Scared newbie looking for help.

So, how do I get to this station? I have a contract to deliver some goods to it but the neutron star is in my way and it's scaring the everliving shit out of me. (I started playing 10 min ago).

When I jumped to the system it told me I had to escape the neutron stars pull and everything was overheating, I did that but how do I maneover around it? Just frameshift into the blackness of space around it?

It's unreal how unnerving this is for me, I feel a bit paralyzed.

All right so "exploring" in Elite means "scanning planets and stars from supercruise for money". No SRV involved. There's no ultra rare materials only found a billion lightyears away from Sol or anything. You'll never travel out of the bubble for any material.

No one really needs the detailed surface scanner unless they're exploring. If they need materials, third-party websites like eddb will list materials and occurrence rates on any planetary body for you.

There are some rumor that craters have better spawn rates for metallic meteorites (contains rare materials, see image for pattern on the scanner) but those are unconfirmed. Land anywhere and your scanner will give specific patterns and noises to indicate things near you. You'll eventually learn what patterns mean what.

If you're going battleconda, some chaff would be helpful.

Since your're running two SCB go for 7A shields/prismatics. You won't need that many heat sinks, you're only running pulses so those SCB's won't cook you too much. I'd just add more shield boosters.

Don't bother with chaff on a large ship like that you're already easy enough to hit. Use that space for more shields. Also consider military composites and grade 5 HRP's as the anacondas already a slow turner as it is, and the extra armour will be useful if your shields don't hold.

If you've got horizons throw in a fighter hanger, a good npc pilot will help you out with those small ships that stay behind you.

Diamondback Scout is nippy and has a good jump range, it's underrated but you can turn it into one of the nastiest silent runners around, cince it has naturally superior cooling; see Archon Fury's youtube channel for some slick kills in it.

It's bigger brother the Diamondback Explorer is often compared to the Asp , but is more combat oriented, the DBE has a large hardpoint replacing the DBS's two smalls, a better jump range and actual cargo capacity, but sacrifices speed, mobility and some heat efficiency.

I would keep the precision mode, but tie thrusters and SCM to fuel use. Otherwise, I would cut the ships loose and let people fight. This idea of not using fuel while you maneuver just stinks of poor design. If someone is really good at turning their ship and using weapons, they should be rewarded for that skill. To keep things on balance, the best fighters should have the highest fuel consumption as well. This will naturally limit how long they can stay in a fight and give other people a chance when the leaders have to stop for fuel, as you would in a real space craft.

I'm so conflicted about Frontier, the game is a fucking drag to play but they still completely nail shit.
Like the sound design for instance, the FDLs engine sounds amazing, all the surrounding noise when landing in a hub and the impact of the weapons. And also the visual presentation, when a canopy breaks the broken part of the screen didn't show the UI so I had to use the other instruments on the dash to make it there. Was a pretty fucking cool moment, I really wish they could channel their talent into something a more fulfilling game. I guess I could try planet coaster, haven't played any theme park game since Rollercoaster tycoon.

I think from a technical standpoint Frontier are an extremlely talented developer, certainly much more than they are given credit for. Their sound guys are without a doubt some of the best in the industry, both ED and Planet coaster are exceptional in that regard.
It's content and game design where they suffer. Content is just a simple matter of how many hours you can afford in manpower to produce things to do, but game design is something far more complex, with no single correct answer. And where ideally, this shortcoming would be resolved by community feedback, Elite encounters the problem that it's own community are equally out of touch as it's developers.

Federal Corvette, Anaconda, and Imperial Cutter are the "big 3," I guess you could call them end-game ships. Many people prefer smaller ships, though, and the engineers have opened up a lot of build possibilities and somewhat closed the gap between the biggest ships and littler ones.

For instance, one of my ships is a Diamondback Scout with a pair of feedback cascade torpedo launchers, which are capable of one-shotting the shields on any ship. I use silent running to sneak up on people, nuke their shields, and then snipe their modules with a pair of super penetrator rail guns. Works breddy gud.

There are counters. They are very slow, even the slowest ships can outrun them, and their tracking speed is slow, so if you just boost out of their trajectory they'll explode long before they turn around and hit you. ECM knocks them out, and point defence destroys them given enough time. They also have an arming timer on them (I believe it's 3-4 seconds), so you can't just dump them at short range, the target will always have at least a few seconds of warning.

In short, they only work on clueless players who aren't paying attention or don't know how to counter them. Serious pvpers don't use them, they're a gimmick weapon for ganking.

You need to land 4 of them, which is 2 class 2 torpedo pylons worth. Once you've fired them off, they're done until you go back to a station to buy more torpedoes. So, aside from the many ways to counter them, they're also an all eggs in one basket kind of weapon, if they don't work, you're down two weapons worth of dps for the rest of the fight. Our near-term focus is of course on releasing the Alpha. This will consist of finishing up the networking, new UI system, and creating initial implementations for all major gameplay systems. Last October we promised that we would offer a free play weekend for Alpha backers to make up for the delay. We’re excited to announce that the release of our latest patch has gone smoothly and we’ll be making the game available to Alpha backers on Friday, February 27th at 2pm EST through Monday, February 30th at 2pm EST. Please keep in mind that since the Alpha isn’t ready yet this will be a build of the prototype and many parts of the game will be unfinished or even non-existent.

After the Alpha is released and as we look toward the Beta there is a major problem we must address – marketing. Nobody on the team has much experience with marketing and if anything over the last year and a half we’ve all learned that we’d prefer to avoid bothering with it. Unfortunately, marketing is critically important to the success of Infinity: Battlescape so it’s something we’re going to have to master once the game begins to mature.

Through our research we’ve arrived at an estimated cost of ~$10k which is quite significant for a small company like us. If we see a large enough bump in sales after the Alpha is released we’ll attend one of those conferences. Otherwise we’ll save our pennies and look at attending PAX in 2018 after the game ships to retail.

Do you think CIG is going to sit through hundreds of 30 minute videos submitted to them? Do you realize how big video files are? I recorded like 30 seconds in FRAPS once and it was like 20gb or something stupid.

The only thing close to reasonable in your post was having the damage indicator on while being shot through a wall, but it wouldn't work.

All bullets can go through walls not just cheaters' bullets. You can't see their crosshair or their POV flicking from target to target, or record it as definitive proof.

Just want to point out that with good enough server hardware Squad can have 100 players. With fantastic server hardware (and careful mission scripting) the ARMA games can have 100+ players.

Star Citizen has several advantages over these other games when it comes to optimisation, including:

- Dead Reckoning. This is the system CIG have built to that ships which are not under acceleration do not need to tell the server where they are. The server knows where they are until they change vector, at which point the client updates the server.

- Aggressive player culling. If your Caterpillar is fighting a Starfarer, then nobody on your ship needs to receive updates about anyone on their ship, and vice versa. This is super important for raising the player cap, and it is something they have confirmed that they are working on.

- Aggressive projectile culling. Again, a client only needs to know about projectiles which are relevant. Done right this will mean updating fewer players per frame.

- Client-side physics. When a ship explodes into pieces the big bits need to be synchronised, but all of the little bits coming off can be done client side. This is what the new damage model is, and it is why the old damage model (synchronise everything) is so slow.

- Controlled hardware. Squad and ARMA get good player counts on community hardware, which is normally good but there is no guarantee of that. CIG will hopefully be monitoring their cloud servers constantly.

- Server meshing. This is the big one. This was the primary goal of 3.0 when it was still called 2.7. This involves multiple servers co-operating to handle a single system, with each server controlling a zone which scales to keep the number of players the same in each zone. This is kind of crazy and if they make it work then it will re-write all the rules of MMO design.

It's difficult to estimate a player count because different players will have different impacts on a server. A fighter pilot will probably have the most, with a seated passenger having the least.

If CIG do a good job of optimisation then I would expect up to 200 players in an instance, although probably less than half of those would be pilots.

I just think the positives of having a greater variety of viable ships and builds, as well as unique roles for weapons, outweighs the downside of having to buy the expansion to keep up. It's a subscription-free MMO, so they sell expansions. I don't get why that's such a big deal.

There's other special effects than heat, you know. Healing beams, plasmas that confuse gimbals and turrets, long-ranged rail guns that can be used to snipe modules at extreme distances, frag cannons that screen you from seeker missiles, etc. Take another look, there's more variety there than you're giving it credit for, much of which literally does change up the ways you can play in pvp. You can make a bomber eagle, a sniper courier, an alpha burst FDL, a tanked-out gunship, a stealth gank DBS, etc. Engineers has significantly changed up the landscape of viable pvp ships and builds in a way that forces you to change up the way you play depending on the kind of build you're up against.

the Tevarin don't need a language, given their history it's completely justifiable for them to all be fluent english speakers. it wouldn't be surprising if their language was even outlawed under the Messers for a hundred years and is entirely lost. But why do the Vanduul need a languagemore than the Banu, who are exclusively a trade partner? you're going to be talking to them a hell of a lot more, canonically the Vanduul won't even trade with humans, the only purpose giving them a language serves is to yell insults at you except for whatever happens in SQ42.

Also the language stretch goal was a year or more after the kickstarter, all the current races had been thought up by then, and they all got designated for language or not at the same point.

Point defense if you're getting wrecked by dumbfire or seeker missiles.
ECM if you're getting wrecked by pack hounds or torpedoes, though you can outrun the latter in pretty much any ship.
Chaff fucks targeting on gimballed and turreted weapons. No effect if you're being fired on with fixed weapons though.
Heat sinks stop you from cooking yourself if you're using shield cell banks, let you reduce your signature for silent running shenanigans or just momentarily break a hostile targeting lock.
Shield boosters are a good all-round defensive utility until you figure out when and where you need one of the others, but they're heavier and more power hungry than other defenses.

It doesn't make them different, it just forces you to roll a bunch of times until you get what you wanted. It makes them grindier for no reason. My ship doesn't feel "unique" because my grade 5 dirty drive roll is 1% worse than that guys. It's the same upgrade using the same materials from the same engineer, all the RNG stats accomplish is encouraging you to grind for more rolls.

The modifications are neat and really do offer customization that was greatly needed. However, there's no reason to have to amass ALL these fucking tediously-collected materials and data just so the engineer can fuck up the roll and go "WHOOPS GUESS YOU SHOULD TRY AGAIN FAGGOT". And then you have to keep spending materials just to get to the next level of engineering? That shit should have been tied to your profession rank instead of grinding and spending more materials!

The modifications themselves should have been a point allotment system where you only have so many points to work with and you can add points to one aspect of a part at the cost of losing those points in another aspect with a limit imposed on each aspect to keep things from getting too crazy.

You'll probably burn out after a few kills but I guess I understand what you mean. I wouldn't go Asp, I've found that it's only good for smuggling/long range trading. Vulture is a very fun combat ship, I'd stick with that. It has finicky power so I like getting good shields with 2 large dakka dakka cannons, but that's just me. I didn't let Frontier jew me so I don't have Engineers, so I can't really give you much incite into the different builds you can get with shitgineers but I'm guessing you don't want to go through the suffering of grinding for the shit anyways.

Same, I only replied because I'm interested to see what the plan is. I wouldn't mind even just doing hazres/czs, the game gets a lot more fun when you're in a wing, even if you're doing the same stuff that would normally bore you on your own.

You can fly them around a small part of a star system. The flight mode and weapons are functional.

Kinda sorta. There are some basic takeaways like relative size and weapon loadouts that won't change a huge amount between now and release.

Don't grow attached to that notion. Things are changing a lot now because its alpha and they are establishing intital balance, but for the actual PU, Chris is obsessed with immersion and things *feeling* real, part of that is that some thing are just better than other things for simple reasons of design or environment On top of that, few things would be more absolutely destructive to immersion in a "Universe" that certain elements of the universe arbitrarily and instantaneously losing effectiveness because of balance concerns. In the real world user flock to the most effective tolls or the most cost effective tools. The AKM is the mosed used rifle in the world, no one is demanding that it's design be altered so more third world warlords will buy M-16s or FAMAS.

I think its safer to assume that video game balance will take a back seat to continuity of game world and inferior designs will simply fall out of favor/production and be replaced with updated models or new designs entirely.

Turrets are defensive in nature and are a weapon best used on the larger classes of ship to ward off smaller ships that would totally outmaneuver fixed guns, however, the meta doesn't favour them currently with so many ways to break their lock, and small ships can't mass lock larger ones anyway, which means if you can't target the little booger running away is usually an option; unless they're freaky good at tagging you with Yuri Grom's anti FSD missiles like Archon Fury.

Engineering ain't so bad, I'm at Todd Mcquinn's place right now experimenting with high yield long range fixed cannons; I got the projectile velocity on one specimen up to about 1300, which makes it fun and quite viable against anything less nippy than an eagle.
