
>>
>>166451894
>all that resting gets tiring

resting for 9999 turns is nigh-instant for me
>>
and it takes like 2 keystrokes

it's a pain in the ass if you're a craft monk or something though because your rest constantly gets interrupted by "your stoneskin runs out. your fire resistance runs out. your heroism runs out. your poison resistance runsout"
>>

Unlimited gold and shops are inherently problematic since that would lead to terribad late game enemy design and a dev would surely have no choice but to resort to adding enemies with stupid pointlessly huge numbers and dumb gimmicks to kill the PC. And I don't get why a lamp for light is still necessary to consume an inventory space when you're just going to get a gorillion of lamp oil in D2 or some shit like that anyway. Pointless bloat is disgusting. Even Elona+ which is known for being bloat is waaaaay better than this shitshow.
