So, Collectivism is a bad idea -- or so I've been told.

Would Fanatic Individualist/Xenophobe be appropriate for playing as Emperor Space-Bastard the IV?

How about Individualist/Materialist/Xenophobe?

Do I need to go whole-hog with Individualist to avoid factions, or would the Happiness bonus of Direct Democracy be enough to keep my Pops productive?

The plan is to rapidly expand using conquered primitives, then exploit the Horizon Signal, purge the primitives, and re-colonize the now empty planets with my upgraded Pops.

Do other xeno empires hate you as much if you demand 'Abandon Planet' instead of 'Cede Planet' as a war goal?
>>
>>165735303
I always take militarist/xenophobe/materalist and don't have a problem with factions. The "symbol of purity" is a wonderful building that doesn't require power for it's +10% happy. With materialist you can also do the +5%/+10% happy democracy government.

Never got the abandon planet war goal but vassalling an enemy empire causes threat to go into the hundreds making diplomacy impossible.

>if i leave leftover picks after race creation, do i get them back plus the 4 from research?
I don't remember exactly if you kept leftover picks. I do remember that they gave you extra score points.
>Dictatorship to imperium, morale boost?
Exactly, once you upgrade, you lose the -20% morale without barracks, and barracks gets you a +20% bonus. It's fairly easy to get a ~+70% morale bonus with imperium once you have all the morale buildings
>Democracy and filthy xenos
The most you can do is resettle them. Then again, i always played with dictatorship, so i might be wrong.
>Tax rate
It reduces production, up to the % you have set the taxes. By late game, if you're doing it right, you can set them to 0% and still make tens of thousands of BC.
Usually, once you research galactic currency exchange you can forget about taxes because you'll be swimming in cash

Why can't I build a holy site here (Civ6)? The game won't let me build it there. Do I need to clear the rainforest first? What am I doing wrong?
>>
>>165739137
I'm willing to bet that its' because you don't have passage to that area within your borders. If you buy the 1/2 tile for 75 gold right next to it, it should allow constructiion.
>>
>>165739137
>What am I doing wrong?
Playing Civ Vi thats what
>>
>>165737887
I'll agree with you that factions don't even register as a problem if you're taking some measures to improve happiness on your worlds. However, if you're just making sweeping conquests and colonising en masse then chucking them in a sector before they're ready then yeah factions can bite you in the ass, mostly when you're at war with someone.

I've certainly witnessed big AI empires having serious problems with them, especially if they've just come off second best in a war or are already currently fighting one. They'll often lose multiple worlds to independents in swathes if their navy strength has taken a beating.
>>
>>165739137
You have mining so you can place the holy site on forests, since you can clear forests.

You don't have bronze working, so you can't clear rainforests since you can't clear them yet.

That's what I'm guessing.
>>

One of the main complaints about Stellaris is the oversimplification of resources, and the lack of impact special resources have. Alphamod is at least attempting to fix it.
You could just install the standalone Expanded Traits and Ethics mod.

Traits Redux and Extended Traits, plus the government-specific traits from Ethics & government Rebuilt.

Mostly because they more of an extension of vanilla traits and because the AI is not smart enough to make good decisions regarding pops ad their traits.

Individualist/Materialist/Militarist

Good balance, individualist ethos for rulling easily after the occupation malus goes away and materialist for science directorate regime so you can pick your favorite techs at mid game. Militarist always helps ofc.

Other good regimes would be individualist, fanatic materialist Plutocratic Oligarchy (with industrious and thrifty traits) for sheer greed or fanatic xenophobe Despotic Empire for big borders.

>Haven't purged or enslaved a single one because it's too much of a hassle.

>>
>>165776225
Use Collectivist.
No diplomacy minus and you can enslave/purge everyone ontop of having less food consumption.
>>
>>165776350
But then you deal with factions -- and I don't enslave or purge regardless, so it's pointless.
>>
>>165776678
Cuck.
>>
>>165776678
Then youre a beta and purging causes no factions, only for a short moment.
>>
>>165776678

If you dont enslave then use individualist. Thats exactly what its used for.

Xenophobes work sonely on slavery, collectivism works on slavery in the beginning then it reduces ethics divergence and frees everyone (once you have the mind control laser and comissairs) and individualist allows you to rule with ethics divergence easily.
>>
>>165777302

Purging is stupid from an effective gameplay point of view. You are discarding resources (pops).
>>
>>165777585
Sometimes pops can be destructive. Removing that destructive resource can lead to a net increase in resources.
>>
>>165777585
if your empire relies on war and you get some prancing hippies in your planets then you will have problem with wartime resources going down to shitter.
>>
>>165777585
Sometimes getting rid of the troublesome elements, recently conquered xenos with incompatible ethics and without traits to make them worth the hassle for instance is more efficient than wasting time and influence waiting for them to convert to your PoV
>>
>>165777585
>You are discarding resources (pops).
You're discarding faulty gears from your machine, that will end up being replaced by (hopefully) right gears
Also, fuck hippies that complain for everything
>>
>>165777585
But I don't care about the gameplay ramifications of purges. Gameplay is not why I do it.

Besides, you could argue that purges are worth it on the basis that undesired pops actually consume a resource, which is population space. If a less efficient pop is consuming population space, then it might be worthwhile to pure said pop to free up more population space to a more productive pop.

Roleplay BS apart if you dont at least put them all to chains during the early/mid game you lose momentum. You simply cannot afford this when racing against the clock with insanity AI.

Who gives a fuck about politics regarding pixels? You are basically saying: "I will gimp myself because I want to look like a badass edgy tard". Maybe you guys play on normal or something.
>>
I like to use Encourage Free Thought for the research boost.

If I'm not playing as Fanatic Individualist, can I get away with still using Deviants, or would Sedentary be a safer bet? I don't want to encourage pop unhappiness.

Also, if I'm going for a wide empire with lots of aliens in it, I shouldn't make my primary species Pop-bonus intensive, right? I should focus on Leader bonuses like Enduring and Quick Learners?
>>
>>165780803

Usually you take resource traits for early/mid game effectiveness or research/leadership traits for middle/late game effectiveness.

Depends...

I've got them already, so maybe I'm making the right choice.

I'm playing:

>Ethos -- Individualist, Materialist, Militarist.
>Government -- Plutocratic Oligarchy (to get my economy started, then I switch to Direct Democracy).
>Traits -- Industrious, Thrift, Repugnant, & Sedentary.

I had been thinking of using:

>Traits -- Enduring, Quick Learners, Talented, Repugnant, & Sedentary.

But only if Leader enhancements were a better choice than Pop enhancements.

So, how is this remotely a thing? This is just immortal, not even deity. I only had 200+ faith in religious victory playthroughs, and that's in industrial era or so, with tons of cities and all.

Here AI is whipping up 200 faith per turn. At turn 100. It's not like he owns those 16 cities either, he has seven. That's some 28 faith per city every turn. I don't get how it's achievable within this timeframe. I don't get how I can possibly hope to defend when he inevitably starts the apostle spam.

>Districts that usually gain +1/2 bonus for every adjacent district instead receive +1 bonus per adjacent district.

Holy sites get +2 faith per citizen working there. Shrine is +2, Temple is +4. If he has any religious buildings from the religion that can be more. Relics give +8. His civ likes religion and culture iirc, so it's also possible he's running cards that help.

Open up trade with him and see how many relics he has. If you have vision on his cities use the religion lens to see how much faith his holy sites are generating. Could also take his cities over to inspect the buildings.

Also the combat is too cheesy because Speed both denotes the order of turns, the movement distance AND the casting tied to creature turns. Basically who goes first can wipe out 60% of an enemy army. Unless you fight someone like Tazar in late game.

Closed out and might abandon that game because fuckit. I went with random leader (only rerolled if I got an extremely underpowered one or one I already beat the game with) and got Nobunaga. The only civ that was close-ish and did not have a crap ton of bad terrain was the celts, and I couldn't really go after them since the Huns had 6 cities up, the largest army, and were constantly threatening to kill me (they were my 3rd closet neighbor, Siam was second). Ethiopia asked me to go to war with Atilla so I took the 'give me 10 turns' option. We wore him down but that was it.

As for why I might just abandon it, besides what I said, Alexander is on the other side of the continent so he's doing his thing and I can't reasonably get to him because Atilla is in the way, and he's been hostile all game because I owned land he coveted (literally my starting city on the corner of the continent way the fuck away from him).

Stellaris still lacks the option of renaming your Rulers, which sucks, especially if you consider that it's quite normal for leaders to change their official name once they take the throne (even if it's just adding numbers and choosing which of their 6 first names to use).

Okay, but they still need to fix many of the main mechanics for it to even resemble a strategy game. Those mechanics should have been okay at release. Although the next patch looks promising it has no solid base to build upon. At the very least combat and diplomacy should work properly before paradox introduces new mechanics. Without a solid base game I'm afraid this patch/dlc isn't going to solve anything.

I only beat King a few times because I suck and am too passive with military. Another game I tried recently I was the Huns and Poland got too huge and I didn't take the chance to take the out because I declared myself their friend and thought that combined with warmonger penalties would make everybody attack me at once.
>>
>>165846520
Espionage in stellaris would be interesting considering the whole penalty for more population and planet penalties. This means they could change it so the player could decide where to spread their technology, making some worlds "low tech" and their main shipyards and research planets "high tech". Limiting the exposure for spies. A low tech planet might be limited to colony level techs, limited to "makeshift powerplant" and "basic farm" but not count at all towards research penalties, and spies wouldn't be able to steal techs from that planet. A planet set to be "current" level tech would have all the bonuses from research and access to all the buildings, but spies who gain access to that system would be able to pick and chose any tech used. A planet set to R&D would have "cutting edge" level tech and a spy would have access to any known tech.

Stellaris question.

I'm looking at Theocratic Republic (Individualist/Spiritualist) and I'm wondering if it's a better choice than Direct Democracy (Individualist/Materialist).

With Direct Democracy (F-Individualist/Materialist) you don't have to worry about ethic diversion, because your pops are so happy they don't care.

You could do F-Individualist/Spiritualist and get that same effect, plus ethics diversion reduction and a food bonus that would stack with your point in Spiritualism -- but is that worth the loss of the experience gain, the Materialist building, and the bonus to science?

Spiritualist does get you access to psionic technology, but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Your thoughts?
>>
>>165828940

That faction with industrious and thrifty and plutocratic oligarchy for maximum greed. Still good at war and everything.
>>
>>165853515
Would F-Spiritualist/Individualist/Theocratic Republic be a good choice? Would the help with ethics diversion have as much a positive effect on your pops as F-Individualist?

I understand that starting as a Plutocratic Oligarchy to get your economy up and running is a good strategy, and this way you get to do that, because you aren't F-Individualist.
>>
>>165851938

I would be content with knowing the techs used in the opponents navy after the borders are closed, along with the real number of their ships. Nothing else matters much anyway. That way it would be easier to upgrade ships to a direct counter.

By using this mod, but it has an option "no sectors" and gives you the possibility to manage 9999 planets on your own OR let the new autobuild do it for you, but you still have complete freedom.

When you choose edict it costs some ethic divergence, but it can be removed use 7zip to open archive of the mod and right click edit on the edict text file about autobuilding, go to

country_edict = {
name = "no_sector"
modifier = {
country_core_sector_system_cap = 900
pop_ethic_shift = 0.1

and change pop_ethic_shift = 0.1 to pop_ethic_shift = 0
Make sure you just use edit function from within 7zip else u'll fuck compression up.

My counter question would be why would you want the ethics divergence reduction from spiritualist? You already correctly stated that this doesn't really matter thanks to individualism, so essentially all that's left is the food bonus. Imho not really worth it.

>>165875105
It allows me to start the game as a Plutocratic Oligarchy, then transition to Theocratic Republic/Transcendent Republic once I've got my economy running. I can't do that if I'm Fanatic Individualist, and regular Individualist isn't enough to keep your people happy when you screw around with your policies.

It's a kind of compromise between the two playstyles, and it's serving me well in my current game -- it's also fun to roleplay.

I thought the original comparison was Fan Indiv + Spiritualist vs. Fan Indiv + Mat.

But ok, then my follow up question would be: If you're going full anti ethics divergence with fanatic spiritualist instead, why even have individualist in there? The effect will be completely wasted on your main species, and even any xenos you conquer later will only gain 30% reduction with regular individualist, which is ok, but not groundbreaking.

That being said, in the case of stellaris, roleplay always trumps everything as far as I'm concerned. If you like the flavour of it, go for it.

It also helps a lot with diplomacy.

Individualists aren't seen as threatening as the potential-slavers, potential-purgers.

The Individualist ethos gives a nice buffer before the F-Spiritualist turns them to my Ethos, and the happiness bonus granted by Theocratic Republic is also very nice.

The empire runs very smoothly; this game is going very well.

>>
>>165899295
I've presented my reasoning, and it's working out well for me so far -- better than it did when I was playing as a Direct Democracy with F-Individualist and Materialist.

The Individualist here gets my a buffer-zone when I conquer, and the Theocratic Republic gets me a happiness bonus as well as the Galactic Stock Exchange building.

F-Spiritualist brings xenos to my Empire's way of thinking -- which makes them happy -- and opens the way for psionic technology.

It works better than you'd think.

I've tried playing Divine Mandates, and I end up with repatriation factions and neighbors who hate me because they're worried I'll purge someone.

All of them are well worth the cash so here's a rundown of each:

>Shifters
Less of adding a mechanic and more drastically improving on an existing one aka winter. Pearls and shrine of auriga are great additions, but unfortunately the Allayi suffer a lot when trying to keep up (you know a faction has it rough when they're preferred victory type is fucking quest of all things, and don't think you can rush it either you need hyperium for that shit).

>Shadows
Espionage mechanic is great and adds plenty of creative ways to win wars, especially for factions with high dust income to purchase spies (upkeep is reduced while infiltrated by a fairly hefty amount). Forgotten are fun as fuck with their research mechanic but its slightly painful to play against AI since they tend to research shitty techs.

>Tempest
Basically turns the formerly barren oceans into a terrain type all its own, controlled with neutral camps rather than cities. Fortresses offer a multitude of bonuses but while they're easy to gain they're not so easy to keep if youre at war. Morgawr are super fucking cheeky and its great. You're not the best expander in the world but you've got plenty of tools to keep everyone else fighting themselves and not you.

Guardians is pretty good too, and Echoes of Auriga is a must buy for that sweet ass soundtrack.

All in all they both provide plenty of stuff to the point where you really can't compare them as they're all pretty good quality. Just get what you think you'd like I guess.

It's not so strange.

Civ6 is over a requirement threshold so not as many are able to play and stream civ6.

As for the biggest civ streamers, a lot of them are part of a sub community started in civ5 that uses specific mod that has a different meta from the base game. Also a custom map script which means they play on the same type of map all the time. The group almost immediately got a new mod to change the way civ6 was played to add increased tech cost from #cities, since that's what they were used to play with.

Has Stellaris changed much since release? I played it back then a bit and thought it was a good start but needed more polishing/content adding.

Also is vassalizing the AI still as stupidly overpowered as it used to be? Seemed like you could snowball ridiculously fast into a massive death ball of AI followers using this strategy and wasn't much you could do to counter it besides create your own death ball.
>>
>>165909802
>Has Stellaris changed much since release?
not really, improved sector AI, improved warscore, added some new quest chains, added new portraits, added some boss type enemies roaming around the galaxy but the guts of the game hasn't really been touch, that being diplomacy and combat. Corporate empire. Ethics&Government Rebuild is highly recommended since it adds corporate government types.

Focus is on making profit, expanding the company and protecting holdings and interests. Races that can prove useful to the company are to be integrated, races that seem useless are to be enslaved or exterminated as seen fit. Fanatical purifiers and other empires that are keen on destroying their neighbors are to be eliminated since they're bad for business, avoid joining a federation if possible.

But aren't the spiritualists also the same people who end up reaching that state through tech? So basically, the spiritual ones with their strong beliefs in gods and spirits are the only ones who find out that gods are really just a highly technologically advanced species that managed to connect to a different plane of existence, by doing literally the same thing.

So only the gods know that there aren't really any gods.

I can imagine using some exterminatus device to destroy all life on the planet, but not BLOW UP the entire planet.

Destroying a planet isn't that difficult. The scale is ridiculous but considering the rest of the game it's nothing really.

I dunno, I just can't accept it for whatever reason.

I prefer the idea of forcefully vassalizing someone, and glassing a planet each time they betray you.
I just hope it'll be something amazing that really has an impact, rather than just "you blew up a planet, you get -99999 diplomacy with everyone".
>>
>>165922478
Probably because it is literally beyond the scope of human comprehension. Like, did you know that when you fall into a black hole (let's assume it's a supermassive one so almost no tidal forces at the EH), reality literally splits in two? Did you know that it's not that you 'can't go fast enough' to get out but that time and space become distorted enough that 'out' loses meaning?

It really isn't difficult.
It takes about 3-4 days to go from the Earth to Neptune at "cruise speed" in stellaris, which implies you're moving at anywhere between .05 and .07 times the speed of light. Presuming that a battleship is the size of a medium-sized asteroid (10-20 km), slamming one into a small terrestrial planet the size of say Mercury would do some very significant damage; probably not enough to blow it apart completely, but enough to render it destroyed for all practical purposes.
Presuming that in warp drive, the ship moves at an effective .5 c (which I'd say is reasonable considering the size of your typical bubble as depicted in fiction), it'd certainly simply blow the planet apart entirely.
Gas or Ice giants are a different beast entirely.

>Presuming that a battleship is the size of a medium-sized asteroid (10-20 km)
I seriously doubt that any battleship would be that large.
It would be more reasonable to attach asteroid transporters/thrusters to an actual "medium-sized-asteroid".
But this nitpick doesn't really change the argument.

>would do some very significant damage; probably not enough to blow it apart completely, but enough to render it destroyed for all practical purposes.

You would have to fling an entire moon(at high speed) at a planet to even have a chance of blowing the planet apart.
Shooting an object (with a mass of previously mentioned asteroid) at that speed into the planet, would do nothing comparable to "planet destroying". It would be like shooting at a cardboard sheet with a gun - the object would go cleanly through. In the case of a planet, it would cleanly penetrate the crust and would be absorbed by the layers beneath the crust. If the speed is higher, the object might come out from the other side.

As far as implications for the inhabitants are concerned - it would be the apocalypse. However, exactly the same outcome (exterminating the population) can be achieved by simply "glassing the planet" with more easier means.

In the end, the planet would not even be destroyed - its habitability would just be shittier. One could practically send new colonists onto that planet in the next day - but this time around, they would be confined into dome cities and thermal protection suits. Even when planet is blown apart with such energy that it actually disintegrates outwards, this energy must be large enough to send the pieces away faster than the planet can reform again. If that is not the case, then the chunks of the planet will just eventually fall towards the centre of gravity and as a result will reform the planet - albeit in the form of a giant blob of liquid minerals.

TL;DR - you are talking about terraforming the habitability into shit instead of planet destroying.

No.

>You would have to fling an entire moon(at high speed) at a planet
Consider the speed at which things in the Solar System move. The moon may have been created from a sliding collision from a planet-sized object hitting the Earth at a glancing blow. The Earth orbits the sun at about 30 km/s; let's just pretend that the other body was moving completely head on so the relative velocties were 60 km/s.
I assumed the velocity was 0.5c = 150 000 km/s. Even using newtonian mechanics, the kinetic energy of a 15km sphere with density equivalent to earth moving that fucking fast would be equivalent to something the size of Mars (with Earth-tier density) slamming into the earth at 30 km/s - more than enough to blow it apart, at least into a rubble pile with significant mass lost. Considering relativistic effects, it'd be significantly higher (although not by an insane amount). Mars is almost twice the radius of the moon and about 7.5 times the volume.

>It would be like shooting at a cardboard sheet with a gun - the object would go cleanly through. In the case of a planet, it would cleanly penetrate the crust and would be absorbed by the layers beneath the crust. If the speed is higher, the object might come out from the other side.
That's not what would happen. Don't try to analyze physics on this scale with your normal analogies. To begin with, flinging a rock at 50 m/s into dirt and at 50 km/s into dirt will allow it to penetrate roughly the same depth - its own height. It will not penetrate much further. Secondly, at the velocities we're talking about, you will literally initiate nuclear fusion on impact, and also will dump the kinetic energy into the planet proper - although a huge line of ejecta will appear on either side and around the 90 degree mark as the shockwave and countershock collide. I don't think it'd be able to entirely blow things apart, but it would get turned inside out and a lot of mass would be lost.

In stellaris do you pretty much always have to rush colonies?
I had a primitive species nearby, so i invaded and enslaved them, but they have a mineral production penalty which sucks. When is it better to just build an outpost instead of a colony? What type of tech do you typically need to destroy another empire? will mass corvettes do the trick?
>>
>>165936120
>In stellaris do you pretty much always have to rush colonies?
Well, getting colonies means you expand your borders without having to pay +1influence/month
>When is it better to just build an outpost instead of a colony?
When other empires have worlds you want in their borders. Then, you just build an outpost as closest to them as you can, and then try to colonize all the shit you can between you and the outpost.
>What type of tech do you typically need to destroy another empire?
It ranges from "nothing" to "everything + FE tech", depending on their firepower. Recently appeared civs can be annihilated wihout even bothering to build extra ships. Half-galaxy spanning civs can be tougher to destroy.

influence_cost = 150
potential = {
nor = {
has_modifier = "population_improved_ban_auto_migrate"
has_global_flag = disable_migration_module
owner = { has_policy_flag = migration_not_allowed }
}

planet_migration_all_pull = -0.7
pop_migration_speed = 1

Yeah pretty similar, but everything is simplified and there is a lot of mindless busywork doing things like moving scientists around. It's mostly good for roleplaying.

Define wrong? I mean technically, a ship made of solid iron the size of Neptune with a shell about 10 km thick isn't too heavy to support itself if you construct it correctly.

Earth diameter is 12k km.

Any game where ship is visible when orbiting a planet ( unless on max zoom ) is wrong.

Over 12 000 kilometers across, over 6 000 in radius. If everyone on the planet lined up at the equator and started running at Usain Bolt speeds for an entire day, the day would be shortened by roughly 0.12 nanoseconds, and would go back to normal once people stopped running.

>>
>>166011606
He's pretty much on point though
To humans, while I think a kilometer isn't that hard to visualize, things like "Ceres is 1000 kilometers across" or "The mass of Jupiter is 1.9 * 10^27 kilograms" or "Ten billion people running at world record speeds can't slow the world down by even a fifth of a nanosecond" is simply beyond actual comprehension. The escape velocity from the Earth is 11.2 kilometers / second. This means you're moving from the depths of the Marina Trench to a height twice as high as the Great Pyramid in a single second if you're moving at escape velocity. The world itself orbits the Sun at 30 kilometers a second; the entire earth moves completely from its current position in just under 7 minutes. Earth is a PLANET, and a small one at that considering it's at least rocky.

I don't know what you want. We've seen stars get occluded by something passing in front of them regularly, demonstrate the 'gravitational wobble' that you'd expect, everything. We even have direct visuals on them (just not visual spectrum). What more do you want?

it's a picture of a disc, yes

that's all it is, a disc, could be a cylinder, a sphere or a cone too for that matter, depending on the angle of view, which we don't know

there is nothing to say it's particularly a protoplanetary disk which cannot and has never worked in simulations

but yeah, this amourpheous low res picture is proof positive of a very specific model that can't even function mathemathically, and if you don't believe it you must not believe in telescopes amirite

I mean your objections have no basis at all, at least this one makes sense. It supports the existence of the Kuiper and Asteroid belts, explains the weird CD-track look of the disc, and does in fact work mathematically. It also makes it so that the Sun isn't somehow special for having planets, when everything else about the Sun and its system seems rather plain and unremarkable - besides the concept of us being next to it.

>>
>>166016441
I don't see the problem with that, there are specific biological features associated with "mammal" or "reptile" and if an alien species matches those fairly well it makes sense to use the term to describe them.

Theoretically speaking, if an alien species had a similar ancestor in the sense that the prokeryotic cells they evolved from matched up with ours exactly, yet were created on two different planets from natural forces, are they related to us or not?

I guess another way to ask would be if we had significantly advanced technology to essentially "assemble" a human embryo from raw material components such that the finished product was indistinguishable from the genetic map of another human, would they technically be twins? Would we need to create an entirely new term to come up with such a relation? What if instead an alien, biological organism was modified during its lifecycle to take on the physical traits of a human?
>>
>>166015485
This is basically a needed buff for empires that don't have access to purge policies. Conquering without purges Fucking sucks unless you plan to actually utilize the pops that come with your newly ceded planet. This fixes that problem by letting non purgers basically evict pops you don't want.

>Inb4 you still need access to purge policies, making it redundant.
>>
>>166017502
>Would we need to create an entirely new term to come up with such a relation?

yes, clone

if there is dna-based life out there it must be related to us, probably via panspermia
>>
>>166017502
>Theoretically speaking, if an alien species had a similar ancestor in the sense that the prokeryotic cells they evolved from matched up with ours exactly, yet were created on two different planets from natural forces, are they related to us or not?
They would not be, even if convergent evolution forced them to be similar in likeness to Earth life, the likelihood that it would have similar DNA to within any significant percentage would be statistically impossible.

>>166017594
>if there is dna-based life out there it must be related to us, probably via panspermia
Not necessarily, if DNA can form from natural processes, then even if Earth life is a result of panspermia, then it stands to reason that DNA could arise multiple times, so two creatures could use DNA and not be related.

I'm struggling to understand how you think this means that you can put aliens in Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya.

I'm reading that the things in Eukarya are more related to eachother than any other group, while archea and eukarya are closer to eachother than bacteria. I don't see how that they've used distinct rna markers to differentiate bacteria and archea means that you can put aliens into eukarya.
>>
>>166019507
My bad, I think my confusion was that Taxonomy isn't solely about relation between species, I was thinking in term of genetic relation.
>>
>>166019779
Because it has to do with cellular structure. If an alien has eukaryotic cells then there's no reason not to put it in eukaryota, since the literal only requirement of being a eukaryote is to have eukaryotic cells.
>>
>>166019885
>The three-domain system is a biological classification introduced by Carl Woese et al. in 1977[1][2] that divides cellular life forms into archaea, bacteria, and eukaryote domains. In particular, it emphasizes the separation of prokaryotes into two groups, originally called Eubacteria (now Bacteria) and Archaebacteria (now Archaea). Woese argued that, on the basis of differences in 16S rRNA genes, these two groups and the eukaryotes each arose separately from an ancestor with poorly developed genetic machinery, often called a progenote. To reflect these primary lines of descent, he treated each as a domain, divided into several different kingdoms. Woese initially used the term "kingdom" to refer to the three primary phylogenic groupings, and this nomenclature was widely used until the term "domain" was adopted in 1990.

terrain might not be a factor in space, but they could make another system, as long as it is quick, decent looking, and a little bit tactical, hell as long as it's quick I don't even care if it's just stats with no tactics, better than autoresolving everything, fucking boring

How is it unbearable if there's an option to just not watch it? Its not like its holding you hostage for 3 minutes against your will.
>>
>>166028398
Not going to talk about ES2 since I havenĀ“t played that yet, ES1 combat is trash though. Hope it is not a exact copy.

>autoresolving everything, fucking boring
>fucking boring

I don't want to see the strategic map only all of the time with no action ever, little icons and numbers and nothing else

I want a battle system, I just don't want that one, because it sucks and is worse than auto
>>
>>166028859
Its not an exact copy, but fairly similar.
Combat in detail is autoresolved which the devs really want to keep, so hopefully they add enough strategic elements in the setup phase to counteract that.
New update's a good turn towards that, but it still needs work.
>>
>>166028945
it's great that the system is the same whether you play it or autoresolve it

but even in ES1 you can gain an advantage if you react or feign by changing your cards mid-battle, so even if you don't want to you can't skip everything

>Dude this spectator system sucks.
>Don't watch it then?
>What? No thats a terrible idea I don't want to just look at a map all game lol.
>Repeat.

I get what you're saying, but it feels like you're deliberately whining about a system you choose to continue using even though you dislike it.
Make up your mind man.

>>166029115
I suppose, but there's still potential in ES2 for feigning by employing different cards or composing your fleets differently.
Its still like that, just less reactionary and more drawn out over several battles.

So is 1.5 Banks the update that redeems Stellaris?
>>
>>166029508
there is nothing on the roadmap to fix war, so no, it will never be redeemed

stellaris 2 might be good
>>
>>166029508
Maybe if they didn't charge money for features that really should've been in the game at launch.

I'm not though.
>>
>>166029617
They aren't.

All the major features are released as part of a free patch -- 1.5.

There's some flavor stuff (the different types of purging, for example) that's available as part of an as-of-yet unnamed DLC, but that's not essential.
>>
>>166029268
if the lenght of the battle was decided by, say the size of the fleets, that'd be better too, so you get a longer view in the big cool battles, and only a short stint when it's a stomp or a few scouts
>>
Are we going to get the ability to choose our species' clothing regardless of species, or our species' background regardless of ethos?
>>
>>166030581
That would actually make a ton of sense to have battle durations scale with the fleet capacity of either combined fleets or just the initiating fleet.
>>
>>166030772
by the smallest fleet, so a few stragglers being crushed by the main force won't last long
>>
Is Stellaris Zero any good? I don't feel like using a million bloat tastic mods

According to Amplitude the Horatio are designed to be a lategame powerhouse through assimilation, so it should be interesting to see it in action.

How is it ? Did the release do something cool ?
I kind of want to pick it up ... are there mods for that font :3

I'm playing the full release now. It's still the same game it has always been, in that it feels like the devs had a look at MoO2 and said "I can do that". But it's fun.

There's no huge changes, but there's a good deal of quality of life stuff like a better system for ship refits and better UI for ship design. And they've finally finished all the tech, which means there's a bunch of end game stuff I haven't tried yet. So that seems fun.

And no, you can't do anything about the shitty font.

You can always pirate the dlccs for paradox games

the main problem was once you beat it once, there was never EVER a reason to play it again.

That and its unbalanced as fuck (in the players favor) the ability to make outposts anywhere, at any time just fucks the AIs shit up!
