I've seen the trailers and shit I just don't read dev diaries. That's TOO much time investment for only ONE game out of several I'm interested in this year, hell it's only one game out of 2 that I'm hyped for that's releasing in March, technically 3 but Nier's PC version won't be out yet.

I mean from the trailers and E3's and all that, they've pitched "exploring a new galaxy" and "600 years after the events of the Mass Effect Trilogy"

It's only in these dev diaries and interviews that most people don't read or see, that you hear that they leave before the conclusion of ME3 and are completely naive to the reapers entirely, and won't be able to build mass relays so they're going to be stuck in a tiny corner of the galaxy.

No. The enemy race they're introducing are called The Kett. In some interviews they've said we'll be capturing outposts from them so it sounds like they're the native imperial power who is also pushing into the Helius cluster.

Yes, you're a pathfinder for the human ark (Hyperion). You've inherited the job from your pops who is KIA/MIA after the game's tutorial.

It feels like the story of the Mass Effect trilogy is split into two parts that just don't seem to work together.

You have Commander Shepard running around the galaxy and dealing with people and their otherwise minor issues and helping them and stopping criminals and setting things straight and building alliances etc

And then you have Commander Shepard et al trying to destroy skyscraper-tall robots from blasting all known civilizations to bits with big red lasers.

Honestly, ME's main plot (defeating the Reapers) is pretty simple and is far from being the main draw for most people, which is the side stories with the characters and the setting.

Hence why a lot of people disliked the endings, they put too much focus (and unnecessary complexity) in the Reaper stuff and completely sidelines the fates and conclusion of the characters.

Just watched a few trailers for Andromeda.
Why is everyone so negative about it all?

The only things that irked me off the bat was
- the horrible female character face & animation (but thats not new, even ME1, 2, &3 had shitty animations)

- seems like more of a single character experience, I didn't see any team coordinating attacks

I don't know that people are negative on it. If we were negative we'd just shrug our shoulders and just move on to something else. ME:A is something we want to play and it's on the most anticipated RPG list of many sites.

That said, we can be critical. People are upset that we're leaving the Milky Way and throwing away a lot of lore that was built up over several games, novels, and comic books.

Combat animations look like shit. There doesn't seem to be a lot of weight to the combat. The last gameplay we saw had the flame thrower skill featured prominently and enemy health bars not doing much of anything.

UI looks like shit. Skill system is nested through too many screens. Companion portraits look like amateur tumblr shit.

They keep shoving PeeBee in our faces.

Game is two months from release and we haven't had a proper hands on demo of the game's single player yet.

I imagine a lot of this will recede as they start giving us more unadulterated gameplay footage and the hype takes over.

/meg/ I'm having a problem with my pc copy of Mass Effect 1, it doesn't give me the new game plus option so I can't use the load import option for ME2 because of this. I'm using origin.

Well there's a couple of layers to the PeeBee thing, and not all of it is fair. Part of it is her design; the raccoon stripe, the leather jacket with bare midriff, and the return of breathing masks.

The other, IMO unfair, part is tying her to Sera. People see a couple of quirky/shitty run animations and hear that she's irreverent and we're immediately calling her Space Sera. We don't really know enough to make that call yet.

I know with the Sera thing Bioware said they wanted to purposefully make ugly characters, right? Something about trying to make them more realistic by making them less pretty? That doesn't seem to jive with that male Ryder character being good looking. Not sure how you would even force ugliness and make it work right.

But yeah I've totally missed out on all Andromeda stuff. I played ME1 knowing virtually nothing about ME and really loved it at the time. Jumped right into ME2 and was disappointed at the change is style of game (though its sort of my favorite at this point) and then I played ME3 and enjoyed it until the end. The end genuinely left such a bad taste that I walked away from the entire trilogy for a couple of years.

I think it's a face paint type thing, it's definitely not something we've seen on Asari before. I don't mind it much either.

Here's a picture of the breathing mask. In ME1 every character had full on space suits with helmets. In ME2 they decided to do this (pictured) with everyone and leave them in stupid shit like Miranda's skin tight suit in the vacuum of space.

And yeah, I don't think your experience with the trilogy is that different than mine. ME1 was really cool for me, it hit a lot of the stuff I like as a science fiction fan. Then 2 came out and it had that retarded opening followed by a lot of boring corridors.

ME3 was ok, the ending didn't bother me as much because I only ever went Destroy. Point of the series is to kill the reapers, I'm going to kill me some goddamned Reapers.

Here's how I feel about ME:

I hate ME1's gameplay, so I don't play it.

I hate ME3's writing, so I don't play it.

ME2 has neither perfect gameplay nor perfect writing, but both are good enough I'll still play it as a standalone.

Which is ironic, because from a stroytelling perspective, as in, from the perspective of a 3-act story (which ME is 'supposed' to be) ME2 is possibly an even greater fuckup than the ending of ME3.

Dragon Age, especially lately, has some half-baked ideas, cringey dialogue moments, the animation is still terrible and they seem to have forgotten how to tell long stories. But the LORE, fuck, I still beat myself up for buying The Descent day 1 at full price. I knew it was gonna be a cocktease but I am an absolute sucker for a classic fantasy dungeon-crawling adventure WITH A NARRATIVE PURPOSE (not just a Diablo lootfest). I wanted to see what was at the bottom, even if I knew I'd only get a glimpse of it.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat, pretty much. I still generally enjoy 1 and 3, though. The plot, setting and characters in 1 are good enough for me to suffer though the slog of the gameplay and by 3 I'm too invested to not see things to the conclusion. Part that and, well, part guilty pleasure.

ME2 is the most even of all three games. Not great on either side of the spectrum, but most thoroughly enjoyable. And it's better if you think of it as a standalone spinoff rather than the middle chapter in a trilogy.

The Andromeda "trilogy" would probably work best as a collection of loosely connected Mass Effect 2s, honesty. No overbearing plot suffocating the character-driven storytelling. Just a smaller self-contained threat for each game, all of them following the same core cast. Think about it as a TV show, with each game being a new season featuring a new story arc.

Does marksman make it so you don't lose accuracy?
I'm currently using assault rifles and overkill is pretty much useless because while it (supposedly) raises accuracy, the crosshair stays the exact same size when it's active so I never know if my shot will miss or not
At least with regular shooting you can see "oh my reticule is giant, maybe I should wait for a bit to regain accuracy"

Not quite though, Bioware was always afraid of taking the final step and giving the protagonist a set personality. DA2 much like the original ME trilogy takes it halfway between The Witcher approach and the completely player made protagonists of The Elder Scrolls or Arcanum or Baldur's Gate, your role is defined and so is your background but not your character. In Mass Effect you always play as Shepard but Shepard isn't really a character, neither is Hawke. I haven't played DAI but I assume it takes a similar approach.

Now I'm pretty annoyed by this halfway there approach since you're very limited and can't play as an alien or make up cool characters by yourself but you're not given a fleshed out character to play as either.

This. Shepard is overpowered in ME3. In fact, so are all the squadmates. I've gotten through most of the game without firing a shot myself, just to see if it was possible, and I didn't even have to use the OP as shit "give James and Garrus Typhoons/Harriers" cheat. The only way you'll get any challenge is via MP Gold or Platinum with their ridiculous boss rushes.

Kinda helps with immersion imo. From both a gameplay and in-universe perspective, all the enemies in ME3 are a cut or two above the ones in the previous games (with the sole exception that grunts don't get shields that magically proof them against most powers on Insanity). Yet Shepard's team has accumulated so much experience and equipment by then that they come off as positively easy.

I'm not saying the player shouldn't have any agency but that stories written around a character that's not in flux is easier. I think that's one of the many reasons the Witcher games have such good stories, the writers know who the player character is. I think it's good that he's still fluid and that players can influence him a lot though because otherwise it wouldn't be an RPG anymore. The first time I played DA2 I had a lot of expectations riding on it (due to coming from DAO) so the game was a double disappointment
