>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy,Cookie Clicker, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indies, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

Replaying Rayman Origins. Nowhere near as good as the first game, but pretty good nonetheless.

This level though is 11/10:

I don't normally like swimming levels, but this one nails it with the atmosphere.

What burned me out on Rayman Origins is that when I got to the hard worlds I didn't like the reuse of the world themes.
>>
>>165693812
They tried to spice them up a bit, but I hear you. The game honestly had more levels than it needed, and it kept the good ones hostage for too long. The first level set of each world is just too easy, a single introduction level instead of something like 5 would have been enough.

If you like turn-based RPGs, yeah. The enemy variety is really nice, plenty of gear to mix and match, a wide range of skills (and a grinding system that means you don't need to level up to unlock skills and the like), humor is hit or miss, mixture of self-aware and silly.
You also get an achievement for playing with Natalie's tits.

It is a good idea. It makes the game more of your own just like creating your own sounds, OST and tileset.

Maybe if your game is low on words.

As your word count goes up, the more important it is to just have a good clean readable font (worth dropping pixel purism for).

What was your favourite indie game of 2016? Mine was the Witness. It was a giant sandbox of interesting iterative puzzles. I didn't care for the "narrative" of the game though.

Way back when Haven and Hearth 2 came out and went P2P, somebody was working on a legacy H&H private server (reusing the existing assets). Does anybody know if that was ever finished?

>>165706675
Well, pixel fonts are kinda assy for readability. Making smooth fonts is a lot bigger of a time drop and your end result will likely be worse than the far more refined options (made with a base of many years of typography knowledge) out there.

Pit People, while enjoyable, exemplifies a myriad of things wrong with the modern Gaming Industry.
>Lazy art and artistic direction
>Releasing unfinished games for money, a form of beta testing using public resources, but they pay you instead of the other way around
And in addition,
>Reusing Stamper as the narrator
It's alright.
>>
>>165716280
What I do for my game is render the fonts and other graphics separately. Pixel art gets scaled up 1:1, and multiply the font's size by the same zoom.

Naturally, drawing a font at a low size/resolution and then upscaling everything is going to look assy.
>>
>>165716310
"Lazy" art allows more time/resources to be dropped into devving interesting gameplay. I dunno about this case since I can't be assed to check videos, but such graphics also allow for far more interesting animations since the time to draw new frames is so low.

>>165717190
Well, something to consider is that Behemoth isn't a 1-5 man team where artists inevitably also work on game code. This is a 9 man team where everyone's roles are clearly defined.
The artist is just a lazy sack of shit who instead of doing a pile of classic hand-drawn animations like Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers, relies on overusing Tweening fucking everywhere.

on the Monument you know its crowded with pilgrims, so I thought If I wanted to level up very quickly as taking the souls of them would be very profitable. When casting Heresy, a narration says you feel a malevolent force coming from the monument, knowing what u were going to do and proceeds to destroy you instantly. with change of music and all

I lost on purpose during this battle to see what would happen. It seems to be pretty hard to actually get a game over from losing a battle, although if you fail certain battles, you can't get the best ending. In this case, you lose out on the ability to conquer Mexico for Spain/ally with the ruling power to be a trading partner of Spain.

I have a thing for edgy lolis, so I'm a little disappointed she didn't actually kill my guy. All that talk about being happy to kill me for all the shit I pulled and she pussys out at the last second?

It's a very good game, but there are some issues with how they handle the followers.

There are certain "events" that can happen, which pick random characters in your party to use. For example, two of your followers can fall in love with one another. In my case, the girl was a pious nun, who one would not expect to openly have a relationship with someone. Another person reporting having an event where someone in your party was having a romantic tryst with one of the citizens, to the anger of the person's family. Of the random people it can pick, it can pick the girl you married earlier in the game.

The game has two characters you can recruit, one loyal to the Aztecs, one anti-Aztec, and they will leave your party if you support the side they don't. However, they don't have any issue with you supporting the side they like and THEN killing the leader of the winning side so you can conquer the land for Spain.

Despite these problems, the event system is a cool one, and I hope they refine and improve it for their next game.

I'm sure it'll go on sale sooner or later.

When it comes to surreal games, how far are you willing to go?

And then there are games like Steward HK Lar Lover's games which are fever dreams in game form made by an actual lunatic.

About to start Underrail and was trying to decide on a starting build, was hoping someone could give me some advice.

So far I've got -
7 Dex, 7 Perception, 10 Will, 7 Intelligence

Feats: Snooping (with the 7 perception to be able to find all secrets), Undecided on the second feat

Skills: 15 Hacking/Lockpicking/Thought Control/Psychokinesis/Metahermics/Persuasion, Undecided on last two skills

General idea was a pure Psy build with the ability to find secrets and lockpick/hack.

For the remaining two skills I kind of wanted to go Traps or Biology or Tailoring but wasn't sure how good they are/if I need dodge and evasion for this kind of build, I was considering Pack Rathound or Paranoia for the last feat
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5urvuyk3cVo
>>
>>165745065
[Persuade] In that case, I have a huuuge list of bugs. My list is very huge, very huge indeed, yes. But I will not let you see it, no. Jelly, huh?
>>
>>165745569
Cometh standing rathound garbage. Train is.
>>
>>165745276
7 Perception just for the sake of finding secrets is a bit of a luxury, they are rarely good enough to be worth it. Although it will give you decent detection, which is not a bad thing. Snooping though I can't really justify, unless you are hell bent on truly finding every secret on your own. You can temporarily add +3 to your Perception any time once you have access to Junkyard Surprise and Adaptive Goggles.

That being said, you are psi. You can afford basically any luxuries you want as long as your Will is high, your skills are maxed, and your spellbook is full.

You don't necessarily need Dodge and Evasion, but you do need some form of defense. Stealth to strike first, Electronics to craft a good shield, Mechanics to craft a good armor (although you dumped Con, so I don't think this is what you want), Tailoring to get Dodge/Evasion/Stealth bonus, high Agi and Sprint for hit and run tactics, and so on. The possibilities while not endless, are many, and you can go for any of these, or a combination of them.

Traps are great. Biology and how much you need of it depends on your build and whether you are Tranquility or Psychosis. Tailoring is pure gold.
>>
>>165746427
>"Traps are great."
- /indie/, 2017
>>
>>165746427
My list at the moment picks up some of the things you said, I read you don't actually need to "max" every skill to get most of the effect out of it.

I'll drop snooping too if I can just raise it later with other items and go back for the secrets so currently my build looks like this:

Dex 7, Per 7, Will 10, Int 7

15 Hacking/Lockpicking/Biology/Thought Control/Psychokinesis/Metathermics
10 Electronics/Tailoring/Persuasion

Feats: Doctor

I was mainly interested in traps for the detection/disarming, I'm not interested in using traps at all

How does it seem to you now? And any recommendations on another feat? Can I save the feat point and pick something later?

Thanks anon too
>>
opinions on end roll? is it worth playing?
>>
>>165746745
Nah, you can't save the feat point. Even if you put off leveling up until you hit another level, you will have to do the two level ups in order. So no cheating the system.

If you wanted traps just for detection/disarming, you don't need the skill. Your Perception will be enough to notice them, after that you can either just not walk into them (your character will automatically walk around visible traps, unless there is no other way to proceed to where he has to go) or for some traps blow them up. You can always rely on good old Fireball to remove unwanted traps that can be blown up.

I'm still not sure about that Biology, especially in the maxed tier. What do you need it for? Focus Stim (50) and Trance are essential if you are Psychosis, but you'll hit the required 70 by at worst level 10, and they are mostly useless for Tranquility. Psi Reinvigorator (60) is good, but depending on your choices you might not find much use for it. Adrenaline, Morphine, Psi Boosters and hypos are plentiful even without crafting. Jumping Bean you can get for 35, Bullhead, Irongut, Aegis are luxury that can be very situationally useful. Regenerative and Supersoldier are fantastic... but do you really need them?

You'll hit the soft cap with Hacking by at worst level 19, with Lockpicking by around level 16.

The big question is still whether you are Tranq or Psycho.
>>
>>165747807
This is going to be my first playthrough so honestly I'm not entirely sure, being able to make healing items and "extract useful substances" from monsters sounded useful to me and it let me unlock a feat that actually sounded decent for the start because none of the others stand out to me at the moment.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by Tranq or Psycho but i'll guess you mean either the "Tranquility" or "Psychosis" feats. Psychosis doesn't appeal to me if it's going to create psi cost management noticeably harder with consumables.

What would you suggest I tweak in my build?
>>
>>165748123
Well, I don't want to talk you out of Biology or anything, but as Tranquility, and someone who picked Persuasion I'm just guessing you won't get much out of high investment.

Still, nothing wrong with starting with 15 in it, and putting some more points into it later. Good for emergency. And anyway, you can decide for yourself whether you want to continue investing in it later. And again, you can afford luxuries.

I'm not really sure how to tweak it. Tranquility psi is one of those builds that just werks as long as you know how to protect yourself, and for the most part Electronics/Tailoring is going to take care of that. Personally I like moderate Agi for Sprint and some D/E (say 50/80, and then Infused Siphoner armor to make it useful, and Black Cloth+Padding and tabis for Stealth) on my Tranq psis, but it's just a personal preference.

So, I don't know. Go with what sounds good to you. And never forget that Adrenaline and Morphine are your friends.

Oh right, one more thing.

To get the most out of Tailoring, you will eventually going to need a small investment in Mechanics. No need to get it higher than effective 35 though, and no need to hurry. When you have some points to spare around mid-game just drop some of it into Mechanics. You'll need it to work with Super Steel fibers.

As for starting feats, it's true that there's not much for psis at the start. Doctor is a decent choice, Paranoia would also be a good, or if you up your Electronics to 15 you can get Power Management out of the way now. It isn't going to help you for the time being, but you will want it eventually, and it's not a bad idea to get it before the feats you'll want to get as soon as possible start popping up.
>>
>>165748123
Aaand a final thing, since I forgot to talk about the Persuasion soft cap. Unfortunately I don't remember the highest Persuasion check in the game, but from what I recall it was under 130. Will is your primary stat, you are going to hit that very fast. Keep in mind that you will get an additional stat point every 4 levels, and you will most likely put that in Will. At least that's what most psi players do. So if you keep maxing your Will, around ~65 points in Persuasion will take care of everything.

Thanks anon I really appreciate it, here's my 99% final build, only thing I'm really hesitating on now is Paranoia

Dex 7, Per 7, Will 10, Int 7

15 Hacking/Lockpicking/Electronics/Thought Control/Psychokinesis/Metathermics
10 Mechanics/Tailoring/Persuasion

Feats: Power Management, Paranoia
>>
>>165751165
Styg, you magnificent bastard. Never change, never give up your vision.
>>
>>165751229
That +5 Initiative of Paranoia is not something to laugh at, especially if you can't rely on Stealth to get you the first turn. And it also decreases the chance to get critically hit by 3% which if nothing else is good to push it back to 0% if you are using tabi boots, without using Groin Guard. That 20% Detection is also going to be a blessing against stealthed enemies.

Paranoia has become a fantastic feat since it got buffed.

Oh I will play it eventually but it is not that high on my priority list right now. I also think I should play fallout1+2 before.

Ah well. In that case maybe some other time.

You don't really have to play FO1-2 before this, it might even be a bad idea if it only makes you want to play another Fallout, which Underrail isn't. But waiting is not a terrible idea anyway, at least you'll get the chance to do your first playthrough with the expansion.

I don't agree with this at all. All Deep Caverns was for me was more tedium than usual. It wasn't an interesting challenge, just frustration, and I don't believe that the endgame was a standout game experience.

(sorry about the watermark )
>>
>>165756838
And I disagree with you. Deep Caverns is complex enough that it can give you a lot of challenge, or none at all.

If you have no choice but fight IRIS, it can be a challenging fight, and fairly unique. The only other time you had to go up against anything of this magnitude was RAF 013 fight.

If you fucked up with the Faceless, proceeding through the zones held by them is a challenge. And it isn't all that hard to fuck up with them, I have read so many people complaining about getting attacked because they joined the Tchortists it's not even funny. Taking on that outpost in itself is a good combat challenge.

Fighting Deep Worms might not be challenging by itself, but not wasting resources while doing so is. Resource management is a huge part of Deep Cavern's challenge, and proceeding through the Labyrinth without stealth while you are trying your best to save on ammo IS challenging.

The Tchort fight was made so that while you can negate some or even most of the Tentacles' damage, you can't negate all of them. Maybe you have good Evasion, that Electrokinesis and Neural Overload is still going to hit you. You might have good shield, but that Cryo and Acid will likely still go through, and so on. The regeneration is just to ensure most builds won't finish that fight in 1-2 turns, the challenge is finishing off the eye while withstanding the damage done by the Tentacles, or if you can't, look for a way to get rid of them.

As far as video game puzzles go, the mutagen puzzle is challenging.

The entire section offers you many ways to skip some of the challenge, it has you deal with the "consequence" part of the longest running choice and consequence of the game, it rewards you for previous actions like reading the Original Report by giving you access to a proper merchant, it rewards you for exploring the place and figuring out ways to cover for your weaknesses with the insane amount of equipment and resources you can find. It's a good experience.

>>
>>165779957
What >>165780459 said, but keep in mind that if you want to continue with this character when the expansion comes out, that additional 5 level will work differently. You won't be able to raise your skills or attributes, only get feats. So the cap is still pretty much 25, with some more options to tweak your build with feats.
>>
>>165780809
I really hate shit like that, where you basically don't know how to build your character for end game content until you get there. That's not good design, I don't want to replay this long ass fucking game, I can barely handle the amount of time it asks of me already.
>>
>>165782323

>>
>>165782323
Then don't replay it? I don't understand the issue. If the expansion genuinely allowed for further level ups, then you'd have a point. But the way it is, not much will change regarding your build. You'll pretty much continue playing the same build you already have.
>>
>>165782461
kek, all I can say is good luck with that.
>>
>>165779531
And you would know how?
>>
>>165782323
Uh what do you even mean? You don't need to replay it, you don't need to plan all the way to endgame right when you start.

Characters tend to be pretty solid by the time they're around level 12-14 and it's not one of those autistic difficulty fetish games. You don't need a perfect character to get through.

You don't get it, this is serious. We must secure Styg, at all costs. The future of RPGs is at stake.

First, we will have to locate him. That can't be too hard, Serbia is not that big. We'll move in and ask around, someone is bound to know him.

When we find him, we'll have to drug him somehow. It is possible that he would not cooperate with us on this, so it'll be for the best. But someone should subtly ask him about any drug allergies first. It would be a shame if he died on us because of an oversight.

Extracting him from the country might be difficult, the border control is unfortunately not complete shit. They might actually notice us trying to smuggle an unconscious guy out. I think it would be best if we masqueraded as Syrian refugees going to Germany. Some brown paint and towels should do the trick.

After that we'll improvise.

8str 7con 10wil 8int right now

I'm not sure about what I'm doing at all, my only weapon skill is melee and I got all 3 psionics up to 45

I also trained all the crafts except chemistry

I generally just face-tank all the damage and survive with incapacitating psi and doing a fuckton of damage with the sledgehammer

I think I wish I had just picked one of the psionics to use or something since my feats might get spread too thin now

like is what I want to do picking Skinner and making combat gloves? will that be the weapon I'm using at the end or will it be a sledge? do I need weaponsmith then? I just don't know.

I'm leaning towards skinner, psychostatic, crit power and heavyweight though

but why isn't there any feats to make better metal armor? what are suits like? is that another armor category?

at level 11 I guess I get 7 more feats? is that correct?

You mean would it increase your effective skill with INT skills? Sure, it would. But going that high with INT is not really necessary unless you want to raise a whole load of INT skills fast.

Dumping into CON is not a bad idea, if you can still get it up to 10 and unlock Thick Skull. If you are Psychosis, Survival Instinct is really good. Otherwise I'm not sure if it's worth it just with your slow moving sledge.

>Dumping into CON is not a bad idea, if you can still get it up to 10 and unlock Thick Skull. If you are Psychosis, Survival Instinct is really good. Otherwise I'm not sure if it's worth it just with your slow moving sledge.
I was definitely going to get Crit Power and Heavyweight no matter what, same with Psychosis and Neural Overcock.

I think at the end my stats will be 10 str, 9 con, 10 will, 8 int, so survival instinct will be the last feat I get and I won't be able to get thick skull.

It shouldn't matter too much how heavy the sledge is, because even though it won't get as many crits it should crit harder when it does.

I think I feel resolved somehow and will get weaponsmith and just go for max damage hammertime crits.
>>
>>165835486
>How good a feat is survival instinct?
It's a weird feat; spec everything into hit points to become a glass cannon.

I wouldn't recommend it on hard, maybe not even on normal unless you're really going full CON. But on easy.... it's absolutely glorious. You can easily stay under 30% HP all the time and just brutalize everything.

Difficulty changes you HP.

3x on easy
1.5x on normal
1x on hard

http://andymente.moo.jp/html/free12.htm
>>
>>165883424
No, that's entirely different thing and not a problem. Set your level in the calculator and in-game to the same and the numbers should match. That's just how synergies work. (However I did just notice a minor bug where display doesn't update for those wonky synergy cases when you increase your level, only when you change the skills/stats.)

Anyways, the guy just accidentally found a case where Underrail does a rounding error that I can't easily emulate.

It's slightly technical. For example if Underrail calculates 100*0.9 it will be like this:
>Mantissa: 23 bits, exponent: 8 bits, Clamp to infinity: false:
>multiply(100, 0.9) = 89.99999237060547
the Styg does his thing and directly casts the result into int -> it's truncated into 89. Most of these cases are not a problem, but once in a while there's a discrepancy because my calculator runs on javascript, which only has 64-bit floats (52 mantissa bits, 11 exponent bits)

tl;dr: my calculator is too precise to replicate underrail's bugs and i hate to "fix" that

Well yeah the ammo icons are gaudy as fuck and that screenshot has good examples of too cartoony style at the desk, laptop and many other objects.

However I think the item icons are good but too detailed. The way many items like guns are composited from icon parts will be hard to do in that style.

Those tilesets are good too. Would be cool if stygsoft got a permission to use his assets, there's good shit in there.

>>165895917
Use the assets, just do it with moderation. There comes a point where art quality is no longer the issue, but becomes good enough where style begins to matter. And style, not simply graphics, is something that can turn me off of games.

Well, this is fucking selfish of me to say this, and getting butthurt about graphics is among the most pathetic shit imaginable. And it doesn't even matter if I personally hate it. Only in that I'd probably have to forget about this game and move on before I end up walking the path of Elhazzered. Which is a fate that terrifies me more than anything.
>>
>>165895009
it's probably the color palette and verisimilitude

the newer shadowruns basically don't look like shadowrun because they're too clean and stylish and neon, instead of blood and dirt and garbage and oil and steel. it's not shadowrun, it's cyberfun, and fuck that really. where's the effervescent hostility?

the tidiness makes it look too bureaucratic and sterile, in a way that breaks verisimilitude, because who could manage to live like that in such circumstances really. it's not even a show of opulence because it's not like it's all the way, it's like stepping into a surreal pocket of non-reality where you don't feel like it's part of the world you were in before.

it's like the difference between a real thing and a painted plastic imitation, only one of them looks like an object created to purpose
>>

How long have you been underrailing? There has been considerable art evolution over the years. But don't worry - I don't think much if any of this guy's stuff is usable as is, well maybe some floor tiles. It's generally too different in style.

But the guy has shown to be familiar with XNA, interested in working on the game and has artistic skills. He could probably contribute something to the base game under Mac's art direction. If not, at least he's making a cool mod in his own style.

That's a lot more philosophical than I would have put it, but yes, that's the crux of the matter. This style is too plastic, by being more detailed leaves less to the imagination, and paradoxically ends up looking cheaper than a bunch of sprites drawn in MSPaint.

Fuck, I really hate these Shadowrun games. Of course it doesn't help that they really are mobile games with UI created for touchscreens. Which is a shame, since it's a pretty cook setting.

>>165897684
Long enough that I know of every phase the art went through. It never bothered me, it never even looked bad to me. You know, aside from those sprite placeholders. But those were never meant to be anything but placeholders.

Nah, this is a case of this guy's style rubbing me the wrong way. That's all. I would never want Styg to pass on potential cheap (or even free) workforce. But fuck me, it's ugly.

you know, as shitty as the first two fallout games are in some ways, you have to give them props for being solid aesthetic experiences with dirt and grime and grit and apocalypse dark ages the entire way through

they even give you the option of whether you want anything excessively silly to happen or not
>>
>>165898576
The original Fallouts had amazing art direction. I've yet to see another game deliver better post-apocalyptic aesthetics.
>>
>>165898576
Yeah, absolutely. Although even after so many years it's still clear at first glance that the Fallouts had some decent budget and team behind them Their art is among the best as far as isometric rpgs go. Good concept, good art direction, good execution. And dem animations, that's not something you get to see often.

>>165920845
Yeah, but I also don't think Styg likes modding very much. They say making modding tools would take too much time and resources, which is completely understandable. But at the same time, just look at the game. This is a game that actively tries to stop you from changing it, and tries its best to stop you from even figuring out how it works.

Head over to Foundry on the train, the woman in the very first screen will sell them to you. You can also get a free jackhammer by going into the mines, but you need permission from the mayor, which you can get by getting rid of a raider boss or finding out the cause of the recent string of deaths in the city, ir by passing a persuasion check.
>>
>>165951861
Several places, but if you want to find one quick and for free, go to the Foundry mines and pick one up from the floor.
>>
>>165952381
Or by simply using the back entrance to the mine.
>>
>>165952579

The mine has a back entrance? I thought the only way though was sneaking though those guards?

Also, do you know how to find the secret tunnel in the foundry prison? I read there is an oddity there, but I have been unable to find where the tunnel is. I have 10 perception, and tried looking around in the prison cells, but no success.
>>
>>165952735
>I have 10 perception
Correction: your character has. YOU don't have enough perception.

There's a hidden escape tunnel behind a poster in one of the cells.
>>
>>165952914

Oh, I have to click on it? I thought I would just hear a big "WOOOSH" sound and get notified about it when I got close enough like with the other perception check doors.
>>
>>165952381
>>165952579
Actually, you can just simply walk into the mine. No one's going to stop you. And there's a Jackhammer right there in the second room.
>>
>>165953041
There's lots of hidden stuff that's up to the player to notice too.
>>
>>165953041
The WHOOSH happens only if it's a perception attribute check, so the thing doesn't exist until you find it. The secret tunnel is just something you have to notice, you can interact with it any time.
