If I had to figure out how to balance, I think the best way of going about it is to make it a "platform" building. It costs lots of steel but because it's elevated, it can be placed anywhere regardless of the terrain beneath. When you create the building, it will place down the platform which can be just a big hexagon of tiles or something.

I originally just wanted them to fill up the maze for aesthetics, seeing as no intruders actually bother trying to go through there. They're actually surprisingly useful as meat shields, if I send them out with The Cook, because enemies tend to start hitting the swarm of rats biting them. But their main purpose is for me to see how fucked up their incestuous family tree can get. Once I get bored of them I'll just kill off all the females so they stop breeding, and then the males can die in glorious combat, and we'll have a bunch of rat meat and leather to enjoy.

The Psychology mod adds an incident where a thief will spawn on the edge of the map, belonging to an enemy faction, and sneak into your base to steal an item and run away. Your colonists and animals have a chance to spot them, depending on their sight capacity and the light level.

A new update for Psychology just rolled out that removes this incident (and the others) and moves them to a separate mod called Expanded Incidents.

Modderfaggot anon here. I've finished up my mini vanilla clothing mod. I'll upload it to Steam or MEGA or wherever if anyone's interested, I mostly made this for just myself. It adds a sweater, tank-top, insulated pants, and shorts, and they're decently balanced in my opinion. Compare these to the -5.4 F cold on both the cloth t-shirt and cloth pants.

The winter gear requires slightly more materials and work, and the summer gear requires slightly less materials and work.
The in-game models don't look amazing, but they don't look like poop either. I just wanted a few more clothing options to deal with the climate besides dusters and parkas. I might add more stuff in the future once I figure out how to make it, like a tranquilizer gun or a stun-baton that make it easier to capture enemies but aren't stupidly OP like the other mods out there.

I tend to spawn 3000 point raids in devmode every two seasons after year one. When a colony can repel that, it's finished and I start a new one.
Also I tend to start new colonies when the current one is self-sufficient enough that I can fast-forward entire weeks and nothing bad happens without my input.

vegetable garden contains buildable garden soil and tilled soil, you have to research both of them in order and they take fertilizer, which you have to produce like a plant, to build. The fertility is 120% and 160% respectively, which arguably is still a bit OP, but the one which is just a stand-alone 'tilled soil' which a lot of people have just allows you to instantly make 200% fertility soil anywhere with no materials and virtually no effort. Makes farming a fucking joke.

It could be dialed down a bit, but the resources take almost as long as trees to grow and then you need to smelt them at a pretty shit rate. Like, 64 steel leaves goes into 16 steel, meanwhile a single block of mined steel is 35 steel, and you can just send a caravan next door to go mine thousands of it with little effort. The gold and silver I haven't checked out much, but the plasteel is probably a bit too easy to get a lot of, the amount you harvest should be nerfed even though it takes ages to grow. Tilled soil, however, is just clearly OP and fucks balance out of the window. You have literally no reason to even consider using hydroponics ever again, all kinds of soil can just be turned into super soil almost instantly.

Objectively one of the worst mods available. It is a blatantly broken, poorly coded, entirely not balanced at all pile of retardation and failure. The mod author is a retard who doesn't understand math or code, and the mere fact that the mod exists discourages people from making actually GOOD versions of a Glitterworld-type expansion.

Glitter Tech adds weapons that fire at over double the firing rate of either vanilla or any other mods weapons, do higher damage, have better range, have higher accuracy at most/all ranges, AND which set your pawns on fire. It adds bionics which give blatantly unbalanced bonuses, personal shields that are near unbreakable by anything but an advanced colony or their own unbalanced weapons, melee weapons that instantly OHKO your colonists to be downed no matter what. It tries to add interesting technology, but all of them require an absolutely insane amount of resources, aren't typically worth it, and are generally just poorly made bloat. Additionally, the graphics quality of the mod is lackluster at best, and that's before you get into shit like the Tanks that can be butchered for Tank meat.

Lets go through a simple example, shall we?

You install Glittertech.
Orion Corp decides to raid you after, say, a week. Since this has happened repeatedly personally, and I've seen others note it, that's probably about reasonable. The exact time doesn't really matter THAT much, but for the sake of it, it's a week.
You've built maybe four turrets, your colonists have walls for cover, and you have either a killbox or a well-fortified field that you can fight with. All of those are easy to do with relatively minimal effort.
The Orion Corp guys show up, take a few shots, injure your pawns slightly, and because you've got a good defensive system set up, you manage to take them out.
From this point forward, the game is MASSIVELY easier. You have end-game weapons, armor, and maybe even shields. You're now able to pretty much trivialize hunting and raids just off of maybe 3-4 weapons, because between having weapons that massively outstrip what most threats will bring and actually having defenses, you're able to just wipe the floor with basically anything. Probably the only actual threat left to you is massive raids of Wargs, and even that's trivial if you hole up behind walls.

You can achieve the same effect by just making statues and selling them, and buying gold and stuff off traders. You can also just, like I mentioned, send out caravans to mine other locations for all their shit if you want. Tilled soil just trivializes growing anything. If you're playing on a map with a long or year-round growing season, you've got virtually unlimited amounts of anything you can grow. On a cold map, it makes creating underground greenhouses as easy as shit, when usually you would have to use hydroponics. Vegetable Garden does the same thing with that, but you have to go to a LOT more effort to research and get the fertilizer to create the farms, and even then they're nowhere near as powerful.

Good statue takes a shitload of time, occupies pawn with a specific task AND takes resources away. And not every trader buy statues or sells gold/plasteel in sufficient quantity.

Growing on the other hand requires no inpute resource, labour is done by pawn who is growing and harvesting anyway and is constant and reliable.

That was just an example. I've also seen it for sale (among other overpowered GlitterTech weapons) several times from traders. And at an affordable price, too, like less than 3k silver. An AI persona core is worth 4k, so if you get a drone ship event all you have to do is wait for a trader to show up with some Glitter Tech weapons and boom, you just made raids about 10x easier on yourself. Or you could just sell a bit of pemmican to tribals, that works too and doesn't rely on luck.

Sure, it could be. The thing with Glitter Tech raids is that, thanks to being massively unbalanced, they can either be completely impossible to beat, or they can be incredibly easy and give you a whole bunch of overpowered loot. MAYBE you get ones that work out to be balanced, but usually not. The vanilla game and balanced mods tend to work out that raids get sent that are appropriately difficult. They might be somewhat easier, or harder, but you don't just get 'free event that makes the rest of the game easymode because of ridiculous looted weapons' or 'literally no possible way you could have defeated this'.

Blatantly not true. As I've said, you can buy weapons that are 10x more powerful than vanilla, or actually well balanced mod, weapons for less than 3k. A single AI core sale, or selling pemmican and wood to traders a few times, or a few tribals to a slave trader just once, gives you enough to buy a rifle powerful enough to have a single colonist hold off a dozen pirates equipped with standard weapons, with his only defense being a sandbag. If the weapons cost like, 20k each, you could try making that argument, but they don't.

If you start in a forest, wood isn't exactly hard to get. Spend a day having a couple of pawns chopping wood, easily get 1000 silver worth of logs. And if you live somewhere relatively warm, you can grow vast amounts of food, make it into meals or pemmican or whatever, sell it to most traders. I don't know what you're doing wrong, but getting a few thousand silver isn't exactly hard, especially when it gives you a rifle that is super fucking overpowered. You could also train wild animals and sell them if you have a decent animal trainer. Got a good artist? Have them spend a month making sculptures and you probably have enough for an OP rifle. Get a raid at any point? Easily several hundred silver worth of weapons, ignoring the thousands you could get for a few good prisoners.

The drug schedule for that is every 3-4 days, so with five units you should be good until the next raid. Let he fuck them up, wait and see if you luck out - I've repeatedly had pirates drop stacks of like 20+ Luciferium, somehow.

Downing people is much easier with melee weapons rather than bows - use dem clubs, son. A few strong whacks takes people down pretty great - and while it's certainly more dangerous to charge people, between cover and swarming, I've never lost people in a capture run.

The point is to aid immersion by being more realistic.

If you don't want to deal with micromanaging ammo, just make some M16s with their 5.56 ammo (which is the same ammo turrets use) and you're good to go, just use that and you're set.

Any tips for starting on low temperature tundras?

I want to try and do around a -30 average temperature tundra start, with as bare minimum (as little starting food, gear, pets, etc) as I possibly can.

It's kind of a given to have to start out with parkas, I don't think there's any way around that. But the main thing is always the food production.

As far as I can tell, I don't believe there's a way to do an extreme low temperature tundra start without at least having hydroponics initially researched due to lack of any soil, but I'm not 100% sure yet.

Any tips for it?

Depends if you want an unstable but useful combat and inventory system or more content in general. CR is not very compatible, and very messy in general but being able to have an inventory system is great, something I think should be in the base game as well.

I stopped using CR because I enjoyed a number of other mods more but that's just me.

Unless you go out and kill them asap, you can't. Lost several dudes and most of my colony to the siegers as well as a bunch of dudes attacking me. Here's some tips on how to make the game a lot easier for people new and old.
Bury the dead in sarcophagi. It doesn't matter who. Colonist, raider, outsider, your colonists get a +8 mood boost that lasts a day.
Keep one half of the colony on a different sleeping schedule. Have a day colony and a night colony, that way you can have constant production. Instead of requiring multiple production benches, you only need one - Have a night crafter and a day crafter, a night cook and a day cook, etc. As an added bonus, having colonists awake at night will also keep nightowls company, and if you have a night raid your colonists wont be grumpy from waking up.
Your dining room and your recreation room should be the same room. Your colonists will get both "impressive rec room" and "impressive dining room" bonuses even though they're technically the same room. Your gigantic TV and thrumbofur couches will add to the value of your dining room, and those jade stools, golden tiles, and silver sculptures will add to the value of your rec room.
If you have a highly skilled construction colonist and he's not doing anything - Build beds if you're on a forest map. Tons of beds. Deconstruct any below normal, uninstall the rest. Keep the best beds for your colonists and sell the rest to traders. Beds are cheap to make and sell for quite a bit, but they're too heavy to lug around and sell.

I don't understand the hospitality mod. When I last used it, I had 6 beds set up: shared room, colonists stayed out of it when guests were visiting, it was warm and clean. I'd even send one guy to scoop up all the dirt and shit when the alert came up for visitors. Anyway, one visit I would get -10 would not visit again, while the next visit (without changing anything) I'd get +30 would recommend and a stack of weed. I even started experimenting: no cleaning, letting colonists wander... there wasn't a clear difference. Now I know all the factions have different reactions to you, but I just didn't see enough feedback to understand what did or did not make them happy.
It ended up feeling overpowered because I'd (seemly) randomly get a stack of drugs or medicine for doing jack shit.

So this is my colony. Any tips on how to use storage better? My colonists always seem to leave half stacks of stuff lying around instead of filling up existing stacks, and is there any better base layout than 9x9 rooms? I started doing them a while back and can't think of any reason not to.

There's a mod that adds little robots that do it for me.

The builder robots can make normal furniture, the kitchen robot makes normal meals, hauler bots haul things at a brisk crawl, and the crafter robot craft normal stuff.

It was real nice until I became one with Cthulu. Then it got real depressing, like that TV series 'Life After People'.

*The next day my robots pinged on, going about their daily duties as if nothing had happened.

*My prisoner, with no human contact for 3 months, slit his wrists and killed himself. My medic robot could not save him.

*My crafter robot was destroyed by a pack of manhunter boars. No more stone to repair the walls after this.

*My kitchen bot harvested all the boars, making meals that would never be eaten.

*Trade caravans would come by, or visitors. They were unnerved by the lack of people but still sold bricks to my medic robot.

*An infestation was easily repelled after a brave defense from my builder bot walling them in until it got the turrets in place.

*All the bots retreated into the deepest part of the mountain during a siege, the raiders eventually had to run in front of my turrets.

*My medic bot rescued an escape pod survivor, who died during care. I switched him off forever after this.

*My builder bot crushed my hauler after excavating a cave. The builder was switched off.

*The kitchen bot, with nothing to cook, was switched off.

The base game isn't much different from A15, worldmap got a nice new UI and some stuff like surgery got a "rebalancing".
Personaly i'd say download a bunch of mods that you would like to play with and then never stop downloading and installing even more mods as you find them, though there's two modpacks that are worth mentioning:
The Essentials - combines a shitton of QOL mods and content addons, though not completely bugfree
Hardcore SK - Not only adds a lot of content, but overhauls a lot of systems to make the game more challenging with more micromanagement

Yeah, I kinda messed the wording up. I wanted to mean that it's accessible. You can grow cloth in great numbers but it sucks, you can produce great amounts of wool if you have an animal farm but in hot climates wool ain't the best option. Yeah you can hunt for leather, but not in such great amounts that it allows you to craft uniforms to 10+ colonists. Bottom line, devilstrand is everyone's top choice.

Modderfaggot that made the apparel mod here. I'm working on weapons now and I'm curious what kinds of guns you guys would want put into the game. I'm thinking of making variants for guns that don't have any such as the shotgun and the assault rifle, and adding in new weapons like pic related. If I can figure out how to get the code to work, I'll be making a tranquilizer gun for capturing people and animals. Low range, slow to fire, but accurate. That is if I can figure out how to get the code to work, which I'm assuming instead of using the gun_defs I'll be using a blunt_def or something.

Wish raiders and traders were actually simulated on the world map and aware of their surroundings instead of random events. Like raiders chasing a trader so he runs to the player's base, and is aware that the raider is chasing them so deaths are blamed on the raider instead of the player.

I always build a wooden or stone floor around my rich soil growing zone which lets me easily slap down multiple growing zones if for instance I don't want it all to be corn and want some psychoid leaves. The one time I don't do it I delete the whole damn thing.

Oh, that's a hole from one of the Cthulhu mods. It causes insanity in a radius around it that you can see when you've selected it. You can either feed it a prisoner and fill it in or try to fill it in first and get murdered by the eldritch abomination inside that is much, much stronger and more resilient than the thrumbos and I was using Glitter Tech weapons! If it's pretty far away, just let it be as it causes animals around it to kill each other eventually so it's free meat.
